After almost 72 years of marriage Gene and Dolores Godfrey passed away within a day and a half of each other. A beautiful sentiment to their incredible bond.
Dolores Cecelia Sanchez Godfrey more commonly known as Tweety, age 92, was born in San Francisco, and lived there her entire life. Tweety attended Cleveland Elementary School, Denman Middle School and Balboa High School where she made lifelong friendships. Tweety spent her married life raising her children and keeping a warm and welcoming home. In later years she enjoyed spending time and taking care of her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was beloved by many for her kind and fun loving spirit.
Gene Lyle Godfrey, 93, was born in San Francisco and also lived there his entire life. Gene attended San Miguel Elementary School, Denman Middle School and Balboa High School. He served in the US Army and was the recipient of a Purple Heart due to injuries from his service in the Korean War. Gene was initiated in the Plumbers Union Local 38 in 1947, making him a member for 75 years. He was a plumbing contractor and long time owner of Shaw Plumbing. Gene also belonged to the Native Sons of the Golden West, Guadalupe Parlor. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Gene was a solid provider and a strong leader for his family. He enjoyed being Papa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing and causing spirited chaos much to their delight.
Tweety was the beloved daughter of Joe and Cecelia Sanchez and Gene was the beloved son of Lyle and Veda Godfrey. Together with their parents, they formed a strong family foundation for which their family is forever grateful.
Gene and Tweety met while at Balboa High School and married in 1950. They had four loving and dedicated children, Cathy Mattias, Gary (Maureen) Godfrey, David Godfrey, and Diane (Greg) Weinkauf. They are survived by their adoring grandchildren, Katie (Nicky), Kimberly (Will), Mark, Sarah, Eric, David, Lauren, Gregory and Stella. They also leave behind four beloved great-grandchildren, Lilah, Poppy, Frankie and Luke. They are also survived by many other loving relatives and friends.
They are predeceased by their parents, son David Godfrey and son-in-law Jim Mattias.
We are forever grateful to their caregiver and friend, Nita Uhatafe who provided love, comfort and care to Tweety and Gene at their home. We are also grateful for the care provided by Dr. Michael Steinman and the SF VA, Noel Uminga from Kindred Home Care, Molly O’Brien, Miguela Yambao and the entire Kaiser Hospice team.
