President Joe Biden and China’s Xi Jinping opened their first face-to-face meeting in more than a year Wednesday with a solid handshake ahead of talks with far-reaching implications for a world grappling with economic crosscurrents, wars in the Middle East and Europe, tensions in Taiwan and more.

The two leaders, meeting at a bucolic country estate in Woodside, which is south of San Francisco, are looking to get communication back on track after a tumultuous year and to show the world that while they are global economic competitors, they’re not locked in a winner-take-all face-off.

Biden arrived first and awaited Xi, who got out of a black car and took Biden’s hand before the two leaders walked a red carpet through the estate’s grand entrance with a Chinese flag on one side and an American flag on the other. Five Marines stood in formation.

Biden told Xi in his opening remarks: “It is paramount that you and I understand each other clearly, leader to leader, with no misconceptions or miscommunications. We have to ensure competition does not veer into conflict, and we also have to manage it responsibility, that competition. That’s what the United States wants, and what we intend to do. I also believe that’s what the world wants from both of us— candid exchange.”

Xi said he believed in the “promising future” of the bilateral relationship.

Chinese President Xi Jinping speaks during a meeting with President Joe Biden at the Filoli estate in Woodside on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperative conference. | Source: Doug Mills/The New York Times/AP/Pool

“The U.S.-China relationship has never been smooth sailing over the last 50 years or more, and it always faced problems of one kind or another. Yet it has kept moving forward amid twists and turns. For two large countries like the U.S. and China, turning our backs on each other is not an option.”

Biden is expected to let Xi know that he would like China to use its sway over Iran to make clear that Tehran or its proxies should not take action that could lead to expansion of the Israel-Hamas war. The Biden administration also sees the Chinese, a big buyer of Iranian oil, as having considerable leverage with Iran, which is a major backer of Hamas.

Ahead of the meeting, senior White House officials said Biden would walk away with better, more concrete outcomes compared with their last meeting, in November 2022 in Bali, Indonesia, on the sidelines of the Group of 20 leaders summit. There will be agreements from China to help stop the flow of chemicals used in the production of illicit fentanyl, and to revive communications between the militaries—increasingly important particularly as unsafe or unprofessional incidents between the two nations’ ships and aircraft have spiked.

<img alt="President Joe Biden shakes the hand of China's President President Xi Jinping next to a large wooden door." src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" decoding="async" data-nimg="responsive" class="block undefined lazyloaded" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;bottom:0;right:0;box-sizing:border-box;padding:0;border:none;margin:auto;display:block;width:0;height:0;min-width:100%;max-width:100%;min-height:100%;max-height:100%;background-size:cover;background-position:0% 0%;filter:blur(20px);background-image:url("data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==")"/>President Joe Biden greets China’s President President Xi Jinping at the Filoli Estate in Woodside on Wednesday, Nov, 15, 2023, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperative conference. | Source: Doug Mills/The New York Times/AP/Pool

Biden on Tuesday billed the meeting as a chance to get Washington and Beijing back “on a normal course corresponding” once again.

Even before their meeting, there were some signs of a thaw: The State Department on Tuesday announced that the U.S. and China—two of the world’s biggest polluters—had agreed to pursue efforts to triple renewable energy capacity globally by 2030, through wind, solar and other renewables.

They are in California for the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, but they met one-on-one at Filoli estate, a country house and museum about 25 miles south of San Francisco.

<img alt="A row of people including U.S. President Joe Biden looks off screen." src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" decoding="async" data-nimg="responsive" class="block undefined lazyloaded" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;bottom:0;right:0;box-sizing:border-box;padding:0;border:none;margin:auto;display:block;width:0;height:0;min-width:100%;max-width:100%;min-height:100%;max-height:100%;background-size:cover;background-position:0% 0%;filter:blur(20px);background-image:url("data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==")"/>U.S. President Joe Biden listens during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Filoli estate in Woodside on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperative conference. | Source: Doug Mills/The New York Times/AP/Pool

The APEC summit events already have attracted considerable demonstrations, and more were expected Wednesday, including protests against Xi and against multinational corporations focused on profits.

In the hours before the meeting, White House officials said Biden was coming into the talks bolstered by signs the U.S. economy is in a stronger position than China’s, and that the U.S. is building stronger alliances throughout the Pacific.

The U.S. president, speaking at a campaign fundraiser on Tuesday evening, pointed to his upcoming meeting as an example of how “reestablished American leadership in the world is taking hold.” As for China, the president told donors, it has ”real problems.”

The San Francisco 49ers hit the road this week for a Monday Night Football matchup against Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings. Currently 5-1, the Niners are the team to beat this 2023 NFL season. The 2-4 Vikings have struggled all season, but the Niners are battered and banged up.

The Niners offense has taken some serious hits this season and superstar receiver Christian McCaffrey won’t play this Monday. San Francisco is tough, resilient and talented, but the team is also a little worse for wear. It’s a perfect time for the Vikings to pull out a miracle performance. An underdog at home, the Minnesota Vikings are primed to upset the Niners. It would be a miracle, but it’s possible.

When is the San Francisco 49ers vs. Minnesota Vikings game on

The Week 7 Monday Night Football matchup between the Niners and Vikings will be played on Oct. 23, 2023 at 8:15 p.m ET (4:15 p.m. PT). The game will air on ABC and ESPN.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell

                Getty Images

Let’s talk about those Lions: The Detroit Lions come into Week 7 with a 5-1 record, putting them three games ahead of the Green Bay Packers for the top spot in the AFC North. The division dominated by Aaron Rodgers for so long now belongs to Jared Goff and the Lions. Fueled by Dan Campbell and a defense you’d hate to be on the other side of, the Lions rebuild is in full effect. Do the Lions have what it takes to go all the way to the Super Bowl? That remains to be seen, but we’re going to have fun watching them try.

Taylor Swift is the only thing bigger than the NFL: Taylor and Travis officially made it official this past weekend, hard launching their romance with surprise cameos on SNL and a public moment of PDA that sent Swifties and the Chiefs Kingdom swooning. As if fans weren’t already on the Chiefs bandwagon, Swift has made fans of entire universe of 12-year-old girls. If they weren’t already tuning in, they are now. With booming ratings, windbreaker sales galore and Taylor spotting at Arrowhead Stadium, Taylor Swift has proved that the only thing bigger than the NFL is her.

That 49ers defense is dangerous: Brock Purdy silenced naysayers last season when he took over after both QBs Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered season-ending injuries. Coach Shanahan traded Lance and gave Purdy the starting job this season with little trepidation that the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft had what it takes. Shanahan’s decision has paid off two weeks in, the team is undefeated and Purdy shows full command of the team. But the 49ers Nick Bosa-led defense is what could take this team to the Super Bowl. The Niners come into Week 7 with just loss. If this team can stay healthy, they have the makings of a Super Bowl contender and one of the most fun teams to watch this season.

Week 6 of the 2023 NFL season is here, and the football action this Sunday is hot. In an early game, the undefeated San Francisco 49ers (5-0) travel to Cleveland to face the 2-2 Browns. San Francisco may have a 9.5-point advantage coming into the game, but the Cleveland Browns have the league’s top-ranked offense.

Will today’s matchup be another blowout win for the 49ers? Or will the Cleveland Browns score an upset? You’ll have to watch today’s game to find out.

When does the San Francisco 49ers vs. Cleveland Browns game begin?

Fox, so you know, offers Sunday NFC games via “NFL on Fox”; while ESPN is the home of “Monday Night Football.” ABC airs some “MNF” games, too.

Watch local NFL football live with a digital HDTV antenna

                Amazon

If you’re cutting the cord to your cable company, you’re not alone; in fact, you are in luck. You can still watch the NFL on TV with an affordable indoor antenna, which pulls in local over-the-air HDYC channels such as CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and PBS. Here’s the kicker: There’s no monthly charge.

Anyone living in partially blocked-off area (those near mountains or first-floor apartments), a digital TV antenna may not pick up a good signal – or any signal at all. But for many homes, a digital TV antenna provides a seriously inexpensive way to watch college football without paying a staggering monthly fee. Indoor TV antennas can also provide some much-needed TV backup if a storm knocks out your cable (or your cable company gets in a squabble with a network).

This amplified HDTV antenna, claims to have a 50-mile range and offers 36 channels. It’s rated 4.0 stars by Amazon reviewers.

Said one Amazon customer, “When the price of this antenna dropped to $50, it was competitively priced with what you would find on the shelves at your local Radio Shack. If you’re considering this product, you’re probably already questioning your cable television bill and are looking around for a cheap way to get the Big 3 plus Fox and PBS. This antenna delivered that for us right out of the box.”

Watch the 49ers vs. Browns game on your phone with NFL+

If you want to catch the game on your phone — and all the amazing football ahead this season — check out NFL+. The premium streaming service, starting at $40 per year (or $7 per month), offers access to NFL Network. And yes, that includes games being broadcast out-of-market. To boost your NFL experience even further, you can upgrade to NFL+ Premium with NFL RedZone and watch up to eight NFL games simultaneously. A seven-day, free trial is available.

Top features of NFL+:

You get access to all NFL preseason games, including those that are out of market.

NFL+ lets you watch stream local and primetime regular season games on your phone or tablet, but not your TV.

Includes the NFL Network (and NFL RedZone with NFL+ Premium), so it’s a good option for those who are looking to stream football on the go.

Will Dak get to the Super Bowl (or close)? The Dallas Cowboys were off to a splashy 2023 season start, 3-1 coming into Week 5. QB Dak Prescott promised to throw less picks than last season when he led the league for picks thrown. He’s at four this season. Cowboys fans hope he makes good on his promise. But Dak’s bigger focus is taking the Cowboys to the Super Bowl. Judging by the Cowboys’ performance in Week 5, getting past the mighty San Francisco 49ers this season is going to be tough. But then again, it is for everybody.

Taylor Swift is the only thing bigger than the NFL: While Swifties were quick to ‘ship Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift after the Eras Tour star showed up at Arrowhead Stadium during the Kansas City Chiefs Week 3 game against the Chicago Bears, Tay Tay herself seems all-in on her budding romance with the Chiefs superstar tight end. The Taylor-effect on the NFL has been massive, from Kelce gaining over half-a-million new Instagram followers in a day, to the NFL finding an entirely new fan base in Taylor-loving younger women — a coveted audience for the league. The NFL has fully embraced the league’s newest ambassador, friendship bracelets and all, much to the chagrin of Kelce who admitted on his podcast the league has “gone too far” with its Swelce/Kelswift coverage.

Shanahan’s decision has paid off five weeks in, the team is undefeated and Purdy shows full command of the team. But the 49ers Nick Bosa-led defense is what could take this team to the Super Bowl. The Niners came into Week 5 one of two undefeated teams remaining with no sign of slowing down.

Dianne Feinstein, who died Thursday night at the age of 90, was the longest-serving female U.S. senator in history. But even before her 30-year run in the Senate, Feinstein had already had a distinguished career in San Francisco politics, one that also spanned decades. And over the years, KQED Public Television was often there to capture it.

In the videos below, footage from the KQED 9 archives captures moments from Feinstein’s early years in San Francisco, beginning with her ascension to the city’s Board of Supervisors in 1969.

Over the last two decades, Feinstein also sat down with KQED for a number of televised interviews. Those exchanges serve as a snapshot of the quickly changing political environment in California and the United States — both for politicians and voters — during that period of time. In those conversations, Feinstein weighed in on everything from Obamacare and her fears about the “radical” nature of the Romney-Ryan presidential ticket, to the Brett Kavanaugh hearings and the election of Donald Trump.

1970: Feinstein sworn in as San Francisco Supervisor

In January 1970, Dianne Feinstein was sworn into the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and became its first female president. This footage shows Feinstein introducing her daughter, Katherine Anne and husband Bertram, welcoming Mayor Joseph Alioto to the Board and being formally sworn in. “Let’s adjourn with good thoughts for the 1970s,” Feinstein said at the meeting’s close.

Oct. 1978: Feinstein opens Pier 39 with Mayor Moscone

“Okay, don’t look into the camera.” In this rough KQED 9 footage from October 1978, which ranges from B-roll to interviews, a costumed Feinstein and Mayor George Moscone are seen cutting the giant ribbon to formally open the Pier 39 tourist attraction in San Francisco. The archival footage also includes scenes of brass bands performing, and workers and onlookers offering their opinions.

This video was taken less than two months before Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated by Supervisor Dan White inside San Francisco City Hall.

Nov. 27, 1978: Shockwaves from the assassination of Milk and Moscone

On Nov. 27, 1978, the day White murdered Milk and Moscone, storied journalist Belva Davis hosted the live show A Closer Look later that night on KQED 9.

At the 45:50 time mark, Davis introduces Acting Mayor Feinstein who joins the program by phone and — after initial technical difficulties — speaks about that day, including her attempts to reach White that morning owing to her fears of a brewing confrontation.

When asked if she has a message for the people of San Francisco, Feinstein said, “If ever there was a time to end the divisiveness that’s plagued this city, this is it.”

Nov. 27, 1978: Feinstein speaks at candlelight vigil at City Hall following the murders

Following the Nov. 27 murders of Moscone and Milk, mourners held a moving candlelight vigil from Castro Street to San Francisco City Hall. This KQED footage shows those gathered singing “Kumbaya,” and Feinstein being angrily heckled by some people in the crowd — who are then shushed by others — as she speaks outside City Hall (begins 1:21).

“San Francisco has lost two great leaders, and we question why,” she asked the crowd. “What is in a heart that can turn it to commit this kind of act?”

2010 interview: ‘Out of fear comes this kind of belligerence’

In this 2010 interview with KQED’s This Week in Northern California, Feinstein spoke to Scott Shafer about the “anger” she was seeing nationally around Obamacare.

She also spoke about why she didn’t believe comprehensive immigration reform in Congress was “dead,” and discussed UC Berkeley law professor Goodwin Liu’s nomination for the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

2012 interview: ‘Democrats really see the handwriting on the wall’

In Sept. 2017, Belva Davis, of KQED’s This Week in Northern California, sat down with Feinstein during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Feinstein spoke about the “radical agenda” of the Republican presidential campaign of Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan, and weighed in on former Gov. Pete Wilson calling California a “failed state.”

2017 interview: ‘He appears to be very impetuous’

In this KQED Newsroom interview, Feinstein said the election of President Donald Trump gave her “great pause.” Scott Shafer sat down with the veteran lawmaker in the nation’s Capitol — almost exactly four years before it would be attacked by Trump supporters in the Jan. 6 insurrection — to talk about her hopes for his first 100 days.

2018 interview: ‘What I want to do is be constructive and helpful to our nation’

As she appealed to voters to elect her to the Senate for a fifth term, Feinstein spoke to KQED Newsroom in Oct. 2018 about her high-profile role in the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings — and what she would have done differently given the chance. She also discussed the murder of journalist and U.S. resident Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul’s Saudi Arabian Consulate, and advocated for San Francisco’s Proposition C that aimed to address the city’s homeless issue by taxing big businesses.

The month of June started with a 5-10 record and a win over NL West rivals, the San Francisco Giants, but it really wasn’t the best month for the Dodgers. Things got better this week when they defeated the Angels in a two-game series with two shutouts. Still, in June it’s only 7-10.

Despite their checkered month, there were some positives for the Boys in Blue, most notably the buzz surrounding rookie starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan, who made his debut against the Giants last Friday night.

Sheehan pitched six scoreless innings and missed a goal in a 7-5 loss in the first of three games against San Francisco.

Emmet Sheehan had never thrown over Double-A before. He made MLB look easy. His final statement against the Giants:

6 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

The Dodgers needed depth and Sheehan went through 6 innings without a hit. What an incredible performance from the 23-year-old.

— Noah Camras (@noahcamras) June 17, 2023

The Boston College pitcher received praise from around the league, including from his own teammate Walker Buehler.

Despite Sheehan’s great performance, Buehler noticed something in his pitches that night.

“It’s a really crazy shot. Works really well, comes out of his hand really well, but it’s a bit unconventional and I think that’ll be something interesting to look at in the future.”

Walker Buehler on Just Baseball Show

Buehler also mentioned that the idea of opposing batsmen being unfamiliar with Sheehan may have played a big part in his impressive debut, but is keeping an eye on how long that will last.

“You don’t have much luck in the big leagues but not being familiar with a guy and kind of having that funk about you I think is definitely an advantage and will help him for a long time and kind of give him.” That leash for finding out the big leagues, which apparently he did for at least one night, right. So we’ll see how it goes, but obviously it’s the best start anyone could ask for.”

Walker Buehler on Just Baseball Show

As a Dodger fan, I’m very excited to see how Sheehan progresses, and I look forward to seeing if he can match that feat in his next start, later scheduled for either the Freeway series in Anaheim or at home in Houston is week.

After winning four straight series, the San Francisco Giants missed the last two at home. Now it’s time for them to take on a division rival, the Colorado Rockies. The bad news is the Giants are back on the road, and that’s at Coors Field. The good news is that the Rockies aren’t a great baseball team, and they rank last in the National League in terms of running difference…by a wide margin.

And the other good news: Reinforcements have arrived! The Giants activated both Thairo Estrada and Joc Pederson ahead of the game, which is big news (the relevant moves: Brett Wisely and Bryce Johnson were optioned). In addition, Michael Conforto is back in the squad. That’s three of the team’s best offensive players returning in a day at a batsman’s stadium. you love to see it

With Alex Wood recently placed in the IL, the Giants have an opener ahead of them and it’s right-back John Brebbia again. This year Brebbia is 2-0 with a 3.80 ERA, 2.48 FIP and 33 strikeouts on seven walks in 23.2 innings. He’s had four openers this year and has given up a run in four innings. His last time as an opener was his only hiccup when he gave up a run in 0.2 innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Left-hander Sean Manaea seems likely to throw some of the innings, and he’s been outstanding of late: In his last three appearances, Manaea has thrown nine innings and conceded just seven hits, three walks and one unearned run, with 14 strikeouts .

In the Rockies, it’s right-hander Dinelson Lamet that the Giants are most familiar with: He made his debut with the San Diego Padres in 2017 and has spent his entire career in that division. Lamet, who used to be exclusively in the starting XI, has been mostly a substitute this year and he’s been pretty bad. In 13 appearances he is 1-2 with a 13.17 ERA, 5.33 FIP and 17 strikeouts on 12 walks in 13.2 innings. The Rockies put him back in the starting role on his last appearance, and things went horribly when he gave up five runs in three innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He’s allowing nearly 2.5 baserunners an inning, so the Giants should have plenty of opportunities.

SAN FRANCISCO — For most of the Bay Area, including San Francisco, a frost watch was issued for Wednesday morning when temperatures could drop into the upper 20s in the inland valleys, according to the National Weather Service.

The freeze watch will be in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday, the NWS said.
Outside the inland valleys, temperatures could drop to 30 degrees.

Temperatures in San Francisco are expected to hit 38 degrees Tuesday morning and 40 degrees Wednesday morning. Temperatures in San Francisco are expected to reach 57 by Wednesday afternoon.

Freeze Watch 2am Wednesday through 9am Wednesday, expect lows in the inland valleys in the mid-high 20s to 30s near the bays and on the coast. Near record lows on Wednesday morning. Similar cold again on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, may require further freezing and/or freezing reports. #CAwx pic.twitter.com/7NZB4J2hnp
— NWS Bay Area (@NWSBayArea) February 13, 2023

People who are unprotected and marginally protected are at risk, weather officials said. The low temperatures could kill plants and other plants and damage unprotected outdoor installations.

Residents are urged to start protecting outdoor plants and water pipes now. Pipes should be wrapped and deflated or allowed to drain slowly.

Those with underground sprinkler systems should drain systems and cover overhead pipes.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to follow the “Four Ps” for protection against cold weather:

People: Wear layers, limit exposure to cold, check heaters ahead of time.

Plants: Cover or bring sensitive plants indoors.

Pets: Bring pets inside at night and provide them with heat

Pipes: Wrap/cover exposed outer pipes to prevent freezing.
