Angels pitcher José Quintana was activated on the injured list on Monday after missing three weeks with a shoulder infection. But that doesn’t mean that it goes back into the starting rotation.

Instead, manager Joe Maddon said on Tuesday that Quintana will bullpen Bundy, Alex Cobb and Patrick Sandoval.

Sandoval had been Quintana’s replacement but was well placed enough (as a starter, he has a 3.13 ERA in six appearances) to convince the Angels to keep him in the rotation.

“We didn’t think it advisable to take Sandoval off the rotation,” said Maddon. “We spoke to Q a few days ago. Total team guy. Absolutely understand … He did it really well. “

Prior to his injury, Quintana had struggled his first nine starts of the season, his first year with the Angels after signing a $ 8 million one-year free agent contract this winter.

He was 0-3 with a 7.22 ERA in 33 2/3 innings. Despite 50 strikeouts, he also averaged more than 1.9 walks and hits per inning. Opponents beat .283 against him.

Quintana’s ERA, WHIP, and Opponent Average were all the worst careers.

Quintana had shown some signs of improvement, including a three-start course in May where he gave up just seven earned runs in 13 2/3 innings before ending a start in Oakland prematurely on May 30 with shoulder pain.

But how good Sandoval and the rest of the rotation have been lately – Angels starters competed Tuesday with the eleventh-best ERA (4.15) in the majors since early June – the Angels decided not to shake up the group.

Maddon said Quintana could be used in a variety of roles, including both “shorter spurts” and possibly the multi-inning middle relief spot that was cast by Chris Rodriguez before being voted for Double-A on Monday .

Maddon said it was possible that Quintana could get back into the rotation later this season as well.

“He still sees himself as a starter, but he doesn’t go out with a chip on his shoulder,” Maddon said, adding, “He’s not out there to be the long guy. I think you’re going to be a little because of that See the increase in speed. “
