Reopening standing: San Francisco eyes yellow tier

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – San Francisco is expected to move to the yellow tier reopening status next week based on its current case rates.

This means an increased capacity of up to 50% for places like gyms, cinemas and entertainment centers. The main changes affect bars and live performances.

This potential tier shift comes after San Francisco missed the mark a few weeks ago, but now with updated metrics for the state’s reopening tiers.

San Francisco is now qualified to move forward as long as the case rates stay the same.

San Francisco is expected to move to yellow tier status next week, meaning that bars that serve no food will be allowed to open 25% indoor capacity for the first time since the pandemic began, according to state guidelines.

“With the food component gone, I breathe that many, many bar owners breathe a sigh of relief because they no longer have to eat,” said Ben Bleiman.

Ben Bleiman, who owns several bars in San Francisco, including Tonic, Soda Popinski’s, and Teeth, says the yellow step change will help many bars in town get back on their feet.

“Bar owner, we don’t have servers. We had to struggle to get all of the logistics and equipment for serving food and some places did it but others were just a real problem and cost a lot of money to work, a lot of money to equipment and then was the customer experience difficult So it’s a big deal that we’re doing what we do again, which is selling drinks, ”said Bleiman.

The yellow tier status would also allow live venues to increase their capacity.

However, most of the venues in the city say it’s still not enough to make a profit.

“Neither of them are really open and the limited capacity means you are spending more money on staff than you could possibly make on the door and bar,” said Devon Dossett.

Devon Dossett, manager of the DNA Lounge, says like many other live music venues in town.

They don’t plan on opening until after June 15th, the target date when California will aim to fully reopen.

The tier change comes after the state updates its yellow tier reopening metrics to an adjusted rate of two COVID cases per 100,000 residents, compared to the previous “yellow” tier threshold of 1 case per 100,000 residents.

“It makes sense. We are the community with the highest first-dose vaccination rate. We are 70% first-dose vaccination in the city of San Francisco. No other place has managed to get this high. The current national dose in the United States is 42.7% of the first dose which is so high that not only will it reduce transmission, but it will also make your cases very low. That makes your hospital stays very low, ”said Dr. Monica Gandhi.

The tier change would also come with good timing, as San Francisco announced plans for an outdoor graduation ceremony on Tuesday.

While these activities would be allowed under state guidelines, it is ultimately up to San Francisco to decide whether some or all are allowed.

KRON4 reached out to the health officer’s office on Tuesday, and while they haven’t been able to confirm what’s allowed or not, they said they are currently working on yellow plans.
