A man was killed when a tree fell on his truck while the vehicle was moving on Alpine Road in Portola Valley on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Winds swirled through the Bay Area as a powerful storm swept across the region Tuesday afternoon, downing trees in the area.

The CHP received reports of the incident at 1:34 p.m. Tuesday. The vehicle, a sewage truck, was traveling eastbound on Alpine Road toward Interstate 280. The tree fell while the vehicle was moving, killing the driver, who was the only occupant of the car, authorities said.

According to the CHP, several trees had fallen in the same area from 2:45 p.m.

A Bay Area News Group photographer on site confirmed that the truck carried signs for Able Plumbing, Sewer & Drain. A person who answered the phone for the company Tuesday afternoon declined to comment.

The driver was not immediately identified by authorities until the identity was confirmed and next of kin notified.
