William Drewis, resident of South San Francisco William Drewis, 85, died January 20, 2012, at Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, with his family by his side. He was under the compassionate care of Dr. Mary Brzostowicz, to whom we are eternally grateful.

William was born on February 17, 1926 in San Francisco to Herman Drewis and Mabel Olson. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army's 615th Armored Regiment from April 29, 1944 to August 11, 1946.
William worked as an aircraft mechanic for United Airlines for 33 years and was a lifelong resident of South San Francisco. He was a careful craftsman, a world traveler, an expert bowler and a great music lover. He will be fondly remembered for his gentle wit and kindness, for his renditions of Frank Sinatra songs and, most of all, for his love and devotion as a husband, father and grandfather.

William is survived by his wife, Elise; two sons and their spouses, Dale and Janet Drewis and Marc and Vivian Drewis; his five grandchildren, Dane, Deena, Janel, Matthew and Heather Drewis; and his step-granddaughter, Mandi Kaiser.

Bill was born on May 11, 1935 to William and Hilda Boitano in San Francisco. Bill attended Marin Catholic High School, where he made lifelong friends and was a proud sophomore. Throughout his career, Bill has worked as a buyer in the plumbing and heating industry. He proudly served in the US Air Force where he developed a love for airplanes. Upon returning to Marin County, Bill met and married the love of his life, Marlene, and raised two children. He took great pride in coaching Little League baseball for many years along with his son Ken. Bill is survived by his loving wife Marlene Boitano at sixty, his son Ken Boitano, his daughter Debbie Boitano Macchello (Gerry) and his adored only grandchild John William Boitano. He is also survived by brother James Boitano, and his father, mother, and sister Deanna preceded him in death. Bill was a devoted husband, father and nonno. He was very proud of his Genoese heritage and loved all things Italian. He and Marlene enjoyed an active social life, including attending weekly masses at St. Isabella’s Church, playing league bocce, playing sports, watching the SF Giants, family dinners, and being the family handyman who was able to fix almost anything. Bill’s fondest memories were of his grandson’s vacations, barbecues and sporting events. Most of all, Bill appreciated spending time with his family, who meant the world to him. Bill is sorely missed from the many lives he touched and will never be forgotten. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Isabella’s Church in San Rafael, California. A private funeral will follow at a later date. The family is asking for donations in Bill’s memory to a charity of their choice.

The center was named in honor and recognition of the William K. Bowes, Jr. Foundation’s $46.4 million donation, which represents the largest capital donation ever made to a music school; the foundation’s namesake was a longtime SFCM supporter and trustee. The SFCM’s Ann Getty Center at 50 Oak Street, home of the conservatory since 2006, is within walking distance. The Bowes Center creates housing for up to 420 students. The building also includes 27 rent-stabilized apartments that will upgrade and replace existing units from the site’s previous building for its previous tenants.

Cavagnero’s design emphasizes openness, commitment and light through its white and transparent glass exterior. Filled with sights and sounds of music, the Bowes Center invites passers-by at this busy intersection to watch performances through floor-to-ceiling windows in its jewel-box Cha Chi Ming Recital Hall on the ground floor.
Building on the company’s innovations in the design of SFJAZZ, Cavagnero’s design for Bowes achieves the transparency of a glass façade while exceeding its stringent acoustic requirements. To achieve a cohesive design language while meeting exacting acoustic requirements that vary from floor to floor, with a mix of performance, practice, recording and living spaces throughout the twelve floors, and made more complex by adjacent Van Ness Avenue —Cavagnero’s team designed a custom curtain wall system that integrates all acoustic requirements into a seamless envelope. Working with Kirkegaard Associates, Tipping Structural Engineers and cladding manufacturer CS Erectors, Cavagnero has pushed the boundaries of how glass can perform at high acoustic levels. The design uses double-glazed walls and a floating structural panel to isolate the transmission of noise and vibration from the street while maintaining transparency in the performance spaces. The double glazing system also adds a sustainable element to the design and creates an additional thermal buffer.

On the second level of the Bowes Center, the Center for New Media provides studio space, classrooms, and critical listening rooms for students enrolled in the conservatory’s Technology and Applied Composition program. Taking advantage of the school’s location in the Performing Arts District and its proximity to Silicon Valley, the program prepares classically trained composers to score the film and video games. The center is also used by students of the SFCM’s Roots, Jazz and American Music program, created in partnership with SFJAZZ. Classrooms, keyboard labs, a black box technology hall and a recording studio for all SFCM students are located underground in acoustically tightly controlled spaces. Floors three through eleven feature one, two, and three-bedroom units, each acoustically isolated for practice. One floor is dedicated to the students of the San Francisco Ballet as an extension of the conservatory’s unprecedented partnership with nearby SF Ballet.

William Joseph Brooks 1937-2023. Bill died unexpectedly at his home in Burlington, Kansas on February 16, 2023.

Bill was born on April 12, 1937 in San Jose, California to Hollin and Helen Brooks.

Bill’s death was preceded by his brother Hollin, mother and father, and uncle Lock Martin (Gort in The Day the Earth Stand Still Movie 1951).

His remaining family includes Gary Brooks of Ada, Oklahoma, Sean (Elizabeth) Brooks of San Francisco, Jeanine Brooks (Roger Schmidt) of Sitka, Alaska.

Grandchildren are: Elise Brooks, Maren Brooks, Anja Brooks-Schmidt and Mina Brooks-Schmidt.

Bill grew up in Hollister and worked in his father’s grocery store from 1945 to 1955.

From 1955 to 1960 he attended California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering. He later went to the Illiff School of Theology in Denver, CO, where he received a Masters of Divinity.

Bill worked as a private plumbing consultant for schools and hospitals from 1960 to 1963. From 1963 to 1967 he was construction manager for the city of Cupertino.

In 1967, Bill began working as an Assistant Forest Engineer for the US Forest Service in Eldorado National Forest, moved to Inyo National Forest in Bishop, California in 1972, and then to Fresno, California for a year before becoming a forest engineer in Sitka. Alaska in 1976 and remained in that position until 1981.

Bill always had a story to tell about his forest service jobs. Wilderness work has always been interesting.

From 1991 to 2005, Bill was a project manager for the SouthEast Regional Health Consortium in Sitka, Alaska, where he facilitated multi-million dollar contracts and upgrades for the hospital and community health departments.

His most recent position was in Ada, Oklahoma, where he was project manager for the design and construction of the largest Native American-funded hospital in the United States in 2006 and retired in 2013. This construction project was completed in August 2010 on schedule and within the original budget.

Bill enjoyed singing in the church choir, traveling, engaging in good conversation to connect with people, and participating in many organizations wherever he lived—like Kiwanis and the Lions Club. He made friends easily and always had a meeting or gatherings to attend.

One story he personally witnessed was that his front living room window was shattered by the Pearl Harbor newspaper that was thrown into it and that he knew people who went to the Japanese internment camps in California.

There will be no funeral for Bill but the citizens of Burlington, Kansas had to gather as he is missing. This will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 10:30 am in the basement of the United Methodist Church in Burlington, Kansas

The Center is named in honor and recognition of the $46.4M gift from the William K. Bowes, Jr. Foundation, which marks the largest capital gift ever made to a music school; the Foundation’s namesake was a longtime SFCM supporter and trustee. Walking distance to SFCM’s Ann Getty Center at 50 Oak Street, the Conservatory’s home since 2006, the Bowes Center creates housing for up to 420 students. The building also includes 27 rent-stabilized apartments, which upgrade and replace existing units from the site’s previous building for its prior tenants.

Cavagnero’s design emphasizes openness, engagement, and light through its exterior of white and transparent glass. Filled with the sights and sounds of music, the Bowes Center invites passersby at this active intersection to see performances through floor-to-ceiling windows in its ground-floor jewel-box Cha Chi Ming Recital Hall. The top two floors glow like a beacon at night, with floor-to-ceiling windows, the 200-seat Barbro Osher Recital Hall, flexible event space, and roof terrace offering unparalleled views of City Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, the War Memorial Opera House, and other landmarks.

Building on the firm’s innovations in the design of SFJAZZ, Cavagnero’s design for Bowes achieves the transparency of a glass exterior while exceeding its rigorous acoustic requirements. To achieve a cohesive design language, while meeting its high acoustic demands—which change from floor to floor, with a mix of performance, practice, recording, and residential spaces throughout its twelve stories, and are made more complex by the neighboring Van Ness Avenue —the Cavagnero team designed a custom curtainwall system that integrates all acoustic requirements into one seamless envelope. Collaborating with Kirkegaard Associates, Tipping Structural Engineers, and curtainwall fabricator CS Erectors, Cavagnero pushed the boundaries of glass’s capacity to perform at high acoustic levels. The design utilizes double-glazed walls and a floating structural slab to isolate noise and vibration transmission from the street while maintaining transparency in the performance spaces. The double-glazed system also provides a sustainable element to the design, creating an additional thermal buffer.

On the Bowes Center’s second level, the Center for New Media features studio space, lesson rooms, and critical listening rooms for students participating in the Conservatory’s Technology and Applied Composition Program. Capitalizing on the school’s location in the performing arts district, and proximity to Silicon Valley, the program prepares classically trained composers to score the film and video games. The center is also used by students in SFCM’s Roots, Jazz, and American Music Program, created in partnership with SFJAZZ. Classrooms, keyboard labs, a black box technology hall and a recording studio for all SFCM students are located in highly acoustically controlled spaces below ground levels. Floors three through 11 hold one, two, and three-bedroom housing units, each acoustically isolated for practicing. One floor is dedicated to housing San Francisco Ballet Students as an extension of the Conservatory’s unprecedented partnership with the nearby SF Ballet.

In one of America’s most sought-after neighborhoods, San Francisco’s Pacific Heights, there is a newly listed building designed by one of the Bay Area’s most renowned architects of the past century: William Wurster.

Although Wurster designed landmarks like Ghirardelli Square as well as campus buildings at UC Berkeley (where he became the dean of the School of Architecture in 1950) and Stanford University, he was best known for designing hundreds of California homes dating from the 1920s to 1940s.

The entrance is carved into the front of the house – a design step that provides shelter on rainy days in San Francisco.

These houses were built in simple shapes with locally sourced wood and helped define contemporary residential architecture. Wurster’s Gregory Farmhouse from 1928 in Scotts Valley, California, is even considered a kind of prototype for the later ubiquitous ranch house.

The house Wurster designed on 1641 Green Street in Pacific Heights is not a ranch, but an exercise in higher-density urban living – its garage door greets visitors at the edge of the sidewalk, while the living areas are on the upper floors. Even so, there is a surprisingly lush garden area at the rear of the property, reminiscent of the more pastoral settings one associates with ranch houses.

The house leads to its back garden with a series of terraced balconies.

While many nearby apartment buildings are essentially maisonettes, with second units at the rear of their rectangular hilltop lots, this home reserves more than half of its entire lot for green space, including a tall, full-grown eucalyptus tree.

The garden, which combines traditional Olmsted-influenced design elements with modernist sensibility, was designed by William Wurster’s frequent collaborator Thomas Church.

The house was completed in 1940 – a transition period in Wurster’s life and career as he began to move away from primarily house design. Wurster also married influential public housing advocate Catherine Bauer that same year while attending the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Like the adjoining dining room, the living room opens directly onto the garden.

Wurster’s clients for this Pacific Heights home were significant in themselves. During World War II, Harley and Georgiana Stevens both worked for the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the CIA.

The dining room is particularly flooded with light.

Although they traveled extensively – both during and after the war (including spending several years in Beirut while Harley worked as a lawyer for the oil industry and Georgiana became Middle East correspondent for The Atlantic and The Economist) – the couple never let go of their home. After Harley died in 1959, Georgiana stayed here until her own death in 2004.

A 2017 remodel by Butler Armsden updated the finishes of the house – especially in the kitchen and bathroom.

Butler Armsden Architects from San Francisco completely rebuilt the four-story house in 2017. “Like most Wurster houses, this house uses simple, unpretentious materials – especially the Douglas fir paneling that you find everywhere,” explains Glenda Flaim, the office’s executive director. “It was designed with a flexible, adaptable plan that is still very relevant to our lives today and a great deal of attention to the location.”

The master bedroom looks out over the garden and continues the palette of Douglas fir paneling.

The master suite also has its own fireplace.

In fact, the Douglas fir walls are amazingly beautiful when you step into the house. Although this wood can often take on an unpleasant shade of orange with age, the panels here are exquisitely preserved and at the same time show a level of detail that makes the whole house sing.

“We have modernized the service rooms (bathrooms and kitchen) and restored the beautiful original materials and numerous fixtures,” adds Flaim, “but above all we have worked to preserve the essence of this house.”

The master bathroom on the third floor with its own shower area with glass cubes looks directly onto Green Street.

William Wurster was just one of two major designers involved in this project. The other was Wurster’s frequent associate and professor at the University of California, the landscape architect Thomas Church.

Though Church’s colleague Lawrence Halprin of San Francisco is often credited with introducing modernist principles to landscape architecture, it was Church, born 12 years earlier, that helped pioneer what became known as the California garden style.

The family room on the 4th floor has its own terrace with a garden view.

The family room deck expands the space for real Californian living indoors and outdoors.

Here in Pacific Heights, Church and Wurster created what the property listing aptly describes as “a magical retreat with a towering eucalyptus tree, green lawn and gardens, and an outdoor dining area adjacent to the chic formal dining room. “Church’s original landscape design and concept” has been carefully preserved, adding a sense of space and privacy to the home, “says Flaim.

The main kitchen / living / dining area of the four story house is on the second level, but due to the hillside location of the property, these rooms open directly to the landscaped garden in the background.

The second largest bedroom in the house is actually the one that opens onto its own terrace overlooking the back yard.

The deck on the second floor feels like your own private tree house.

Up one floor is the master suite, which has walls clad in the same beautiful Doug pine paneling and large windows overlooking the garden. Adjacent is a guest room with a convenience that even the master bedroom lacks: it opens to an aft deck.

There is a family room on the top floor which also extends to a private deck overlooking the street. There is also an additional bedroom that can be used as an additional guest room or as a small office. If you don’t feel like climbing three flights of stairs to get there, don’t worry: this home has its own elevator.

Completed in 1940, the house is unusually urban for a design by William Wurster. It borrows from the German Bauhaus movement and the work of architects such as Walter Gropius.

In a place like Pacific Heights, once dubbed America’s most expensive neighborhood, it’s not just about the house. About 12 blocks west is the Presidio, which has hiking trails and lots of greenery. A few blocks east of the property is hundreds of restaurants in Chinatown and North Beach.

Nevertheless, this house with its lush garden offers a personal oasis that one would never want to leave again.

1641 Green Street in San Francisco, California is being offered by Neil Bassi of Sotheby’s International Realty for $ 6,925,000.

Charles William Dunn Sr., 79 years old, of Livermore, died on March 14, 2021 with his family at home.

Charles was born on April 5, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio. Depending on how he was known, he was called Chuck (by the family) and Charlie (in his business). His parents, Charles Edwin Dunn and Loretta Jane (Weikart), preceded him in death. He leaves behind his 53-year-old wife Jennie Lynn (Bronston); and children, Laureen Ray, Gwen Toschi (Patrick), Charles W. Dunn II (Crissy) and Chance Dunn.

He was the grandfather of Jeff, Melissa, Victoria, Gina, Roy, Amber, Nichole, Ryan, Zachary, Chase, and Cole; and great grandfather of Daniella, Madison, Madilyn, Hyden, Mattis, Slone and Emma. He was a sibling of Catherine Pecoraro (Ohio); and a brother, Robert Dunn, California, who died suddenly six days after Chuck’s death. Chuck also leaves several nieces and nephews behind.

The support of his family was of the utmost importance to him – he often worked in two jobs at the same time. After several minor jobs in school, he worked as a nurse at Fairview Hospital in Cleveland before moving to 82nd. Upon his return from the Army, Chuck began working for the family business DC Bowling and Billiard Supply in Cleveland, where he also worked as a driver and train driver Cleveland Transit System.

In 1970, after riding his Harley through the United States, he began his 32-year career with AC Transit in the Bay Area, California. Following his entrepreneurial spirit, he founded his own family business for chimney sweeps in 1983 – he reluctantly retired in 2016.

He traveled extensively in the US and Europe through his job – making lifelong friendships and adding flair to everyone he met and was known as “Charlie”. His home has always been a retreat for those who wanted to experience beautiful California. Known for his late night discussions and strong currents, if you sat with him long enough you would learn so much about life. He is missed by many!

In his signature phrase we say, “Farewell until we see you again, Shaka, Charlie.” Instead of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Hope Hospice – 6377 Clark Ave., Suite 100, Dublin, CA 94568.
