San Francisco’s Cliff Home restaurant more likely to return as quickly as spring, in line with report

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – San Francisco’s famous Cliff House building could potentially be home to a restaurant again by spring this year, according to a report.

The National Park Service, which owns the property, is looking for another restaurant to move into, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The San Francisco board of directors unanimously voted Tuesday for a resolution by the NPS to use the space immediately while it searches for a long-term tenant.

The 157 year old restaurant closed earlier this year. Previous owners Dan and Mary Hountalas say the closure was due to delays by the National Park Service in reaching a long-term operating agreement. The last long-term contract between the Cliff House and the National Park Service expired in June 2018, and the restaurant has since been operating under a number of short-term contracts. The Hountalas added that the COVID-19 pandemic only made problems worse. There were 180 employees who lost their jobs.

The Cliff House closed their in-house dinner in March and after 10 weeks of takeaway service only, the restaurant closed to diners. Operators said they tried to try a take-away-only service in early June, but after 10 weeks the service closed completely in mid-July as the restaurant lost too much money as a take-away.
