Quick-moving Loma Fireplace in Santa Barbara forces evacuation of TV newsroom, properties

A fast moving vegetation fire broke out in the city of Santa Barbara Thursday evening, forcing the evacuation of a television news room and the surrounding neighborhood.

Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason said the fire in Loma, currently about 20 acres, was reported at 8:55 p.m. on the slope between Miramonte Drive and Loma Alta Drive near the KEYT TV news.

Officials evacuated the newsroom and residents of surrounding neighborhoods, including Miramonte Drive, Loma Alta Drive and Via del Cielo, Eliason said.

The fire is currently wind driven and burning uphill, he said.
