City approves $400,000 for college HVAC design plan

Jan. 21 — EAST WINDSOR — City residents approved the allocation of $400,000 for planning plans for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at three city schools during Tuesday’s special assembly.

This money would come from the city’s general budget balance and would be used to qualify for the second round of state funding to install the systems, if the city’s application is accepted.

Gov. Ned Lamont on Sept. 14 announced a $150 million grant program to improve air filtration systems in Connecticut public schools. However, the application, which required design plans, had to be submitted by December 1.

First Selectman Jason Bowsza said engineering plans for HVAC systems at three schools could take six to eight months to complete.

Due to the short notice, Bowsza said East Windsor and many other cities missed the chance to apply for the first round.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Deputy Selectwoman Marie DeSousa encouraged everyone to vote yes and said it’s important to be ready when grant money becomes available again.

The $400,000 would be used for design plans at East Windsor High School, East Windsor Middle School and Broad Brook Elementary School, with each plan costing between $120,000 and $130,000.

The $400,000 came from the school board’s budget surplus for the 2021-22 fiscal year.
