Notre Dame-Salinas grad Addison Amaral has broken the single-season freshman school record for home runs for the University of Notre Dame softball team, after smacking her 10th last week.

The 19-year-old has put together an auspicious first season for the Fighting Irish, leading the team in homers, doubles (14) and runs batted in (52) through 48 starts.

Amaral is second on the team in batting average (.328), runs scored (32) and hits (50) for Notre Dame, who is 22-16 overall. Seven of her homers have come in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Herald’s Female Athlete of the Year last year while at Notre Dame-Salinas, Amaral was moved to second base this year, where she sports a .938 fielding percentage.

Amaral was a two-time member of The Herald’s all-county volleyball and softball teams, leading the Spirits to a Central Coast Section Division I softball title last spring.

Historic win for Stevenson sailing team

Stevenson is bringing home its first ever Silver Pacific Coast State sailing championship.

The foursome combined to outscore 25 other teams, beating runner-up and southern section power Mater Dei by four points at the Oakland Estuary in the San Francisco Bay.

Competing in 18 races, Sadie Marinerstein and Max McCormick combined their efforts to capture four A-fleet races.

Teammates Patrick O’Hara and Abbie Zhang added a pair of wins in the B-fleet competition to propel the Pirates to the top in the statewide competition.

Stevenson’s second team of Aaron Eagle, Tyler Hwang, Tibet Kilic, Claire Lee and Dillan Spence finished 15th overall.

Berring back on the baseball field

Having missed nine games with an injury, Palma grad JonJon Berring returned to the Santa Clara lineup with his 12th multiple-hit game of the season.

Despite his absence, the left-handed swinging Berring still leads the Broncos in hitting at .325, as well as stolen bases (14), doubles (10) and on-base percentage (.441).

The Palma product is second in home runs (7), runs scored (35) and walks (23) through 31 starts for Santa Clara. Berring also has 41 hits and 23 runs batted in.

Berring, who came into his senior year with three career collegiate home runs, has established career highs in runs scored and doubles in 21 fewer games to date.

A member of The Herald’s All-County football and baseball teams at Palma, he will be a candidate to be drafted in Major League Baseball’s July amateur draft.

Panziera providing power

True freshman Marley Panziera, a Salinas High grad, has started 28 games at second base for the UC Davis softball team, where she is second on the team in home runs with four.

Panziera has turned six of her 16 hits into extra bases this year, having driven in 12 runs, while hitting mostly in the No. 7 spot.

The second baseman sports a .963 fielding percentage, having handled 105 of 109 chances in the infield for UC Davis, which is 18-26 overall.

A part of two Salinas teams that reached the Central Coast Section divisional finals as a shortstop, Panziera was a member of The Herald’s All-County softball team.
