Chimney Sweep

New Trailer: ‘Mary Poppins Returns’

ABC and Disney are nothing if they’re not in commercial sync. The trailer for Disney’s next Marvel movie “Avengers: Infinity War” debuted during the station’s “Good Morning America,” and now the Mouse House selected its 90th Academy Awards television show to feature the teaser trailer for Highly anticipated sequel to introduce one of his most popular films: “Mary Poppins Returns”.

The clip doesn’t reveal much, but we see Emily Blunt as the eponymous nanny, who soars from the sky with a kite, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who rides a bicycle and looks very much like Dick Van Dyke’s chimney, Sweep from the original 1964 musical. In the new version, Mr. Van Dyke also appears in a different role, as the son of the stingy banker Mr. Dawes.

Meryl Streep, who reunites with Ms. Blunt from “The Devil Wears Prada” and director Rob Marshall from “Into the Woods,” plays Poppin’s cousin Topsy; another legendary actor, Angela Lansbury, plays the Balloon Lady, but none of them appear in the teaser.

Mary Poppins Returns reveals the adult Jane and Michael Banks (Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw) who reunite with their magical caregiver 25 years after the first film in the Depression Era London. “It’s wonderful to see you,” Michael says to Mary, who she agrees. “That’s it, isn’t it?” We’ll see if moviegoers feel just as supercalifragilistic and expialistic when the new “Poppins” hit theaters on Christmas Day.
