SAN FRANCISCO, July 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Gradient, a company built by thermal scientists to rethink HVAC and build products that are good for the planet and great at cooling and heating homes, is announcing the development of its first product, a replacement for the window AC. Gradient will replace the conventional home window AC with a more efficient, space-saving, better-designed solution that keeps homes cool with advanced heat pump technology and a climate-friendly refrigerant. Customers are invited to sign up now for the exclusive beta program at Gradientcomfort.com.

Air conditioning is essential to quality of life and work productivity, but the basic design of window air conditioners has not changed in 50 years. Too often, the very same air conditioning that makes life tolerable in hot weather is also contributing to making climate change worse; heating and cooling systems are responsible for 20% of global carbon emissions.

“Gradient has a mission to cool the world by transforming every home to be more comfortable and healthy for the people who inhabit it — without compromising the environment. We believe we can build a better home air conditioning solution while fighting climate change,” said Vince Romanin, CEO of Gradient. “Air conditioning is one of the most essential amenities to keep people comfortable and productive in a warming world, but too many people are struggling with antiquated window AC units that are clunky, noisy, heavy, and inefficient. Gradient offers a beautiful, intuitive design, a more efficient, sleek, quiet air conditioning experience, and climate-friendly refrigerants. Building a better air conditioner is one of the most effective ways to help people stay comfortable at home while helping to slash carbon emissions from HVAC systems.”

The Gradient is designed to be easy to install and does not block the view like a traditional window AC unit. It provides the benefits of a professional-grade heat pump system at a fraction of the cost. It can provide cooling and heating year-round and is easy to use via mobile app.

Gradient was founded in 2017 and has raised over $13MM in venture funding; investors include Ajax Strategies, At One Ventures, Prime Coalition, Incite Ventures, Autodesk Foundation, Urban Us, Magic Hour, and leading Silicon Valley angels. The company has also received over $9MM in government grants from the U.S. Department of Energy, California Energy Commission, and California Strategic Growth Council.

“Home air conditioning is an underrated aspect of the overall conversation around climate change, and we see a big opportunity for Gradient to disrupt the home HVAC space by developing a much-improved, climate-friendly replacement for the traditional window unit AC,” said Milo Werner, Partner with Ajax Strategies. “Millions of Americans need an air conditioning solution, but their options are limited to out-of-date window and floor units that block their view, make a lot of noise, and contribute to climate change. The current technology has not improved in decades. As more people work from home, there is a higher level of consumer interest in getting a high-quality home air conditioner that really works. Gradient has a great product and an excellent team who are thinking creatively about addressing the needs of this market with a beautiful, intuitive, consumer-focused solution.”

Gradient spun out from Otherlab, a private R&D lab in San Francisco that has leveraged over $40MM in government grants to incubate hard tech companies in the manufacturing, energy, and robotics industries.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – Following consumer trends has many faces. What people buy is a possibility, but they also have questions and advice that they are looking for.

JustAnswer of San Francisco asks over three million questions annually from consumers who have problems and need expert help. CEO Andy Kurtzig says that over the years it has given them what is on the rise and what is losing strength.

Weddings, for example, are definitely making a comeback after COVID caused some couples to hold back. Wedding questions are up 30 percent.

RELATED: Couple Marries on US-Canada Border Due to COVID Restrictions

Is politeness making a comeback? Questions about etiquette are up 65 percent.

“It’s because people are like, ‘Hey, should I or not I invite this person to my party?’ ‘Should I get her vaccinated or not?’ “Should I ask you if you have a negative COVID test or not?” Sensitive topics about which you don’t really know how to ask politely, “says Kurtzig.

Inquiries about sanitary facilities have increased by 33 percent.

VIDEO: ‘Pandemiquette’: How to survive in a world with difficult social situations caused by coronavirus

“People are stuck at home. You don’t want a stranger to come into your house, ”remarked Kurtzig. “You can do a lot of these things yourself, you know. You don’t have to pay the $ 300 or $ 500 for the plumber to come to your house.”
ABC7 News reporter David Louie noted a sharp drop in interest in watch repairs. What’s behind it?

“Everyone has COVID time, right? Nobody, nobody has to watch the clock that much this year,” said Kurtzig.

RELATED: TV That You Can Taste, Invented by a Japanese Professor

Gaming is still big, but with no new systems coming this year, this is an area that is losing steam. 32 percent less.

Advice on firearms fell by 39 percent.

Other Interesting Trends – Consumers want answers about reptilian behavior and dream interpretations, but interest in boats is losing momentum by 16 percent. Maybe that’s because people are more interested in RVs as an alternative to expensive living and working in the office. RV questions are up 27 percent.

DRIVING FACTORS

The growing threat of the spread of COVID-19 in the air can lead to high demand for HVAC systems

In July 2020, the WHO recognized the danger that the coronavirus could spread through the air. This has brought to light the role of traditional heating, ventilation and cooling systems in spreading the virus indoors. The main argument in this regard is that poor ventilation of energy-inefficient air conditioning systems is the main cause of the transmission of the virus. For example, according to a study by the University of Oregon, the virus was present in 25% of HVAC systems in hospitals with COVID-19 patients. Therefore, many experts recommend installing these systems that let in 20% fresh air from the outside. As a result, several building owners and managers are upgrading their ventilation systems with more advanced equipment.

In response to the sudden surge in demand, companies such as Carrier and Honeywell are offering portable filter machines and air monitoring sensors to provide improved ventilation. This is expected to contribute to the global growth of the heating, ventilation and cooling systems (HVAC) market during the forecast period.

REGIONAL INSIGHTS

Asia-Pacific remains dominant; Increase consumer spending capacity to support growth

Of all regions, Asia-Pacific is expected to remain at the top and the highest position in the market in the coming years. This is due to the increasing purchasing power of consumers pushing them to choose advanced global HVAC systems. In addition, growing awareness of indoor pollution and stringent government regulations for urban sustainability will fuel regional growth.

The North American market is expected to experience exponential growth between 2021 and 2028, supported by increasing demand for residential HVAC systems.

Gradient will replace traditional window AC with a more efficient, space-saving and better designed solution that uses advanced heat pump technology and a climate-friendly refrigerant to keep houses cool.

Air conditioning is essential for quality of life and work productivity, but the basic design of window air conditioners has not changed in 50 years. Too often, the same air conditioning system that makes life bearable in hot weather also contributes to exacerbating climate change; Heating and cooling systems are responsible for 20% of global CO2 emissions.

“Gradient’s mission is to cool the world by making every home more comfortable and healthier for the people who live in it – without harming the environment. We believe we can build a better air conditioning solution for the home while fighting climate change, ”said Vince Romanin, CEO of Gradient. “Air conditioning is one of the most important things to add to comfort and productivity in a warming world, but too many people struggle with antiquated window AC units that are clunky, noisy, heavy and inefficient. Gradient offers a beautiful, intuitive design, a more efficient, leaner, quieter air conditioning system and climate-friendly refrigerants. Building a better air conditioner is one of the most effective ways to help people feel comfortable at home while reducing CO2 emissions from HVAC systems. ”

The Gradient is designed to be easy to install and not block the view like a traditional window AC unit. It offers the benefits of a professional heat pump system at a fraction of the cost. It can cool and heat all year round and is easy to use via a mobile app.

Gradient was founded in 2017 and has raised over $ 13 million in venture funding. Investors include Ajax Strategies, At One Ventures, Prime Coalition, Incite Ventures, Autodesk Foundation, Urban us, Magic Hour and Leading Silicon Valley Angels. The company has also received over $ 9 million in government grants from the US Department of Energy, the California Energy Commission, and the California Strategic Growth Council.

“Home air conditioning is an underrated aspect of the general discussion about climate change, and we see a great opportunity for Gradient to disrupt the HVAC space at home by developing a much improved, climate-friendly replacement for the traditional AC window unit,” said Milo Werner, Partnership with Ajax strategies. “Millions of Americans need air conditioning, but their options are limited to outdated window and floor units that block their view, make a lot of noise, and contribute to climate change. Current technology has not improved in decades. ” As more people work from home, consumer interest in a high quality home air conditioner that really works increases. Gradient has a great product and an excellent team that are creatively thinking of meeting the needs of this market with a beautiful, intuitive, consumer-centric solution. ”

Building a better air conditioner is one of the most effective ways to help people feel comfortable at home while reducing CO2 emissions from HVAC systems. “

The story goes on

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia (WAVY) – A couple who paid $ 10,000 to a contractor to install a defective, undersized HVAC system has a payment from the Fund for the recovery of transactions of the contractor.

Joe and Toby Rissin commissioned Antwain Chatman and his company HCEC to install the system in autumn 2018. They say the system never worked properly for the next 10 months, despite Chatman’s frequent visits and assurances.

The Rissins contacted 10 On Your Side and we were able to tell Chatman on camera that he would fix the issues. Then he went a step further and visited the Rissins and told them he would refund their money and remove the faulty equipment. In the end, he didn’t do either, and the couple never heard from Chatman again.

HVAC Contractor Says He Will Give Beach Couple A Refund For Nearly $ 10,000 Beach Couple Sues HVAC Contractors In Court

“I hate to be taken advantage of,” said Joe Rissin Wednesday morning from his home near Virginia Wesleyan University.

The Rissins think Chatman is bold and bold, but not believable.

“I was really surprised that he came here and in front of the camera he admitted he was wrong and then ran away,” said Toby Rissin.

10 On Your Side told them about the state Fund for the recovery of transactions of the contractor in Richmond.

“It takes more than ‘He did a bad job,'” said attorney Brian Miller, who represented the Rissins for their sovereign wealth fund claim. Miller says he can count on one hand the awards he’s received from the fund over the past 30 years.

“[Chatman] obviously taken a job he wasn’t qualified for, but that alone wouldn’t have allowed them to recover, ”Miller said.

In order to reclaim money, the fund needs two key elements: the contractor must have a license and the consumer must provide evidence of fraud. Chatman was licensed for Class A contractors in Virginia.

For the Rissins, the trail of evidence consisted of a combination of text messages Chatman had sent them and a series of investigative stories from 10 On Your Side.

“The video clips that [10 On Your Side was] and the text messages he sent Mr. Rissin making all sorts of false promises, “Miller said was the evidence necessary to support her case.

The Rissins paid a second contractor $ 16,000 for a proper system. They received the maximum of $ 20,000 from the fund but had to pay legal fees and other expenses and received $ 13,200. Not to mention the inconvenience of 10 months of being too cold in winter, too hot in summer, and hours of chasing a contractor and dealing with documents, lawyers, and government regulators.

But Toby Rissin feels “fantastic, I’m so glad someone recommended you. I don’t know what we would have done without it [10 On Your Side] and you recommended a great lawyer. “

At one point, Chatman communicated with WAVY-TV 10 about the Rissins and several other clients who had complained about his work. We tried to contact him on Wednesday afternoon. He didn’t send our message back immediately.

Consumer Reports has no financial relationship with advertisers on this website.

When bone-free temperatures and blizzards occur, people with wood and pellet stoves have an advantage in warming their living spaces. Wood stoves in particular also work when there is a power failure, as they do not need a power source to operate.

There are many other reasons why a wood or pellet stove might respond. They are comfortable, cozy, sustainable and economical, say the owners.

“The pellet stove is our meeting place,” says Brad Anderson, father of four in Mt. Lebanon, Pa. “We sit around and play board games, hang out.” He estimates he’ll save $ 50 to $ 75 a month in heating bills.

“There’s nothing more satisfying,” says Jon Turkel of Clarke County, Virginia of his wood-burning stove. “Sometimes I push the dog out of the way and put myself on the stove.” His savings? About $ 1,500 a year.

If you are thinking of joining the stove owners at the figurative fireplace, there is another incentive: buyers of qualified heating devices that burn wood or wood pellets can now receive a tax credit of 26 percent of all purchase and installation costs thanks to COVID -19 aid package Adopted at the end of December. The loan drops to 22 percent in 2023 and then disappears. (Some states and municipalities offer ongoing discounts.)

Whatever your reason for heating with wood or pellets – economy, convenience, off-grid grain, or a lack of alternatives – getting the most out of a stove requires planning. We’ve reduced the wisdom of wood stoves and pellet stoves to a few smart steps.

Make sure it works in your room

Before feeling warm and fuzzy with the idea of buying a stove, check with your community to see if you can install one. Regulations can restrict or prohibit installations, especially in newly constructed homes. And remember, several states including Arizona, Colorado, and Oregon prohibit the use of wood-burning stoves on named days of high pollution. The EPA, individual states and private organizations make this information available on a daily basis.

The story goes on

Check your interior. For a wood-burning stove, federal safety standards require a minimum of 3 feet from walls or combustible materials. However, many pellet stoves only require 2 inches of clearance from a combustible surface behind and 6 inches from other sides. If you’re using a child safety gate, you’ll need a 3 foot radius around either type of stove.

Consider your needs

As a rule of thumb, you will need around 20 Btu (British thermal units) of heat for every square foot of space. If your stove is your main source of heat and you don’t want to maintain it that often, you’ll need a large wood-burning hearth or pellet stove funnel. The largest wood-burning stoves can burn for 10 to 12 hours, says Sam Halsey, co-owner of Yankee Doodle, an oven dealer in Wilton, Connecticut. The largest pellet stoves can run for up to 24 hours.

Get the right unit

A dealer can suggest models that are suitable for your space. However, choose one that has been certified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for efficiency and clean burning. Also, look for a label from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Canadian ULC that shows the oven meets safety standards.

Pellet stoves offer homeowners a more environmentally friendly choice. The devices burn recycled sawdust that has been compressed and dried. You fill a funnel with pellets, set the heating level and the stove ignites automatically. An electrically driven screw feeds the pellets continuously into the furnace’s combustion chamber.

Price: You can only pay $ 800, but good ones start at $ 2,000, says Adam Martin of Martin Sales and Service in Butler, Pennsylvania. You can’t always get replacement parts for the cheaper ovens, and they don’t. I don’t have as good a guarantee as more expensive models, he says. And sustainability has an advantage: According to Thumbtack, an independent national price database for products and services, pellet-generated heat costs around USD 200 more per heating season than cord wood.

Convenience: There is no need to split, season, or load wood. Depending on the heat needed and the design of the oven, you may only need to refill the funnel once a day. You can use a smartphone app or a remote control to control advanced devices. But the pellet augers will not work in the event of a power failure. And bags of pellets can run short in winter, says Halsey. “We have a lot of people now calling for pellets.”

Efficiency: Pellets contain less moisture than cord wood, so pellet stoves burn more efficiently. They dominate the EPA’s list of efficient units.

Health and Safety: To refuel, do not open a combustion chamber or expose to flames, smoke and gases. And there are thermostats and switches to prevent overheating or underheating.

Space Needed: You can buy 40 pound pellet bags individually or on a pallet. A 1-ton skid with 50 sacks of pellets – less than half a season of fuel for many – is about 4 x 3½ x 4 feet.

Aesthetics: The flames of the pellet stoves, fanned by a fan, don’t look as natural, claims Halsey. “It’s a blowtorch look,” he says.

Traditional wood-burning stoves can burn any type of wood, although certain types – such as ash, grasshopper, maple, oak, pinyon pine, and walnut – burn more efficiently.

Types: New wood stoves come in two versions. Both are designed to reduce air pollution by burning off the gases and tars left after the wood is burned. Catalytic furnaces use a platinum grid for this second combustion. These stoves are generally used for heating throughout the home and require more maintenance. Non-catalytic ovens direct exhaust gases into a chamber where they are re-ignited and burned. These ovens are more popular and cost $ 500 to $ 700 less than catalytic ovens, Thumbtack estimates.

Price: New ovens cost anywhere from $ 100 to more than $ 2,500, according to Thumbtack. Cordwood costs about $ 200 less than pellets per heating season, the website estimates – and it’s free if it’s from your property.

Comfort: A wood stove can burn even in the event of a power failure. You may not have to empty the ashes every day. You also don’t have to rely on store-bought fuel. Depending on the heat required and the size of the firebox, you may need to stoke several times day and night. Also, consider the work involved in splitting your own wood. And seasoning the wood itself can take a year or more.

Health and Safety: Opening wood stove doors regularly to add firewood can expose you to burns, smoke and gases.

Space Required: A wooden string is 28 cubic feet. For a 4 foot tall, neatly packaged stack, that’s roughly 4×8 feet on the floor. If you only heat with wood, you can run through several cables per heating season.

Install with a pro

While it can be expensive, this is a task best left to a professional. A professional should be familiar with local building codes and current and safe installation methods. Ideally, use a National Fireplace Institute (NFI) certified plumber. Installation typically costs between $ 1,000 and $ 2,000, depending on the device and location. In particular, homeowner insurance companies can refuse coverage if your oven hasn’t been professionally installed – and yes, some insurers ask new applicants.

Build your security arsenal

In addition to a fireproof range rug to place in front of your stove, you may want to purchase extras to keep your family safe and comfortable. An air purifier can help remove irritating particles. A humidifier can balance the dry air that wood stoves produce. If you need a security gate, find one that is suitable for use near wood or pellet stoves. Welding gloves or pot holders can protect you when emptying ash pans. A wood-burning stove fan distributes the stove’s heat around the room when you can’t use a central air conditioning fan. An ash vacuum – starting at around $ 100 – uses a special filter to pick up fine pellet ash more effectively than a regular vacuum cleaner. And if you choose a pellet stove, you can make sure it will run during a power outage if you have backup power or a generator.

Use your resources

Read the oven manual. It can tell you the best way to load wood without introducing too much smoke into the room. It can also explain how the temperature is regulated if it gets too roasted (this happens automatically on most pellet stoves). You can also join an online forum for help, advice, and troubleshooting. For example, Hearth.com hosts several user forums.

Check annually – and clean more often

Have a certified inspector inspect your device once a year, including venting and fittings. Spring is an ideal time of year to schedule an inspection as the inspectors are less busy and less likely to get snow or ice in their way. Find an inspector through the NFI or a Chimney Safety Institute of America certified chimney sweep. Expect $ 200 to $ 500 for inspection and cleaning, depending on where you live. This is also a good time to replace your smoke and CO2 alarm batteries. Do it again in the fall.

Twice a year – also once during the heating season – clean your stove pipe or fireplace. This fresh start prevents creosote from building up inside like a clogged artery that can trap exhaust gas, which can then exert pressure, heat up, and possibly cause a chimney fire. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says fires in chimneys, chimneys, and exhaust burners account for 87 percent of residential fires caused by home heaters.

You need to remove the ashes from the stove every day. You can put them in your compost heap or sprinkle them on your garden. According to the NFPA, fire and smoke alarms should be checked monthly.

“My experience with Joseph Tobener has produced the best results! Peace and harmony in the country. I am a better tenant because of you. My landlord is a better landlord because of you. You know you handle much bigger cases than mine. Much worse problems. Yet your home is your home, so you want it to be the best it can be. I am grateful for your kind attention. That meant a lot to me. Thanks to your help, my personal life is better than it was before my problem. “- Marlene Cohen
