They call it the “hill bomb” and it happens every year, but the San Francisco Police have tried to prevent it.

They set up barricades on several blocks of Dolores Street, but the skaters simply went down another street.

“I guess the police aren't as interested in this one as they were in Dolores,” said Amire Lofton, who attended. “Four skaters, they all said Church Street and they all just came here.”

RELATED: 'You could get arrested': SFPD warns skaters planning to attend Dolores Park Hill bomb blast

The police were on the mountain but did not intervene. They even blocked the road for the skaters.

Last year, San Francisco police attempted to prevent the Hill Bomb and a confrontation broke out between them and the skaters. Over 100 people were arrested for throwing objects at police and damaging a MUNI train.

Police Chief Bill Scott said this week he would not tolerate violence.

Many skaters feel the city should have worked with them to keep the event going while ensuring safety.

“The city was not warned about this event without adequate warning,” said Aaron Breetwor, a skateboard activist from San Francisco. “I was in contact with them a year ago trying to get them to make the event safer, even though there was no official organizer, and they had nothing planned other than this.”

RELATED TOPICS: What will happen at this year's Dolores Park Hill bombing? SFPD advises not to go

Breetwor claims skateboards are listed as a non-motorized, user-powered vehicle in the city's traffic code. He plans to continue talking with the city.

However, residents of the park were happy to see the police.

“It's about public safety. It's not about the kids not having fun,” said Chuck Louden, who lives near the park. “I'm glad to see them here today. We can work together to find a place that works for everyone, but this is about safety.”

We have reached out to the San Francisco Police Department to ask why they did not intervene in the bombing on the hill and are now waiting for a response.

MORGAN HILL (CBS SF) — A man was arrested Wednesday evening in connection with the kidnapping and assault of a handyman in unincorporated Santa Clara County from more than two weeks ago, a Santa Clara County sheriff’s sergeant said.

Richard Rodriguez Jr., 49, whose last known address was in Alameda, turned himself in to Alameda police around 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sgt. Jose Cardoza said.

Alameda police will bring Rodriguez to the Santa Clara County sheriff’s office within the next week, Cardoza said.

Rodriguez had an outstanding warrant on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment for his suspected involvement in a Dec. 3 incident where a handyman was forced to do repair work to homes against his will, Cardoza said.

Cardoza said Rodriguez aided two Morgan Hill residents, Jason DeJesus, 36, and Chanelle Troedson, 33, in forcing the 50-year-old repair man to work on the Morgan Hill suspects’ home in the 200 block of Caldwell Way.

On Dec. 3, San Jose police received a report of a kidnapping and assault at about 7 p.m. from the victim, who had managed to escape his captors at a San Jose gas station.

Police handed the investigation over to the sheriff’s office since the kidnapping occurred outside police jurisdiction, Cardoza said.

The victim told deputies he had initially performed handyman services for a relative of one of the suspects about two months ago, but was not paid in full for his work, resulting in a dispute for services rendered, Cardoza said.

The victim said the suspects lured him to their residence to do repair work just before 11 a.m., the sergeant said.

Upon arrival at the residence, the victim was assaulted, held against his will and threatened with his life for several hours, Cardoza said.

The victim was still at the residence on Caldwell Way at 5:30 p.m. when the suspects forced the victim into a truck.

The victim was told he would be made to finish the repair work that he began two months ago at the suspect’s relative’s house in Santa Clara.

On the way to the home, the suspects stopped at the Chevron gas station at the intersection of Santa Teresa Boulevard and Cottle Road in San Jose to purchase gas.

When the suspects exited the vehicle to purchase gas and food, the victim escaped on foot, disregarding a warning by the suspects to stay put, Cardoza said.

The victim ran to a nearby residence to report the incident, he said.

San Jose police responded to the area, located the DeJesus and Troedson near the gas station and arrested them on suspicion of false imprisonment, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and conspiracy.

MORGAN HILL (CBS 5) — Two people who live in a large Morgan Hill home have been arrested on suspicion of holding a handyman hostage and forcing him to do home repairs.

Investigators said the 50-year-old victim was lured to a home on 200 block of Caldwell Court Monday morning. The sprawling 4,600 square foot home has five bedrooms and is equipped with a pool, a beach volleyball court, and a tennis court.

“He was assaulted, he was threatened with his life, and he was forced to do some work at the house,” Sgt. Jose Cardoza of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office told CBS 5.

Detectives said 36-year-old Jason DeJesus and 33-year-old Chanelle Troedson beat the handyman, threatened to kill him and forced him to fix several items in the house over a six-hour span. The repairs included a dishwasher and a broken door.

“The victim was pretty terrified. He was pretty shaken up and scared by this whole incident,” Cardoza said. “What he did tell investigators is that he was just trying to do what he was being told, wait for the opportunity to escape.”

On Monday night, authorities said the suspects forced the handyman into his truck. With one of the suspects driving, the victim was told they were traveling to a suspect’s relative’s house in Santa Clara to perform additional repairs.

They pulled over at a gas station on Santa Teresa Blvd. and Cottle Road in South San Jose. The handyman escaped when the suspects left to pay for gas and snacks. DeJesus and Troedson were arrested by police shortly after.

Other people who lived in the home declined to be interviewed by CBS 5.

Investigators said the handyman performed work for De Jesus’ mother two months ago.

“The work wasn’t performed to the likes of the suspect’s relative at the time, and on top of that there was dispute over services rendered, the victim wasn’t paid entirely. That kind of boiled over into what occurred last night,” Cardoza said.

DeJesus and Troedson face several felony charges including false imprisonment, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, and conspiracy.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call Sgt. Julian Quinonez or Detective Sgt. Dave Roberts at the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office at (408) 808-4500. Tips can also be left anonymously at (408) 808-4431.

This week we’re looking at this home in Tobin Hill that has been renovated, receiving refreshed interiors and fixtures.

More people have been looking to move to San Antonio in 2023. (Especially from Austin!) But San Antonio rents aren’t dropping. From finding your perfect new home to negotiating rent prices, searching for an apartment in San Antonio can be quite the experience. Taking inspiration from our sister publication SFGate in San Francisco, MySA is looking at local properties showcasing the best, worst, and everything in between here in the Alamo City. Let’s guess the rent.

The infinity pool apartment at La Cantera was up there in rental price, nearing a $2,000 price tag for a two-bedroom. Perhaps you were also paying for the area the apartment was located. This week we are heading back toward central San Antonio in a neighborhood just north of downtown. This three-bedroom home at 517 E. Mistletoe, San Antonio, TX 78212 in Tobin Hill has received some recent upgrades, according to the listing.

The home is less than a minute from the St. Mary’s Strip, which is a food destination by day and popular nightlife spot when the sun goes down. There is, however, the crowd to contend with on the weekend. Still, Tobin Hill is a popular area and that could affect the rental price along with those renovations.

North Dakota governor Doug Burgum is used to being counted out — and he brought that underdog energy to a meet and greet to Washington, DC, just in time to celebrate his surprising qualification for the Presidential Republican primary debate stage.

At the swanky Capitol Hill Club he made his case. He was surrounded by his state’s congressional delegation along with Senator Susan Collins, former senator Norm Coleman and a room of curious onlookers, many of whom told Cockburn they first learned of his campaign when he launched a clever scheme to mail out $20 gift cards in exchange for a $1 donation—a way to reach the 40,000 donor threshold to make the stage.

Sign up for Cockburn’s gossip column

Mischief, mayhem and Washington gossip from The Spectator’s intrepid beat reporter.

“You shouldn’t be allowed to be president of the United States if you haven’t actually worked a business,” said software billionaire Burgum. “I worked as a chimney sweep to pay my way through college.”

Unsurprisingly, much of his pitch revolves around energy independence, given the importance the industry has to his state. “This isn’t rocket science, I want some common sense,” he said. “We can’t even provide low-cost, clean, reliable energy to our own country,” he lamented. He also addressed another issue he focuses on in Bismarck: “indiscriminate” addiction.

Fentanyl and alcohol don’t ask if victims are Republicans or Democrats, he noted. His wife, First Lady Kathryn Burgum, has frequently spoken about her triumph over addiction, and said her husband’s campaign is a great vehicle to take that message nationwide.

This “local but big” approach is what he’s trying to do in his latest mission. Politics is a team sport, he said, lavishing praise on Senators Kevin Cramer and John Hoeven and Congressman Kelly Armstrong for endorsing him (Burgum noted he is the only Republican with his entire delegation’s endorsements) and his team of “Sodbusters,” for helping him clear the threshold of 40,000 donors to debate.

The crowd at the Capitol Hill Club (The Spectator)

Armstrong is “all-in on Governor Burgum and the best first lady in the country,” he said. “The buzz is real,” he assured everyone. While most people Cockburn spoke with wouldn’t have bet their farms on Burgum, Armstrong has seen Burgum go from an anonymous businessman to governor.

That ascent to the governor’s mansion was no sure thing — and his wife drew parallels between that and his current quest for the White House.

Burgum’s assessment of that race was “there’s only five months until the primary, our opponent has 100 percent name recognition, his family has been in politics practically since statehood, and he’s been the sitting attorney general for fifteen years, and there’s one more thing; he’s ahead by sixty points in the polls.” Five months later, Burgum won the primary by double digits.

In a previous life, Armstrong was the head of North Dakota’s Republican Party, and he’d watched Burgum “turn an entire room full of people into Doug supporters inside of twenty-five minutes.” Burgum’s tenure as governor shows people that “you don’t have to be crazy to be conservative,” Armstrong said. Now, the governor needs to do that on a nationwide scale.

While Burgum is no stranger to winning in upsets, there’s only one way he comes to DC in elected office, and that’s to move into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He told the audience he will “never run for Senate because I’m an operating guy.”

Before Burgum shifted to questions, Cramer praised his remarks — “wouldn’t he be good on the debate stage?” he asked. Giving out $20 Biden Relief Cards is how Burgum made the cut for Milwaukee, and now his primary rivals like Miami mayor Francis Suarez are, in essence, copying his tactics. The governor is OK with that. “The greatest form of flattery is imitation,” he told Cockburn after his photo line.

When pressed about how he rocks the best hair in the presidential field, Burgum deflected, instead choosing to praise the hairdos of the Ruthless podcast hosts that he spoke with earlier that day (“the group I was with today, on Ruthless, that whole group has got good hair”), and actually handed out oppo on himself — saying that his earlier hairdos are worth further scrutiny.

“I think if you really want to do an exposé on this, you’ve just got to go back about twenty-five years and then you’ll see real flow.” Challenge accepted:

While Burgum made the debate stage in no small part due to his pledge to hand out $1 million, Cockburn couldn’t help but note that this generosity did not extend to the DC donor class — disappointingly, the food was free but the booze was a cash bar.

This week we’re looking at this very blue home turned duplex that has a two-bedroom apartment near Beacon Hill.

Craigslist

More people have been looking to move to San Antonio in 2023. (Especially from Austin!) But San Antonio rents aren’t dropping. From finding your perfect new home to negotiating rent prices, searching for an apartment in San Antonio can be quite the experience. Taking inspiration from our sister publication SFGate in San Francisco, MySA is looking at local properties showcasing the best, worst, and everything in between here in the Alamo City. Let’s guess the rent.

It seems like most people in San Antonio know what last week’s “detached condo” was, or at least they were curious enough to find out what that is. This week we’re going to look at a two-bedroom apartment inside this deep blue home at 1030 W. Russell Place, San Antonio, TX 78212, which is near Beacon Hill.

This 1,100-square-foot unit is upstairs, according to the listing. It’s in a prime location being just north of downtown San Antonio with access to nearly every major San Antonio highway nearby. But what does this location mean for the rent?
