IHSS workers comprise a large portion of California’s direct care workforce which currently outnumbers every single occupation in California. Demand for quality in-home care and supportive services will keep growing as California’s over-65 population is projected to reach 8.6 million – 1 in 5 residents – by 2030 with an 88% increase in older adults with self-care limitations.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Plumbers recommend dripping your faucets and covering outdoor pipes this week if you want to avoid a costly repair bill.

While breaks and bursts aren’t expected to be widespread like last year’s freeze, the plumbing industry in general still struggles with staffing shortages.

“In general, there’s just not enough plumbers,” said Brad Casebier, CEO of Radiant Plumbing and Air Conditioning.

Significant ice storm coming: Timing, ice totals, and impacts

Last year’s winter storm exacerbated the problem.

“Last year there weren’t enough plumbers in the whole state — maybe even in the nation — to fix everything in Texas,” Casebier said. “It was so bad.”

That’s when Jennifer Barborka was making repairs all across Austin during the second year of her apprenticeship with Local 286 Plumbers and Pipefitters.

“The copper all busted, so we were in there burning it together. The first night was about 16 hours,” she said.

Local 286 gained traction after last year’s winter storm. The group’s training director Joe Cooper said 154 new apprentices enrolled in 2021. Prior to that, a standard year would only bring in about 80.

Additionally, thanks to funding secured by Workforce Solutions Capital Area, it was one of the spots able to offer $200 grants as part of an incentive program launched after last year’s winter storm. While those original funds expired, another round of similar funding is in the works.

According to trade-industry data from Workforce Solutions Capital Area KXAN has previously reported, 3,000 more trade workers, including plumbers, are needed to meet the demand.

Cooper also said he anticipates the class numbers to grow as outreach to high schools continues.

“We’ve tried to expand our apprenticeships quite a bit. Bringing in a lot of young folks, trying to get into the skilled trades,” said Cooper.

Skilled employees don’t just need to enter the workforce to fix the staffing problem — they need to stay in it.

Casebier said Radiant makes retention a priority by “making it the best place to work,” he said.

We asked what comes with that — whether it be financial incentives or a positive work culture.

“Money is a part of it, but everybody pays pretty similarly, it’s more about culture and how you take care of your people,” he said.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/AP) — San Francisco-based Airbnb will allow its employees to live and work almost anywhere around the world, fully embracing a remote work policy to attract staff and ensure flexibility.

The San Francisco short-term stay company said late Thursday that under the new policy, employees can work from the office, home or during their travels to 170 countries.

Staff will still have to meet in person for regular team meetings and events, CEO Brian Chesky said in a message to employees. Salaries won’t change if employees decide to move.

Employees can spend up to three months working in each country they visit every year but they will still need a permanent address for tax and payroll reasons, which involves a “mountain of complexities,” but Chesky said the company is working on an open-source solutions.

The new policy will put the company in a better position to hire and retain the best people by not “limiting the talent pool to a commuting radius around our offices,” Chesky said. Remote work and flexibility “will become the predominant way that we all work 10 years from now,” he said.

Millions of people switched to working remotely during the pandemic to limit potential exposure to COVID-19. Companies are beginning to ask those workers to come back to the office, at least on a hybrid basis, including other tech companies such as Facebook parent Meta and Microsoft.

Think tank Joint Venture Silicon Valley says workplace flexibility is going to be the new norm.

“The interesting shift is that this has come to be classified now as a worker right — not a privilege but a right. In other words, it’s a perk that has come to be expected and I think the world is just going to be organized that way,” said President and CEO Russell Hancock.

“There will be ripple effects in the economy. We’ll see that in the corporate kitchens, we’ll see that in the other corporate services that used to be provided on a full-time basis, now they’re only being provided on an occasional basis,” Hancock said.

Small businesses may struggle to get foot traffic.

This week the San Francisco Controller’s Office released a report that found that more than 20 percent of office space is sitting empty in the city, up from 7% in January 2020.

Jonathan Perez of Emeryville currently works from home for a for-profit education institution.

“If I’m getting paid the lifestyle of San Francisco — which is a high lifestyle — and I could move to the Midwest and get paid a really nice job, salary and then buy a house in the Midwest,” he said. “So it would actually incentivize me to maybe not live here because it’s very expensive here.”

Rita Gilliland is visiting San Francisco from Houston where she’s already spotted a lot of California license plates around town.

“If you’re the person moving from California — yeah, absolutely it’s good for you. Cost of living is significantly different in Houston,” she said. “So anybody who’s coming from California to Houston, if they’re going to have their same pay, they’re going to be doing pretty well. So it’s probably a good perk for them.”

The city of Santa Monica is moving towards requiring its city workers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine once it is cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This decision is part of the City of Santa Monica’s commitment to protecting the health of its residents, customers, and employees. The move comes as Los Angeles County sees a sharp surge in cases and other government organizations are implementing similar guidelines, including Pasadena, San Francisco, New York City, the state of California, and the US Department of Veterans Affairs. As officials, rescue workers, and first responders, this will bring the Santa Monica workforce together with leading medical organizations, cities, and public institutions across the country.

“Just as the city of Santa Monica is often a strong role model in local government, we do everything we can to ensure the well-being of our Santa Monica community and the city’s dedicated people,” said interim city manager John Jalili. “Vaccination is the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and any vaccination will make a measurable difference in our recovery.”

The city will meet with the workers’ organizations representing the city’s diverse workforce to discuss the implications of a mandatory vaccination policy.
