San Ramon College students Win Competitors With Plantable Pencil Enterprise

SAN RAMON, CA — A group of San Ramon students won first place in three categories at the Junior Achievement Company of the Year Competition for Northern California. Eliana Horn, Abigail Yu, Stephanie Li (all juniors at Dougherty Valley High School) and Ashley Huang (a junior at Lowell High School in San Francisco), received top scores for their company Scribble Sprout.

Scribble Sprout has developed an innovative plantable pencil, which comes with a journal made out of recyclable journal that also includes prompts to “cultivate your thought garden.” The pencil’s tip can be replanted into the soil to grow another plant.

“This unique solution aims to reduce waste, promote sustainability, and contribute to improved mental health. Scribble Sprout’s products have been successfully sold in various venues, ranging from San Francisco to San Ramon,” Horn wrote in an email to Patch.

The Junior Achievement competition required participants to develop a product and successfully market it to the public. Scribble Sprout scored first place in three categories: Company of the Year, Company Commercial, and Company Report.

The team now hopes to compete at the national level.
