Inexpensive senior housing constructing opens in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – A 100% affordable senior citizen apartment building opened today in San Francisco’s Mission District, which has been under development for a decade.

First proposed in 2011, Casa de La Mision is located at 3001 24th Street and will house 44 seniors who have previously experienced homelessness and have been referred through the coordinated access system of the San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing.

It is the fourth of seven 100% affordable housing projects in the Mission in the past 18 months after no new affordable housing was built in the neighborhood for over a decade.

“It is an honor to celebrate the opening of Casa de la Mision and to welcome 44 seniors to our city in their new homes,” said Breed. “Providing safe and affordable housing, especially for our seniors and people emerging from homelessness, is more important than ever. As we look beyond the pandemic and our economic recovery, investing in projects like this will help us serve our most vulnerable people and create a fairer city for all San Franciscans. “

The facilities include a residents’ lobby, administrative offices, a meeting room and a common room on the ground floor. The top floor of the development has an outdoor rooftop terrace and a communal laundry room.

Initial plans for the retail space include subletting to the San Francisco Bike Coalition for a new bike repair shop.

Construction began in January 2020 and the building was 100% occupied by summer 2021. All housing units are supported by a city-funded contract through a local business development program, which ensures that households only pay 30% of their income in rent.
