Plans for hundreds of new affordable housing units are now being promoted by the Santa Clara County Housing Authority. According to Mercury News, the agency is in the process of applying for approval from the City of San Jose to build 661 units on lots in the eastern part of downtown.

Upon completion, the development will span two adjacent lots, with the larger of the two locations on North 14th Street between East Santa Clara Street and East St. John Street. The other location is on the corner of East St. John Street and North 15th Street.

The first phase of the project will consist of 107 apartments known as Hawthorn Senior Apartments. The next two phases will run along East Santa Clara Street and are expected to include 95 apartments each.

Preston Prince, the new executive director of the Housing Authority, told Mercury News, “It’s an amazing website. This is a great location. It is close to San Jose State University, City Hall and two future BART stations. “

Prince says the project could begin construction sometime next year once final city approval and funding is in place. “We hope to be able to start building the first phase of affordable housing in 2022. This project is being driven forward. The houses will be 100% affordable, ”said Prince.

The agency had previously planned to move their headquarters to the location of the new affordable housing project, but they are now considering a proposal to move their headquarters to an office building in North San Jose at 3553 North First Street. The housing authority bought this property in December for $ 37.35 million.

It is still uncertain where the new headquarters will end up. “We’re still well on our way to moving into the office building by the middle of next year,” Prince told Mercury News. “That’s a pretty sizeable investment. The real estate costs in Santa Clara County are pretty high. “
