It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Brodie announce his passing in May of 2021.

Tom was a third-generation San Franciscan. His great-grandfather Thomas Brodie started a San Francisco plumbing and heating company “Brodie’s” in approximately 1890.

Tom married in 1989 and the couple moved to Fremont in 1992 to purchase a home. However, in keeping with the Brodie tradition, Tom’s son was born at UCSF, making grandpa proud that his grandson was a fourth-generation San Franciscan.

Tom graduated Cum Laude from San Francisco State University where he also obtained a technical writing certificate. He worked as a technical writer for Sun Microsystems, Tesla Motors, and Citrix Systems.

Tom’s passion for cars was well-known, and each year he looked forward to the San Francisco Auto Show. He was an early driver when at the age of five he climbed into the parked car of a houseguest who had neglected to engage the emergency brake.

Tom’s passion for cars was rivaled by his love for dogs. His family’s first dog was a St. Bernard (Bobo), a gentle giant. Tom developed character personalities for the family dogs and “spoke” on their behalf, his family often needing to remind themselves that the dogs didn’t truly speak. When their beloved breeder dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind developed a medical issue and the family was mourning her loss, Tom and his wife fostered a puppy from Furry Friends Rescue. When their son met the puppy during a college break, the two quickly bonded and Sonic became a permanent part of the pack.

Tom will be remembered for his humor, compassion, generosity, and love for his family.

Tom is survived by his wife, Terrie Brodie; his son Jonathan Brodie; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Tricia Brodie and Doug and Elizabeth Brodie; his brothers-in-law, Steve Bialostok and Joe Lozoya, as well as nephews, a niece, and cousins.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, if anyone is so inclined, donations be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind or Furry Friends Rescue. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date.

FREMONT, CA — A stretch of shoreline in Alameda was ready for summertime visitors after a Fremont teen, Faye Lin, led a cleanup that included more than 50 students and adults. Together, they collected over 350 pounds of trash.

“Their efforts were especially important right now as the endangered least terns are back in the area. They, along with many other sea birds, are at high risk from consuming plastics or becoming entangled in debris,” according to Ms. Liz Taylor, president of Deep Ocean Explore Research (DOER) Marine.

The group gathered on April 23. At the time, Lin was completing her junior year at Mission San Jose High School, but she reached beyond her immediate circle of friends to gather students from eight schools: Decoto School of Independent Study, James Logan High, J.F. Kennedy High, Washington High School, Mission San Jose High, Quarry Lane High School, Robertson High, Thomas Russell Middle School, and William Hopkins Junior High School.

May Guo told Patch that the conservation effort was moving, “It was inspiring to see so many different school students come together for a shared cause.”

A second cleanup is planned for Saturday. Both students and adults are invited to participate. You must register in advance. Read about details of the cleanup, and then sign up.

Lin has long been inspired by the ocean, becoming an open water scuba diver in Monterey Bay at just 12. Since then, she has conducted two award-winning science projects that focused on California giant kelp and sea star wasting disease. She is so passionate about the ocean that she started a chapter of a non-profit organization called AquaMeridian US earlier this year.

According to Gao, Lin’s goal is “to educate and inspire her peers about ocean conservation and how to take action to make a positive impact on the global community.”

Lin was a 2022 Regeneron International Science Fair finalist and two special awards winner.

Fremont, like other large cities, has plenty of options for hiring movers, but with so many moving companies to choose from, the decision isn’t always easy. The San Francisco suburb has plenty of moving companies in the area, but which one is right for you? Luckily, we’ve done all the hard work and compiled a list of the best movers in Fremont. Our top pick: Upline Moving, which offers full-service moving for even your most precious and unwieldy cargo (we’re looking at you, baby grand). Already sold? Then get a quote from Upline here.

Ninja Movers, Inc. – 4.55

All Star Movers & Storage – 4.55

Before you head out in search of a mover, we’ve got a few simple tips that will help you get the best service and price.

Be sure to get quotes from at least three different moving companies. Prices may vary from mover to mover, but the process of asking for estimates will give you a good sense of how to budget.

Not all movers are created equal. Browse each company’s website for services, pricing, and licensure details.

Ask each mover for details on additional fees that may arise during the move, such as obtaining parking permits, extended carry fees, or even cancellation fees. Don’t forget about costs associated with setting up your new home — deposits, utility set-ups, new furniture, and any necessary repairs or improvements you may need to make. Keep in mind that the cost of living in Fremont is higher than the national average, so these expenses may be greater than in other parts of the country.

Compare the top moving companies in Fremont, CA

*Labor only moves typically do not include a truck. The moving crew typically comes with blankets, straps, dollies, and any other equipment needed for the move.

**Storage may be provided at a company-owned facility, or the company may store items at a local self-storage facility.

FAQs

How much do Fremont movers cost?

In Fremont, local moves for studio or one-bedroom apartments typically cost $200–$500 if done by the owner or $600-$1,000 if a moving service is used. Moving a larger home, or moving a long distance, can cost several thousand dollars.

Actual costs could vary. To get the most accurate estimate, you’ll want to compare quotes from several moving companies and consider how much help you need: Do you need packing as well as moving help? Do you want the movers to provide moving supplies such as boxes, tape, and paper for wrapping delicate items? Will you need to store your belongings for any period of time?

Also, consider the costs of setting up your new home, such as deposits, utility set-up fees, new furniture or appliances, and any necessary repairs or improvements. The cost of living in Fremont is generally higher than the national average, so your ongoing expenses may also be higher than in other locations.

How do I get an estimate from a Fremont-based moving company?

You can request a free estimate by contacting one of the above companies for a quote. This process will likely involve providing a detailed list of your belongings online or in person to see how labor-intensive the job will be. The more you can tell the moving company about your move, the more reliable your quote will be.

You can also request quotes from multiple moving companies here:

Do Fremont moving companies offer insurance for damaged or lost items during the move?

Movers are legally required to have basic liability coverage. For added peace of mind (and an extra fee), you can also opt for Full Value Protection, which offers more coverage for replacing misplaced or damaged items.

How do heavy traffic or parking restrictions in Fremont affect the moving process?

Both heavy traffic and parking restrictions can completely derail the moving process; luckily, the pros know what they’re doing. Moving companies typically obtain parking permits and plan moves to avoid rush hour. Speak with your movers about any restricted parking, permits, overhead obstructions, or street sweepers that may impact the move.

Does Fremont have any moving restrictions?

Fremont does not have any moving restrictions. If you’re moving into an apartment or a condo, or into a development that’s governed by a homeowners association, you’ll want to check whether it has any rules for moving in and out. Some buildings, for example, only allow you to move in on weekdays.

What are the peak moving times in Fremont, and how can they impact the cost of my move?

The most expensive times to move to Fremont are May through September, especially on weekends and at the end of the month. To save money (and have the most options), plan your move outside of these peak periods.

Are there moving companies in Fremont that have eco-friendly practices?

Many Fremont moving companies may use eco-friendly practices like reusable containers, green packing materials, and eco-friendly fuels. To learn more, visit each moving company’s website or check with them directly to learn more about their sustainability efforts.

Methodology

We reviewed hundreds of moving companies, gathering data for each company that is most important for customers. This includes quantitative comparisons of things like the number of years in business, Yelp ratings, Better Business Bureau ratings, and proper state licensing. We also review qualitative data points, such as whether a moving company responds to (and works to resolve) negative reviews and the variety of moving services offered.

We gather all of these data points into a rigorous 100-point scoring system that breaks down into the following categories:

Industry reputation (30%): Is this company well regarded in the industry, as seen through their Better Business Bureau listing and rating? Is the company properly licensed and are company members active within their industry, either online or at industry conferences?

Online reputation (25%): Does the company maintain a professional website with accurate information? Can you find this company through Google search? Are they listed on Yelp with recent customer reviews?

Customer satisfaction (35%): We review online reviews, company responses to reviews, and efforts by the company to resolve customer complaints.

Service options (10%): We look at the breadth of service options offered by a company. This includes both moving services (including storage, full packing, specialty item handling, and delivery options), as well as customer support and payment options.

For homeowners needing chimney cleaning in Redwood City and Fremont, California, Mister-Chimney & Nova Fireplaces is the right company to count on.

This press release was originally distributed by ReleaseWire

Belmont, CA — (ReleaseWire) — 07/19/2022 — For those owning a fireplace and using a chimney, chimney cleaning is an essential requirement. Periodic cleaning can put households at risk, increasing the chances of fire hazards and other dangers. While DIY chimney cleaning is always an option, it can be risky for homeowners to take matters into their own hands.

Hiring a professional service for chimney cleaning in Redwood City and Fremont, California can save clients the hassles of self-service. Mister-Chimney & Nova Fireplaces is a leading chimney sweep company with the right experience and credentials. Certified and licensed, they can provide quality chimney cleaning that is second to none.

Routine chimney cleaning helps keep the unit clean from grime and the buildup of flammable material that can lead to a catastrophic house fire. When the fireplace is active, it produces soot and creosote, slowly deteriorating chimney walls and liners, ultimately causing them to fall into the flue. Over time, creosote can build up, causing unpleasant odors and reducing the effectiveness of the heat. Regular cleaning not only helps preserve the structural integrity of the chimney but also prevents carbon monoxide buildup and other potentially harmful flue gases from reaching the home’s living space.

The experienced staff at Mister-Chimney & Nova Fireplaces will prepare the space by laying down drop cloths and covering the area around the fireplace. They will use specialized equipment ranging from roads and brushes to a high-powered vacuum to remove creosote deposits and find any obstacles thoroughly.

If they spot any issue, they immediately bring it to the attention of their clients, providing recommendations on how it can be best addressed. Before leaving the site, they ensure that all remaining residue and soot are appropriately cleaned. The services by Mister Chimney are geared toward the safety and cleaning of any negative effects of the activities on their property, resulting in healthier buildings.

Move over Disneyland. It’s actually Fremont that ranks as the happiest place — if not on the entire earth, then at least in the United States.

The Alameda County city came in at No. 1 in a new report ranking Happiest Cities in America in 2022. The report, conducted annually by the personal finance website WalletHub, compared 182 of the largest US cities in 30 “key indicators of happiness,” including instances of depression, average income growth and leisure time spent per day.

“Location plays a hand in how bright or gloomy our days are,” according to the study. “For years, researchers have studied the science of happiness and found that its key ingredients include a positive mental state, healthy body, strong social connections, job satisfaction and financial well-being. However, money can only make you so happy — people who make $75,000 a year won’t get any higher satisfaction from more money. Also consider the fact that while the US is one of the richest countries, it ranks only 14th on the World Happiness Report.”

The Bay Area was overall well represented, holding down three of top five spots on the list. Joining in Fremont in the upper echelon were San Francisco and San Jose, which placed at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. (No. 2 is Columbia, Maryland.)

Other Bay Area/NorCal cities to make the list included:

14) Santa Rosa

16) Oaklands

49) Sacramento

101) Modesto

122) Stockton

Fremont excelled in a number of individual happiness indicators, coming in at No. 2 (just behind Pearl City, Hawaii) for lowest depression rate; No. 4 for highest sports participation rate; and no. 1 for lowest separation/divorce rate.

Not surprisingly, the study remarked about how difficult the last two years have been for people and their pursuit of happiness.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a third of Americans to be so stressed that they sometimes find it hard to make basic decisions,” according to the study. “Therefore, it’s vital for people to boost their happiness however they can, whether through family, friends, activities, entertainment or work. What people might not realize is that where they live may also determine how happy they are.”

While the Bay Area dominated the top 5 happiest cities list, the Golden State did not come in at No. 1 on WalletHub’s list of happiest states. Instead, California placed at No. 4 — which is still pretty happy, right? — just behind (in order) Utah, Minnesota and Hawaii.

“In this study, WalletHub drew upon the findings of ‘happiness’ research to determine which environmental factors are linked to a person’s overall well-being and satisfaction with life,” according to the study on Happiest States in America. “Previous studies have found that good economic, emotional, physical and social health are all key to a well-balanced and fulfilled life.

“To determine where Americans exhibit the best combination of these factors, we examined the 50 states across 31 key metrics, ranging from the depression rate and the positive COVID-19 testing rate to income growth and the unemployment rate.”

FREMONT (CBS SF) – Police are still looking for a run over driver who killed an elderly Livermore man on June 30, leaving his family heartbroken.

The victim’s only child, Howard Sham, 24, said he was struggling with a great loss and an enormous financial burden. He asks the driver to report.

CONTINUE READING: VIDEO: Shoplifter fills backpack with stolen goods while walking through San Francisco Walgreens

Allen Sham was a 69-year-old father and husband who died a week after being hit by a car on Peralta Avenue near Dusterberry Way before 10:30 p.m.

Police need public help to locate the suspect’s dark limousine, which can be seen in a surveillance photo. The front bumper, hood, or windshield area can be moderately damaged.

“I think I’m more angry than sad because someone just hit you and ran, you know?” Said Shame. “What kind of person does that … that’s my question, what if it were your father?”

Howard Sham lives in San Diego, where he takes a year off to work while studying. He says that before his father lost his job years ago, he was a craftsman and mechanic.

CONTINUE READING: Scientists try to save wandering western monarch butterflies as a mystery unfolds

“He was hardworking,” said Sham. “I mean, even when he was out of work, he was still trying to find ways to make money and help. I just know that he did his best. “

At the time of the crash, Sham was pushing a cart full of recyclables and personal items, according to Fremont Police. After the collision, the car stopped briefly, but the driver did not try to look at Sham after hitting him from behind.

Sham said his father may have been collecting cans for cash.

Sham’s mother suffered a stroke at the beginning of the pandemic and is now in a nursing home. He started a GoFundMe page to pay for his father’s funeral and to pay his mother’s medical bills.

While police are still looking for clues to the investigation, a Fremont resident said it is not uncommon to see accidents on this stretch of road.

FREMONT (KPIX 5) – After last year’s pandemic hiatus, organizers of upcoming festivals in Fremont and San Jose are preparing in light of mounting concerns about the Delta variant.

Last year the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest went virtual and the Fremont Festival of the Arts was completely canceled. This year they’re coming back, but with a few changes.

CONTINUE READING: Man shot dead after battle on Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco; Suspect at large

One of the largest outdoor festivals west of the Mississippi, the Fremont Festival of the Arts relies heavily on all kinds of vendors to attract nearly half a million people over two days.

In previous years, vendors had everything from jewelry to clothing to food, but this year the festival is struggling to get them.

“The events industry has been hit very, very hard, so a lot of people have either taken other jobs or taken the opportunity to retire,” said Cindy Bonior of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce who runs the festival.

SkyDrone 5 on the Fremont Festival of the Arts 2019. (SkyDrone 5 / CBS)

“The sad thing is that unfortunately we won’t have margaritas this year because the seller is no longer in business,” Bonior told KPIX 5.

Despite the fact that there will be fewer vendors, organizers say the festival will be self-expanding, with more space between the stands for social distancing.

“I think that people at our festival feel safe,” says Bonior.

CONTINUE READING: Man hit by car in East San Jose in possible incident of domestic violence; Woman arrested

The San Jose Jazz Summer Fest is also changing its presence.

“We have emphasized our outdoor program, so this year we have a little less indoor stage offers,” says Brendan Rawson, the director of the jazz festival.

In addition to moving the indoor stages outdoors to allow for greater social distance, fans might also notice fewer acts present. Live performers are especially in demand as venues across the country relax pandemic restrictions.

“That part of the list of all artists was particularly challenging for us,” said Rawson.

Festival organizers said they are working with local health officials as COVID cases in the Bay Area are on the rise due to the Delta variant.

Organizers said they hope the outdoor events will allow them to continue as planned while it is safe.

MORE NEWS: Berkeley police find missing 15-year-old girl and arrest 25-year-old man

The San Jose Jazz Summer Fest takes place August 13-15, while the Fremont Festival of the Arts is scheduled for the last weekend in September.
