San Francisco (KGO) – There was another milestone in the reopening on Sunday when the iconic Grace Cathedral in San Francisco held its first mass in 14 months due to a coronavirus pandemic.

Coming back as a church was a moving moment for many.

Organ music echoed in the cathedral banner, but this time there was a person in the bank.

Relationship: Restricting California’s ability to elevate after a legal decision in the Church

“It feels a bit like a reunion, doesn’t it? It’s back to normal, ”said Regina Walton, a Grace parishioner.

Walton greeted the members.

Fourteen months after Grace was forced to close the door due to a pandemic, indoor personal worship was revived.

Video: Mountain Davidson Cross illuminates San Francisco for the 98th Easter

In 2020, Valerie Crane Dorfman spoke to her while watching a live stream of Grace’s Easter service from her home. For them, the return to the cathedral on Sunday was more than spiritual.

“I’m excited, emotional, and tearful. I feel the energy. It’s beautiful, ”said Dorfman.

Bishop Mark Andras got emotional and thanked the members who had stayed home during the pandemic.

“You have protected each other and your neighbors, you have literally saved lives,” said Bishop Andras.

Relationship: After June 15, CA will remove all capacity constraints and physical removal requirements

The service was still streamed live for those who are not used to coming back yet. However, those who came needed a face mask and social distance.

Only 200 people can enter the cathedral, which normally seats 2,000 people. Prior reservation was therefore required.

Grace had to close the door twice now. The first was during the 1918 Spanish flu, which resumed twice.

“I think this is a great celebration of the end of COVID,” said Stephen Bensch of Berkeley.

For many it was a return to Nob Hill.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – On Pentecost Sunday, the Christian Church’s birthday, the massive Grace Episcopal Cathedral on Nob Hill in San Francisco celebrated something of a rebirth and opened its doors to worshipers for the first time since the pandemic began.

There is a tradition at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco that the ornate Ghiberti front doors remain closed except on special occasions or when the bishop is visiting. On Sunday both conditions were met and the doors were wide open.

CONTINUE READING: Oakland Coliseum bulk vaccination facility closes after administration of more than 500,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses

Bishop Marc Andrus presided over Sunday Mass when the cathedral welcomed its congregation for the first time in more than 14 months.

“We saw it on Zoom every Sunday, but this is a great day to see everyone together,” said longtime parishioner Toye Moses. “God must be praised that we are alive today.”

During his sermon, the bishop thanked the people for their patience.

The bishop’s voice broke with emotion as he thanked the people for their patience.

“I am so thankful to you. You protected yourself and your neighbors. You literally saved lives, ”said Bishop Andurs.

CONTINUE READING: Residents evicted in 2-alarm fire in Oakland Apartment Building

The masks were kept on and the only singing came from the cathedral’s male choir, but just being in the building with its stained glass windows and high ceiling inspired a feeling you can’t get from Zoom.

“It’s great! And for me the spirit and the height of the building is a nice, strong feeling,” said Linda Rae Hardwick, who was visiting on Sunday.

That is the intention. The cavernous interior, the huge historical murals, the larger-than-life statues, says the bishop, they are all meant to make people feel small – to remind them that there is something bigger out there.

“Everything comes together in this building. It gives us a vision of harmony, beauty and space, which is important, the idea that there is a reality of love that is greater than us, greater than the problems we face, ”he explained.

After the service, the congregation reported outside to receive communion on the front steps. It may have been a safety precaution for COVID-19, but it was also a reminder that while you can get inspiration inside the church walls, you usually have to go outside to help others.

“A lot of people have been under great stress and stress this year,” said parishioner Alma Robinson. “We hope that we will be able to be a better community, then be a better country.”

On Sunday at 8:45 am, as part of its reopening ceremony, the church will present a special arts program in which images in honor of Pentecost and the month of heritage of the Asian and Pacific islanders will be projected onto the exterior facade of the cathedral.

WASHINGTON (CBS SF / AP) – House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi pushed back on Friday against Archbishop of San Francisco Salvatore Joseph Cordileone for his outspoken criticism of COVID-related restrictions on worship by California health officials.

Pelosi, a San Francisco Bay Area Catholic, said she missed going to Sunday mass but criticized the archbishop’s recent protest restrictions on larger public gatherings. She said he shouldn’t endanger people’s lives.

CONTINUE READING: San Jose teacher who deliberately coughed in baby’s face over distance argument for assault

“With all due respect to my Archbishop, I think we should pursue science in this regard,” Pelosi said.

Indoor services are currently banned in San Francisco and there is a strict 12-person limit for outdoor services.

The right to worship has become a touchstone in the debate over state and local rules to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Archbishop Cordileone said the rights of worshipers were “wrongly suppressed” by the government. Several churches nationwide are suing to stop restrictions.

“We recognize that the government has the right to make adequate public health regulations,” he wrote in the Washington Post. “But when the government asserts authority over the church’s right to worship, it is crossing a line.”

Pelosi said she recently attended an outdoor personal service in San Francisco and received communion – she picked up the waffle from the priest as allowed instead of having it put directly on her tongue. She regularly joins online services.

CONTINUE READING: COVID Vaccines: CDC recommends resuming Johnson & Johnson Shot use after a break over blood clots

The San Francisco Bay Area Democrat said she had to register in advance to attend and found that about a dozen people had spread by the time she arrived.

“Very, very, very far apart,” she said.

She asked if the archbishop’s message had been misunderstood.

“I’m sure he must have meant if it is scientifically safe, rather than endangering people’s health, if they want to go to church,” she said.

Pelosi noted that belief and science are sometimes at odds.

“Here people say to me: You are a person of faith, why do you believe in science?” She said.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court tells California that it cannot enforce coronavirus-related restrictions that limit religious worship at home, including Bible studies and prayer meetings.

The court’s order on late Friday is the last in a series of cases where the Supreme Court prevented officials from enforcing some coronavirus-related restrictions on religious gatherings.

CONTINUE READING: Despite the short-term decline in vaccine supply, state officials predict a full reopening by the summer

Five Conservative judges agreed that California’s restrictions on religious gatherings at home should be lifted for the time being, while the court’s three Liberals and Chief Justice John Roberts did not.

However, California has already announced significant changes that will ease the restrictions on gatherings that go into effect on April 15th. The changes come after the state’s infection rates drop.

The case before the judges related to California rules that most states limit indoor social gatherings to no more than three households. Participants must wear masks and be physically separated from each other. Different restrictions apply to places like schools, grocery stores, and churches.

“California treats some similar secular activities more favorably than home religious practice,” allowing hair salons, retail stores, and movie theaters, among other things, “to bring together more than three households at once,” the court’s unsigned order said. A lower court “did not conclude that these activities pose a lower risk of transmission than the domestic religious practice proposed by the applicants,” it said.

The court admitted that California assembly policy will change next week, but said the restrictions will remain in place until then and that “officials with a track record of moving the goalposts retain the power to reinstate these tightened restrictions at any time”.

CONTINUE READING: San Francisco nightlife is recovering as pandemic restrictions ease

Judge Elena Kagan wrote in a dissent for herself and her liberal counterparts, Justice Stephen Breyer and Justice Sonia Sotomayor, that the majority of the court compromised the ability of state officials to address a public health emergency.

“California limits religious meetings in private homes to three households. Even though the state restricts all secular home gatherings to three households, it has adhered to the first amendment. And the state does just that: it has put a blanket restriction on gatherings of all kinds at home, both religious and secular. California doesn’t have to … treat religious meetings at home the same way it does hardware stores and hair salons, ”she wrote. She added that “the law does not require the state to treat apples and watermelons equally”.

The case before the judges involved two residents of Santa Clara County, San Francisco Bay Area, who wish to hold small face-to-face Bible studies in their homes. California had defended its policy of restricting social gatherings as “completely neutral”.

The court has looked into a number of cases where religious groups have cracked down on coronavirus restrictions affecting worship services. At the beginning of the pandemic, the court sided with state officials over the objection from religious groups. This changed after the death of the liberal judiciary Ruth Bader Ginsburg last September and its replacement by the conservative judiciary Amy Coney Barrett.

In November, the New York Supreme Court banned the enforcement of certain restrictions on visiting churches and synagogues in areas identified as affected by the virus. And in February, the California Supreme Court said it could not ban indoor services because of the coronavirus pandemic, although it did allow a ban on singing and singing indoors for the time being.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – Hundreds of worshipers gathered at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco despite California’s COVID-19 health ordinance banning indoor services. The archbishop said a threat of violence prompted the move.

It was a strange sight in the middle of our pandemic when hundreds of believers gathered in the church for a special Saturday mass in front of the West Coast Walk for Life.

COVID-19 IN CA: The map shows which districts can be reopened in the order they stay home

The state’s COVID-19 health ordinance allows small outdoor services, but has banned all indoor worship.

“It’s wonderful to have mass inside. I know we’re not allowed to, but we’re very safe,” said parishioner Kennedy Ching.

“We had every plan, every intention, to hold mass outdoors,” said Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone.

RELATED: “They Mock God”: Archbishop of San Francisco leads march to protest COVID-19 worship regulations

San Francisco Catholic Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said a security threat caused him to move the service inside. This is due to violence that can be traced back to an alleged protest and a counter-protest next door at the Chinese consulate.

“One group that was part of the capital storm, another left-wing group,” said the archbishop.

We saw a large police presence in front of the consulate on Saturday. Dozens of officers were also stationed around St. Mary’s Cathedral.

In a statement to ABC7 News, SFPD said, “There were no specific threats to the Church. Our presence was a precautionary measure to the safety of everyone in the area.”

“So it was a compromise between an extra step of caution and the safety of people because of the threat of violence,” said Cordileone.

Cordileone was an outspoken critic of the indoor worship ban.

“To me, it’s unjust and unconstitutional,” he said.

The archbishop plans to hold smaller indoor church services with security measures in the future.
