San Francisco 49ers may nonetheless commerce Jimmy Garoppolo earlier than Week 1

The San Francisco 49ers are set for the future at quarterback with Trey Lance. But while many expect Lance to be on the sidelines in Week 1, it seems that a Jimmy Garoppolo deal is still in sight.

If the 49ers swapped to number 3 and gave up three selections in the first round, a suspected Lance was the target. He was the perfect quarterback to sit behind Garoppolo for a year before being released in 2022.

Suddenly, draft rumors suggested Kyle Shanahan wanted Mac Jones. As the enthusiasm for Jones for San Francisco grew louder, the 49ers began to shop for Garoppolo. While he valued Jones so highly, he was relatively pro-ready and was ready to fill in as the 49ers quarterback.

Shanahan designed Lance and considered him the best double threat weapon to take this offense to the next level. Shortly after the choice was made, Garoppolo vowed to mentor the rookie, and it was suggested the veteran would stay and open the season as the starting quarterback.

However, this may not be a given. NFL insider Dan Graziano appeared on ESPN’s Get Up explaining how Lance will fight for the 49ers’ starting appearance, and announced that a Garoppolo trade is still on the table.

“Can Trey Lance have a summer good enough to make the 49ers confident that they can trade Jimmy Garoppolo and get Trey Lance a starter? I think that’s an important act to watch in the 49ers this summer, and it doesn’t rule out it from happening and Garoppolo ending up elsewhere. “Dan Graziano from ESPN on Get Up

Who will be the 49ers quarterback in 2021?

Lance is not preferred as the starting quarterback in Week 1. He only played one game last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the jump from FCS to the NFL is an extremely daunting challenge.

But he has committed a pro-syle misdemeanor in the state of North Dakota, which Jones and even Trevor Lawrence cannot tell. He will also have the benefit of getting reps at the rookie mini camp and will be given plenty of opportunities when the training camp arrives.

Based on physical tools and perk, Lance is the better option for the 49ers. He has a stronger arm and his athleticism makes him perfect for this heavy offensive. Garoppolo’s experience in this system works in his favor, but rookie quarterbacks hit with a top 10 picks don’t last long.

It is advisable for the 49ers to keep Garoppolo for the time being. He’ll be a great mentor to Lance this summer, and insurance with quarterback is never a bad thing. While there are currently no teams with extreme needs at quarterback, an injury could change that and give the 49ers more leverage in the negotiations.

Even if Lance doesn’t win the starting job to open the season, it won’t be long before he wrestles the gig away from Garoppolo. Once that happens, the 49ers could act quickly to use their quarterback fortune to improve the roster.
