About 10 people had lined up outside the San Francisco Centre on Market Street to be among the first shoppers walking in when mall workers threw open the doors for Black Friday.

In years past, John and Michelle McGuire would leave their San Francisco home to head downtown, arriving at the mall before dawn and joining throngs of eager shoppers looking for deals only getable on this day.

But this year, the kids were grown and the best deals were online. So the McGuires waited in line for another reason — nostalgia.

Article continues below this ad

“There’s a lot of history — that’s why I come back,” McGuire said.

At San Francisco’s premier shopping hubs, the jostling, deal-hungry crowds of a bygone Black Friday era were largely absent. The holiday trappings were there — adoptable puppies and kitties cuddling in the windows at Macy’s in Union Square; instrumental holiday tunes soaring from loudspeakers at Stonestown Galleria; and a Christmas tree festooned silver and gold ornaments soared above the entrance hall at the San Francisco Centre downtown. But relatively few shoppers showed up to enjoy them.

Hendra Hutama had only rung up two sales more than two hours into her shift at Bloomingdale’s, where she’s worked for 17 years at the San Francisco Centre. She expects the crowds to pick up in December, and in the meantime she was busy answering patron questions through the retailer’s website.

“The shopping experience is not what it used to be,” Hutama said.

This summer, mall owner Westfield gave up its namesake San Francisco mall under significant financial duress following the hollowing out of downtown due to the rise in remote work and the departure of key anchor tenants like Nordstrom’s. Renamed the San Francisco Centre, the mall is still struggling to bring patrons to Market Street.

At the Stonestown Galleria, shoppers flocked to Japanese homegoods store Daiso and Chinese retailer Miniso on Friday, while other stores like Sephora and Zara were relatively empty.

Tamisha Mouton, 49, came to Stonestown from Hayward to shop at a curated thrift store called 2nd Street. Not many years ago, finding a thrift store inside a mall would’ve been unimaginable, but as malls try to stay alive as online shopping has taken over, more stores like it are popping up.

While the mall’s main rotunda was bustling, the hallways elsewhere felt empty. A whole section of massage chairs stood empty next to a Taiwanese restaurant and a revolving sushi bar.

“I wish there were still more anchor stores,” Mouton said. “Now it seems like you have these small shops where you can get something unique or exclusive. But for Black Friday shopping, it doesn’t feel like a regular mall anymore.”

Linda Barry, a resident of Martinez across the bay in Contra Costa County, has been coming to Union Square on the Friday after Thanksgiving for more than 15 years. Sipping coffee during a shopping break, she said she was surprised by how few others had come to the city’s prime shopping district. Too many storefronts were vacant, she said.

“I thought it would be a lot more people, a little more crowded,” she said. “But I’m hearing different languages, so it seems that there are tourists out.”

Several Union Square store workers said they didn’t think shoppers felt safe walking around with big shopping bags due to reports of robberies and thefts in the area. Some stores have started holding customers’ bags with purchased items so they can continue shopping empty-handed.

Back at the San Francisco Centre, fashion student Stephanie Maldonado was on the hunt for new sneakers to add to her collection. Before moving to San Francisco two years ago, Maldonado used to go Black Friday shopping in South Carolina with her mother where they had fewer choices. She likes the pace of a quieter Black Friday and the variety of stores in the mall.

“I need to end the day with at least one (shopping) bag,” she said.

WEDNESDAY

El Camino 229, Burlingame 232

The Colts picked up their biggest win of the season, handing the Panthers their second PAL Ocean loss of the year at Fleming Golf Course in San Francisco.

Kami Madhwar led El Camino, carding a 44. Francesca Junio added a 45 for the Colts, Mikayla Levene a 46, and Saoirse Price and Kristal Alcarez both posted 47s.

Burlingame was led by Ellie Dowd, who earned low-round honors with a 42, which included three pars. Sienna Piazza Fuss carded a 46, Taylor Oldenburg a 47 and Noor Hafezi a 48 for the Panthers.

Aragon 221, Menlo-Atherton 268

Kate Chong fired a 1-over 36 to lead the Dons to the win over the Bears at Poplar Creek Golf Course in San Mateo.

Hannah Lin added 42 for the Dons, Addison Padian had a 47, while Bridget Stewart and Ariel Ogawa both carded 48 for Aragon.

M-A was led by Erin Moslander, who finished with a 50.

Menlo School 32, Notre Dame-Belmont 0

Menlo School 18, King’s Academy 14

The Knights won their seventh and eighth straight games with the sweep of the Tigers and TKA in their first home jamboree of the season.

Menlo quarterback Ava Allen was nearly unstoppable against NDB as the freshman threw five touchdown passes. Sophie Housser, whose interception return set up the Knights’ first score, got into the end zone twice off Allen passes. Summer Young, Kylie Jones and Ellie Knoll all had scoring receptions, as well.

Against King’s Academy, Allen accounted for three more scores — one throwing, one receiving and one rushing. Allen caught a scoring pass from Paige Miller to cut the TKA lead to 8-6. Allen then connected with her fifth receiver of the day, Krista Arreola, to give Menlo a 12-8 lead.

Allen ran for a score to ice the game for Menlo.

Josiah Yeager scored seven times to lead the Knights over the Dons, setting a new school career goal-scoring record in the process.

Yeager came into the match one goal behind Renato Hodzic, who held the record since 2004. Yeager has now scored 355 goals.

Hillsdale improves to 7-3 in Bay play and 11-6 overall. Aragon falls to 3-7 in league play.

Menlo-Atherton 13, Sequoia 4

After needing overtime to beat the Ravens in their first meeting, the Bears won going away in the rematch.

JD Coolican led the offense for M-A (9-1 PAL Bay), scoring four times. Goalie Arman Azadpohr finished with eight saves.

Sequoia falls to 7-4 in Bay Division play.

Woodside 11, Terra Nova 4

Webster Antonchuk continues his strong play for the Wildcats, scoring six times to lead Woodside past the Tigers.

Thomas Beasley and Owen Weibel each added two goals for Woodside (9-2 PAL Bay). Goalie Max Mueller continues to stand on his head, finishing with 16 saves.

Terra Nova falls to 0-12 in league play.

Sacred Heart Prep 13, St. Francis 9

Tied 2-2 after the first period, the Gators outscored the Lancers 7-4 in the middle two periods on their way to the WCAL victory.

Clay Carrington had a big game for SHP, scoring four times and setting up two more. Andrew Spencer added a hat trick and two assists, while Tyler Hogan had three assists to go along with two goals. Nelson Harris and Oliver Marcin each scored two apiece.

SHP goalie Murdock Baker-Matsusoka finished with eight saves.

After a rare scoreless first period, the Knights pulled away in the second half to beat the Padres in a WCAL matchup.

Scoreless after one, the game was still tight at halftime, with Menlo nursing a 4-3 lead. In the second half, however, the Knights outscored the Padres 8-3.

Alex Stoffel led the way for Menlo, scoring five goals. Teddy Meeks was the assist leader with four; goalie Cormac Mulloy had six steals and Bernardo Oliviera had three defensive blocks.

The Wildcats stayed in a first-place tie with M-A after beating the Tigers.

Margot Legros and Megan Hohl each scored four goals for Woodside (8-1 PAL Bay), with Legros adding three steals.

Terra Nova (5-5) got a hat trick from Sascha Ebinger.

Notre Dame-Belmont 14, Capuchino 9

Mallory Moore is still in a scoring groove, finding the back of the net time nine times. Samantha Gould finished with seven saves for NDB (6-4 PAL Ocean).

Capuchino (3-7) got five goals from Quinlyn Quintana.

Sacred Heart Prep 12, St. Francis 10

Leading 4-0 after the first period, the Gators had to weather a furious Lancers comeback, holding on for the WCAL win.

The match turned into a battle between SHP’s Vivian Golub and St. Francis’ Anna Fazioli. Golub paced the Gators’ attack with six goals. But SHP could not stop Fazioli, who torched them for all 10 of her team’s goals.

We’ve been at full steam this week and with a clean throw yesterday we were able to increase our weekly record to 15-5.

Let’s wrap up successfully with a complete list of Friday games and bets.

The model

The process is relatively simple. First, I assume that the (implicit) run totals for both teams are roughly efficient throughout the game. This is the case in most cases. This saves me the trouble of predicting the total number of runs scored in the game – and allows me to focus solely on “when” and not “how many”.

Next, I created a database of pitchers’ first-time performance during the order versus their overall stats. Since the latter will presumably factor into the game total, I wanted to find out if those runs are coming early or late.

Most — but not all — MLB starters do slightly better early in games, but there is some variation in elevation. The model uses xFIP (expected Fielding Independent Pitching) as the ERA predictor of choice.

But that’s only half the battle, the other half is made up of crimes. To do this, I looked at what percentage of a team’s total runs are produced by the top three batters in the lineup.

While a first inning run is scored, by definition it takes at least four batsmen to get on the plate, but one of the first three must actually score. The metric of choice here is wRC+, based on each team’s predicted lineup for the day.

This is somewhat of a tradeoff, as lineups (and totals) can change throughout the day, especially when key contributors miss time. However, in my experience, the inefficiency of the morning lines more than makes up for the gaps in the model.

However, be wary if Mike Trout, for example, is considered a doubt for the evening’s game.

The picks

For all of the tips below, I’ll provide the choice, best line, and threshold I would bet on. These will be published in the morning. So, if important news is published between posting and reading, be sure to take that into account.

Rather than betting on the traditional YRFI/NRFI, on rare occasions they will specifically bet on one team or the other to score a run, which is only a betting option at DraftKings as of this writing.

Because the model treats each team individually, it is sometimes assumed that a team will receive a larger percentage of run equity in the first inning than the betting lines allow for.

NRFI odds and tips for Friday 2nd June

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals NRFI: Thanks to the nine games, we have a good starting position here. However, both pitchers have solid first-in-order stats, and these teams rank 29th and 30th when it comes to the percentage of their output from the top three hitters.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates YRFI: This game has an even higher overall score at 9.5, with both teams roughly average in top 3 hitter performance. Both starters have solid first lap splits but not enough to overcome the other factors.

Colorado Rockies vs. Kansas City Royals YRFI: This is another 9.5 run total game, although there are two relatively weak offenses overall. On the plus side, both handle a relatively high proportion of their offense from the top of their respective lineups.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Houston Astros NRFI: We have a strong duel here where two teams I generally prefer to bet YRFIs on against two pitchers I like to bet NRFIs on. Both Shohei Ohtani and Framber Valdez have excellent first time-through-the-order numbers and should have what it takes to deal with all the star hitters they face in the first inning.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees YRFI: Tonight in LA is Clayton Kershaw vs. Luis Severino, a match that sounds better for the NRFI on paper.

The model likes the yes-runs side, though, mostly because by this point in his career, Kershaw has become a “feeling” pitcher who’s getting into games better and better.

Severino has a 1.59 ERA in two starts, but has xFIP and SIERA scores in the mid-four range, so it could be a step backwards for him too.

Baltimore Orioles vs. San Francisco Giants YRFI: Based on the odds, this is my favorite bet tonight. I’m shocked that we’re getting plus money here as both teams are top-heavy offensive players. Also, neither pitcher is particularly dominant the first time in the sequence.

The Huskies overcame a sluggish first half to beat San Francisco 61-46 in the opening round of the WNIT. Dalayah Daniels finished the game with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Next, they will be hosting New Mexico on a date that is TBD but will happen sometime between Saturday and Tuesday.

There were reports that PJ Fuller was planning to enter the transfer portal, but that hasn’t happened yet (although it’s still very possible).

Congratulations to the Montana-Utah Dawg Fan for placing 1st in the UW Dawg Pound Bracket Pool after Day 1 of the NCAA Tournament with an impressive 13/16 games. Condolences to the trio of contestants who made Arizona win it all after screwing up the bed as No. 2 against Princeton.

Former huskies Emmitt Matthews Jr. and Erik Stevenson were eliminated in the first game of the day yesterday when their No. 8 West Virginia Mountaineers fell to Maryland. Stevenson shot 4/17 from the field while Matthews had just 2 points (the first of the game) and suffered a shoulder injury in the 2nd half. Former Dawg RaeQuan Battle plays for the No. 14 Montana State tonight at 6:40 p.m. on CBS.

High levels of wood smoke pollution were expected to make air quality unhealthy Friday, leading regional air quality officials to ban most fires.

The Spare the Air Alert prohibits using fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits, chimneys or other wood-burning devices. The ban doesn’t apply to households with no other heat source.

Wood smoke accounts for about one-third of fine particulate matter pollution in the Bay Are during winter months, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Last week, the public health departments in San Francisco and Marin counties announced changes to COVID-19 face mask requirements in indoor settings. On Friday, the softened mandates went into effect.

In both counties, an exemption allows people to remove their masks in some indoor settings where stable groups of fully vaccinated people gather. Think of these settings as places where the same group of people get together again and again, such as yoga classes or office settings.

Those places include offices, gyms, fitness centers, employee commuter vehicles, religious gatherings, college classes and other indoor gatherings, not exceeding 100 people.

The employer, or the host of the indoor gatherings, is required to control access and verify that everyone present is fully vaccinated. They must also ensure proper ventilation, no recent COVID-19 outbreaks, and that guests and children under 12 are not present, among other safety measures, the counties said.

The new exemption does not apply to public indoor settings such as retail stores, bars and restaurants or other places of businesses that are open to the public. People can continue to remove their masks temporarily in restaurants and bars to eat or drink.

San Francisco specifically noted that masks are still required in “shared indoor areas such as common areas of a building, [including] elevators, lobbies and restrooms, where people from different workplace settings could interact.”

For more information on SF’s revised mandate, visit sfmayor.org.

For more details on Marin’s softened mandate, visit marincounty.org.

When will SF and Marin and other Bay Area counties fully lift the indoor mask mandate?

Last week, San Francisco and Marin — along with six other Bay Area counties, including Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Contra Costa, Marin, Sonoma and Napa — also presented three criteria for when mask mandates can be lifted entirely.

First, a county must reach the “moderate” (yellow) tier of case rates, as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s data tracker, and remain there for three weeks. Marin is the only county in the state in the yellow tier; it moved into this lower-risk position two days ago.

Second, the county’s health officer must determine that COVID-19 hospitalizations are “low and stable.”

Finally, 80% of a county’s total population must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or eight weeks after a COVID-19 vaccine has been authorized for children ages 5 to 11. As of Thursday, 75% of San Francisco’s population and 81% of Marin’s population is fully vaccinated.

Marin is the only county in the Bay Area that is close to meeting the criteria for lifting the mask mandate. “We want to see fewer people hospitalized with COVID-19 before lifting the mandate,” said Dr. Matt Willis, the county’s health director. “Last week, there were 15 total COVID-19 hospitalizations in Marin. So we set that as the metric — we’ll want to see less than 15 people in the hospital for COVID-19 before lifting the mandate.”

While Marin’s move into the yellow tier is promising, it needs to remain at that level for 21 consecutive days. “Three consecutive weeks in yellow will mean we’ve maintained fewer than 18 new cases per day on average,” Willis explained. “That’s among the lowest rates in the state, and California’s rates are the lowest in the nation. We’re in a good place to peel back restrictions. We’ve talked about following the science as we place new restrictions, and the local mask mandate helped control the fourth wave.As we moved out of lockdown in the past, we saw evidence that we can safely lift restrictions when conditions allow. With over 90 percent of our eligible community fully vaccinated, we’ve earned another margin of normalcy. “

LATEST July 16, 6:45 am Operations have resumed at SFO’s international terminal after a “possibly incendiary” was discovered on Friday night. Once San Francisco police finished searching the terminal, people were let back in around midnight.

“The SFPD EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] Unit safely removed several suspicious packages that were in question from the airport making the terminal safe to resume normal operations,” SFPD said in a statement. “Airport employees and passengers are allowed to enter all airport terminals. At this time there is no arrest to mention, which remains an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and start the message with SFPD.”

There are still residual delays at SFO, so be sure to check your flight status if you have a trip planned Saturday.

Jul 15, 11:40pm The international terminal at SFO is still evacuated.

The airport tweeted that vehicles are now allowed to exit international garages, however.

SFPD confirmed the evacuation, saying “at approximately 8:15 pm officers assigned to SFO received a report of a bomb threat. Officers on the scene located a suspicious package and deemed the item possibly incendiary. Out of an abundance of caution the International Terminal of SFO has been evacuated Additional SFPD resources, which include the SFPD EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] Unit is investigating. Officers do have an adult male detained for this incident.”

Airport delays should be expected, police said. AirTrain service is suspended.

Videos on social media showed hundreds of passengers waiting in the area outside the terminal. Many reported getting an emergency alert on their phone about the evacuation.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — The Oakland Education Association on Sunday announced it was planning a one-day teacher strike this Friday over planned permanent school closures and what the group called “unfair labor practices.”

The official Oakland Education Association Twitter account posted information about the strike Sunday afternoon. In addition to pickets outside of Oakland Unified School District schools starting at 6:30 am on Friday, April 29, the post said there would also be an OEA block party at the Lake Amphitheater.

pic.twitter.com/MtyfyJyKnn

“OEA is launching a new contract campaign for safe and racially just community schools for all Oakland students!” the message read. The organization is pushing to garner support as they negotiate their next three-year contract with the district.

For months, the OEA — along with Oakland Unified parents and students — have been protesting planned closures approved by district officials earlier this year.

According to the plan, Brookfield Elementary, Carl B. Munck Elementary, Grass Valley Elementary, Horace Mann Elementary and Korematsu Discovery Academy will close in the 2022-2023 school year, while Hillcrest K-8 would close its middle school grades. Rise Community Elementary and New Highland Academy will merge this year into one school.

READ MORE: Pederson Homers Twice in Giants’ 12-3 Rout of Nationals

Oakland Unified issued a letter in response to the strike announcement later Sunday afternoon. It read in part:

“The purported basis for this potential strike is in protest over the consolidation of district schools. If this is correct, we demand that OEA immediately cease and desist from moving forward with this strike.

There is no legal basis for any concerted activity that would justify a strike or refusal to perform services benefiting District students. OEA is strongly encouraged to consult with its legal counsel before counting any votes, before announcing any results, and especially before taking any actual action. To be clear, any strike, other withholding of unit member services, or other concerted activity that disrupts the education of District students would be unlawful and an unfair labor practice, a violation of the current collective bargaining agreement between the District and OEA, and a
violation of the EERA.

More importantly, the impact on students would be significant. In light of the lost instruction due to the pandemic, OEA and OUSD worked hard together to ensure that in-person instruction was the norm for this school year. Even the threat of again depriving students of instruction, let alone an actual deprivation, especially without legal justification, will only further hurt students.”

You are no longer required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test at most indoor locations in San Francisco and the city of Berkeley beginning Friday.

This includes businesses serving food and drink, such as restaurants and bars, and places where elevated breathing occurs, such as gyms and fitness studios, public health officials said.

Businesses can opt to be more restrictive than local health guidelines and continue to ask for proof of vaccination or a negative test from staff and clients.

The cities are still requiring that you show proof of vaccination or a negative test at large indoor events of 1,000 people or more.

San Francisco was the first city in the nation to require proof of vaccination before entering indoor businesses, and it’s lifting the mandates as cases and hospitalizations go down. The city’s seven-day average was 110 cases per day on March 1, compared with 1,346 cases per day on Jan 1. The city’s seven-day average was 105 new cases per day on March 3, compared to 1,531 new cases per day a month ago.

“With cases and hospitalizations continuing to fall and our high vaccination rate providing a strong defense against the virus, San Francisco is ready to further reduce COVID-19 restrictions and allow individuals to make their own decisions to protect themselves and their loved ones,” Health officer dr Susan Philip said in a statement released on Wednesday. “The proof of vaccination and testing requirements served their purpose in keeping these spaces as safe as possible for staff and patrons. Rolling it back is part of coming out of crisis mode and learning to live with the virus.”

California Unveils ‘CARE Court’ To Help The Unhoused Get Mental Health Care

For the first time, the state would require counties to provide comprehensive treatment to people suffering from debilitating psychosis — and risk sanctions if they don’t, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Los Angeles Times: Newsom Unveils New Homelessness And Mental Health Plan

As California cities struggled to address a homelessness and mental health crisis on their streets, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration on Thursday unveiled a proposal to push more people with severe psychiatric disorders and addiction issues into court-ordered care that includes medication and housing. The proposal, which Newsom is calling the Community Assistance, Recovery and Empowerment Court, is the state’s latest effort to address one of California’s greatest struggles, and a recognition that something more robust is needed to solve the problem. Newsom allocated $12 billion for homelessness in the state budget last year and proposed an additional $2 billion in his January financial blueprint. (Wiley, 3/3)

San Francisco Chronicle: Gavin Newsom’s Bold New Mental Health Plan Was Inspired By The Misery On San Francisco Streets

The misery experienced on San Francisco’s sidewalks has long offered a case study in the failure of California’s mental health care system. Now, the dire situation is inspiring a proposal for a sweeping overhaul. gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan, to be unveiled Thursday, seeks to tackle two big flaws in the system: the shortage of desperately needed care and the strict limitations on compelling treatment for people who are too sick to understand they need help.
Salt Lake Tribune: If Salt Lake County Can’t Agree On Winter Homeless Shelters, State Says It Will Step In

After years of conflict over where to put winter overflow shelters, a new proposal would require Salt Lake County’s cities to work together on finding extra beds for the unsheltered — or risk having the state step in and do it for them. Space shortages have plagued the region’s homeless resource centers in recent years, forcing providers to scramble each winter for stopgap solutions to keep people out of the elements. Now, Rep. Steve Eliason, R-Sandy, is trying to create a more structured process for opening these overflow shelters and compel more cities to contribute to solving a regional problem. (Rodgers, 3/4)

In news about transgender health care —

The Texas Tribune: Parents Of Trans Kids Are Preparing For Child Welfare Investigations

For the last two weeks, a mom in the Austin area has been vacillating between rage and panic. Some days, she’s so fired up she feels like she could take on the entire state of Texas by herself. Other days, she just crawls under her weighted blanket and lets the fear take over. The woman, who asked not to be identified to protect her family, has an 8-year-old transgender daughter. In late February, Gov. Greg Abbott directed the state’s child welfare agency to open child abuse investigations into parents that provide gender-affirming care to their children. This family hasn’t had a visit from Child Protective Services, but they know others who have and they’ve started preparing for the possibility that they could be next. (Klibanoff and Dey, 3/4)

The Washington Post: ‘Safe Folders’ For Transgender Children: What To Know

While there has been a wave of bills in the past two years aiming to curtail trans children’s access to health care and ban them from sports teams consistent with their gender identities, families of trans children across the country have long felt vulnerable to investigation and scrutiny, experts say. In response, many parents who support their trans children have relied on a network of organizations for help, sharing essential practices to protect their loved ones. These include “safety folders” (also referred to as “safe folders”), which some Texas parents urged others to compile in the wake of Abbott’s order. (Branigin, 3/3)

Dallas Morning News: UNT Students Protest Jeff Younger, Conservative Speech On ‘Transgender Child Abuse’

Student protests over a conservative politician who promotes criminalizing sex reassignment surgeries for children escalated to police intervention during a Wednesday night event at the University of North Texas. Videos circulating online show dozens of students banging on desks, shouting and cursing at Jeff Younger, who will be in a May runoff in the Republican primary for Texas House District 63. He was involved in a yearslong custody battle for his child, whose mother says is a transgender girl. (Olivares, 3/3)

AP: Oklahoma House Passes Bill Targeting Transgender Girls

An Oklahoma House panel passed a bill Thursday to prevent transgender girls from playing on female sports teams at Oklahoma schools. The House Rules Committee passed the bill on a 6-2 party-line vote with Republicans in support. The measure now heads to the full house for consideration. Civil rights groups and the gay rights organization Freedom Oklahoma immediately criticized the bill’s passage. (3/3)

The Texas Tribune, ProPublica and NBC News: Firefighter Disciplined After Delayed 911 Response In Texas Winter Storm

The Houston Fire Department reprimanded a firefighter for misconduct after an investigation into a delayed 911 response to a case in which a mother and daughter died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The department opened the investigation in July, following reporting from ProPublica, The Texas Tribune and NBC News, which revealed that first responders initially decided not to enter a Houston family’s home during the massive winter storm that hit Texas in February 2021, a decision that resulted in a couple and their two children being exposed to the lethal gas for an additional three hours. (Trevizo, Churchill and Hixenbaugh, 3/4)

Miami Herald: DeSantis Backs ‘Free Speech’ Protection For Doctors

gov. Ron DeSantis called on legislators Thursday to protect doctors’ ability to express themselves freely without fear of reprisal from the boards that regulate the medical profession. A federation of state medical boards warned doctors in July not to spread misinformation during the pandemic or risk losing their licenses. “You’re not going to have good medicine practice if people are fearful of doing things that the evidence is telling them to do, just because it may conflict with the narrative,” DeSantis said at Florida State University’s Panama City campus.
Detroit Free Press: Report: Food Insecurity Is Ongoing Problem In Michigan

Health care expenses associated with food insecurity amounted to $1.8 billion a year in Michigan. It’s a cost that comes into sharp focus in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Michiganders struggled to put food on the table because of the pandemic’s economic upheaval, highlighting the close relationship among poverty, food insecurity and health. That’s according to a report released Thursday by the Food Security Council, created by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2020 to look into the scope and reasons behind food insecurity in the state. The advisory group submitted its findings and recommendations to the governor last month. (Rahman, 3/3)

Maine marijuana regulators are backing off a proposal to change the state’s medical marijuana rules after disapproval from the industry. The rules included product tracking and other new security requirements. Members of the industry slammed the proposal as an overreach that would likely result in higher costs for consumers.
AP: Maine Makes A Dent In State’s Nurse Shortage

A report commissioned by health groups in Maine found that the state has reduced its projected nursing shortage by more than half. The Maine Nursing Action Coalition and the Maine Hospital Association commissioned the report. The Portland Press Herald reported Wednesday an original projected shortage of 3,200 registered nurses by 2025 is down to 1,450. (3/4)

The director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention got her fill of St. Louis Thursday in a uniquely extensive visit to a city that included speaking to medical students, meeting with the city’s health director, hearing from clinic leaders and touring one of those Clinics in one of the city’s most impoverished areas. “We in the CDC are only as good as our public health partners are in the community, and so as I travel, I really want to see what’s working in public health in the community and what’s not working, and I want to hear and learn ,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, who became director just as COVID-19 vaccines were rolled out over a year ago.
