They call it the “hill bomb” and it happens every year, but the San Francisco Police have tried to prevent it.

They set up barricades on several blocks of Dolores Street, but the skaters simply went down another street.

“I guess the police aren't as interested in this one as they were in Dolores,” said Amire Lofton, who attended. “Four skaters, they all said Church Street and they all just came here.”

RELATED: 'You could get arrested': SFPD warns skaters planning to attend Dolores Park Hill bomb blast

The police were on the mountain but did not intervene. They even blocked the road for the skaters.

Last year, San Francisco police attempted to prevent the Hill Bomb and a confrontation broke out between them and the skaters. Over 100 people were arrested for throwing objects at police and damaging a MUNI train.

Police Chief Bill Scott said this week he would not tolerate violence.

Many skaters feel the city should have worked with them to keep the event going while ensuring safety.

“The city was not warned about this event without adequate warning,” said Aaron Breetwor, a skateboard activist from San Francisco. “I was in contact with them a year ago trying to get them to make the event safer, even though there was no official organizer, and they had nothing planned other than this.”

RELATED TOPICS: What will happen at this year's Dolores Park Hill bombing? SFPD advises not to go

Breetwor claims skateboards are listed as a non-motorized, user-powered vehicle in the city's traffic code. He plans to continue talking with the city.

However, residents of the park were happy to see the police.

“It's about public safety. It's not about the kids not having fun,” said Chuck Louden, who lives near the park. “I'm glad to see them here today. We can work together to find a place that works for everyone, but this is about safety.”

We have reached out to the San Francisco Police Department to ask why they did not intervene in the bombing on the hill and are now waiting for a response.

The Mission District will have one less place for casual vibes and upscale beer and burgers: The Monk's Kettle is closing its original location at 3141 16th Street and moving to Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood. According to a press release, the 16th Street location will remain open through June; The Monk's team will then move operations to the Oakland space and plans to host a grand opening in early fall. In the press release, co-owner Christian Albertson cites an expired rental agreement and the possibility of a new location with larger space and better offerings as the reason for the move. The San Rafael outpost remains unchanged.

As part of the farewell, Albertson also wrote a letter titled “Reflections on a 16-Year Run on 16th Street,” in which he discussed the vastly different landscape in San Francisco than when the dimly lit destination for hazy IPAs and pretzel rolls opened . Albertson says that when he opened in 2007, San Francisco was a “community.” [that] was more focused on going out and experiencing the world through its restaurants, bars and shops.” The app-based delivery boom in the early 2010s for a gastropub was never a good thing, he writes. If 20 percent of every sale goes to another company, the money dries up—plus the experience of hanging out with friends over a basket of fries and a Cellarmaker beer. “For the first nine years of our tenure, our kitchen was open until 1 a.m. every night and we kicked people out at 2 a.m.,” the note reads in part. “These days, closing at 11 p.m. often feels too late.”

        The monk's kettle

In addition to changing restaurant trends, Albertson cites the recent influx of tech workers as a major problem for his industry. Instead of people in neighborhoods like the Mission investing and taking the time to become regulars at bars and restaurants, “the workers at these companies are here on short-term contracts with contracts for a year (or less)” and “that's what they are.” far less inclined to support their local district; They're more likely to head to desirable hotspots before heading to wherever the next job takes them.” He says these reasons and more make San Francisco more ephemeral than ever, adding to the reality of being a small business owner here make challenge.

The Monk's Kettle will take over the former Citron space at 5484 College Avenue. The release touts an open floor plan for a large bar — fans of the business can expect the lion's head bar to move to the East Bay — and a dining room with a large back patio next to a lemon tree and a trellis overhead. Parklets in front of the restaurant expand seating capacity. Closing events and sales, including a time travel tour of vintage menus and cellar beers, will take place in the following months. Updates will be posted on Monk's Kettle's social media channels. “So we head to Rockridge to start the new neighborhood bar,” Albertson’s letter continued. “We hope to see you all there.”

Monk's Kettle (3141 16th Street) will remain open through June and is open Sunday through Thursday from noon to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to midnight.

The location of longtime seaside diner Louis’ Restaurant may become the home of a new restaurant, according to the National Park Service, which owns the San Francisco building.

“The NPS is currently working toward a Request for Proposal (RFP) in the future for a tenant to occupy 902 Point Lobos Ave to operate a restaurant,” park service spokesperson Julian Espinoza said in an email.

The park service had previously said that there was no search process underway, but that it would “maintain the building and evaluate its potential use for the future.”

People walk past Louis’ Restaurant on Feb. 17, 2023, located near Land’s End.
The service did not say when the request for proposal, a formal document asking for vendor bids, would be released. The service had a bidding process for the former Cliff House restaurant nearby, and has selected a new operator, but has not shared further details.

READ MORE: Cliff House To Reopen as New Mystery Restaurant This Year

Louis’ Restaurant closed in August 2020 after more than 80 years in business, just months before it was due to renew its lease. The months of closure due to Covid made it infeasible to stay open.

Tom Hontalas, former co-owner of Louis’ Restaurant, stands outside the iconic 1930s coastal diner. | Garrett Leahy/The Standard

Whoever takes over the building will have to address needed repairs to the building, which has not been fully renovated in decades, Espinoza said.

Public documents say that while the building is in “good overall condition,” the building would not be up to current building code and would need even more modifications if the next restaurant there wanted to expand the space.

Laurie Thomas, head of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, said that renovation of professional kitchens can be very expensive.

“Once you get into plumbing and electrical, you can easily get to $100,000,” Thomas said.

Tom Hontalas, former co-owner of Louis’ Restaurant, said that he was excited to see who ends up taking over.

“I wish them the best, and look forward to seeing what they’ll do with the place,” Hontalas said. “Maybe one day I’ll drop in. I don’t think I’ll say who I am, but I’d check it out.”

Sweeping views of Siletz Bay. Wide decks to soak in the sun (sometimes). A beautiful, open dining hall with a seafood market and crab boil, and a merch area complete with a second bar.

Much like the previous three, Pelican Brewing has nailed its fourth location. I’m not going to say it surpasses the original spot in Pacific City, a place that, for me and years of wedding anniversary memories, is held aloft with its sand-adjacent patio, view of Haystack Rock and the towering sand dune to the north that my wife makes me climb every year (somehow inexplicably this does not diminish my memories). But you may disagree with me, because Pelican’s Siletz Bay brewpub, at the southern end of Lincoln City, is truly a “wow” kind of place.

I made my first trip out there earlier this month for a long weekend with my wife. The place had its official opening in the fall after a very soft partial opening last June, but the crew is now ramping up for a first full summer of service, so I wanted to write about it before the sun arrives (will it ever, I ask ya). Our reaction to Pelican Siletz Bay is summed up by this: We fully intended to eat at three different places on our three nights at the coast, but after our first visit to Pelican on Saturday, we found ourselves back there Sunday night (on night one, smoked tri-tip flatbread for her and 14-hour slow smoked tri-tip for me, and two brewpub cheeseburgers on the return trip).

The new kitchen is big, and from the dining room you can watch the efficient production and flow of a menu that features familiar staples from Pelican’s other locations (Cannon Beach and Tillamook are spots two and three) but also some new offerings that include locally sourced seafood and produce. An annex called Phil’s Nest (Phil, I learned, is the name of the pelican in the brewery’s logo) is open and gearing up for summer, with separate seating, a fireplace and bar, offering guests a seafood market and crab boil — perfect for taking out onto the wooden decks that front Siletz Bay. When the weather allows, those are lined with Adirondack chairs and tables, an unrivaled way to wait for a table with a beer or languish away an afternoon or evening.

Inside, the elegantly appointed restaurant is topped by a mezzanine dining area and private spaces that can be rented for parties or company gatherings. All take in the views of the bay offered by windows stretching from floor to a wood ceiling high above. A large central bar serves Pelican’s familiar and new styles, from flagship Kiwanda Cream Ale to one of my favorite of their newer beers, Hoppa Don’t Preach, a danky Northwest IPA. Speaking of beer, Pelican has moved its original 15-barrel brewery from Pacific City to Siletz Bay, with the glistening tanks one of the first things you see when you pull into the parking lot, and it’s cranking out the beers you’ll find on tap there (the larger production brewery for distribution beer remains in Tillamook). Brand manager Alexandra Pallas walked me through the place and through one of Pelican’s newest endeavors — hop water, a great alternative for drivers and those abstaining from alcohol. The line is called Sparkle Hops, and they’re tasty, refreshing and subtle, with Strata + Acai and Citra + Lemon the first available.

I could go on and on about the place, but go see it for yourself. Make the call on whether your introverted self prefers sitting inside and watching rain spritz the windows (go now), or your extrovert craves the warm hustle and bustle of crowds sipping suds on a sunny deck (go this summer). See you there.

Takeoff approaching for Crux Portland Pub

The previous tenant moves out recently at the future home of Crux Portland Pub.

The plane has left the hangar at Crux Fermentation Project’s upcoming Southeast Portland location. Formerly home to Vagabond Brewing’s Portland location, Crux took over the space after Salem-based Vagabond shut down all of its operations during the pandemic. Bend-based Crux is busy getting its second location ready for us, and part of the operation is getting rid of the Cessna plane Vagabond had perched up near the ceiling. “The plane is awesome and was a great part of the Vagabond plan … but it was their thing and not ours, so it’ll be coming out,” Crux marketing director Jason Randles told me a while back. He says they are still shooting for a June opening for the Crux Portland Pub, which will be in the Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood at 2715 S.E. Eighth Ave., Suite 172, formerly part of the Darigold dairy complex. Randles says lots of work is going on behind the walls, and Crux has started an Instagram page where you can track progress.

2022 was stable, Brewers Association says

The Brewers Association, the national group that represents small and independent craft breweries and homebrewers, this week released production figures that showed 2022 remained relatively unchanged from 2021. Small and independent brewers produced 24.3 million barrels of beer, on par with 2021′s numbers, and craft’s overall beer market share by volume grew to 13.2%, up from 13.1% in 2021. Overall, the beer market shrank 3% by volume in 2022.

The estimated retail dollar value was $28 billion, representing a 24.6% market share and 6% growth over 2021. The association said sales growth was stronger than volume because of pricing and a shift to smaller brewers — who are more likely to sell onsite and through distributed draft — as well as the continued shift back to on-premise sales, which has a higher retail value. Craft brewers provided 189,413 direct jobs, a 9% increase from 2021, driven both by growth in the number of breweries and a continued shift to hospitality-focused business models.

Bart Watson, the Brewers Association’s chief economist, said that “2022 presented small brewers with a number of challenges, including rising operating and material costs and increasing competition, particularly in distribution. In this maturing and competitive market, collective growth for the category is hard to come by.”

The report was numbers heavy, so here’s a look at the highlights:

Last week my colleague, The Oregonian/OregonLive restaurant critic Michael Russell, broke the news that Portland International Airport in 2024 will have 20 new shops and restaurants in the redesigned main terminal concourse debuting next year. Those will include the fourth location of Loyal Legion Beer Hall, so I followed up and spoke with Kurt Huffman, whose ChefStable restaurant group operates Loyal Legion.
The location of the longtime oceanfront restaurant, Louis’ Restaurant, could become home to another new restaurant, according to the National Park Service, which owns the building.

“The NPS is currently working on a future RFP for a tenant to occupy 902 Point Lobos Ave to operate a restaurant,” NPS spokesman Julian Espinoza said in an email.

The park service had previously said that no search process was underway, but that they were “maintaining the building and assessing its potential use for the future.”

People walk past Louis’ restaurant which is located near Land’s End on February 17, 2023. The diner closed in 2020. | Garrett Leahy/The Standard

The NPS did not say when the RFP would be released. The NPS has had a bidding process for the former Cliff House restaurant and has selected a new operator but has given no further details.

CONTINUE READING: Cliff House reopens this year as a new mystery restaurant

Louis’ restaurant closed in August 2020 after more than 80 years in business, just months before it was due to renew its lease. Months of closure due to Covid made it impossible to stay open.

Whoever takes over the building will have to make necessary repairs to the building, which hasn’t been fully renovated in decades, Espinoza said.

Public documents say the building, while in “good overall condition,” would not meet current building codes and would require more remodeling if the next restaurant there wanted to expand the space.

Laurie Thomas, executive director of the Golden Gate restaurant association, said that renovating professional kitchens can be very expensive.

Once you get into plumbing and electrical, you can easily get to $100,000,” Thomas said.

Tom Hontalas, a former co-owner of Louis’ restaurant, said he was curious to see who would eventually take over.

“I wish them the best and I look forward to seeing what they will do with the place,” Hontalas said. “Maybe I’ll stop by one day. I don’t think I’ll say who I am, but I would check it out.”

Crustacean is preparing for a big move: After 32 years at its Polk Street location, the restaurant is nearing the end of its lease and is slated to move downtown to 191 Pine Street, reports the San Francisco Business Times. The new space will be larger at 5,686 square feet and will have a much larger kitchen. (And yes, the Business Times has confirmed that another “secret kitchen” will be built into the new location for chef Helene An.)

Construction on the new premises began last week and restaurant group House of An confirmed they plan to open the new location at the end of the year in time for the holiday season.

Silver Oak takes over a neighboring winery with a new purchase

Napa’s Silver Oak Cellars is poised to expand its local presence with the recent purchase of State Ranch Vineyard, which owns 36 acres of grapes, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The selling price was not disclosed, but the move was seen as “a way to ensure there will be enough grapes for years to come”.

A food truck finds its permanent home

Cochinita served Yucatan food as a food truck for years, and now the San Francisco Standard reports that the owners are preparing their permanent South San Francisco restaurant to open in late April. The move will allow partners Karen Gonzalez and Sergio Albornoz to expand their menu by adding things like Yucatec tamales and Relleno Negro.

The Tai San restaurant is set to close after 30 years

Fans of Berkeley’s long-established Tai San restaurant have until the end of the month to visit before it closes for good, reports East Bay Nosh. The Elmwood restaurant opened in 1986 and serves Chinese take-out, but now the owner told the news outlet they were closing because “not enough business, rent, everything, you know! Everything.” Last business day is Tuesday 28 February.
