Lady in intensive care after marble slab falls off San Francisco constructing, ‘almost killed’ her

CURRENT August 4th, 12:45 p.m. The partner of the woman, who was hit by a marble slab outside a restaurant in San Francisco, speaks out for her.

Gwen Grohs, the victim’s girlfriend, told SFGATE that the fire department’s claims of a “minor” injury were incorrect.

“Despite what the fire department claims, her injury was quite serious; she almost died and she has traumatic brain injury,” Grohs said in an email.

“She had to have an operation to stop the bleeding from her head,” she added, explaining that a drain was installed to allow the blood to drain from the head wound. Astrid, the victim, is currently in intensive care after suffering a concussion from the impact. (Your full name will not be published for privacy reasons.)

Grohs has also set up a GoFundMe for Astrid to “cover costs such as food for yourself and your dog, utilities and rent”. She says she will take legal action against the builder.

August 3, 2:30 p.m. A woman was reportedly knocked unconscious on Tuesday in San Francisco after a piece of marble siding fell from a building and hit her.

Patrick Burns, a San Francisco resident, told SFGATE that he would be “just around the corner from Hyde to Geary at around 7:30 pm Monday night.”

“The marble cladding,” he said, “fell from a floor above the woman and hit her.”

It knocked her unconscious, he said, but wasn’t sure if the siding hit her in the head or shoulder.

Passers-by at the scene, including a bartender from nearby With a Twist, helped the woman, whose identity is unknown, before first responders arrived at the scene and took her to the hospital.

The San Francisco Fire was on site, Burns said, and a spokesman said she had “minor injuries”.

The San Francisco Department of Building Inspection, the spokesman added, was later called in to assess the building.

The building with the overturned marble slab is the Anh Hong – Bo 7 Mon Vietnamese restaurant on Lower Nob Hill, but it is unclear whether the owners of the restaurant own the building.

A call from SFGATE to Anh Hong on Wednesday morning was not answered.

Burns posted about the incident on Reddit, where he provided more information about the woman. She has blonde hair and wore a brown sweater and rainbow hat.

The San Francisco police were unaware of the incident when they were contacted by SFGATE.
