The owners of the popular Delfina restaurant in San Francisco have temporarily suspended seating while they begin work on a huge project that will merge their business with their other restaurant, Pizzeria Delfina next door.

On Monday, owners Craig and Annie Stoll announced this on Instagram, where they said the Delfina restaurant is temporarily suspending field service in its parklet and will only operate for take-out and delivery until March 2022.

“While the parklet is hibernating, there will be no rest for us because we are facing a major renovation!” Read the article in part. “Here is the plan; We’re combining @pizzeriadelfina and @delfinarestaurant in one room, adding a bar and updating our look. “

Craig and Annie had taken a close look at Delfina Restaurant during the pandemic and realized that after 23 years in business, it was time for a renovation.

“Those are dog years when it comes to restaurants,” said Craig. “We opened in 1998 in this tiny little room that now consists almost entirely of a kitchen, and we got the room next door a year and a half later. It was really nice then, but restaurants are tough.”

Once the renovation is complete, the shop will reopen as Delfina Restaurant and have a “developed” menu but retain many of its classic dishes. There will also be pizza on the menu and a takeaway and delivery menu, largely in line with what Pizzeria Delfina has to offer. SFist reported that the liquor license from the former Stolls restaurant Locanda, which closed amid the pandemic, has been transferred to Delfina Restaurant, meaning cocktails will also be available after it reopens.

Craig and Annie Stoll opened Delfina Restaurant on 18th Street in the Mission District of San Francisco in 1998. The couple plan to merge Delfina and the Pizzeria Delfina next door into one.

A big reason for the merger, said Craig, has to do with the challenges of running two restaurants side by side. He added that there are too many managers on the team and it makes more sense to run the business with “fewer people”.

“We just have to streamline,” he said.

In March 2020, Annie Stoll told SFGATE that she and her husband made the difficult decision to temporarily close the Delfina Restaurant and Locanda when indoor dining screeched to a halt as an emergency response to the coronavirus pandemic. During this time, the couple kept their pizzeria Delfina going only for take-away.

At the time, the Stolls said they had about 300 employees at the Delfina Restaurant, Locanda, and Pizzeria Delfina locations across the Bay Area, but that they had to lay off about 90% of their employees. Eventually the Delfina restaurant reopened but Locanda was not so lucky and closed after almost 10 years.

Fast forward to the present, Craig is excited about the makeover and believes the update will help provide a better customer experience.

“Delfina was always meant to be a neighborhood restaurant, and the pizzeria did that, but it was tiny,” he said. “[The remodeled Delfina] becomes more manageable and accessible for our guests. “

Kaiseki Saryo Hachi, one of the Bay Area’s rare kaiseki restaurants, is set to move from its current home in a mall in Burlingame to a new eatery in Saratoga next year.

Husband and wife Shinichi Aoki and Yuko Nammo have taken over a tiny room in 14417 Big Basin Way, where they plan to move their gourmet restaurant in July. They’re building an intimate space with no more than eight counter seats and a couple of tables for more direct interaction between customers and Aoki, the former chef at San Francisco’s Michelin-starred Hashiri. He will continue to serve an ever-changing selection of sophisticated dishes using both Japanese and local produce, from tender baby abalone to poached tomatoes with blanched English peas.

The Chronicle’s restaurant critic, Soleil Ho, called Kaiseki Saryo Hachi a true hidden gem with Michelin-starred culinary art: “Imagine going into a neighborhood café and finding Alain Ducasse cooking behind the counter.”

Kaiseki is a multi-course Japanese menu that highlights seasonality and different cooking techniques, from steaming to grilling. Reservations for Kaiseki Saryo Hachi’s one-night seating are selling out fast.

Nammo said they felt a bit limited in the burlingame room, which was originally their ramen restaurant and is not meant to function entirely as a kaiseki spot. They switched to making kaiseki when Aoki lost his job during the pandemic. The couple have always wanted to design their dream kaiseki restaurant but were “so used to being turned down by landlords looking for tenants with deeper pockets before the coronavirus,” Nammo said. You stumbled upon the new room on a recent trip to Saratoga; The landlord happened to be there when they passed and was ready to pick them up in the face of retail vacancies forced by a pandemic, Nammo said. Before purchasing the new premises, the couple had spent time in Saratoga and visited Hakone Gardens in Japan. Nammo also made Japanese macarons there for tea ceremonies.

The couple plan to decorate the new space with local wood, as well as Japanese ceramics and antiques they have collected over the years. Saratoga restaurant will have a new name, likely Aoki, but the couple have not yet made up their minds.

Kaiseki Saryo Hachi will continue in his current space until they can open in Saratoga. They treat it as a kind of pop-up, experimenting with different dishes to see what goes down with customers and what they should bring to the new place. Last week they served an entire menu dedicated to the specialty of premium Japanese prawns.

South San Francisco restaurants that want to continue to dine al fresco will need to obtain a $ 500 permit after the pilot expires on Dec. 31 to retain their parklet or sidewalk extension, the city council decided.

In response to the pandemic, the South San Francisco City Council approved an outdoor pilot program in July 2020. Eleven downtown restaurants and another 10 to 12 privately owned restaurants participated in the program.

The most common feedback from companies was that outdoor dining was critical to keeping business alive during and after the height of the pandemic. The most common challenge was that wind and weather largely determine the success of outdoor dining in any given week, said senior planner Christopher Espiritu.

The al fresco dining program participants were also reluctant to remove the rooms in case there was another shutdown amid the variant of the coronavirus, he said.

“I think there needs to be some flexibility here because obviously I don’t want to put additional pressure, financial pressure on companies that think this is a great option but can’t take advantage of it because it’s too expensive for them. “Said Vice Mayor Mark Nagales.

Councilor James Coleman agreed and suggested finding a possible middle ground to put it up and take that seat off the street.

“I share my concern with colleagues that I don’t want the cost of a permit to scare off restaurants that would otherwise be willing to dine al fresco,” said Coleman.

Other reasons besides the price of the permit are that there are enough staff available to maintain the outdoor area. The applicant would have to make adjustments to their parklet to meet new standards and measure the cost of collecting revenue.

“The reopening of the state and economy on June 15 changed the operational landscape for restaurants,” said Espiritu. “More specifically, business operating costs have increased tremendously, especially food prices. There are staff shortages and other factors such as: B. the need to balance the needs for the majority pick-up and drop-off business and an open indoor and outdoor dining area with fewer administrative staff. “

Since reopening on June 15, the use of these outdoor dining areas has declined significantly, and staff recommend removing unused spaces by the end of the pilot, if not sooner.

SAN FRANCISCO – Greg Ryken showed up at his favorite meal in San Francisco on Friday with appetite and vaccination certificate in hand.

A manager at Sam’s Grill and Seafood Restaurant confirmed he was fully vaccinated against COVID-19, put him on a list of customers who have met the city’s new requirements for future reference, and led him to his table.

“Easy,” said Ryken when San Francisco became the first major city in the United States to enforce the strictest vaccination mandate for entering restaurants, bars, gyms, and large concerts.

Companies put up signs and hired additional staff to start checking people’s vaccinations and ID cards before they were admitted. Many fitness studios had already checked the vaccination status of their members before the health ordinance came into force.

“We tested the existing systems to see how we would do it, we talked to our customers, prepared our staff and we are very pleased to have the full support of the leadership of our city so that we can confidently step into this new landscape together, ”said Tracey Sylvester, owner of a Pilates studio in the Mission district.

Pete Sittnick, a managing partner of Waterbar and EPIC Steak restaurants on the city’s waterfront, said he was concerned about slow check-ins, guest resistance to the request, or people showing up without proper documentation. Until now, he said, the crowd had come with vaccination cards in hand and the queue at the door was short.

“The good thing is that if someone doesn’t have their vaccination certificate, they can still eat outside. There is an option and we just have to be prepared for different scenarios, ”he said.

Mayor London Breed announced the request more than a week ago to contain the rising COVID-19 cases and said she was concerned that the highly contagious Delta variant could disrupt the city’s economic recovery. She also hopes it will encourage vaccine holdouts to join the 79% of the population who got their vaccinations.

“This is not a penalty,” said Breed on Friday. “It’s really about a chance to move in the right direction and keep people safe.”

The mandate goes further than New York City, which requires at least partial vaccination for a variety of high-risk indoor activities, and New Orleans, which requires proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test for eating or drinking indoors. All three cities make exceptions for people who do not qualify for the vaccine, including children under the age of 12.

It follows a string of tough security measures that San Francisco has put in place since the pandemic began. The city and its neighboring Bay Area counties were the first in the US to issue a home stay order and were the first major city in the country to require all city employees to be vaccinated without the option of regular testing perform. .

This week the city sent letters telling 20 police, fire and sheriff departments who refused to revise their vaccination status by the deadline of Jan.

Governor Gavin Newsom also tightened the rules after announcing the reopening of California’s economy in June. He required health care workers to get vaccinated to keep their jobs and all teachers and government employees to either vaccinate or have weekly tests.

Local business groups have endorsed the new vaccination mandate, stating that it protects the health of their employees and customers and prevents them from limiting indoor capacity. Some companies that made it their business to look at the door for proof of vaccination said a citywide policy will help set clear expectations for all customers.

Jody McCord said the mandate forced her to cancel plans to meet Wisconsin relatives at her favorite restaurants because not everyone in her group is fully vaccinated. They had to take their reunion across San Francisco Bay to a restaurant in Sausalito.

“It puts people between a rock and a tough place,” said McCord.

Online ordering and reservation systems such as OpenTable help companies by giving customers early warning of the mandate. The city’s hospitality industry has launched a “Relax, We’re Getting Annoyed” campaign to bring this to the attention of travelers.

City officials said a paper card issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a photo of the CDC card, or a digital vaccine ID would be sufficient. Vaccination certificates from foreign governments are also permitted.

Pearce Cleaveland, co-owner of Temple nightclub, said his security guards had been trained to check all kinds of vaccination records and they had caught some people with fake vaccination cards.

“We’ve had people upset at the door when they’ve been turned away, but generally they understand,” he said.

Workers have until October 13 to demonstrate that they are fully vaccinated, and Cleaveland said he expects to comply by then.

After a sharp spike in coronavirus cases and hospital stays in the Bay Area over the summer, numbers appear to be flattening out but remain high, said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert at the University of California, San Francisco.

He said the reintroduced restrictions had helped slow the spread.

“There is no such thing as a magic ball, just a combination of a hard stick and a soft stick,” he said. “The vaccination card is a soft stick because you can still eat outside, but if you want to hang out with people inside, you’d better get vaccinated.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Indoor restaurants, cinemas and gyms in San Francisco can reopen within 24 hours, an upbeat Mayor of London Breed announced on Tuesday as the county officially moved to a less restrictive tier as the rate of Coronavirus cases, hospital admissions, and deaths are falling nationwide in California.

San Francisco and Santa Clara counties in the Bay Area are joining five other counties to move to the second most restrictive level of operations. Much of the state’s population remains in the most restrictive purple class, including the Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties.

California reported an additional 2,533 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number of known cases in the state to nearly 3.5 million. Officials also announced an additional 303 deaths, bringing the total to just under 52,500 deaths in the state, which is nearly 40 million.

“This is the beginning of a new day in San Francisco,” said Breed of Pier 39, a popular tourist area in picturesque Fisherman’s Wharf.

However, she warned residents to wear masks and maintain proper social distance, even when encouraging them to explore the city.

“When your waiter comes to your table, put on your mask. When you go to the bathroom, put your mask on, ”she said.

Several counties in the San Francisco Bay Area issued strict home stays almost a year ago before a statewide shutdown. Public health officials have largely been more cautious about reopening the economy than their counterparts in Southern California and other states.

Operations in San Francisco shut down in early December after several Bay Area counties were preemptively locked when the positivity rate rose and the case rate rose. Outdoor dining, outdoor museums, and some indoor and outdoor personal services reopened in late January after the state canceled its regional stay-at-home arrangement, but the economic toll has been grim.

Housing and commercial rents plummeted as technicians who could work from anywhere did just that and fled to other parts of the state and county that were cheaper and more flexible. Downtown restaurants that once fed crowds of hungry office workers and tourists for lunch have struggled.

Tourism is also struggling, as airline ticket purchases to San Francisco in late October and November fell 80% year-over-year – much worse than the US average – the city’s financial analysts said in a January report.

Residents’ cautious behavior may have further contributed to the economic downturn, financial analysts said, with data showing that San Francisco residents stayed more at home than residents of other California cities and even other Bay Area counties.

San Francisco’s famous cable cars have been out of service for a year and there is no schedule as to when they could return. The mayor said on social media Tuesday that they will be returning this year.

“Cable cars are part of the fabric of San Francisco. They attract tourists, they help our economy, and I’m not going to make them go away,” she said.

San Francisco, a city and county of about 900,000 pre-pandemic residents, has one of the lowest fall and death rates in the country. 34,000 new cases of the coronavirus and 422 deaths were reported on Tuesday.

Most of California’s 58 counties remain in the state’s most restricted tier. In addition to San Francisco and Santa Clara, the counties of El Dorado, Lassen, Modoc, Napa and San Luis Obispo also moved up one place, The Sacramento Bee reported on Tuesday.

For counties in the red row, indoor restaurants and cinemas may reopen with a capacity of 25% or up to 100 people, whichever is less. Fitness studios as well as dance and yoga studios can be opened with a capacity of 10%. Museums, zoos and aquariums can open indoor activities with a capacity of 25%.

Wineries can open outdoors with changes, but bars and distilleries that do not serve food may not. Other retail businesses such as clothing stores and florists can increase their capacity from 25% to 50%.

After the recent mask mandate, rumors began to circulate about whether or not San Francisco will introduce a vaccine mandate for indoor eating. Well, guests, it’s happening: At a press conference Thursday morning outside the only Vesuvio Cafe in North Beach, officials announced that San Francisco will require proof of vaccination for indoor dining as of Aug. 20. So when do you want to eat? At a restaurant or a drink in a San Francisco bar, you better get ready to proudly show your vaccination card.

“We know that in order for our city to recover and thrive from the pandemic, we need to use the best method of fighting COVID-19 and that is vaccines,” Mayor London Breed said in a statement. “Many companies in San Francisco are already pioneering the need to provide proof of vaccination for their customers because they care about the health of their employees, their customers, and this city. This mandate builds on their leadership role and will help us meet the challenges ahead and keep our business open. Vaccines are our way out of the pandemic and our way back to a life in which we can be safe together. ”

San Francisco is the second city in the country to have a vaccination mandate after New York City, and is the first and only city and county in the Bay Area to do so. That announcement comes only from the SF Department of Public Health, not the broader Bay Area coalition that has worked together in the past. The mandate applies not only to restaurants and bars, but also to fitness studios, clubs, theaters and other indoor event spaces.

Specifically, guests must provide proof of vaccination with a physical vaccination card, photo of their vaccination card, or QR code obtained through the government website, and restaurants and bars must verify this with photo ID. Both doses of the vaccine are required (unlike New York, where only a first dose is required). Negative COVID tests will not be accepted. The mandate does not apply to children under the age of 12 who are not yet eligible to receive the vaccine, and does not apply to those who collect takeaway orders. And while guests are required to provide proof of vaccination from August 20th, restaurants and bars have to confirm the vaccination status of their employees by October 13th.

“At this stage of the pandemic, we need to optimize the vaccines’ powerful tool to protect ourselves while we fully reopen our stores,” said Dr. Grant Colfax from the SF Department of Health in a statement. “The past few weeks have shown the importance of having all beneficiaries vaccinated when we resume normal activities.”

New York became the first city in the United States to announce a mandate to vaccinate indoor food from August 16, hands. The SF Bar Owner Alliance has issued a statement recommending that bars be screened for evidence of vaccinations from July 29th, and a growing number of restaurants and bars have volunteered to do so. But this mandate makes it official: now all restaurants and bars have to double-card.

It’s a direct response to the highly contagious Delta variant that continues to surge in the Bay Area. San Francisco is currently reporting 247 new COVID cases per day on a seven-day average, back to the levels we saw during the vacation spike, which then resulted in a full lockdown. The good news is that 85 percent of San Francisco residents ages 12 and over have had at least one vaccination. Health officials continue to urge everyone to get vaccinated as the unvaccinated are at greatest risk of hospitalization and death, and to require masks indoors because, although rare, even vaccinated people can still get and spread the disease.

Restaurant and bar owners have mixed feelings about switching to a vaccine mandate for indoor dining. The current mask mandate is easy to check at a glance, but “A vaccination mandate would be the next level,” Pearl 6101’s Marialisa Lopez told Eater SF a few weeks ago. “That would be a lot more complicated to enforce.” According to a survey by the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, 66 percent of restaurant owners said they would support an indoor mask mandate. • An alliance of more than 500 bars in San Francisco is considering a big move to require proof of vaccination for entry, reports SFGate. Ben Bleiman, the leader of the San Francisco Bar Owner Alliance, said Tuesday the group could soon release a statement recommending that bars only allow vaccinated customers, although bar participation would ultimately be voluntary (while it’s unclear how many would attend, says Bleiman that he saw it) wave of bars expressing their support only in the past 24 hours).
