Unsurprisingly, people are still moving to Austin, Texas. More surprisingly, people are also moving to San Francisco.

Over the last 12 months, San Francisco has seen the second-biggest worker population gain of any area in the United States, according to LinkedIn. The January data, which measures when people update their locations in their profiles, showed that for every 100,000 LinkedIn users, 83 moved to San Francisco in the last 12 months. The workers largely came from Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Washington DC.

Where people are moving to — and leaving — has huge repercussions for the financial success of those cities and what industries can thrive there. Remote work bore the promise that high-paying jobs could spread from superstar coastal cities like New York and San Francisco to more affordable and economically struggling Heartland areas. To some extent, that’s happened, but the new data from LinkedIn shows the pull of major cities could still be strong, even ones hard-hit by the pandemic.

The data represents a significant shift in population trends for San Francisco, which hadn’t seen notable net gains in LinkedIn’s data since 2017. The San Francisco metropolitan area had some of the biggest population declines from 2020 to 2021, losing more than 125,000 residents, according to the latest available Census data.

One of the reasons for the decline was a lack of affordable housing, which meant that even tech workers with six-figure salaries couldn’t afford to live there. When the pandemic hit, the Bay Area’s high concentration of people working in remote-friendly tech jobs made it so that many could leave to seek cheaper and greener pastures. Other reasons to leave maybe include high rates of homelessness and income inequality the area is facing, although it’s also likely that reports of an urban hellscape in San Francisco might have been overstated.

Indeed, more people are now coming to San Francisco than leaving. By the end of last year, nearly two people were coming to the metropolitan area for every one that left (LinkedIn wasn’t able to provide the net change in area members since the start of the pandemic). The area was still bested by Austin, where prices are still relatively cheaper and where there’s no income tax, but that’s been the case for years now.

Why are people moving to San Francisco? In some sense, it’s a matter of popular cities continuing to be popular. That means people still find value and jobs there. The Bay Area is culturally rich, with people — and culture and food — from around the world. While tech companies have been cutting back on hiring lately, the area is still the home base to their giant and lucrative businesses, meaning there’s still plenty of opportunity for workers.

There’s reason to believe that people aren’t just moving back to San Francisco because they want to. The move back also represents a solidification of remote work policies, in which many companies have come down on the side of hybrid work, where people are still expected in the office some of the time. In other words, people who may have wanted to move elsewhere permanently have been forced back to the Bay Area, though perhaps in different locations than they had been.

The decision to return to the Bay Area could also come from employees who are hoping to put in face time with their bosses ahead of a potential recession. Studies have shown that bosses view people who work in the offices more favorably and are more likely to consider them for promotion.

Even still, it only looks like people are going into the office some of the time. Offices in San Francisco and nearby areas have some of the lowest office occupancy rates in the country, according to data from Kastle, which provides building-access swipe cards to companies across the country and thus has visibility into when people go to the office. During the week of December 29 to January 4, office occupancy was about 20 percent of pre-pandemic levels there, while the national average was 33 percent.

Rather than leave cities, many people have moved to more suburban areas, where home rental prices are more affordable. They might still have to commute to the office, but a longer commute doesn’t seem as bad if they only have to do it a few days a week. On average, office workers are expected to continue working from home an average of 2.3 days per week, according to a December survey of employer plans post-pandemic by WFH Research.

The LinkedIn data, of course, only includes people who update their profiles, so it’s limited in its scope to professionals who stay up-to-date on their LinkedIn profiles. A reversal in population decline hasn’t yet shown up in other data sources, but lagging data from the US Postal Service does show a lot fewer people are leaving the San Francisco Bay Area than had been earlier in the pandemic. The number of people leaving San Francisco based on the number of change of address forms filed in the city declined to 12,000 last year, down from about 48,000 in 2020 and 18,000 in 2021, according to change of address data from the US Postal Service collected by Riordan Frost, senior research analyst at Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies.

“It’s fair to say there’s some recovery happening in terms of people moving there,” Frost told Recode.

California as a whole saw more people leave the state than enter in 2022, with a deficit of 343,000, but that was down from nearly 500,000 net people leaving in 2021. County-level Census data for 2022 will be out in March, but so far there’s only visibility through 2021.

Perhaps all of this represents a natural middle ground, as people try to find both a better quality of life and opportunity. For many, that might once again be in the suburbs outside big cities.

Most news outlets make their money through advertising or subscriptions. But when it comes to what we’re trying to do at Vox, there are a couple reasons that we can’t rely only on ads and subscriptions to keep the lights on.

First, advertising dollars go up and down with the economy. We often only know a few months out what our advertising revenue will be, which makes it hard to plan ahead.

Second, we’re not in the subscriptions business. Vox is here to help everyone understand the complex issues shaping the world — not just the people who can afford to pay for a subscription. We believe that’s an important part of building a more equal society. We can’t do that if we have a paywall.

WEISSE SOX 5, ROTE SOX 4

NATIONALE 2, PADRES 0

Not surprisingly, people are still moving to Austin, Texas. Even more surprising is that people are also moving to San Francisco.

In the last 12 months, San Francisco has seen the second-largest increase in the labor force of any area in the United States, according to LinkedIn. January data, which measures when people update their locations on their profiles, showed that out of 100,000 LinkedIn users, 83 have moved to San Francisco in the last 12 months. The workers came mostly from Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth and Washington DC.

Where people move – and move away – has a huge impact on the financial success of those cities and what industries can thrive there. Remote work promised high-paying jobs could spread from superstar coastal cities like New York and San Francisco to more affordable and economically troubled heartland areas. To an extent, that has happened, but new data from LinkedIn shows that the pull of big cities could still be strong even if they’ve been hit hard by the pandemic.

The data represents a significant shift in population trends for San Francisco, which had not seen any notable net gains in LinkedIn data since 2017. The San Francisco metropolitan area had some of the largest population declines from 2020-2021, losing more than 125,000 residents. according to the latest available census data.

One of the reasons for the decline was the lack of affordable housing, which meant even tech workers with six-figure salaries couldn’t afford to live there. When the pandemic hit, the Bay Area’s high concentration of people working in remote tech jobs meant many were able to move away in search of cheaper and greener pastures. Other reasons for abandonment may include the high levels of homelessness and income inequality the area faces, although it’s also likely that reports of an urban hellscape in San Francisco were exaggerated.

In fact, more people now come to San Francisco than leave. By the end of last year, almost two people were coming into the metro area for every one that left (LinkedIn was unable to provide the net change in the area’s members since the pandemic began). The area has still been surpassed by Austin, where prices are still relatively cheaper and where there is no income tax, but has been for years now.

Why are people moving to San Francisco? In a way, it’s about popular cities continuing to be popular. That means people can still find value and jobs there. The Bay Area is culturally rich, with people – and culture and food – from all over the world. While tech companies are hiring less recently, the area is still the home base of their massive and lucrative companies, meaning there are still plenty of opportunities for workers.

There’s reason to believe that people don’t come back to San Francisco just because they want to. The retreat also represents a solidification of remote working policies, with many companies siding with hybrid work, where employees are still expected to be in the office at times. In other words, people who might have wanted to move permanently elsewhere have been pushed back into the Bay Area, albeit perhaps in different places than before.

The decision to return to the Bay Area could also come from employees hoping to strike up a conversation with their bosses ahead of a possible recession. Studies have shown that bosses view people who work in offices more favorably and are more likely to consider them for promotion.

Still, it only looks like people are going to the office intermittently. Offices in San Francisco and the surrounding area have some of the lowest office occupancy rates in the country, according to data from Kastle, which provides building access cards to businesses across the country and thus has a view of when people are going into the office. In the week of December 29 to January 4, office occupancy there was about 20 percent of pre-pandemic levels, while the national average was 33 percent.

Instead of leaving the cities, many people have moved to suburban areas where apartment rental prices are cheaper. They may still have to commute to the office, but a longer commute doesn’t seem so bad if they only have to commute a few days a week. Office workers are expected to work from home an average of 2.3 days a week, according to a December survey by WFH Research into employer plans after the pandemic.

Of course, LinkedIn data only includes people who update their profiles, so it’s scope is limited to professionals staying up to date on their LinkedIn profiles. A reversal of the population decline has yet to show up in other data sources, but delayed U.S. Postal Service data shows far fewer people are leaving the San Francisco Bay Area than when the pandemic began. The number of people leaving San Francisco, based on the number of change-of-address forms filed in the city, fell to 12,000 last year, from about 48,000 in 2020 and 18,000 in 2021, according to change-of-address data collected by the US Postal Service Riordan Frost, senior research analyst at the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies.

“It’s fair to say that the people who are moving there are recovering somewhat,” Frost told Recode.

Across California, more people left the state than entered in 2022, with a deficit of 343,000, but that was down from nearly 500,000 net people in 2021. County-level census data for 2022 will be released in March, but so far Visible only until 2021

Perhaps all of this represents a natural middle ground as people seek to find both better quality of life and opportunities. For many, that might be back in the suburbs outside of the big cities.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson will not return to the Toronto Argonauts, reports TSN’s Farhan Lalji.

After leading the Argonauts to the Gray Cup last season, Bethel-Thompson will spend the 2023 season with the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers.

Lalji reported earlier this month that Bethel-Thompson had informed the Argonauts that he planned to play football in 2023, but whether or not that was in the CFL had yet to be decided.

Toronto head coach Ryan Dinwiddie kept the quarterback on contract last week and would give his decision a deadline.

Bethel-Thompson had a career season at Double Blue in 2022. The San Francisco native threw for a career-high 4,731 yards, 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The fourth-year boatman completed 19 passes for 299 and two touchdowns in the Argos’ 34-27 win over the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern Final.

Bethel-Thompson left the 109th Gray Cup against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with a dislocated thumb. Rookie Chad Kelly took over quarterback duties for the crucial third quarter at Regina. The 34-year-old threw 203 yards before retiring.

Bethel-Thompson, a two-time Gray Cup champion with the Argonauts (2017, 2022), has thrown for 13,261 yards, 70 touchdowns and 49 interceptions in 79 career CFL games.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — At the end of a 17-plus minute Zoom media session Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo stopped, looked into the camera and delivered what was unmistakably a farewell message to Niners fans.

“It’s been a hell of a ride,” Garoppolo said to the 49ers fans. “I love you guys. See ya.”

With that, Garoppolo rose from his seat and walked into an uncertain future that almost certainly will end with him playing for another team in 2022. Not long before, general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan largely deflected questions about what comes next for Garoppolo.

Shanahan and Lynch spoke at length about the end of the season — which came after Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams — being too fresh to have a definitive answer on where they go from here. They promised to communicate with Garoppolo every step of the way and went into detail about how they have the finance wherewithal to keep Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance next season if that’s something they want to explore.

“If we knew exactly what was happening, we would have told Jimmy,” Shanahan said. “But this season just ended and we’ve got a great, young quarterback who was a rookie and we have a great quarterback here who is a veteran. … I’ve got the ultimate respect for Jimmy and I’m very excited About Trey. That’s where we’re at right now.

2 Related

“So, we’re in a situation where we’ve got to make some tough decisions that won’t be easy. But I’m happy about that. That means you’ve got the best scenario going and that’s why we’ve got to put a lot of thought into this. And Jimmy will know everything as we go.”

Nobody should have expected Shanahan or Lynch to go into detail about the plan to try to maintain some sense of leverage. But when Garoppolo took his turn, he left little in the way of gray area.

Garoppolo expects to be traded, hopes to have a say in where he lands and knows what he wants in his next organization.

“I was talking to John yesterday about finding the right destination and whatever the future holds, just doing it the right way,” Garoppolo said. “I’ve got a long career ahead of me. I’m excited about it. I’m excited about the opportunities to come. I just want to go to a place where they want to win. That’s really what I’m in I’m here to play football, win football games and as long as I’ve got that and good people around me, I think the rest will take care of itself.”

An exact timeline for a potential Garoppolo trade remains to be seen, but there are plenty of reasons to believe it will be a priority to be done by the time the new league year starts on March 16. Garoppolo is scheduled to count $26.905 million against San Francisco’s salary cap in 2022. Moving on from him would save the team $25.505 million with just $1.4 million in dead money remaining from the signing bonus on the contract he signed in 2017.

The Niners will need that space to re-sign many of their own key players, including wide receiver Deebo Samuel and defensive end Nick Bosa, both of whom are under contract but are priorities to sign to lucrative extensions this offseason, something Lynch acknowledged Tuesday.

Any place Garoppolo lands would still have to take on more than $25 million in cap charges, which is why he would likely be in line for a contract extension wherever he is traded. And though Garoppolo technically still has a no-trade clause, it expires when the new league year begins, which is also when any trade could officially be completed.

“As far as the whole trade situation, John has been very clear with it,” Garoppolo said. “I think they’re trying to do the best for me, I’m trying to do the best for them and we’re working together. We haven’t really made too much progress on it, but I think things will start happening here pretty quickly.”

Another thing that will happen in the near future is a diagnosis on Garoppolo’s injured right thumb. Garoppolo played the final five games (including playoffs) with a torn ligament suffered in the Dec. 23 loss to the Tennessee Titans. He plans to see a specialist this week to determine whether he will need surgery.

“If I can avoid surgery, that’s really what I’m hoping for, but we’ll see,” Garoppolo said.

Garoppolo also praised Lance, his presumptive replacement. Garoppolo said Lance is “as talented as it comes” and complimented the rookie for how well he learned a voluminous playbook. On Monday, Lance offered similar plaudits to Garoppolo.

“Everyone put us against each other and everything like that in the media throughout this whole year, OTAs, everything, but he’s been nothing but a big brother to me,” Lance said. “He’s been nothing but great to me and I have nothing but just thankfulness for him and everything he’s done and how he’s handled everything. He’s going to be one of my best friends for my whole entire life.”

The speculation on where Garoppolo lands next will kick into overdrive in the coming weeks. There is no shortage of teams — Pittsburgh, Washington, New Orleans, Denver and Tampa Bay, among others — who figure to be in the market for a quarterback.

Depending on how things play out with others like Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, Garoppolo could be one of the most accomplished quarterbacks available.

No matter how it officially ends, Garoppolo believes it will be a good thing for all involved.

“We’ve done right by each other just throughout this whole relationship,” Garoppolo said. “We’ll work it out one way or another. I don’t know how exactly that will work, but I think both sides will be happy in the end.”

Four teams at Mountain West have a winning streak of six or more games. Colorado State (with eight wins), Utah State, Wyoming, and Air Force have all put together winning streaks that will lead them to the top of Mountain West. In total, these four schools have won 26 games in a row, placing them all at the top of the conference rankings.

It’s been one of the best starts to the conference as a whole in a while, but some of the competition these teams have faced have been beaten. Anyway, winning is better than losing. Let’s see how the teams in Mountain West do on this week’s leaderboard:

1) Colorado state

After their tournament victory in the Virgin Islands, the Rams are still in first place with two wins. The Colorado state offensive continues to lead the way as they scored 88 and 86 points on both wins last week, respectively. Their schedule starts this week with a home game at St. Mary’s and some SEC teams, Mississippi State, and Alabama showing up later this month.

2) State of Utah

The Aggies also impress after their home defeat on the premiere night. Justin Bean now leads Mountain West with 22.6 points per game and rebound with 12.9 points per game. Easy wins for the Aggies over UT-Arlington and Carroll College. Utah State has a big test tonight when they host St. Mary’s. A win over the Gaels could be key to bringing the Aggies back to the NCAA tournament for a third time.

3) Wyoming

One of the nicest surprises that year at Mountain West was the Wyoming Cowboys 6-0. With the help of Hunter Maldonado (19.4 PPG) and Graham Ike (18.8 PPG), the Cowboys joined the Rams as the only undefeated teams in Mountain West. They’re hosting Denver and McNeese State this weekend tonight and have a great chance of finishing 8-0 ahead of their Arizona road trip next week.

4) State of San Diego

Without question, the Aztecs have played the toughest schedule of any team in Mountain West to date. At 5-2, it’s not time to worry too much about San Diego State’s inconsistencies on the offensive. Their losses to BYU and USC aren’t bad losses and they stand a chance of claiming a big win against Michigan on Saturday. Expect the Aztecs to click once the game starts in Mountain West and pose a huge threat to challenge Colorado State.

5) Fresno State

Last week the Bulldogs lost their first game of the season away to California, but they had a nice neutral win against Santa Clara, so it’s been a decent week for the state of Fresno. A dominant win against San Diego this week puts them back on the winning side with a street game against the unbeaten San Francisco. The state of Fresno tops Mountain West with an average of 57 points this season.

6) Air Force

The Falcons continue to win and continue to impress 6-1. You already have more victories than last season (5) and have the opportunity to get more victories before the end of the new year. They’re hosting the Army this weekend and have a couple of street games before being tested in their first Mountain West game of the year against the state of Utah.

7) Nevada

After the start, the wolf pack had three wins in a row with 1-4. Double-digit wins against George Mason, Washington and Pepperdine were all encouraging games for Nevada after a difficult start. They have two tough street games in Texas when they face North Texas on Saturday and UT Arlington next week. Grant Sherfield has scored more than 20 points in the last three games and his performance will be critical to Nevada’s success for the remainder of the season.

8) New Mexico

The Lobos topped the century mark in their grand win against state rivals New Mexico earlier this week. They’re playing them back at The Pit next week. This could give the Lobos a big boost after a heavy loss to Towson at the Las Vegas Invitational. Both Jamal Mashburn Jr. (20.4 PPG) and Jaelen House (18.4 PPG) are the top 10 of the conference in the scoring. That duo will be important to the Lobos this season and how successful Richard Pitino is in his freshman year.

The Broncos fell back in the rankings after a 46-39 home loss to CSU Bakersfield after entering the game as a double-digit favorite. from the free throw line. It has been hard for the Broncos without a Derrick Alston Jr.-type scorer to find consistency on offense, but given that they have played against a good Saint Louis team, hopes the Broncos will turn things around as soon as conference play begins.

10) UNLV

The Runnin ‘Rebels have lost four of their last five games 3-0 since the start. Her only win on this route is against Division III Whittier College. A blowout loss at home to UCLA and a tough showing in their first real street game at SMU have brought the scarlet and gray down the ladder this week. The unbeaten San Francisco is just around the corner and UNLV will have to improve defensively and find some consistency on the offensive if they want to finish well at Mountain West.

11) San Jose State

The Spartans are a 500-a-side basketball team after their first six games, which is a great sign of a program looking to build positive momentum. The state of San Jose has some games against high quality WCC teams later this month that could prepare them for the game at Mountain West and show if they can fight for some conference game wins this year.

BALTIMORE (AP) – Let a SoCal man describe what happens to his NoCal team.

“It’s just tubular,” said A’s mug Cole Irvin.

CONTINUE READING: Little brother’s battle with rare diseases inspired the Harvard-bound San Jose High School student

The Oakland Athletics celebrated their 12th straight win on Friday night – the club’s longest winning streak in nearly two decades – and beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1.

Irvin of Anaheim, California paused in the sixth inning to keep the A going.

Oakland’s string is the longest since winning a franchise record of 20 in a row in 2002. It is the third-longest streak in athletics since moving to Oakland in 1968 and the longest of the majors since Houston’s 12-game run of 6. -18. June 2018.

Ramón Laureano scored for homer and Irvin won for the first time in almost two straight years as the A’s improved to 13-1 since losing their first six games.

“We’re absolutely into this and we’re having a lot of fun,” said Irvin. “Even when we were doing this little six-game skid, there was no panic in the locker room. In the past few years I’ve seen that it definitely encompasses a room. The boys were more together in those six games.

“At the moment the mood is really now. You are high. We’re enjoying riding the wave right now, ”he said.

Baltimore has lost seven of its eight home games.

Irvin (2-2) had recently won two starts in a row, his first two career starts for Philadelphia in May 2019. After finishing six innings against Detroit on Saturday, he was able to hamper the Orioles for five innings. But Baltimore stitched together four singles in the sixth that were capped by Pedro Severino’s RBI single to end Irvin’s night.

Reliever Yusmeiro Petit then pulled the next two thugs back to strand the loaded bases. Petit has only allowed one run of 10 innings in his last nine appearances.

“Again the key to the game,” said Oakland manager Bob Melvin. “We saw him, I don’t know how often. It’s not an easy thing, especially if you don’t throw 98 mph, you don’t have a wipeout, strikeout pitch. He is just very aware of what thugs like and dislike and just puts it out of reach. “

Irvin allowed eight hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings. He turned down six.

Jake Diekman worked ninth to make his second save in as many tries.

CONTINUE READING: The audit found that Oakland was not adequately prepared for the rise of homeless camps

The Orioles were 2 for 9 with runners in the scoring position, leaving 10 men on the base.

“We had chances,” said Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde. “We had an opportunity in the first inning and an opportunity with loaded bases in the sixth. I just didn’t get the big hit. We have to move the ball with runners in the goal position. We kick out too often. “

Oakland marked Baltimore starter Jorge López for two runs in the second inning. The first two batters of the inning went and both were moving on a wild field. Seth Browns Grounder scored the first run and Stephen Piscotty followed with an RBI single.

Laureano pursued López (1-3) with a solo shot and led the fifth. López allowed three runs and five hits while scoring every fourth inning.

TRAINING ROOM

Athletics: OF Mark Canha was off the line-up for the first time this season but is expected to play on Saturday. “He’s maybe a little under the weather,” said Melvin. “Nothing to do with COVID or anything. I just feel a little funky today. “… Melvin said LHP AJ Puk (flexed biceps) had been shut down for a few days, but will probably throw again before the end of the weekend. … INF / OF Chad Pinder (sprained left knee) started running progression on Wednesday but has yet to resume full baseball activities.

Orioles: LHP John Means (1-0, 1.52 ERA) gets an additional day off and starts the series finale on Sunday. Means threw seven innings on his last outing in Texas on Sunday.

CAMDEN YARDS ADDS COVID-19 CHECK

Camden Yards began voluntary COVID-19 testing for fans on Friday as part of a partnership between the club and the Maryland Department of Health. Free PCR testing will be offered in the lower hall of Camden Yards each game day between the opening of the gates and either 2½ hours after the first pitch or the start of the eighth inning, whichever comes first. The Orioles do not need to be tested to enter the stadium.

NEXT

Athletics: RHP Chris Bassitt (1-2, 4.43 ERA), who is 2.18 in three career starts against Baltimore 2-0, receives the nod as the three-game series continues.

Orioles: Hyde said the Orioles will either play a bullpen game or add a starter from the team’s alternative training location on Saturday.
