Larry Moroney Obituary (1938 – 2023) – San Francisco, CA
July 22, 1938 – March 9, 2023
Larry Moroney died peacefully at home on March 9, 2023 at the age of 84 with his beloved wife Margaret and daughter Linda by his side.
Larry was born in Ireland on July 22, 1938 and spent his youth swimming in the River Shannon in County Roscommon with his 11 siblings. At the age of 18 he emigrated to England and then on to San Francisco where he settled. In 1958 Larry was drafted into the US Army, where he served two years. Upon his return, Larry played for the championship Irish football team in 1960 and 1961 and was inducted into the San Francisco GAA Hall of Fame.
In 1965 he met the love of his life, Margaret, at the Carousel Ballroom and a little over a year later they married, uniting the O’Brien, Moroney and McNulty clans into one family unit. In 1967, Larry and Margaret welcomed their daughter, Linda. Larry worked as a plumber and was always there to help friends and neighbors when they were in need. Larry was a founding member of the United Irish Cultural Center and a regular presenter, joke teller and musical talent at the annual Connaught Tour. In his later years, Larry loved nothing more than attending 49ers and Giants games with his grandchildren, Danielle and Rory, and he even made a pilgrimage to spring training at one point.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Margaret and his siblings Michael (May), Patricia (Jimmy), Philomena, Tommy, Nancy (Kevin) and Myra.
Larry is survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Linda Moroney Grady, son-in-law Chris, grandchildren Danielle and Rory, sisters Nuala (Con), Christine, Mildred (Billy), brothers Vincent (Betty), and Willie (Nuala), among many others nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service in honor of Larry on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Saint Brendan Church in San Francisco, California. A celebration of life that follows after Mass.
