A beloved California aunt who helped send several of her nieces and nephews to college died Monday after a crazed homeless man pushed her onto a moving train, police reports said.

The 74-year-old woman was on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) platform at San Francisco's Powell Street Station when suspect Trevor Belmont allegedly pushed her into an oncoming train shortly after 11 p.m., BART police said.

The victim, identified by the coroner as Corazon Dandan, hit his head on the train and fell to the platform.

Corazon Dandan, 74, was killed Monday night when a homeless man allegedly pushed her onto a moving BART train. Family photo

She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where she later died, traffic police said.

Dandan, of San Mateo County, was on her way home from her job as a telephone operator at the Parc 55 hotel when she was killed, her nephew told the San Francisco Standard.

Alvin Dandan, a St. Louis doctor, said his aunt took the BART to work and back home every day and revealed his cousins recently warned her against using the BART late at night.

Corazon, who was divorced and never had children, continued to work well past the usual retirement age even though she did not need the income, he said.

“She just loved working and being around younger people,” Alvin told the local news publication.

She also loved her many nieces and nephews, he added, and helped finance his medical studies and the education of several of his cousins.

Shortly after the fatal shove, BART police arrested 49-year-old Trevor Belmont, also known as Hoak Taing, at the Powell Street Station. Hearst Newspapers via Getty Images

“Great doesn't even describe how I feel about this woman,” Alvin DanDan told The Standard on Tuesday. “I wouldn't be here and a lot of my cousins wouldn't be here. … She put a lot of people through school.”

Dandan landed in San Francisco from the Philippines in the 1980s “as a single, independent woman,” he added.

Alvin said he spoke to his aunt via text message the day she was murdered.

“She sounded cheerful,” he said.

Dandan's nephew, a doctor in St. Louis, said his aunt helped him finance his medical studies. AP

BART officers arrested the 49-year-old Belmont man shortly after the fatal shoving at the station. Police said the suspect, also known as Hoak Taing, was a “transient.”

Belmont was booked into the San Francisco County Jail on Tuesday morning. He remains behind bars on charges of murder and assault on an elderly person likely to cause serious injury.

Investigators have not yet determined a motive for this shocking crime and are continuing to interview witnesses and review surveillance videos.

The investigation is ongoing.

 SAN FRANCISCO –

On New Year’s Day almost two years ago, Parker Kinney spent the day with Brian Lilly Jr. at scenic Scripps Beach in the San Diego area and realized his friend had become a shadow of himself.

Kinney and Lilly walked in the sand for hours and went to dinner. At the end of the night before they said goodbye, they spoke about their struggles together when they rowed for the coach back at the University of California-San Diego and how it had affected their well-being.

But Kinney couldn’t fully grasp the depth of Lilly’s desperation that afternoon: The 19-year-old college rower took his own life just three days later.

Kinney believes his friend was marginalized by abuse from trainer Geoff Bond. Lilly’s parents see it the same way.

“This guy basically destroyed Brian’s self-esteem, his threat to kick Brian off the team. And I don’t need a sports psychologist here to tell me how damaging that was,” said father Brian Lilly Sr.

Brenda and Brian Lilly Sr. have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Bond and the school, alleging that the coach abused their son primarily because he challenged Bond’s decision to allow a rower, despite allegations of sexual misconduct against the athlete to stay in the team. They firmly believe their son was verbally abused by Bond, which led to his suicide in January 2021.

Kinney said he saw the abuse.

“I felt like they were trying to sweep the whole sexual assault allegation under the rug, and a decent number of kids had legitimate concerns about it and were like, ‘That’s pretty screwed up,'” Kinney said. “A lot of kids didn’t talk about it. Brian talked about it, so Geoff got revenge on him. Brian’s main concern was that this would damage the integrity of the team, I agree.”

Bond’s defense team, who trained at UC San Diego until last January, filed a motion to dismiss the Lillys’ case. The defense said Bond did not see Brian Lilly Jr. in the nine months before his death and that the trainer had inquired during the pandemic lockdown if Lilly was returning to school in San Diego from the East Coast, where he had been living .

Several of Bond’s former college rowers from Cal, Penn and UCSD also reached out to The Associated Press in support of the coach.

“I absolutely loved his coaching style and think it’s a great fit for young college kids,” Gary Champagne, who rowed for Bond at Cal in 2002-03 as a freshman, said via email.

Lilly family attorney Nicholas Lewis said Brian Lilly Jr. was involved in the rowing program from home by participating in the team’s regular video calls.

UC San Diego declined to comment through a spokesperson, citing pending litigation. The school gave no details as Bond departed as coach on January 13.

The Lillys said they are determined to protect others from the kind of treatment they believe their son has endured.

“My whole thing right now is giving my son a voice,” his father said. “He was the ultimate underdog. He was a hero.”

Lilly’s parents said their son never suffered from mental illness before rowing at UCSD.

Lewis said the teenager briefly underwent inpatient treatment in July 2020 after experiencing what the attorney described as psychotic and schizophrenic symptoms, including paranoia and disorganized thoughts, before Lilly stabilized within days and then spent the rest of the year dying continued outpatient therapy. Bond’s defense has argued the trainer was never aware of Lilly’s emotional state.

The Lillys said their son overcame a lot to even emerge as a collegiate rower. Her son used to be “a chubby little guy,” his father said, because of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, which he eventually outgrew through hard work and eating right. He ran the New York City Marathon and completed an Ironman triathlon in Lake Placid.

Brian Lilly Sr. recalled how his son strained so much he threw up multiple times during a rowing session in February 2020, and that Bond described the vomiting as a “weaker” reaction.

Some rowers who competed for Bond at UC San Diego have had similar experiences, describing a culture in which Bond used crass and abusive language, among other disparagements regularly uttered in front of athletes.

Kinney said that in March 2020, Bond yelled at him on the water with inflammatory language about Kinney’s friendship and support of Lilly.

“I was paralyzed with fear. I was 18,” Kinney said. “I called my father. I lost respect for the program.”

Kinney eventually left the team, and others left as well, with at least some of them sharing that rowing for Bond had affected their mental health.

Now Kinney really misses his friend and a sport he used to love: “I’m pretty deaf to it myself.”

San Francisco 49ers player Charles Omenihu was arrested by police in Northern California this week, a day after his team cemented its place in the NFC Championship Game.

Omenihu, 25, was arrested after San Jose police received a report of a domestic violence incident Monday afternoon.

When officers arrived at the scene of the alleged incident, an adult woman claiming to be Omenihu’s girlfriend accused the 6ft five, 280lb defense attorney of pushing her to the ground during an argument.

“Officials did not find any visible physical injuries on the survivor, however she had a complaint of pain in her arm,” police said in a statement.

“The survivor was refusing any medical attention at the time officials were conducting the investigation,” they added.

A representative for Omenihu did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Police noted that Omenihu was making a statement and was cooperating with officers when they arrived at the location on Santana Row in West San Jose.

Citing the woman’s testimony and her complaint of pain, they arrested Omenihu on a domestic violence misdemeanor. The woman also sought and obtained a restraining order, which officers served on Omenihu.

“Omenihu was committed to the main Santa Clara County Jail on charges of domestic violence, has since posted bail and is no longer in custody,” the department said.

“The case will be referred to the Santa Clara County Attorney’s Office for possible charges,” they added. “This is an ongoing investigation and further details will be released as they become available.”

In a statement to PEOPLE, the 49ers said they are “aware of the affair with Charles Omenihu and are in the process of gathering more information.”

The team will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.

TORONTO – People are changing their profile pictures on social media to honor a San Francisco senior who died after being knocked to the ground in an allegedly racially motivated attack on his family.

Vicha Ratanapakdee, 84, died on January 31 at San Francisco General Hospital “from injuries sustained a few days earlier during his morning walk in the Anza Vista neighborhood,” according to GoFundMe, organized by family member Eric Lawson.

Lawson describes Ratanapakdee as originally from Thailand and as an “almost blind, gentle person loved by his family” who was “forcibly taken from them”.

“Our family has seen several verbal anti-Asian attacks since the pandemic started … this time it was fatal. Racism has again proven deadly. Anti-Asian racism has become a very serious threat to all Asian Americans, especially in San Francisco, ”Lawson wrote.

The San Francisco District Attorney has filed charges of murder and elder abuse against the 19-year-old suspect in the Antoine Watson case, calling the crime a “brutal murder”.

The charges against Watson have not been proven in court. Local media reports said he pleaded not guilty when he first appeared in court.

In a surveillance video showing the attack, a man is seen walking in from the right side of the frame and violently knocking Ratanapakdee to the ground, where the senior remains vulnerable. The man then seems to calmly walk away.

“At around 8:30 am on January 28, 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee was violently and abruptly attacked by a man in the Anza Vista neighborhood,” said the district attorney’s release.

“The murder of Mr Ratanapakdee … was particularly painful for the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) community, which has been the victim of numerous cases of violence, hatred and racism since the beginning of the pandemic,” the press release said District Attorney Chesa Boudin further describes it as a “terrible, pointless” attack.

Los Angeles-based illustrator Jonathan D. Chang paid tribute to Ratanapakdee on Monday with a stylized portrait and wrote in an Instagram post about his “condolences to the family” and his hope that “justice will be served”.

“After watching the video, I expressed (my friend Sarah) how frustrated I was that this was going to be another sweep under the carpet attack on an Asian American,” Chang wrote in an email to CTVNews.approx.

“It gave me the idea to make a sketch of him to give the incident a face and to raise awareness of how terrible and widespread the anti-Asian crimes were.”

In response, social media users changed their profile pictures to Chang’s portrait of Ratanapakdee in a show of solidarity.

“People like Mr. Ratanapakdee should take it easy and enjoy the rest of their lives at their old age without being murdered on the street for no reason,” wrote Chang. “There have been so many attacks on the elderly in Asia and outside of Asia-facing social media sites that they are not being reported.”

“If we don’t show that we care about injustices that happen to our own community, why should anyone care?”

A message attributed to Ratanapakdee’s daughter on the GoFundMe page stated, “There are no words that can describe how our family feels about this overwhelming loss. Our father goes on his morning walk following his daily routine of preparing his young grandchildren for their day after. I just survived his recent heart surgery and then kept coming back to our family. It’s that pointless [sic]. ”

The GoFundMe raised more than $ 35,000 for the family to cover funeral arrangements.
