What consultants stated about San Francisco 49ers taking Jake Moody in third spherical

In perhaps the most shocking selection of Day 2 of the draft, the San Francisco 49ers went for a kicker with the 99th draft pick.

Jake Moody was undoubtedly the best kicker in the draft. He won the Lou Groza Award in 2021 after hitting 92% of his field goals. Moody had 62-to-62 extra points last season and had his foot involved in game-winning kicks during his tenure at Michigan.

The shocking thing about the pick is that Moody is the first kicker hit in the first three rounds of the draft since 2016. The 49ers have had their share of pedaling problems and the hope is that Moody will fix them for years to come.

Of course, design experts had their say on the matter, and here’s what was said.

CBS sports

CBS Sports’ Chris Trappaso will not draw a kicker in the third round. He gave it the grade C-minus.

He’s very accurate and has done a lot of big kicks in his career, but he doesn’t have a huge leg. Kicker in round 3?

Sporting News

Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer gave the choice a B.

The 49ers wanted to replace Robbie Gould with a younger, larger leg, and he should maintain the accuracy and reliability while giving them much-needed longer reach.

Pro Soccer Network

Needless to say, Sporting News’ Ryan Gosling wasn’t a fan of choice, he gave the 49ers a D-Plus.

There was certainly a possibility that Jake Moody didn’t make it through Round 4, but it’s a move best left to someone else.

NFL.com

NFL.com’s Chad Reuter gave the 49ers a B-minus for their pick.

Moody was my favorite kicker in the draft for his consistency and leg strength, but it’s hard to give high marks for a third-round pick for a specialist.

For the win

For The Win wasn’t impressed. The 49ers got a D.

Ah. It’s a foosball. In the third round. Sure he’s a good kicker and the Niners need a replacement for Robbie Gould, but… THAT was their first pick of 2023?

PFF

PFF gave the election a below-average mark.

Moody has posted PFF field goal grades of 90.2 and 91.7 for the last two seasons, respectively, so the idea of him being the first kicker drafted makes sense. But the third round is rich for any kicker in this class.

The story goes on

sports illustrated

Sports Illustrated gave the selection a C-minus.

Moody needs to become an All-Pro or that’s very early for a kicker. The Niners get the best kicker in the draft and someone who kicked through the elements in Ann Arbor and prepared him for San Francisco’s unpredictable weather.
