Plumbing, HVAC firms busy with calls

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The arctic gust can also be felt inside.

Many plumbers and HVAC teams were busy taking emergency calls.

“It needs to be fixed, and fast, so we need to be operational,” said Dan Geller, Bob Hamilton’s general manager.

What should you do if your power goes out in freezing weather?

No matter the temperature or the hour, Bob Hamilton’s staff are ready to respond.

“I woke up at 2 a.m. this morning and all of a sudden my phone started exploding,” Geller said. “So what I did when people called at 2 and 3 a.m., I called them back.”

According to Geller, 624 people have called in since midnight about a plumbing or HVAC issue.

“The average number for us is between 200 and 250 depending on the time of year,” said Geller.

The company has 12 technicians tending furnaces and six plumbers fixing broken pipes, and they’re not the only ones who respond to calls.

Should you drip water when freezing?

“You know we struggle with regular calls and now we’re seeing frozen water lines early in the season,” said Mission Heating’s master plumber Kenton Turpin.

Turpin said Mission Heating also saw an influx of calls during the Arctic blast.

“I had a call this morning where I couldn’t do anything because the air got in under the foundation and as soon as I thawed it it froze right back up,” Turpin said.
