KCSO: Fireplace at Halls Center Faculty unintended, attributable to defective HVAC unit

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. – Update (February 8, 2021): The Knox County Sheriff’s office completed its investigation into the cause of the fire in an outdoor classroom at Halls Middle School on Sunday and said it was an accident.

According to MPs, a faulty HVAC unit caused the fire.

Rural Metro Fire responded to a reported structural fire in Halls Middle School shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday.

When the crews arrived, officials said they found fire from an HVAC wall unit of a modular classroom outside the main building that had spread to the attic.

According to Rural Metro, the fire was quickly extinguished, but the interior of the classroom building suffered smoke damage. There was no other damage to any other building from the fire.

According to official information, no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
