Dos Pueblos celebrated Wednesday during a signing ceremony at Sovine Gym that its senior squad of student athletes advanced to the next level in 2023.

Fourteen Chargers were introduced and praised by their trainers during the luncheon ceremony.

The student-athletes signing college bids are: Makeila Cervantes (Pomona Pitzer for indoor volleyball), Avery Ball (Messiah College for lacrosse), Emma Gilbert (Harvard for water polo), Ava Bennett (Pomona Pitzer for water polo), Ryan Speshyock ( Stanford for baseball), Chloe Hoffman (Stanford for beach volleyball), Lucy Speier (University of San Francisco for beach volleyball), Maddie Nees (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical for lacrosse), Tyler Jamieson (University of Colorado-Colorado Springs for cross country/track). ), Luci Koroshec (Westmont College for Cross Country/Track), Phoebe Wolfe Lyons (Claremont-McKenna for Cross Country/Track), Brynn Graham (UC Davis for Swimming), Cooper Costello (University of Chicago for Swimming), Nikko Carrillo ( Wagner University of Swimming).

This was the 16th year that Dos Pueblos recognized all of its graduate student-athletes who signed college offers.

“We had 4-5 students that we recognized in the first year,” Feldhaus recalls. “We started small and now we have arrived at this great event. It’s one of my favorite activities we do here.”

He said the ceremony was started to recognize the achievements of the student-athletes.

“Their dedication goes beyond the pool, the field and the court. These students also met their academic requirements to achieve this goal. They were successful in class and were able to balance their sport at a very high level.”

Graham is looking forward to swimming for coach Matt Macedo at UC Davis. He formerly coached at UCSB and was twice named Big West Coach of the Year.

She said the team environment under Macedo “is simply the best I’ve seen and that’s what really interested me about the whole program.

“I wanted to go to a Division 1 program and UC Davis felt really good in both science and swimming.”

Wolfe Lyons said Claremont McKenna was her choice from the start.

“I wanted a small liberal arts school and I knew I wanted to run (at the NCAA Division 3 level). I made an overnight visit there at the end of September. I was planning a trip back east as I was checking out some other places. But after the visit, to stay with the team, learn about the culture and take a class, I said I wanted to be here.”

She thanked her team at DP for helping make this signing day possible.

“Our team was the best. I wouldn’t be standing here today if my teammates weren’t the best people ever and just made me happy, made me run faster and made me a better person.”

Koroshec and Jamieson were part of DP boys’ cross-country teams that competed in back-to-back CIF state championships.

Jamieson said that “qualifying for the state two years in a row with this group of guys, Orlando Ye, Luci” was his highlights as a DP athlete. “The whole process with them and then the last two years has been really special.”

Koroshec said that the highlights of his high school career were making a standing in his junior year and then being the first DP team finisher at the championships last season.

As for running in college, “It’s super exciting, I’m over the moon,” he said. “I didn’t even think about going to Westmont until earlier this year. When I first started meeting Coach (Russ) Smelley and the team, I said, ‘Yes, this is the place for me to continue to grow as a student and as an athlete.’

“I’m super excited to have signed today.”

Jamieson said Colorado-Colorado Springs was the first school he considered as a place to continue his running career and education.

“They reached out to me throughout this process,” he said. “I paid a visit, spoke to the coach and everything was just great.”

Jakub “Kuba” Mosur has biked across San Francisco so many times that its steep, unforgiving hills don’t bother him. As he pedals up the slopes, his mind is on something else entirely — his art.

Mosur, 46, is part of a community of local athletes who use location-tracking software that records their every move as they bike or run the city’s streets to create images such as animals, people, symbols and words. They travel well-plotted-out routes, and the resulting images appear on the software’s maps, which they then share on social media to display their “art.”

In essence, San Francisco’s landscape is a canvas and the art is a large-scale contour drawing based on the athlete’s movements. For San Francisco’s GPS artists, biking or running up and down hills is simply part of the creative process.

“It’s healthy, obviously, and it’s fun,” said Lenny Maughan, 61, a distance runner whose thousands of Instagram followers know him as the “Human Etch A Sketch.”

“Distance and length are totally irrelevant,” he said. “I make a design and do whatever it takes.”

The hobby — some call it “GPS art,” others “running art” or simply “run-art” — lends itself to creativity and adaptability. Because it’s a relatively new medium, the community is largely decentralized, with little structure, no expectations and lots of room for low-stakes experimentation.

Local GPS artists have digitally plastered San Francisco with words, quirky symbols and other squiggly designs representing everything from people and animals to images and phrases that call attention to current events.

“It’s organic and everyone kind of does their own thing,” Maughan said. “This isn’t something that someone can make a paint-by-numbers kit and tell you what to do. If so, what’s the point?”

What the artists have in common is their obsession with accuracy. With location-tracking apps such as Strava, MapMyRun and Relive responsible for “drawing” the line that the artists carefully plan, precision is everything. One wrong turn or misplaced starting or ending point and the whole drawing can be ruined.

“You don’t have to be fast to make the run-art; you just have to not make the wrong turn,” said Frank Chan, 49, a Russian Hill resident who started making run-art around the start of the pandemic.

Before lacing up his running shoes, Chan uses Photoshop or similar software to sketch the design he has in mind over a digital map of San Francisco. It can be a painstaking process, sometimes requiring multiple revisions to smooth out bumpy lines, reduce or increase the length of the route or adjust the route to avoid buildings and other structures.

“If you’re doing it right, it usually takes longer to sketch out and plan than to run the damn thing,” Chan said with a laugh.

Once his design is ready, he prints out the map, straps on two Garmin watches in case one of them fails to track his movement, and heads out. Most of the time, he doesn’t need directions; having run every street in San Francisco helps him know where to turn, he said. Maughan, who is close to accomplishing that feat, uploads his design to a Kindle and reads the image like a paper map. Mosur, his hands on the handlebars, has a small Wahoo GPS clipped to his custom bike.

The planned routes can be dozens of miles long — the longer the route, the clearer and smoother the image. It can take several days to finish running or biking the longest ones. But in some ways, those lengthy runs or bike rides are what the hobby is all about, the artists said. Some crave a runner’s high — “you have to earn it,” Maughan said. Some enjoy the feeling of connection they get with the city or use the art form as a way to spice up their workouts.

As they zip through neighborhoods, past waterfronts and over hills, the artists get a varied sampling of the best — and worst — of San Francisco. On a single run or bike ride, they might pass elegant multimillion-dollar Victorians one minute and people struggling with homelessness and drug addiction the next.

“It can be a way to sort of force certain interactions with the world,” Chan said. That was especially important, he noted, when the pandemic began.

For Mosur, the GPS art can feel ethereal, he said, like an image drawn in the sand before waves wash it away. A history buff — his bike is named Le Vizir after Napoleon’s trusty steed — Mosur said his work ironically reminds him of some of humanity’s earliest art forms, such as cave paintings and geoglyphs like the Nazca Lines in Peru. When he rides his bike, occasionally in a Napoleon costume for fun, he feels like he is telling a story, he said.

“I kind of want to create this historical narrative across chronological time, but also I’m doing it to kind of inspire others that may be into art or may be into cycling to think of their exercise in a different way,” Mosur said. “It doesn’t have to be just me moving my legs on a bike pedal, but rather it could be just a different expression and a way of communicating with the rest of the world.”

The artists share their work on Instagram, Strava and other online platforms, and have developed a community of like-minded athletes interested in GPS art as a creative outlet. Some of them do group rides or runs and have collaborated on some larger projects. Chan and Maughan worked together to recreate Michelangelo’s famous “The Creation of Adam,” with Chan running the line that would become Adam’s hand and Maughan creating God’s, the two fingertips meeting in the Haight-Ashbury.

“Art is suddenly — to my delight, and not to my expectations — part of my life again,” said Maughan, who as a kid would doodle caricatures of his friends, inspired by the art in Mad Magazine.

Maughan is retired now but plans to keep on running until he can’t anymore, he said. While his running art is nothing more than a personal challenge, he said, it does make him happy to know that he may be inspiring others to think artistically.

Perhaps others can find a high in making running art, too.

“You have a canvas,” Chan said. “You should do something with it.”

STANFORD (CBS SF) – Track and field officials announced Tuesday that spectators will no longer be allowed to attend indoor events at Stanford University, including home games for the defending women’s basketball team of the National Championship, and outdoor events this winter in the face of the Rising COVID-19 cases need to be socially distanced due to the omicron variant.

Under the new policy announced on Tuesday, participation in indoor sporting events will be limited to the families of student athletes with immediate effect. Meanwhile, spectators at outdoor events are socially distanced and the wearing of masks is mandatory.

“Cardinal student athletes are fortunate to have tremendous support at our home events. However, after extensive consultation with medical advisors and the university administration, it became very clear that implementing these measures at this point is the right thing to do to protect our community, ”said the university’s sports director, Bernard Muir, in a statement.

Basketball is one of the sports affected, including the women’s basketball team, which currently ranks # 1. 2 in the country. Other sports affected include swimming and diving, gymnastics, and baseball and softball, which are slated to begin in February.

While campus remains open, Stanford is just beginning its quarter of online learning due to concerns about the Omicron variant. Students must also be given a booster vaccination or waiver by the end of the month.

According to an email from Russell Furr, Associate Vice Provost of Environmental Health & Safety, 146 students were isolated in college dormitories on Monday afternoon after testing positive for COVID after the winter break.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and will keep you informed of any changes to campus protocols that may become necessary,” Furr wrote, according to Stanford Daily.

In-person learning is slated to resume after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) – Following a US Supreme Court ruling in favor of college athletes’ compensation, two major California lawmakers say they will introduce the state’s pioneering Fair Pay to Play Act in time for the 2021 college football season want.

State law that allows college and university athletes in California to make money using their name, picture, and likeness does not currently go into effect until January 1, 2023.

State Senators Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, and Steven Bradford, D-Gardena, say they plan to go into effect September 1st.

“California has taken state action to challenge the NCAA’s exploitation of college athletes, and today the Supreme Court essentially agreed to tell the NCAA that they could no longer act as monopoly“ price fixers, ”” Skinner said in a statement on Monday. “And with 18 states following California’s lead to give student athletes ownership of their name, image and likeness, student athletes are the winners.”

NIL laws in seven states – Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, New Mexico, Mississippi, and Texas – will come into effect this year.

“Postponing the entry into force of the Fair Pay to Play Act is a sensible move to ensure that college student athletes, many of whom are people of color, are treated earlier with financial fairness and economic ownership,” said Bradford. “It also enables California higher education institutions to attract the best talent compared to schools in other states that would otherwise have a head start in attracting athletes by implementing similar guidelines earlier.”

The September 1st implementation date makes the law an urgent measure, which means it requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the legislature. To date, it has received strong bipartisan support, has no opposition, and has not received “no” votes.

The US Supreme Court ruled Monday that the NCAA cannot enforce certain rules that limit the educational benefits – things like computers and graduate scholarships – that colleges offer athletes. But the case doesn’t determine whether student salaries can be paid.

Colleges harvest billions of student athletes but keep them from making a single dollar. It’s a bankrupt model.

In a unanimous opinion, Judge Brett Kavanaugh wrote: “The bottom line is that the NCAA and its member colleges are cutting the pay of student athletes who collectively generate billions of dollars in college revenue each year. These enormous sums of money seem to flow to everyone except the student athletes. College presidents, sporting directors, coaches, conference commissioners, and NCAA executives earn six- and seven-digit salaries. Colleges are building generous new facilities. But the student athletes who make the income, many of which are African American and low-income backgrounds, end up with little or nothing. “

The Google Arts & Culture app is sweeping social media as people rush to take their selfie and see if works of art look like them. It’s utterly pointless, seldom accurate, and often funny – which is why it’s perfect that we get a few athletes through this thing.

We’ll start it with LeBron James. Let’s see how the world’s most famous basketball player behaves in this app.

I mean the hairline is totally on point. The teeth also look accurate. It’s not exactly flattering, but I kind of see what they’re up to here.

If James is the Alpha, Tom Brady is the Omega. We will see famous goats with big names here.

Oh my god he’s a troll!

I’m not saying Touchdown Tom isn’t a handsome man, but there’s no denying that Google’s algorithms developed by Silicon Valley believe that he’s at least 44 percent a misshapen monster who lives under a bridge. That’s bizarre because Tom Brady’s terrible court sketch actually leads to something pretty.

Maybe something is due to this idea: the prettier you are in real life, the worse you are in the shape of Google Arts & Culture? Let’s take this to the limit.

The young diplomat will drop the 2018 fire album.

This pasty sack of meat is nothing compared to the modern hunk, Cristiano Ronaldo. So far checks the theory. If you put your photo through the tool and the result is ugly, you can be sure: you are beautiful.

Let’s try Nick Saban now, because why not?

Can we please all agree to call Saban “THE GUARDIAN OF THE DAMPERS” from now on? Sorry? You can make it my Christmas AND my birthday present. It’s like an inexpensive Alabama version of “THE MOTHER OF DRAGONS,” only these eggs can be hatched by sitting on them and not walking into the fire. OK, well, I know roosters don’t lay eggs. Get off my back

Will Kristaps Porzingis bring us a beautiful majestic unicorn?

Because of this, we can feel safe in our possible robot-controlled hell future. If they think a 7’0 athletic monster is a baby, we can slowly build a Latvian army that will overthrow the robots and cut them off from their battery supplies.

Aaron Judge is a chimney sweep. OK that’s perfect. Beautiful people are ugly according to computers, and giant people are children. We can still win this future war. Both Judge and Porzingis are young athletes. So let’s take a look at one of the old guardsmen. An old guard in the truest sense of the word.

There is some quality to this from Peter Stormare, but I have no doubt that this looks somehow accurate.

What did we learn from this experiment?

1. Beautiful people make ugly art and vice versa.
2. Robots don’t know the difference between 7’0 men and babies.
3. Saban is “the keeper of the roofs”

What did we REALLY learn?

Nothing. And isn’t that really great art? Art for art’s sake.
