The world of Mary Poppins was practically perfect in every way – but behind-the-scenes there have been a number of devastating tragedies.

On-screen we were transported into a magical all-singing, all-dancing world with the much-loved British nanny and a various quirky characters.

But behind the innocent adventures of the 1964 classic, the cast were enduring personal struggles and health battles.

None more so than legendary actor Dick Van Dyke, who is thankfully still going strong at the age of 97-years-old and was recently unveiled as the Gnome on The Masked Singer.

From heartache to a suicidal battle with alcohol and a heartbreaking death, here’s a look back at the tragedies that befell the Mary Poppins cast.

Dick Van Dyke – Bert

Everyone loved cheery chimney sweep Bert(Image: Rex)

Played by Van Dyke, Bert was the one-man band, chimney sweep and kite seller with a terrible Cockney accent and a massive crush on Mary.

But during their days on set, Dick was hiding a dark secret – he was in the grips of alcoholism.

He was so desperate to get sober that he entered rehab twice, and when that failed he fell into a suicidal depression.

“We moved to a neighbourhood full of young families with the same age kids and everyone drank heavily, there were big parties every night. I would go to work with terrible hangovers which if you’re dancing is really hard,” he told the Telegraph.

“I was in deep trouble, you get suicidal and think you just can’t go on. I had suicidal feelings, it was just terrible.

“But then suddenly, like a blessing, the drink started not to taste good. I would feel a little dizzy and a little nauseous and I wasn’t getting the click. Today I wouldn’t want a drink for anything.”

After finally winning his 25-year battle, he returned to screens with Diagnosis Murder in 1993.

Dick Van Dyke was unveiled as the Gnome(Image: FOX)

Dick was unmasked as the Gnome of the American version of The Masked Singer this week – after reducing judge Nicole Scherzinger to tears.

He belted out a powerful rendition of When You’re Smiling by Frank Sinatra, then treated the audience to Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins.

Nicole then gushed over the Mary Poppins icon as she broke down in tears.

“It was really dark in there. I couldn’t see anything,” Dick joked when asked how he found performing in the Gnome outfit.

“I love you so much, we love you, the whole world loves you so much. It’s an honour to have you on our show.

“I can’t believe you’re here, I’m trying to like play it cool. You look so gorgeous, you look so handsome,” she said.

Julie Andrews – Mary Poppins

Julie Andrews was apparently the opposite of her goodie-goodie character(Image: Sportsphoto Ltd./Allstar)

Julie played the practically perfect Mary Poppins, but it was a different story off-camera.

Karen Dotrice, who played her young charge Jane Banks, said the Oscar winner was a foul-mouthed chain smoker behind-the-scenes.

“There was swearing. Julie Andrews was smoking on set. It was a very real 1960s set, I can tell you. They were polite around minors to begin with, but that soon ended,” she told The Sun.

Julie went on to win an Academy Award for her role before being cruelly robbed of the singing voice that had made her a star in a botched operation.

In 1997, she underwent surgery to remove noncancerous nodules from her vocal chords, but when she woke up her ability to sing had gone.

“If it had happened earlier, it would have been really devastating. As it was, it was devastating,” she told People magazine. “For a while, I was in total denial… I thought at the time, my voice was what I am.”

She later sued the two doctors and her case was settled for an undisclosed amount in 2000.

Matthew Garber – Michael Banks

Matthew Garber retired from acting soon after Mary Poppins(Image: Supplied by LMK)

Brit star Matthew played Michael Banks in the 1964 film Mary Poppins – but retired from acting aged 10.

He unknowingly contracted hepatitis while in India in 1976, but by the time his dad managed to get him home in 1977, it had already spread to his pancreas.

Sadly, Matthew died from haemorrhagic necrotising pancreatitis at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London at the age of just 21.

His brother Fergus, who was 13 when Matthew died, denied claims his brother contracted hepatitis by using drugs.

He said it had probably come from eating infected meat.

David Tomlinson – George Banks

David Tomlinson, pictured as Mr Banks, suffered a devastating personal loss(Image: Getty Images)

Tragically, David was widowed aged just 26 when his wife jumped from a hotel with her two sons, just weeks after they had got married.

Mary Lindsay Hiddingh’s first husband had been killed in action, leaving her to raise her two boys, Michael, eight, and John, six, alone.

Reportedly despondent over not being able to bring her children to the UK to be with David, Mary and the children plunged 15 floors on December 2, 1943, leaving him devastated.

He later married actress Audrey Freeman in May 1953 and they stayed together for 47 years until his death from a stroke aged 83.

“#sanfrancisco #imonaboat,” he captioned the Instagram post.

As for Madix and Wai, the trip marks their latest adventure together after visiting one of Chicago’s most popular tourist attractions, “The Bean,” a large reflective metal art installation in Millennium Park last month.

Ariana Madix and her boyfriend Daniel Wai in Chicago

The couple was first romantically linked back in April, when they were spotted kissing and holding hands at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in California. At the time, it had been a little over a month since Madix had learned of her longtime boyfriend Tom Sandoval’s monthslong secret with her best friend and VPR costar Raquel Leviss. Madix and Wai reportedly met at a mutual friend’s wedding in Mexico in March.

After the pair’s PDA-packed Coachella outing, an insider told PEOPLE Madix wasn’t looking to rush into anything “serious” and was just “having fun” with Wai. However, just one month later, a source revealed to PEOPLE that things were already getting serious between the two.

Story continues

“Ariana’s been telling people in her circle that she’s falling in love with him,” the source said. “They met in Mexico at a mutual friend’s wedding, shortly after Scandoval broke. At first, it looked like just a light rebound fling, but they have a special bond. Even though he lives in New York City, they’ve been able to make it work.”

“It’s happening faster than she thought but he treats her well, they’re having fun, and she’s happy to be moving on to this next chapter with such an incredible guy,” the source added.

Related: Ariana Madix Celebrates Her Birthday with Cake, Champagne — and Menu Cooked by New Love Daniel Wai

In June, Wai treated Madix to a romantic “date night” to the Orchard Quarter candlelight concert to celebrate her birthday. He also paid tribute to her with a sweet Instagram post, writing, “Happy birthday to the kindest and most generous woman I know @arianamadix.”

Though Madix is mostly keeping the details of her romance with Wai private, she did offer a glimpse into their relationship while appearing on Today in May.

“You know, I’m enjoying myself and I would say I’m very happy right now,” she told host Hoda Kotb.

She also shared the story of how she met Wai, just days after her split from Sandoval. “I met him at a wedding about 10 days after all of this,” she recalled. “And in no way shape or form did I go into that thinking anything, and I’ve just been taking things very, very slow and really enjoying myself.”

She added of Wai, “It’s just really lovely to interact with someone who is so nice and kind and caring.”

The world is changing! The crew had their hands full when Fairyland, a film based on Alysia Abbott’s memoir of the same name about growing up with a gay father during the height of the AIDS epidemic in San Fran, decided to shoot on location. “San Francisco in the ’70s was the coolest thing to see in a movie,” said director Andrew Durham at the film’s Sundance premiere. “The production team did an incredible job finding these locations,” added Scoot McNairy, who plays Steve Abbott in the film.
Porchlight Music Theater begins its ninth season of Chicago’s “lost” musical series with Porchlight Revisiting The Apple Tree, book and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, book and music by Jerry Bock, with additional material by James Coopersmith.

Each of the three musical stories in The Apple Tree is directed by a different person, Frankie Leo Bennett (The Diary of Adam and Eve), Jamal Howard (The Lady or the Tiger?) and Laura Savage (Passionella), with musical direction from David Fiorello. Porchlight Revisits The Apple Tree will be on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, December 8 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. only at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, 1016 N. Dearborn , presented for three performances street.

Porchlight Revisits subscriptions with three performance discounts are available and single tickets to Porchlight Revisits The Apple Tree are $52 at PorchlightMusicTheatre.org or by calling the Porchlight Music Theater box office at 773.777.9884.

Now in its ninth season, Porchlight Revisits celebrates the rarely seen musical gems of Broadway, Off-Broadway and beyond and is the ticket to go behind the scenes with an introduction to the luminaries who created the greatest musicals of all time, and an opportunity to discover a new “old” favorite in a big show. Chicago’s finest musical theater talent dusts off these treasures and, for a limited edition, transports audiences into the world of musical theater artistry from the past. In addition to productions from days gone by, each Porchlight Revisis includes the Behind the Show Backstory, an entertaining and informative multimedia presentation created and hosted by Artistic Director Michael Weber that introduces the evening’s production, including the show’s creative history, juicy backstage stories and much more.

Porchlight Music Theater begins its ninth season of Chicago’s “lost” musicals series with Porchlight Revisits The Apple Tree, book and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, book and music by Jerry Bock with additional material by James Coopersmith.

Each of the three musical stories in The Apple Tree is directed by a different person, Frankie Leo Bennett (The Diary of Adam and Eve), Jamal Howard (The Lady or the Tiger?), and Laura Savage (Passionella) with musical direction by David Fiorello. Porchlight Revisits The Apple Tree is presented for three performances only Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 pm and Thursday, Dec. 8 at 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, 1016 N. Dearborn Street.

Three-show discounted Porchlight Revisits subscriptions are available and single tickets to Porchlight Revisits The Apple Tree are $52 at PorchlightMusicTheatre.org or by calling the Porchlight Music Theater box office at 773.777.9884.

Now in its ninth season, Porchlight Revisits celebrates the rarely seen musical gems of Broadway, off-Broadway and beyond and is the ticket to go behind the scenes with an introduction to the luminaries who created the greatest musicals of all time and an opportunity to discover a new ‘old’ favorite all in one big show. Chicago’s finest music theater talents dust off these treasures and escort audiences into the world of the art of music theater’s past for a limited run. In addition to productions from days gone by, each Porchlight Revisits includes the Behind the Show Backstory, an entertaining and informative multimedia presentation, created and hosted by Artistic Director Michael Weber, introducing the evening’s production including the show’s creative history, juicy backstage stories and much more.

The 2022 – 2023 Porchlight Revisits season begins with The Apple Tree from the songwriting team behind Fiddler on the Roof and She Loves Me. This witty, tuneful and charming piece that was Tony nominated for Best Musical is made up of three miniatures: The Diary of Adam and Eve, a quirky, touching spin on the tale of the world’s first couple, adapted from Mark Twain’s short stories; The Lady or the Tiger?, a 1960’s rock and roll fable set in a mythical kingdom, which explores the fickleness of love and Passionella based on Jules Feiffer’s offbeat Cinderella story about a chimney sweep who dreams of being a “glamorous movie star.”

Additional Porchlight Revisits in the 2023 – 2023 season includes Porchlight Revisits I am a Camera, Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 pm and Thursday, Feb. 9 at 1:30 , a complement to Porchlight’s Mainstage Cabaret, this special event production is a rare opportunity to experience the remarkable 1951 play that became the inspiration for the musical Cabaret and Porchlight Revisits Two by Two, Wednesday, May 24 at 7:30 pm and Thursday, May 25 at 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm, with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Martin Charnin and book by Peter Stone based The Flowering Peach by Clifford Odets. Porchlight Revisits Two by Two tells the story of Noah, the flood and its aftermath with touches of modern themes including the environment and the differences from generation to generation.

It was after Miss Burke’s School for girls and Vassar College for women, after the Debutante Ball, after the wedding at Grace Cathedral and after two kids were born that Beatrice Bowles became bored with San Francisco high society.

First she got divorced, then she replaced the doors in her Russian Hill home with beaded curtains and started throwing parties. She became a storyteller in grade schools, published a book and recorded six audio storybooks.

That was during the day. At night, she danced the tango.

Throughout her transformation, “Bea” or “Bebe,” as she was alternately known, was warm and funny and generous with her time and money, which derived from two of San Francisco’s oldest empires.

Bowles died Oct. 19 after complications from minor outpatient surgery. She was 78. Her death was confirmed by her son, Cannon Michael of Los Banos (Merced County).

“She sort of missed the ’60s, but she found a way to drag them into the ’70s,” Michael said. “It was an interesting way to grow up. She was full of love and creative energy.”

Bowles moved in and out of two distinctly San Francisco worlds — the culture and the counterculture — and she endeavored to mix them together when she could. Her parties were notorious, with the likes of Gov. Jerry Brown, state appeals court Justice Tony Kline and a variety of forward-thinking authors.

“She had a broad circle of friends, everyone from her tree trimmer to Charles Reich,” the author of “The Greening of America,” a classic psalm of the counterculture, said her brother, Henry Bowles of Alameda.

“She connected up everyone in the city — artists, photographers, dancers, filmmakers.”

When Bowles took up tango dancing with his longtime partner, fiction writer Terence Clarke, she went at it the way she went at everything: full tilt and with maximum enthusiasm.

“They went to Argentina and danced in the clubs of Buenos Aires,” said her brother, “which was pretty bold for a couple of old Irish people.”

Beatrice Virginia Bowles was born Aug. 29, 1943, in New Jersey, where her father, Henry Miller Bowles, served as a captain in the US Army Signal Corps during World War II. Her mother, Constance Crowley Bowles, was a homemaker and volunteer . Both the Bowles and Crowley families date to the 1850s in San Francisco.

On her father’s side, Bowles descended from Henry Miller, who emigrated penniless from Germany in 1850. His modest beginnings as a butcher flourished over time: He would eventually be known as “the cattle king” and became one of the largest landowners in California. Part of that legacy lives on as Bowles Farming, 9,000 acres of vegetables overseen by Cannon Bowles, the sixth generation to be involved in the family business.

One her mother’s side was Tom Crowley, who started out in a rowboat delivering supplies to ships anchored in San Francisco Bay. He built it into Crowley Maritime, a family-owned shipping company based in Jacksonville, Fla.

During his freshman year at Vassar, Bowles was introduced to San Francisco society at the Cotillion Ball, an exclusive black-tie-and-white-glove affair held at the Palace Hotel. She completed her degree in English literature in 1965 and began writing short stories when she came home to San Francisco.

Soon thereafter, she married Peter Z. Michael, whom she’d known since she was a senior at Miss Burke’s School and he was a freshman at UC Berkeley. The newlyweds lived in a flat in Pacific Heights, with concert impresario Bill Graham as their upstairs neighbor. This got the couple invited up to parties with the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, in heavy rooms with marijuana smoke.

“Bea was always open to interesting people and ideas,” Michael said.

They left that scene so Michael could fulfill a two-year obligation to the US Army at Fort Sill, Okla. Afterward, New York City, the couple’s next stop was, and they had a daughter, Amanda, in 1968. They lived in a dormitory at New York University, where Michael pursued a master’s degree in tax law. Their dinner table was an ironing board.

They returned to San Francisco in 1970 and bought a shingled craftsman above the Broadway Tunnel that had been owned by her uncle, Thomas Crowley, the tugboat magnate. A son, Cannon, was born in 1972. The couple were divorced in 1974, leaving Beatrice with two young kids, and her original name of Bowles.

That’s when she replaced the doors with beaded curtains, and replaced all of the furniture with oversize cushions.

“She’d build a fire in the fireplace, and we sat on cushions to eat dinner out of wooden bowls,” said Amanda Michael, who did the baking in the family. She now owns Jane, a cafe bakery group with four locations in San Francisco.

“I learned from my mom to follow what your passion is,” Michael said. “I use food to connect people, and my mom was one of the great connectors of people.”

Some of her mom’s connections came from the San Francisco Botanical Society and Earth Island Institute, Bowles’ two main charitable causes. She’d also invite people she met at tango nightclubs. There was room for a hundred or more in her garden.

A good source of attendees was her niece Nellie Bowles, former Chronicle and New York Times tech reporter. For several years, Bowles lived in her aunt’s downstairs in-law unit. The two of them collaborated on parties. Dry martinis were served upstairs. Dry ice Negronis were downstairs.

“Upstairs was the older crowd, and downstairs were a bunch of 22-year-olds just out of college,” Nellie Bowles said. “Aunt Bea would have us upstairs for food and dancing, and then when it got too rowdy she’d send us back downstairs,” she said, employing the French term for “aunt.”

Bowles was disciplined about her writing, done in longhand on legal pads at her desk with a view of the bay. She’d take a Greek myth or a tale of California history and modernize it in a way that kids would understand.

Before she took a story into schools, she would memorize it. It was more an animated performance than a strict reading. She booked her own tours in both independent and public schools in the city, the Peninsula, Marin and public libraries.

“She would tell three or four stories and then open it up to questions,” her daughter said. “She was very much about respecting all views and teaching kids to be open and accepting.”

Bowles was paid from time to time, but she’d also do it for free if money was an obstacle. A collection of her stories was published as “Spider Grandmother’s Web of Wonders,” in 2020. She was eager to get out and read from it when COVID-19 closed the schools and libraries. Even then, she recorded her stories, and they live on her website, beatricebowles.com.

“Bea was magic. She really was,” her brother said. “She had a way of befriending people from every walk of life, and they all loved her.”

A public memorial will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, Nov. 23, in the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park. Donations in her name may be made to the San Francisco Botanical Garden and Earth Island Institute.

In addition to her son and daughter, Bowles is survived by her brothers, Henry Bowles of Alameda and Philip Bowles of San Francisco, and five grandchildren.

Walgreens announced Tuesday that it would close five of its San Francisco locations for “organized retail crime” Saturday.

While the report says the chain experienced retail theft, other factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and store oversaturation were cited as potential factors in the decision to close stores.

Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso said retail theft at its San Francisco locations had increased five times the chain’s average in recent months, SFGate reported.

However, the data from the San Francisco Police Department received from the Chronicle contradicts claims made by Walgreens, as one of the stores slated to close since 2018 has only reported 23 shoplifting incidents per month since 2018.

“Organized retail crime remains a challenge for retailers across San Francisco, and we are not immune to it,” Caruso told SFGate. “To combat this problem, we have increased our investments in security measures in stores across the city over this time to 46 times our chain average to create a safe environment.”

San Francisco Mayor London Breed dismissed Walgreens’ reasons for closing the shops.

“They say (shoplifting is) the main reason, but I also think when a place is not generating revenue and when it’s saturated – SF has a lot of Walgreens locations across the city – so I think there are other factors coming into play “she told reporters last week.

The story goes on

Dean Preston, supervisor for San Francisco’s 5th District, which will be affected by a store closure, said the pharmacy chain was “out of the community” and had “long planned to close,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“Weird that some would be so offended that I would suggest that a huge corporate chain shut down retail locations for the very reason they told investors they were going to shut down, rather than the reasons outlined in their external PR are specified, ”said Preston in a tweet on Friday.

In a 2019 filing by the Security and Exchange Commission, Walgreens announced it would launch a Transformational Cost Management Program that would close 200 stores in the US to save $ 1.5 billion annually through 2022 in spending.

A May study published by Stanford economist Nicholas Bloom found that 15% of San Francisco residents left and did not return during the pandemic, which the Chronicle says could explain Walgreens’ dwindling customer base in the city.

San Francisco has relatively high rates of property crime, which according to the Chronicle, criminal justice researcher Magnus Lofstrom may be due in part to the Bay Area’s enormous income equality.

Walgreens did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – People across the Bay Area are trying hard to get retested for coronavirus due to the Delta variant, but many find it not that easy to get a test appointment this time around.

“Appointment Only” signs are clearly posted on San Francisco’s newest high volume test site, which reopened Wednesday. The site on the 7th and Brannan can test 500 people a day.

CONTINUE READING: San Jose Reid-Hillview Airport will be closed due to lead levels following the vote by district regulators

But many are trying to get in and claim they urgently need to get tested anyway.

“Now I have to wait a couple of weeks until I’m free and get it ready. It’s kind of stupid, “said the San Francisco resident Mark.

The city’s test map shows some locations with drop-in availability, but opening times are often limited. Getting to a more distant location can be a logistical challenge.

“I was worried about getting a test. I am vaccinated. I don’t have a lot of time because I work a lot, ”said Mark.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health wants large health care providers to do more to offer testing during the surge in demand.

“I’ve had some symptoms like a sore throat and tiredness, so I just go in to make sure,” said a San Francisco resident who called her Christine.

Health officials are encouraging people – including travelers – to get tested by health care providers or buy test kits at home instead of using city websites.
