San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been a polarizing topic in the football world lately.

A series of events involving Aiyuk recently have highlighted his frustration with the organization. However, the offseason drama has apparently cleared up after it was reported that Aiyuk and team officials had a “good meeting” and that the star pass catcher would not demand a transfer. Here's what I can tell you: Aiyuk and the 49ers leadership met on Monday at Aiyuk's request. It was a good meeting. From what I've heard, both sides said the things that needed to be said and they're going to continue to work on them. It's important to note that there was never a trade request from Brandon Aiyuk. That hasn't changed. The 49ers' stance hasn't changed either, despite receiving trade talks involving Aiyuk since draft week.

Although Pelissero has openly expressed his frustration with the organization, he confirms that Aiyuk never requested a trade from the 49ers. While the team received calls regarding potential transfer packages, the 49ers have not changed their stance on bringing the star wideout back to the Bay Area in 2024.

They are moving forward and want Aiyuk to be part of the team in 2024, so I expect everyone involved will enjoy the Fourth of July holiday and regroup later. They still have several weeks to see if they can work out a deal that keeps Brandon Aiyuk in San Francisco long-term.

The organization still has time to sign Aiyuk to a new contract before the 2024 season, keeping him in scarlet and gold for the foreseeable future.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan runs an offense that is inherently based on running the football, so we've seen him take star running back Christian McCaffrey's game to a whole new level.

The offense is loaded with star offensive players all over the field, and Shanahan does his best to distribute the ball to all of his playmakers. The offense doesn't necessarily need Aiyuk to catch 100 or more passes per season, so he doesn't get as many touches as players like other wide receivers like Ceedee Lamb or Amon Ra St. Brown.

It's safe to assume that Aiyuk would want a contract similar to St. Brown's recent extension, as the two have similar talent. St. Brown's contract extension with the Detroit Lions is a four-year, $120 million deal that includes $77 million in guaranteed salary.

This is a situation to keep an eye on going forward. Aiyuk's new contract could potentially boost the wide receiver market even more than it already is. Aiyuk and the 49ers are looking to defend their title as NFC champions and finally bring home the Lombardi Trophy in 2024.

California water regulators have teed up what promises to be one of the state’s biggest debates on water in years, releasing a long-anticipated proposal Thursday to revive dozens of rivers, creeks and wetlands by reining in the draws of cities and farms.

The goal is nothing short of ensuring that sufficient water is flowing from the high Sierra to San Francisco Bay, to nourish vast and diverse landscapes, support fish and wildlife and halt the decline of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, the largest estuary on the West Coast and the hub of the state’s water supply.

The nearly 6,000-page document, an update to what’s known as the Bay-Delta Plan, focuses on boosting water flows, and limiting pumping, in the Delta and in the Sacramento River basin. A previous update, in 2018, did the same for the San Joaquin River basin, to the south. Taken together, the two updates, once implemented, provide regulatory standards for the entire Sacramento-San Joaquin River watershed, from the Oregon border to Fresno.

“It is a consequential effort,” said Eric Oppenheimer, chief deputy director of the State Water Resources Control Board, in a briefing on his agency’s update to the Bay-Delta Plan. “It reflects years of scientific analysis that we’ve undertaken and years of public input.”

Regulation of flows in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River watershed has not been fully updated since 1995. Since then, waterways have been choked with pollutants, algal blooms have proliferated, salmon populations have collapsed and climate change has raised the specter of deeper droughts. Rivers and creeks sometimes run dry, or come close to it, because of the constant pumping.

The Delta, where much of the state’s river water flows before being exported to the Bay Area, southern California and the agricultural lands in between, has borne the brunt.

Getting more water back into the watershed to improve the situation, however, has been a sore point for the scores of municipal and agricultural water agencies that take water from the rivers, creeks and wetlands. A handful of agencies, including the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, have already sued the state over the 2018 update to the Bay-Delta Plan, saying they’d have to forfeit too much water. Similar wrangling could arise with the new update.

The update for the Sacramento River basin and the Delta offers several alternatives for moving forward. The state water board’s leadership is expected to settle on one option next year. But the main proposal calls for the Sacramento River and its many tributaries as well as the three rivers feeding the Delta from the east (the Mokelumne, Calaveras, and Consumnes) to maintain, on average, 55% of their natural flow, meaning 45% can be taken by water agencies.

Currently, these waterways, on average, run at about 45% of their natural flow, with 55% diverted, according to state data. The proposed change would represent a loss of about 2 million acre feet of water for the water agencies, the equivalent of about five San Francisco Hetch Hetchy Reservoirs.

How this loss would be split up among water agencies will be the subject of future discussion, though it’s likely to be dictated by the state’s water rights system, which prioritizes seniority.

In addition to flow requirements, the update to the Bay-Delta Plan contains a handful of other measures. These include restrictions on how much water can be pumped out of the Delta, flow requirements from the Delta to San Francisco Bay and requisite releases of cold water from reservoirs to accommodate salmon runs.

As an alternative to the water board’s regulation, several water agencies, along with the operators of the state and federal water projects, have proposed a plan of their own. Dubbed the “voluntary agreements,” the plan calls for allowing the agencies to take more water than what the board wants but with the tradeoff of restoring natural habitat for fish and wildlife.

Water agencies have said that, without their alternative, cuts to residential, agricultural and corporate water users may be inevitable.

The water board’s leadership has said it will consider the voluntary agreements.

Conversely, many environmental groups, fishermen and tribal leaders have called on the water board to go further to protect the Sacramento River basin and the Delta. Prior reports by the water board have shown that consistent benefits for fish and wildlife will only come if the rivers and creeks maintain at least 55% of their natural flow. The benefit is far greater if 75% of the flow is maintained, according to the reports.

Whatever pathway is ultimately selected, it may be years before it’s implemented.

The water board has been working on a revised Bay-Delta Plan since 2008, and even the update approved by the board’s leadership in 2018 is still not enforced. The court fight over the 2018 revisions continues, and the board’s leadership, rather than proceed with the new regulation, has agreed to also consider voluntary agreements proposed by the water agencies in the San Joaquin River basin.

Public comment on the Bay-Delta Plan update for the Sacramento River basin and the Delta is open through Dec. 15. The document also serves as the required environmental analysis for the regulation. The water board has scheduled several public hearings on the proposal in the interim.

The separate proposal by the state Department of Water Resources to build a tunnel beneath the Delta to expedite water exports is not mentioned in the summary of the Bay-Delta Plan update. The movement of water through the pipeline, though, would likely be subject to whatever regulation comes out of the plan.

“This is a major milestone, but there’s a lot of work ahead of us,” Oppenheimer said.

The anime feature “Poupelle of Chimney Town,” the first directorial film from Yusuke Hirota, takes place in a metropolis where the sky is always dark from smoke. The residents are policed by cloaked officials called inquisitors, who make it their business to suppress dissenters, particularly civilians who propose that there might be a world beyond the nearby ocean or the blotted-out firmament.

In this dystopia, animated in a way that suggests a steampunk Chutes and Ladders, Lubicchi (voiced by Antonio Raul Corbo), a lonely boy who works as a chimney sweep, makes his first friend: a garbage man — that is, a creature made out of trash — whom he names Poupelle (Tony Hale). (The name is similar to “poubelle,” which is French for trash can.) Poupelle’s origins are murky, but in a pre-title sequence, he appears to arrive from the stars, where Lubicchi’s father (Stephen Root), who disappeared, always urged his son to look.

Adapted by Akihiro Nishino from his picture book of the same name, the story evokes familiar touchstones: “The Wizard of Oz” (in Poupelle’s Scarecrow-like headwear and the climactic deployment of a hot-air balloon); “E.T.” (boy-alien friendship); and “WALL-E” (the landfill aesthetic). The allegory is semi-coherent but intriguing. Effectively, this movie asks what would happen if the existence of a self-devaluing currency caused radical libertarians to create Big Brother to protect people from a central bank.

Trying to get a read on the film — while admiring its palette and off-kilter character details (Lubicchi has an odd vampire overbite) — keeps “Poupelle” fun for a while. But the film ultimately shies away from its most disturbing ideas, falling back on a comforting sentimentality.

Es ist viel zu lange her, seit ich die Ewige Stadt das letzte Mal gesehen habe.

Vor nur einem Semester vor mehr Jahren, als ich zählen möchte, lebte ich in einem Studentenwohnheim auf einem Weinberg außerhalb von Rom, wo Sonnenblumen zum Gruß in den Himmel wuchsen und die Birnen, die von den Obstbäumen fielen, süßen Saft auf dich herabtropften Kinn und hinterlässt den klebrigen Rest purer, kindlicher Freude.

Ich studierte Englisch im Hauptfach, Nebenfach Philosophie und war fasziniert von allem, was antik war: klassische Mythologien mit all ihren schelmischen und lästigen Göttern; die Kunst, oft andächtig und oft auch recht frech; die jahrtausendealte Architektur, die sich das Recht verdient hatte, ein wenig nachzulassen, selbst wenn sie stolz, aber entspannter dastand, als sie vor über 2.000 Jahren erscheinen musste.

Wir folgten dem Weg der römischen Legionen entlang der Via Appia, verfolgten die Siege und Gefahren der Gladiatoren im Kolosseum, reckten unsere Hälse, um den Himmel in Michelangelos Sixtinischer Kapelle zu sehen, und bestaunten den feinen Regen, der durch das Okulus direkt auf den fiel Marmorboden von Agrippas exquisitem Pantheon.

Wir kauften Käse am Campo de’ Fiori, aßen (viel zu viel) Gelato, warfen unsere Münzen in den Trevi-Brunnen mit dem Wunsch, eines Tages zurückzukehren, und drängten uns mit unseren Rucksäcken durch die Menschenmassen am Bahnhof Termini. Wir lernten, unsere Pizzen zu vierteln und sie mit der Effizienz einer einzelnen Scheibe zu verschlingen, und unseren Espresso im Stehen an der Bar zu trinken. Wir riefen Basta! bei allzu fürsorglichen italienischen Männern.

Wir haben uns in Bars in Trastevere betrunken, so getan, als würden wir Grappa mögen, und auf die harte Tour gelernt haben, dass die Kastanien, die zur Weihnachtszeit von den Straßenhändlern geröstet werden, nicht nach diesem verführerischen Aroma schmecken. Wir standen auf dem Stumpf einer geriffelten Säule auf dem Forum Romanum und wurden von ihm heruntergeschleudert, während wir Zeilen aus Shakespeares Julius Cäsar rezitierten („Freunde, Römer, Landsleute…“). Wir kreischten vor gespieltem Entsetzen, als wir unsere Hände in den Mund der Wahrheit steckten. Wir hatten eine Audienz beim Papst.

Es ist über 20 Jahre her, seit ich von Rom in mein damaliges Zuhause in Texas zurückgekehrt bin und mir geschworen habe, nie wieder ein Stück amerikanische Pizza zu essen (ein Gelübde, das glücklicherweise gebrochen wurde, als ich später nach San Francisco gezogen bin), als ich mich letzten Herbst auf dem Weg zurück nach San Francisco befand Rom, als Erwachsener und mit meiner Familie im Schlepptau, und ich verspüre den Drang, es noch einmal zu sehen. Noch bevor ich in Fiumicino lande, spüre ich bereits die unvermeidliche Enttäuschung, dass man nicht ganz Rom in eine viertägige Reise packen kann. Ich könnte es nicht in ein ganzes Semester packen. Und so beschließe ich mit meinem besten italienischen Achselzucken, mit dem Strom zu schwimmen, alles zu entdecken, was mich entdeckt, und zu versuchen, wirklich zu tun, was die Römer tun: das il dolce far niente anzunehmen, die Süße des Nichtstuns.

Dies ist der Teil der Geschichte, in dem ich gestehe, dass ich beim Nichtstun schwer gescheitert bin. Begleitet von einer Familie, die noch nie in Rom war, setzte ich brav meine Reiseleitermütze auf, um noch einmal mehr als 20.000 Schritte pro Tag durch den Vatikan, das Pantheon, das Kolosseum und die Villa Borghese zu stapfen. Und um eine andere Wahrheit zu sagen, ich habe alles aufgegessen wie eine große, fette Schüssel Cacio e Pepe.

Ich genoss es, mein Gedächtnis auf die Leckerbissen zu testen, die ich vor Jahrzehnten gelernt hatte, und genoss es, Dinge zu lernen, die ich beim ersten Mal vergessen oder verpasst hatte. Ich versuche, das Wort „episch“ für Dinge zu reservieren, die wirklich sind. Rom verdient das Adjektiv und ehrlich gesagt auch das Substantiv.

So wie die Stadt auf Infrastrukturschichten aus unzähligen vergangenen Jahrhunderten aufgebaut ist, birgt sie Schichten von Wundern, die es zu entdecken gilt, egal wie oft Sie sie besuchen. Die sehenswerten Denkmäler hier sind buchstäblich endlos, ebenso wie die hochwertigen Ressourcen da draußen, die sie sehr detailliert auflisten.

Also für diejenigen unter Ihnen, die il dolce far niente festnageln möchten, werde ich nur ein paar absolute Muss für Ihre nächste Reise nach Rom teilen: wo Sie übernachten, eine herrliche Tour und wo Sie essen und trinken können – denn wirklich, das Nichtstun Teil wird am besten mit einem Teller Pasta und einem Glas italienischem Rotwein genossen. Finden Sie sich in den Vierteln Monti, Testaccio, Ostiense und Trastevere wieder … und verlaufen Sie sich unterwegs.

Unterkunft in Rom: Anantara Palazzo Naiadi

Es ist die vielfältige Geschichte und Kultur, die über so viele Jahrhunderte weitergegeben und erschüttert wurde, die Rom so besonders macht. Zu sehen, wie Gen Zers Skateboard fahren und bis spät in die Nacht unter dem Schein des Kolosseums herumhängen, das 80 n. Chr. Fertiggestellt wurde, macht mir Gänsehaut. Ich frage mich, welche Weisheit die römische Jugend in einem solchen Kontext nur durch Osmose aufsaugen könnte, da sie nicht von Flüstern, sondern von Rufen aus der Vergangenheit umgeben ist.

Der zentral an der Piazza della Repubblica gelegene Palazzo Naiadi ist selbst ein Mikrokosmos der tiefen Geschichte Roms, seiner Gegenwart und seiner Zukunft. Das Hotel ist ein Marmorpalast aus dem 19. Jahrhundert mit neoklassizistischen Säulengängen und einem schicken Jugendstilgebäude, das über den Ruinen der antiken Diokletianthermen (fertiggestellt 306 n. Chr.) liegt, von denen Teile durch dicke Glasböden auf der untersten Ebene zu sehen sind –inspirierte Umgestaltung mit freundlicher Genehmigung seines neuesten Verwalters, der Anantara-Luxushotelgruppe. Mit 238 sehr eleganten Zimmern und Suiten fühlt sich das Palazzo Naiadi eher Boutique an, als es tatsächlich ist. Und während bestimmte Annehmlichkeiten noch renoviert werden oder auf Renovierungsarbeiten warten, darunter der Pool auf dem Dach und das Gourmetrestaurant (das in diesem Frühjahr fertiggestellt werden soll), werden Sie sich in der eleganten Lounge auf Lobby-Ebene mit zeitgenössischer Schwarz-Weiß-Kunst und Samt wie zu Hause fühlen Möbel und polierte Messingakzente bilden einen stilvollen Sitzplatz für Aperitifs.

Im Geiste des Nichtstuns begann ich meinen Aufenthalt mit einer Behandlung, dem dekadenten Diokletian-Ritual mit alten und regionalen Zutaten, im Anantara Spa (sehr empfehlenswert für alle, die mit Jetlag zu kämpfen haben), und schlenderte dann über die Piazza nach Santa Maria degli Angeli und dei Martiri. Diese seltsam aussehende Basilika wurde nach Entwürfen von Michelangelo im 16. Jahrhundert in die Ruinen der Diokletiansthermen gemeißelt. Auf der Rückseite befindet sich ein Museum, das den Bädern gewidmet ist, mit einem schönen Gartenhof, in dem Sie ohne Museumseintritt mehrere antike Sarkophage und andere Relikte besichtigen können.

Dieser Ort, so haben wir aus Erfahrung gelernt, ist auch ein beliebter Treffpunkt für städtische Proteste. Bei unserem Besuch im vergangenen Herbst kam eine Versammlung zusammen, um sich gegen die neue Premierministerin, die konservative Giorgia Meloni, auszusprechen und uns einen Crashkurs in moderner italienischer Politik vor dem buchstäblichen Hintergrund der Antike anzubieten. Wir nahmen alles mit einem Glas Sekt von der schmalen Terrasse unserer Suite mit Blick auf die kreisförmige Piazza und den 1888 erbauten Najadenbrunnen auf.

Ja, der Name ist kitschig. Und ja, es stammt aus jener Szene in dem Julia-Roberts-Film, der das Konzept von il dolce far niente in das amerikanische Bewusstsein brachte. Und es lohnt sich zu 100 Prozent.

In dem Moment, als ich den speziell angefertigten Roller mit seinem lebhaften Beiwagen im Retro-Stil und einem hübschen Anstrich in immergrüner Farbe erblickte, wurde ich zu Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, mit großen Augen und hingerissen von der Neuheit. Einheimische und Touristen machten gleichermaßen Fotos von uns, als wir über das Kopfsteinpflaster der engen römischen Gassen schwirrten – von der Piazza della Repubblica zum Trevi-Brunnen, zu einem Café am Pantheon für Cappuccinos nach Trastevere für Austern auf dem Freiluftmarkt und für ein schnelles Winken zum Petersdom. Die Vespa war genau richtig, um die Ewige Stadt zu erkunden. Klein und wendig hielten wir mit ihrer Energie Schritt; wir waren eins mit ihrem zeitlosen Lärm.

Restaurants in Rom: Eine kurze, aber makellose Liste

Sich in die Süße des Nichtstuns hineinzulehnen bedeutet, in ein Straßencafé zu gehen und vielleicht ein bisschen zu lange bei einem Mittagessen zu verweilen. Die Concierges im Palazzo Naiadi waren sowohl entzückend freundlich als auch bereit, Lokale wie das Barzilai Bistrot aufzugeben, die nur Einheimischen vorbehalten sind. Im flippigen Viertel Monti wurde sein durchschnittliches traditionelles Essen dank einer ausgelassenen Unterhaltung mit seinen achtzigjährigen Besitzern und ihrem faulen Hund unvergesslich. Aber während ich das Mittagessen gerne dem Zufall überlasse, verlasse ich das Haus nie ohne eine Reservierung für das Abendessen. Vor meiner letzten Reise nach Rom bin ich in den Kaninchenbau der Empfehlungen von Redakteuren, Freunden und Einheimischen gefallen. Nachfolgend finden Sie drei unverzichtbare Orte zum Abendessen in Rom, die Sie sich nicht entgehen lassen sollten.

Pennestri-Restaurant

Es war reiner Zufall, dass ich in der Oktoberausgabe 2022 von Travel + Leisure auf dem Flug nach Rom von der Liebe der Gründerin von Chez Panisse, Alice Waters, zum Essen und Arbeiten in der Ewigen Stadt las. Ich hatte einige Wochen zuvor ein Abendessen in einem der Slow-Food-Lokale von Waters reserviert: Trattoria Pennestri in Ostiense, einem aufstrebenden Viertel nur für Einheimische, bekannt für seine lebhafte Straßenkunst, überfüllte Restaurants und, ich mache keine Witze, ein Eataly. Das Pennestri ist eine zeitgemäße Version einer typischen römischen Trattoria und ein gemütliches, aber lebendiges Vierteljuwel, das die Wanderung wert ist, wenn Sie zufällig in der anderen Stadt übernachten. Es ist die Art von Ort, der ohne Anmaßung über Beziehungen zu lokalen Bauern und kleinen Weinproduzenten spricht, wo das knusprige Brot in einer braunen Papiertüte kommt und niemand etwas dagegen hat, dass der flauschige weiße Hund am Tisch seines Besitzers um Essensreste bettelt (außer vielleicht für den Deutschen Schäferhund am Nebentisch). Erwarten Sie raffinierte, aber rustikale saisonale Gerichte neben traditioneller römischer Pasta (das Cacio e Pepe war das beste, das ich je hatte) und eine hervorragende italienische Weinkarte mit vielen erschwinglichen Optionen. Alter Bogen

Nachdem Sie einen Tag lang durch das böhmische Trastevere gewandert sind (ein Muss), nehmen Sie ein Taxi zum Gianicolo (alias Janiculum), um den Sonnenuntergang mit einem weiten Blick von einem der höchsten Hügel Roms zu genießen. Dann finden Sie sich für einen besonderen Anlass ohne allzu viel Aufhebens zum Abendessen im Antico Arco ein, einem der beliebtesten und angesagtesten Restaurants der Stadt seit seiner Eröffnung im Jahr 1996. Draußen schlürfen gut gekleidete Gäste Gin Tonic an Tischen, die im Mondlicht verstreut sind; Im Inneren sind intime Speisesäle in einem gemütlichen, aber modernen zweistöckigen Raum übereinander gestapelt. Es ist viel zu lange her, seit ich die Ewige Stadt das letzte Mal gesehen habe.

Vor nur einem Semester vor mehr Jahren, als ich zählen möchte, lebte ich in einem Studentenwohnheim auf einem Weinberg außerhalb von Rom, wo Sonnenblumen zum Gruß in den Himmel wuchsen und die Birnen, die von den Obstbäumen fielen, süßen Saft auf dich herabtropften Kinn und hinterlässt den klebrigen Rest purer, kindlicher Freude.

Ich studierte Englisch im Hauptfach, Nebenfach Philosophie und war fasziniert von allem, was antik war: klassische Mythologien mit all ihren schelmischen und lästigen Göttern; die Kunst, oft andächtig und oft auch recht frech; die jahrtausendealte Architektur, die sich das Recht verdient hatte, ein wenig nachzulassen, selbst wenn sie stolz, aber entspannter dastand, als sie vor über 2.000 Jahren erscheinen musste.

Wir folgten dem Weg der römischen Legionen entlang der Via Appia, verfolgten die Siege und Gefahren der Gladiatoren im Kolosseum, reckten unsere Hälse, um den Himmel in Michelangelos Sixtinischer Kapelle zu sehen, und bestaunten den feinen Regen, der durch das Okulus direkt auf Marmor fiel Stock von Agrippas exquisitem Pantheon.

Wir kauften Käse am Campo de’ Fiori, aßen (viel zu viel) Gelato und warfen unsere Münzen in den Trevi-Brunnen mit dem Wunsch, eines Tages zurückzukehren. Wir lernten, unsere Pizzen zu vierteln und sie mit der Effizienz einer einzelnen Scheibe zu verschlingen, und unseren Espresso im Stehen an der Bar zu trinken. Wir riefen Basta! bei allzu fürsorglichen italienischen Männern.

Wir haben uns in Bars in Trastevere betrunken, so getan, als würden wir Grappa mögen, und auf die harte Tour gelernt haben, dass die Kastanien, die zur Weihnachtszeit von den Straßenhändlern geröstet werden, nicht nach diesem verführerischen Aroma schmecken. Wir standen auf dem Forum Romanum und wurden von einem Säulenstumpf geschleudert, während wir Zeilen aus Shakespeares Julius Cäsar rezitierten („Freunde, Römer, Landsleute…“). Wir kreischten vor gespieltem Entsetzen, als wir unsere Hände in den Mund der Wahrheit steckten. Wir hatten eine Audienz beim Papst.

Es ist über 20 Jahre her, seit ich von Rom in mein damaliges Zuhause in Texas zurückgekehrt bin und mir geschworen habe, nie wieder ein Stück amerikanische Pizza zu essen (ein Gelübde, das glücklicherweise gebrochen wurde, als ich später nach San Francisco gezogen bin), als ich mich letzten Herbst auf dem Weg zurück nach San Francisco befand Rom, als Erwachsener und mit meiner Familie im Schlepptau, und ich verspüre den Drang, es noch einmal zu sehen. Noch bevor ich in Fiumicino lande, spüre ich bereits die unvermeidliche Enttäuschung, dass man nicht ganz Rom in eine viertägige Reise packen kann. Ich könnte es nicht in ein ganzes Semester packen. Und so beschließe ich mit meinem besten italienischen Achselzucken, mit dem Strom zu schwimmen, alles zu entdecken, was mich entdeckt, und zu versuchen, wirklich zu tun, was die Römer tun: das il dolce far niente anzunehmen, die Süße des Nichtstuns.

Dies ist der Teil der Geschichte, in dem ich gestehe, dass ich beim Nichtstun schwer gescheitert bin. Begleitet von einer Familie, die noch nie in Rom war, setzte ich brav meine Reiseleitermütze auf, um noch einmal mehr als 20.000 Schritte pro Tag durch den Vatikan, das Pantheon, das Kolosseum und die Villa Borghese zu stapfen. Und um eine andere Wahrheit zu sagen, ich habe alles aufgegessen wie eine große, fette Schüssel Cacio e Pepe.

Ich genoss es, mein Gedächtnis auf die Leckerbissen zu testen, die ich vor Jahrzehnten gelernt hatte, und genoss es, Dinge zu lernen, die ich beim ersten Mal vergessen oder verpasst hatte. Ich versuche, das Wort „episch“ für Dinge zu reservieren, die wirklich sind. Rom verdient das Adjektiv und ehrlich gesagt auch das Substantiv.

So wie die Stadt auf Infrastrukturschichten aus unzähligen vergangenen Jahrhunderten aufgebaut ist, birgt sie Schichten von Wundern, die es zu entdecken gilt, egal wie oft Sie sie besuchen. Die sehenswerten Denkmäler hier sind buchstäblich endlos, ebenso wie die hochwertigen Ressourcen da draußen, die sie sehr detailliert auflisten.

Also für diejenigen unter Ihnen, die il dolce far niente festnageln möchten, werde ich nur ein paar absolute Muss für Ihre nächste Reise nach Rom teilen: wo Sie übernachten, eine herrliche Tour und wo Sie essen und trinken können – denn wirklich, das Nichtstun Teil wird am besten mit einem Teller Pasta und einem Glas italienischem Rotwein genossen. Finden Sie sich in den Vierteln Monti, Testaccio, Ostiense und Trastevere wieder … und verlaufen Sie sich unterwegs.

Es ist die vielfältige Geschichte und Kultur, die über so viele Jahrhunderte weitergegeben und erschüttert wurde, die Rom so besonders macht. Zu sehen, wie Gen Zers Skateboard fahren und bis spät in die Nacht unter dem Schein des Kolosseums herumhängen, das 80 n. Chr. Fertiggestellt wurde, macht mir Gänsehaut. Ich frage mich, welche Weisheit die römische Jugend in einem solchen Kontext nur durch Osmose aufsaugen könnte, da sie nicht von Flüstern, sondern von Rufen aus der Vergangenheit umgeben ist.

Der zentral an der Piazza della Repubblica gelegene Palazzo Naiadi ist selbst ein Mikrokosmos der tiefen Geschichte Roms, seiner Gegenwart und seiner Zukunft. Das Hotel ist ein Marmorpalast aus dem 19. Jahrhundert mit neoklassizistischen Säulengängen und einem schicken Jugendstilgebäude, das über den Ruinen der antiken Diokletianthermen (fertiggestellt 306 n. Chr.) liegt, von denen Teile durch dicke Glasböden auf der untersten Ebene zu sehen sind –inspirierte Umgestaltung mit freundlicher Genehmigung seines neuesten Verwalters, der Anantara-Luxushotelgruppe. Mit 238 sehr eleganten Zimmern und Suiten fühlt sich das Palazzo Naiadi eher Boutique an, als es tatsächlich ist. Und während bestimmte Annehmlichkeiten noch renoviert werden oder auf Renovierungen warten, einschließlich des Pools auf dem Dach, werden Sie sich in der eleganten Lounge auf Lobby-Ebene wie zu Hause fühlen, wo zeitgenössische Schwarz-Weiß-Kunst, Samtmöbel und polierte Messingakzente einen stilvollen Sitzplatz bilden Aperitifs.

Dieser Ort, so haben wir aus Erfahrung gelernt, ist auch ein beliebter Treffpunkt für städtische Proteste. Bei unserem Besuch im vergangenen Herbst kam eine Versammlung zusammen, um sich gegen die neue Premierministerin, die konservative Giorgia Meloni, auszusprechen und uns einen Crashkurs in moderner italienischer Politik vor dem buchstäblichen Hintergrund der Antike anzubieten. Wir nahmen alles mit einem Glas Sekt von der schmalen Terrasse unserer Suite mit Blick auf die kreisförmige Piazza und den 1888 erbauten Najadenbrunnen auf.

Einheimische und Touristen machten gleichermaßen Fotos von uns, als wir über das Kopfsteinpflaster der engen römischen Gassen schwirrten – von der Piazza della Repubblica zum Trevi-Brunnen, zu einem Café am Pantheon für Cappuccinos nach Trastevere für Austern auf dem Freiluftmarkt und für ein schnelles Winken zum Petersdom. Die Vespa war genau richtig, um die Ewige Stadt zu erkunden. Klein und wendig hielten wir mit ihrer Energie Schritt; wir waren eins mit ihrem zeitlosen Lärm.

Die Concierges im Palazzo Naiadi waren sowohl entzückend freundlich als auch bereit, Lokale wie das Barzilai Bistrot aufzugeben, die nur Einheimischen vorbehalten sind. Im flippigen Viertel Monti wurde sein durchschnittliches traditionelles Essen dank einer ausgelassenen Unterhaltung mit seinen achtzigjährigen Besitzern und ihrem faulen Hund unvergesslich. Aber während ich das Mittagessen gerne dem Zufall überlasse, verlasse ich das Haus nie ohne eine Reservierung für das Abendessen. It’s time to move, says Anthony Meier about his new gallery in Mill Valley, California, directly across from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. He has been in business for four decades, specializing in contemporary masterpieces and operating his gallery from his home in Pacific Heights, San Francisco. Now that his children are grown and his wife wanted a change of scenery, they were looking for more idyllic locations.

“We looked at other cities to the north and a little bit to the east,” he says, while seated on an antique sofa in the private viewing room of his new location, “and nothing had both that energy and that art history that was there and beyond (Last November, Meier was named president of the Art Dealers Association of America.) Despite Marin County’s ritzy reputation, it used to have a reputation for being alternative and countercultural, and modernist artists and Beat poets called it home. Today, Mill Valley is a hill town with upscale boutiques and a gourmet market, and if you order an Uber, a Tesla might turn up.

“I think the other attraction is more space for our artists,” says Lauren Ryan, Meier’s business partner. “We have twice the exhibition space and more space for programs. And our gallery list is robust.” In addition to collaborating with artists like Larry Bell, Gerhard Richter, and Zoe Leonard, they also have younger artists like Sarah Cain.

The renovated gallery in the center of town is 5,000 square feet, approximately half of which is the main gallery and the other half is the private screening room furnished as a living room and study with select antique European furniture. The inaugural exhibit in the main gallery is In the Shadow of Mt. Tam (until March 17), curated by Ryan, and it’s surprisingly varied, showcasing the artists who lived and worked in the area after WWII. The title “Mt. Tam” is Mount Tamalpais, a cone-shaped mountain that stands out in the local landscape.

One of the most famous artists to come to the area was British painter Gordon Onslow Ford, who persuaded fellow artists Wolfgang Paalen and his wife Luchita Hurtado to move to the Bay Area and then buy a home in Mill Valley. They were later joined by Lee Mullican in the house, and the three men formed the group Dynaton, honing a style of surrealism touched by interests in ancient art and cosmic energies. Michael Auping calls them “pre-hippie surrealists” in his catalog essay on “In the shadow of the mountain Tam”.

Works by Paalen, Ford, Mullican and Hurtado are on display, but a small landscape by the latter catches the eye. She and Paalen later separated, married Mullican, and moved to Los Angeles. Her career was very much overshadowed by her husbands until interest in her work exploded after her inclusion on the 2018 Made in LA show at the Hammer Museum. It was then picked up by Hauser & Wirth.

Other artworks in the exhibition include works on paper and Masonite by Jay DeFeo, who was taking a break in nearby Larkspur to recover from the rigors of her epic painting The Rose (1966). The gallery entrance features a small painting of Mount Tamalpais by Etel Adnan, the poet and artist who settled in neighboring Sausalito. She once wrote, “When I stand on Mount Tamalpais, I am in the rhythm of the world. Everything seems right the way it is. I am in tune with the stars, for better or for worse.”

Meier’s move follows a turbulent period in the Bay Area art scene, during which some major galleries (like Pace and Gagosian) have moved out entirely, while others like Jessica Silverman have expanded their footprints. The city also gained a contemporary art institute, which opened last fall in the trendy Dogpatch neighborhood, which is also home to many galleries and the center of the Minnesota Street Project.

“Once you’ve spoken to a gallery in the Bay Area, their reach goes beyond a 50 or 100 mile radius,” says Meier. “So they chose to put their stake in the ground in San Francisco, we chose to put our stake in the ground in Mill Valley. We’re obviously closer to the people of the North Bay, but it’s not an uphill drive to visit us from the South Bay.”

He adds, “We didn’t move out of San Francisco, we just expanded our footprint.”

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz, the only Republican district attorney seeking re-election in Massachusetts, is trying to fend off a challenge from Democrat Rahsaan Hall this week.

The contest marks an important challenge for the so-called progressive prosecutor movement, which hopes to overhaul the criminal justice system and suffered key losses in Massachusetts this fall.

Timothy Shugrue defeated fellow Andrea Harrington, the progressive district attorney in Berkshire County, in the Democratic primary. Boston City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo, a progressive Democrat, lost his bid for Suffolk County district attorney to the more moderate Kevin Hayden, a fellow Democrat who was appointed as interim district attorney in January.

Nationally, progressives have also faced challenges around the country with concerns rising about crime in some major cities. For instance, San Francisco residents overwhelmingly voted to recall a progressive district attorney, Chesa Boudin, in June.

But Democrats are hoping to beat two Republicans in the Bay State on Tuesday. Democratic attorney Robert Galibois is running against Republican Assistant District Attorney Daniel Higgins for the district that includes Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The seat is open because longtime District Attorney Michael O’Keefe, a Republican, is retiring.

And in Plymouth County, Hall is challenging Cruz, the longtime Republican incumbent. Despite the recent setbacks in Massachusetts and across the country, Hall says there is still a lot of interest in criminal justice reform.

“The voices that would normally push for the type of reforms within the system aren’t there,” said Hall, who worked as a prosecutor in Suffolk County and led the ACLU’s racial justice program.

Hall, also an ordained minister, vowed to find “another way to deal with harm and disruption in a community that doesn’t over-criminalize and overburden people and still find ways to keep people safe and healthy in their communities.”

Hall says his views are similar to former Suffolk County district attorney and now US Attorney Rachael Rollins. He supports her so-called “do not prosecute” list of low level crimes where prosecutors wouldn’t automatically prosecute, but would seek diversion instead. Hall said he would also support reducing cash bail with the goal of eliminating it entirely.

“This is a very significant moment in the life of progressive reform in the criminal legal system here in Massachusetts,” Hall said.

Much of his time on the campaign trail has been focused on educating voters about the role of the county prosecutor and outlining his proposals to improve transparency and collect data to measure outcomes and the effectiveness of reforms. He said he realizes he’s running in what’s considered a more conservative part of a blue state, but he said he’s encouraged.

“Because the public narrative around this system tends to default to law and order and public safety, a lot of people don’t push for or expect the types of reforms that are achievable,” Hall said.

Hall points to research showing that crime declined in Suffolk County under Rollins. But Cruz, who has been district attorney in Plymouth for more than two decades, questions that research and says progressive reforms have been ineffective.

“People are talking about reimagining criminal justice,” Cruz said. “I don’t believe that our county is ready for the philosophies of a progressive district attorney who wants to turn a courthouse into a turnstile where people are coming in and out of there. I think that’s very dangerous and I think it doesn’t work.”

Cruz opposes reducing bail and creating a list of crimes that would not be automatically prosecuted. He also supports mandatory minimum sentences and opposes raising the age by which a juvenile charged with a crime is treated as an adult.

To be sure, Cruz acknowledges that many crimes are related to poverty, addiction and mental health, but he said his office already has programs to address those issues. He also said crime rates in Plymouth County are down, showing he has been effective as the region’s top prosecutor.

“We’re in an era where cases are going down, the people that are being incarcerated are going down,” Cruz said. “That means what you’re doing is working and you can continue to help your community and keep it safe and at the same time help people with these terrible diseases like addiction and mental health problems.”

Cruz also noted he has beaten a string of Democratic challengers before.

“I’m the last standing Republican DA, which is why there’s a target on my back,” Cruz said. “This is my sixth election and it’s the fourth time I’ve been contested. I think I’ve had more contested elections than all the other DAs put together.”

In addition, incumbents traditionally have a big advantage at the polls, particularly for low-profile races.

Still, Cruz may be vulnerable, according to Nasser Eledroos, managing director for Northeastern University’s Center for Law Information and Creativity. Eledroos says some recent studies have found criminal justice reform efforts are effective.

“The body of research is there,” Eledroos said. “It’s now a big, long game of trying to communicate that effectively to voters.”

Eledroos also thought the demographics in Plymouth County have gradually shifted, increasing the odds for Democratic challengers. President Joe Biden got 57% of the votes, compared to Donald Trump’s 40% two years ago.

The results for this year’s contest should be in the near future. Polls close in Massachusetts at 8 pm on Tuesday.

Ahmad Fawad Yusufi, a refugee from Afghanistan and father of three, was shot dead in a botched robbery attempt in San Francisco last month. His family says Yusufi, a former U.S. Army interpreter who lived in Sacramento, was in San Francisco driving for Uber, a job that was their only source of income.
