Look ahead to scammers whereas looking for plumbing repairs
AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR / KCIT) – After last week’s winter weather, many have been looking for plumbers to help with their winter weather issues, but be careful who you hire.
Janna Kiehl, president of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Amarillo, said there are ways to tell the difference between a legitimate company and a potential scam.
“When there is a bad situation and many people in the community are in need at the same time, you have door-to-door companies ready to help. And there will be companies there too, and individuals who just want to take your money. The only way to tell the difference between these two companies is to check with BBB, ”said Kiehl.
Check the plumber’s report with the BBB:
“Of course, the first thing you want to do is check the BBB report. We will have licensing information on this report, and you can check this with the State Board of Licensing, ”said Kiehl. “Make sure you are using a licensed contractor so you know the work is being done properly. An accredited company with the BBB will also help you get the job done right. If there are problems with the work, they will fix them and help resolve those problems. “
Take a look at your options:
Kiehl said a reputable company will give you the time and opportunity to look around.
“You might get two or three bids and think that the lowest bid is the best offer when it actually isn’t,” said Kiehl. “There are other things that need to be considered: Can the company do this job? Do they, you know, have the equipment and people to do this in my time frame? Can they get along with you because most of the plumbing is done in the house and they will be at your home? Do you know can you work with this company and is it a good relationship? “
Read the estimate carefully:
“Listen to the contractor and let him tell you exactly what will happen. What are they going to do at your home? Do you know what has to happen? Does the water have to be turned off? Are you going to run out of water for a while? Will you be able to stay home while this is happening? You want to look closely and make sure you understand everything, ”said Kiehl. “But before you get to that point, it’s a good idea to get some bids too. Receive two or three commandments and ask, do you know, all the details about what will go into that commandment and how it will affect your specific project. And then, based on all the information you have, you can make a good decision. “
Get it in writing:
Kiehl said it was always a good idea to get everything in writing and make sure the work is specified.
“Also, keep in mind that when someone gets on a project there may be additional costs when there are additional issues or additional things that need to be fixed.”
