SAN FRANCISCO — With seven rookies on their active roster, the Giants are in the midst of a youth movement, but it was their third-longest tenure player who stole the show Monday night.
Mike Yastrzemski started two home runs, including a game-winning three-run blast against left-hander Ray Kerr in the 10th inning to give the Giants a 7-4 walk-off win over the Padres at Oracle Park and prolong the win The club’s eight-game winning streak.
Yastrzemski hit a home run on Padres right-hander Michael Wacha to put the Giants to two points in the sixth inning, then hit Patrick Bailey’s sacrifice run for the deciding run to cap a two-run rally late in the ninth inning and extra to force innings.
The 32-year-old hitter delivered the final punch in the 10th. With the score tied 4-4, Kerr purposely went to Thairo Estrada to place a pair of bishops for Blake Sabol, who advanced the bishops with a perfect sacrifice throw. “That was probably the first time I enjoyed it a bit,” Yastrzemski said. “I’m always afraid that the ball will be caught. I don’t really meet many that I know for sure.”
The Giants also got a solo shot from David Villar and five innings with a one-run ball from rookie Keaton Winn, who conceded a home run to Juan Soto in the first pitch of his Oracle Park debut but then settled for San’s at-bats To give Francisco a chance to collect himself.
“We’re just having fun,” said Yastrzemski. “We don’t take anything too seriously. We always try to stay competitive. We try to tackle one pitch at a time. Trying to get four runs at once doesn’t usually do that well, so we’re just trying to have good bats. I think everyone really accepted that and it worked out well.”
The Giants outplayed the Cardinals and Dodgers by a 52-19 lead during their perfect six-game road trip, but faded out in the first four innings and only got onto the field when Villar executed a first-pitch fastball from Wacha to left centerfield for a solo home run in the fifth.
Yastrzemski reduced the deficit to 4-2 with another solo attack in the sixth round before the Giants equalized at the end of the ninth round.
Sabol opened the inning with a leadoff walk, advanced to third base through Yastrzemski’s single-to-left field and scored to make it 4-3 after a wild pitch from Luis García. JD Davis kept the line moving with another walk, putting runners in the corners, with an out for Bailey, who raised a game-winning sacrifice throw into left field to score Yastrzemski.
“That was probably more exciting,” said Yastrzemski, who had to make an effort from third position to prevent Soto’s shot on the plate. “It was one of those plays where it could have ended up taking the lead. I just hung around for a second and got the right reading, and luckily I made it just in time. I was pretty excited that the game was a draw.”
Back-to-back walks from Villar and Casey Schmitt – who came on Monday with just one walk in his first 133 major league plate appearances – put two outs on the bases, but Kerr knocked out Joc Pederson to take the game to the to send extras.
