Jackie Speier to Open Exhibit Remembering San Mateo Residents Who Died from COVID-19 – CBS San Francisco

SAN MATEO (BCN) – Congressman Jackie Speier will open a week-long exhibition on Sunday to commemorate those who died of COVID-19 in San Mateo County.

The exhibition “In America: Remember” is inspired by an installation of more than 700,000 white flags by artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, which was placed on 20 acres on the National Mall in Washington, DC in September.

“Visiting the exhibition in DC was deeply moving and I want to bring that impact home to my district,” said Rep. Speier. “Suzanne Firstenberg managed to illustrate the extent of the pandemic tragedy.”

The event will take place on Sunday lunchtime at Leo J. Ryan Memorial Park, 969 E. Hillsdale Blvd. in the foster city. Speier is led by Foster City Mayor Sanjay Gehani, Dr. Grace Firtch from Kaiser Permanente and Pastor Paul Bains from WeHOPE.

There were 626 deaths in the county and 53,201 cases of COVID-19 in the county as of Nov. 7, according to the San Mateo County’s Department of Health. The district’s vaccination rate is over 90 percent.
