It’s unclear whether or not the 49ers are looking to move assets this season, but these three players could end up in the trading bloc anyway.
The San Francisco 49ers may not be able to part with too many excess players who will no longer fit into the long-term scheme of things in 2021 and beyond. If anything, the entire loss of injuries over the past year is proof that the quality of stockpiling is almost as necessary as a squad of top performing starters.
Even so, General Manager John Lynch has never been shy about acting openly in the market, whether it be moving up or down in the NFL draft, acquiring players from other teams, or even firing Niners players in package deals elsewhere.
Notably, San Francisco has seven draft picks in 2022, but none in Round 1, having climbed to 3rd place overall in this year’s draft. So there might be plenty of reasons to stock up on some mid- or late-round picks next year to get at least some new talent on board.
With so many current players on the 49ers offseason list back on one-year contracts, it could make sense to protect yourself against an additional churn of free agents by increasing the draft capital in 2022.
So don’t be surprised if Lynch and the Niners put some players in the trading bloc between now and the NFL trading deadline, which is slated to be November 2nd this year.
It is unlikely that these three players will be postponed anytime soon. But since the overall context of San Francisco is likely to change in the coming months, don’t be surprised if Lynch makes a couple of calls to see if these three end up piquing interest in the open market.
