Jimmy Garoppolo will fight Trey Lance for the starting quarterback job of the San Francisco 49ers during training camp in about two months.
It was less than a month since San Francisco picked Lance of the state of North Dakota with the third election in the 2021 NFL Draft, shortly after he made a blockbuster deal with the Miami Dolphins. At this point, the evidence seemed to suggest that the 49ers were leaving Garoppolo in a deal.
After things cooled down a bit on that front, Garoppolo took part in volunteer team activities with Lance in Santa Clara starting Tuesday. The Super Bowl quarterback spoke of his thought process immediately after the above trade, clearly showing that he was considering requesting a trade.
“When it first happened, there were a million emotions going on in your head and you were thinking of all sorts of scenarios and things like that. But at the end of the day I want to play soccer. I want to go out there and win games. That’s what I do. And so it wasn’t too crazy, “Garoppolo told reporters.” It took a while to process everything. But when I did it once it was just, “Go out and ball.” You have to go out there and attack it. The NFL is crazy business. Things happen, but you have to attack them day in and day out and make the most of them. “
It makes sense that Garoppolo was surprised by the San Francisco 49ers when they first acted through the third election and then picked Lance. The 29-year-old quarterback was extremely successful on the field.
He has a 22-8 record as a starter for the 49ers since he was taken over by the New England Patriots in mid-2017. Unfortunately, Garoppolo also missed 23 out of 48 possible games in three full seasons with San Francisco. That led head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch to take a chance on Lance.

If Garoppolo doesn’t get back to 2019 shape and San Francisco leads to an intense playoff run in the coming season, he’s likely to be calling another NFL city at home in 2022. around with the 49ers.
“When you hear this criticism and hear these little things out there, it drives you to take your game to the next level. We’re all competitors out there. We all want to play the perfect game, and at the end of the day we try to do that. I’ll keep trying, “said Garoppolo.
From a micro standpoint, the veteran wants to prove to other teams that he’s a capable starter who can move forward. That, of course, depends on Garoppolo actually earning the San Francisco 49ers’ QB1 job through Trey Lance during training camp. At the moment this is not a guarantee.
There’s also a chance another quarterback could get injured during camp or preseason. Should Lance beat Garoppolo, it could accelerate the quarterback’s departure from Northern California.
For now, after the initial shock, Garoppolo urges to realize that the San Francisco 49ers are preparing for a future without him.
