A frost advisory and a freeze warning were issued for a second straight day Monday for parts of the Bay Area and Northern California with subfreezing temperatures again expected overnight.

The National Weather Service issued a frost warning for the North Bay interior valleys where temperatures were expected to be as low as 30 degrees. The advisory will be in effect from 10 p.m. Monday through 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The weather service also issued a freeze warning for the Central Valley and Salinas Valley where the forecast was for temperatures as low as 28 degrees. That advisory was also to be in effect from overnight 10 p.m. through 9 a.m.

KPIX Weather Center: Current conditions, alerts, maps for your area

Residents in those areas were warned to protect pets, outdoor plumbing and sensitive vegetation from the cold. Unprotected plumbing should be wrapped or insulated, or allowed to drip slowly, to prevent possible bursting.

Low temperatures in coastal and interior areas around the Bay Area were expected to stay in the 40s and even the low 50s.

Separately, a coastal flood advisory was in effect Monday along the San Francisco Bay and North Bay shorelines, with minor coastal flooding possible due to high astronomical tide.

Meanwhile, rainy conditions could return to the Bay Area beginning Tuesday night, according to the weather service. Following sunny skies for much of the day Tuesday, clouds were expected to roll in by the evening bringing some light drizzle. Chances for rain are strongest in the North Bay and should last through early Thursday; longer-term models hinted at unsettled weather and wet conditions continuing into next week, the weather service said.

The National Weather Service forecast for the greater San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday calls for rain and mostly cloudy skies. Patchy fog could feature in the morning in some parts of North and South Bay.

Daytime highs are expected to be in the 60s to 70s on the coast, around the bay, and inland.

Overnight lows should be in the 50s throughout the Bay Area. There are chances of evening rain throughout the region.

Increasing onshore winds, clouds and light rain are expected to develop through the weekend and Monday. It’s been breezy to gusty at times across parts of the Bay Area during the evening.

Lower level cooling will continue to deepen the marine layer on Sunday morning allowing a greater inland intrusion of stratus clouds, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service forecast for the greater San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday calls for sunny skies.

Daytime highs are expected to be in the 70s on the coast and around the bay, and in the high 70s to 80s inland. Overnight lows should be in the 50s throughout the Bay Area, with some areas in the region dropping into the high 40s.

Forecasters expect calm weather to continue in the Bay Area on Wednesday. Dry conditions will persist throughout the day.

Return of onshore flow is expected along with a weakening frontal boundary on Thursday. Forecasters say temps will cool slightly over the Bay Area while the Central Coast remains above seasonal averages. The moistening and cooling trend will continue into Friday with increasing cloud cover, according to forecasters.

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The low temperatures overnight into Friday morning will be in the low to mid-40s and some spots in the Berkshires may get into the upper 30s!

The Great Barrington Fire Department is reminding homeowners of preparations to take as thermostats are kicking on the heat.

Fall’s chill sets in, New England’s temperature drop

7 Day Forecast

  • One of the most important things in our area is making sure your chimney is clean and in good shape. We strongly encourage leaving the roof climbing to the professionals and Santa Claus – hire a professional chimney sweep to clean and inspect your chimney.
  • Check your Heating System- Before it gets really cold—early October is the ideal time—turn on your heating unit to ensure it is working properly. Your unit has been sitting dormant for about 6 months, so you’ll want to make sure everything is in proper working order before you really need it. Especially if you have oil, we recommend having a professional HVAC tech clean and service your equipment. It will burn better and more efficient. Make sure you have a working CO detector on every level of your home including the basement. It will – without a doubt – save your life.
  • Perform a DIY home inspection, then break out the leaf blower and rake! Something as simple as a pile of leaves can be the catalyst for a fire. Take a couple of hours, and clean your gutters, check your downspouts, and remove all leaves and debris from the perimeter of your space. Make sure to clean them out from under decks and porches.
  • Never park your vehicle over a pile of leaves. The heat emitted from your car can ignite the leaves, destroying your vehicle and all things around it. Certainly not a good way to end the day.
  • After every load of laundry, always clean the lint screen. While the chimney sweep is there, have them clean your dryer vent, at minimum clean it yourself.
  • Every month, test your smoke detectors. Doing it more than twice a year that you change the batteries is a good practice.
  • If you plan to use electric heaters, make sure that they are in perfect shape. Consider replacing them with a more efficient model. Make sure that the cords are in good shape and not showing any sign of wear and always plugged directly into the outlet and not an extension cord.

When is the first day of fall 2023?

The first day of fall is this Saturday, September 23rd, also known as the autumn equinox. The clocks roll back one hour at 2 a.m. on November 5th. Use that extra hour to prepare your home or business for a fire-safe fall and winter season.

The National Weather Service forecast for the greater San Francisco Bay Area on Thursday calls for sunny skies, with light winds expected in most areas of the region.

Daytime highs are expected to be in the high 80s to 90s on the coast, in the mid 80s to 90s around the bay, and in the high 90s to 100s inland. Overnight lows should be in the 60s throughout the Bay Area.

Max temps of over 90 degrees are expected across much of the interior valleys, the Santa Lucias, and the Santa Cruz Mountains, and portions.

Due to widespread elevated temps, a Heat Advisory has been issued for the San Francisco Peninsula, the San Francisco Bay Shoreline, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the Santa Clara Valley from 11 a.m. through 11 p.m. Friday.

Residents are advised to practice heat safety, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities during peak heating in the afternoon.

According to a new analysis from Redfin, 26% of the nation’s homebuyers are looking to move to a different part of the country, up slightly from 24% a year ago, and roughly 19% before the pandemic began.

Elevated mortgage rates still in excess of 7% have cooled the overall U.S. housing market, with fewer homes for sale and fewer buyers in the market. But a high portion of the homebuyers who are moving are relocating to different metro areas.

Redfin reports that there are 7% fewer users of its site looking to move away from their home metro than a year ago, compared to a 16.5% decline for those searching within their home metro.

Relocations are holding up better than in-metro moves, largely because homebuyers are searching for affordability, and remote work gives many Americans the freedom to move. Nine of the 10 most popular migration destinations have a lower median home-sale price than the most common origin of homebuyers moving in.

The most popular destination for relocating homebuyers recorded by Redfin was Sacramento, California, where the typical home sold for $575,000, nearly $1 million less than the typical home sold in San Francisco ($1,480,000), the most popular origin of buyers moving in. With a 7% mortgage rate–roughly the average for August–the monthly payment for the median-priced Sacramento home is $3,889, compared to $10,010 for the median-priced San Francisco home.

“Half of the buyers I’m working with are moving in from out of town, all but one from the Bay Area,” said Alison Williams, a Redfin Premier Agent in Sacramento. “Most of them are moving not necessarily because they cannot afford the Bay Area, but because they want a bigger home and better quality of life. They are searching for high-end homes with spacious yards where they can raise a family. I am also working with a few investors who are looking to buy a home here and rent it out for a few years before moving in themselves.”

After Sacramento, Las Vegas and three Florida metros–Orlando, North Port-Sarasota, and Tampa–are the most popular destinations for homebuyers looking to relocate.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina climbed to number six after debuting on Redfin’s list of most popular destinations in July at ninth. Another Florida metro, Cape Coral, is also in the top 10.

Those metros listed above have a few things in common: They are more affordable than the most common origin of homebuyers moving in, and they face increasing climate risks. Sacramento and Las Vegas face severe heat risk, Orlando, North Port-Sarasota, Myrtle Beach, and Cape Coral face extreme wind/hurricane risk, while Tampa and Cape Coral are at extreme risk of flooding.

While research has shown that homebuyers consider climate risk when deciding where to live, affordability is often a more significant factor. A recent Redfin survey found that roughly 8% of U.S. residents likely to move within the next year are doing so because they are concerned about the impact of climate change on their previous area, compared with 22% moving for a lower cost of living.

Homebuyers are leaving San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles more than any other metro in the country, based on net outflow, a measure of how many more Redfin.com users are looking to exit a metro than move in.

It is typical for expensive job centers to top the list of places homebuyers are moving away from, as those people seek more affordable housing. Homebuyers leaving Los Angeles, for instance, are most commonly moving to Las Vegas, where homes are half the price.

The National Weather Service forecast for the greater San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday calls for cloudy morning skies over much of the region, gradually clearing up throughout the day.

After a bit of early-season rain over the North Bay moving south overnight, residents can look forward to generally quiet, pleasant weather throughout the week. Breezy to locally gusty winds in the afternoons are also in the forecast.

Daytime highs are expected to be in the 60s to 70s on the coast, mostly in the 70s around the bay, and in the 70s to 80s inland. Overnight lows should be in the 50s throughout the Bay Area.

Forecasters have issued a High Surf Advisory through Tuesday evening, with large breaking waves of 14 to 16 feet expected along the San Francisco Peninsula coast, coastal North Bay including Point Reyes National Seashore, Monterey Bay and the Big Sur coast.

The advisory warns the public of dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion. Large waves can sweep across the beach without warning, pulling people into the sea from the rocks, jetties and beaches. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water.

LOS ANGELES — Authorities issued an evacuation order for over 1,500 people to leave a Northern California agricultural community early Saturday after a levee along a nearby river was breached by flooding caused by recent inclement weather.

Rain and snow pounded huge swaths of California on Friday, forcing highway closures across the state and one major dam to open its spillway for the first time in nearly four years.

Around 9,000 people were under evacuation orders in the state, California Office of Emergency Services Director Nancy Ward said.

In Tulare County, evacuation orders were issued for the parts of the small community of Springville and city of Exeter, due to flooding and swollen waterways, the sheriff’s office said. Evacuation warnings were issued along the Tule River in Porterville, population 62,000.

President Joe Biden on Friday approved a state of emergency request from Gov. Gavin Newsom, triggering federal assistance to state, “tribal, and local response efforts” caused by ongoing “severe winter storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides” the White House said.

“We’ve been here about 20 years, and we really haven’t seen anything to this extent,” said Eric Diekmann of Soquel in Santa Cruz County, whose home is on the other side of a road that washed out.

Even after flood concerns taper Friday night, more bad weather is in store for the weekend and the coming days, National Weather Service meteorologist David Lawrence said.

The storm waned throughout Saturday, but another strong atmospheric event is expected on Monday that could bring more snow in the higher-elevated mountain regions and renewed flooding concerns.

“We will see additional rounds of both rain and heavy mountain snow redevelop across much of Northern and Central California as we go through the weekend,” Lawrence told reporters at OES headquarters in the Sacramento suburb of Mather. “And we’re also likely to see this weather pattern continuing as we go into at least the first half of next week.”

Weeks of relentless snowfall has kept the state’s transportation agency busy clearing roads of 45 million cubic yards of snow in the past month, enough to “fill more than 100 Rose Bowls,” said California Department of Transportation Chief Deputy Director Mike Keever.

Recent storms prompted the state to release water from the main spillway at Lake Oroville midday Friday, with snowmelt likely to further swell lake levels in the coming months.

It’s just the second time water has been released from the rebuilt spillway, following the 2017 disaster that upended life around Gold Country and forced the evacuation of more than 180,000 people.

Some of the most famous and well-traveled roads in California were shut down at times on Friday because of flooding.

  • A portion of Scenic Highway 1 in Monterey County was closed due to rockfalls, water and debris.

  • Southbound U.S. Highway 101 near the state’s garlic hub of Gilroy could not be used.

  • Interstate 580, a major highway through the East Bay of San Francisco, finally reopened by mid-day.

  • Main Street in Soquel, a community of around 9,900 in Santa Cruz County, washed away. In Kernville, northeast of Bakersfield, evacuation orders were issued due to high water in the Kern River.

State authorities warned California residents that any amount of moving water can be dangerous.

As little as 6 inches of moving water can easily knock a person off their feet, while a foot of water has the force to sweep a car away, the San Luis Obispo Office of Emergency Services warned residents of the Central Coast Friday.

“Remember, do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters and avoid non-essential travel today,” the agency said.

Transportation department officials urged state residents to check their weather before stepping outside.

The department cautioned drivers to be “prepared for delays and carry extra food, water, blankets and other essentials, and pack cellphone chargers.”

The heaviest rain had moved out of Northern California by Friday afternoon, but not before dumping around 3 to 4 inches of rain in parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, according to the National Weather Service.

Flood watches were in place for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties until 4 a.m. Saturday, but the National Weather Service in Oxnard said Friday night that heavy rain had ended and waters were beginning to recede.

More than 10 inches of rain fell in Rocky Butte in San Luis Obispo County by 10 p.m., the weather service said, although other areas were lower. In the village of Cambria, where there had been evacuation orders for some residents that were later lifted, more than 5 inches of rain fell.

In Paso Robles, Chimney Rock Road washed away. A San Luis Obispo County spokesperson said they had issues with the road since January and had temporary fixes on it, but those failed Friday morning.

Fresno County first responders made rescues, including three women, two of whom were in their 80s and one who was 104 years old, who were trapped in their home after a culvert washed out, Sheriff John Zanoni said Friday.

A wintery weekend is expected in the Upper Midwest.

Blizzard conditions are anticipated in eastern Montana, North Dakota, and northern Minnesota through Sunday morning. An additional 6 to 12 inches of snow is projected with wind gusts over 45 mph.

A cold front could produce severe weather with the threat of hail, tornadoes, and damaging wind gusts in the Southeast and Southern plains.

A storm system on Friday dumped snow and rain across the Great Lakes, Northeast and Southeast with totals including 12 inches in Mequon, Wisconsin, 10 inches in Milwaukee, 9 inches in Woodstock, Illinois, and 4 inches around Detroit.

Rain and snow showers will continue to move from the eastern Great Lakes through the Mid-Atlantic region.

Western New York and northeast Pennsylvania could see 1 to 2 feet of snow.
