Charlie Walker, who was the subject of a recent film starring Luke Cage‘s Mike Colter, has died at 89 years old.

In the 1960s, Walker led protests to open public construction jobs to Black contractors who were being excluded and deliberately discriminated and passed over for white truckers and white-dominated unions.

He later became one of the most successful truckers in the United States and was well-revered for cleaning up the San Francisco Bay after an oil spill in the early ’70s.

The post Charlie Walker, San Francisco’s Black Contractors’ Hero, Honored By Biopic Star Mike Colter In Light Of His Death appeared first on Blavity.

Walker’s legacy was immortalized in the recent biopic, I’m Charlie Walker.

“Charlie Walker was a true original. Cut from the same cloth as men like my own father and uncles,” said Colter. Men from the seventies era that took opportunity by the horns. Charlie was unapologetic about his ambition and desire to carve out a place in the world. He made a way for his family and set an example for generations to come. He was a character that moved through the world with a certainty and swagger that made people take notice. He deserved to have his story told. It was an honor to portray him. He will never be forgotten. My condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in eternal peace”

I’m Charlie Walker producer Mike Regan said, “On behalf of our Executive Producer Bill O’Keeffe and our entire cast and crew we are all devastated by Charlie’s passing, but at the same time we are here to celebrate his amazing life. Our thoughts are with his beautiful wife Annette, his entire family and his beloved community of Bayview Hunters Point San Francisco. We could go on and on about Charlie’s accomplishments and the impact he had on so many, but we also know Charlie would tell us to get back to work. And that is exactly what we will do to continue to honor his legacy and amazing life”

“Like many, I was honored and privileged to spend a lot of time with Charlie, as he regaled in stories and wisdom,” said I’m Charlie Walker director Patrick Gilles. “He will be missed but certainly not forgotten.”

In 2022, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to honor Walker by naming a street in Bayview Hunters Point as “Charlie Way.”

Walker is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annette Walker, his daughters, Charlette Carnegia and Ruedell Walker, his son, Charles Walker Jr, his 11 grandchildren, which includes his eldest grandchild, Geoffrea Morris, whom he assisted in raising, and his 13, great-grandchildren, and host of nieces and nephews and community friends.

Unforgotten, in case anybody has forgotten (and all of these crime dramas do tend to blur into one), is the series starring Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar as cold-case detectives. Except that Walker is no more, her talent much in demand elsewhere and her character terminated in a shock car crash in 2021.

This might have been unfortunate because what elevated Unforgotten was the chemistry between DCI Cassie Stuart (Walker) and her colleague DI Sunny Khan (Bhaskar) – a mature, comradely working relationship between a man and a woman without a hint of sexual tension or even mild flirting. And in TV dramas, that’s as rare as a supermarket tomato.

Writer Chris Lang is too intelligent to simply introduce a Cassie 2.0 as a replacement. Instead, he has gone for the polar opposite in Sinéad Keenan’s DCI Jess James – a brusque, business-like new boss with seemingly little time for cold cases or Sunny’s grief-stricken demeanour.

And Sunny wasn’t living up to his name in the opening episode; in fact “Touchy” or “Moody” might have been more accurate. He and his colleague Fran (Carolina Main) shot each other empathetic, meaningful looks each time their new boss said something insensitive, but mostly he spent the time moping angrily around the office as if Jess herself had killed Cassie. And then he spent his evening communing with Cassie’s gravestone (“Cassie Stuart: mother, daughter, copper”) instead of attending the candlelit dinner prepared by his partner.

I think we were supposed to side with Sunny, and perhaps this reflects badly on me, but I found his hostility rather unprofessional. He should definitely have taken some compassionate leave.

As for Jess, she had every reason to feel terse and distracted – her husband having ended their marriage 54 minutes (as she punctiliously pointed out) before she started her new job.

The series-long storyline began in the usual Unforgotten manner with builders discovering mummified human remains stuffed up a chimney flue – one early guess being that they belonged to a Victorian chimney sweep.

The body was female, however, and dressed in fashions dating back to the 40s. This had Jess making the heretical observation in a cold-case environment that perhaps they should be concentrating on more recent crimes. It was then up to Sunny and Fran to establish that this was indeed a more recent victim (which they eventually did).

Georgia Mackenzie as Leanne Balcombe and Sanjeev Bhaskar as DI Sunny Khan (Photo: Mainstreet/ITV)

As usual we were served four seemingly unrelated sub-plots that will eventually coalesce around the central mystery. Ian McElhinney (Grandpa Joe in Derry Girls) played a Tory grandee with terminal cancer, former Casualty stalwart Martina Laird played a partner-abusing, recovering alcoholic restaurateur, and impressive newcomer Rhys Yates played a violent mugger supporting a junkie girlfriend. And then there was a Polish taxi driver in Paris. Search me how he fits in.

In fact, I have no idea where any of this is headed or how these characters are related, but it is so classily put together that I am now securely strapped in for the ride.

And the show had to be on its mettle to keep ahead of the pack – The Bay also returns to ITV next week, Better and The Gold are still bubbling away on BBC One and Channel 5 is currently churning out crime dramas by the dozen.

But Keenan, who played the werewolf Nina in Being Human and was Bafta-nominated as the mother of murdered Rhys Jones in Little Boy Blue, is a promising addition. Indeed, there is absolutely no reason to miss Cassie quite as keenly as Sunny.

The month of June started with a 5-10 record and a win over NL West rivals, the San Francisco Giants, but it really wasn’t the best month for the Dodgers. Things got better this week when they defeated the Angels in a two-game series with two shutouts. Still, in June it’s only 7-10.

Despite their checkered month, there were some positives for the Boys in Blue, most notably the buzz surrounding rookie starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan, who made his debut against the Giants last Friday night.

Sheehan pitched six scoreless innings and missed a goal in a 7-5 loss in the first of three games against San Francisco.

Emmet Sheehan had never thrown over Double-A before. He made MLB look easy. His final statement against the Giants:

6 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

The Dodgers needed depth and Sheehan went through 6 innings without a hit. What an incredible performance from the 23-year-old.

— Noah Camras (@noahcamras) June 17, 2023

The Boston College pitcher received praise from around the league, including from his own teammate Walker Buehler.

Despite Sheehan’s great performance, Buehler noticed something in his pitches that night.

“It’s a really crazy shot. Works really well, comes out of his hand really well, but it’s a bit unconventional and I think that’ll be something interesting to look at in the future.”

Walker Buehler on Just Baseball Show

Buehler also mentioned that the idea of opposing batsmen being unfamiliar with Sheehan may have played a big part in his impressive debut, but is keeping an eye on how long that will last.

“You don’t have much luck in the big leagues but not being familiar with a guy and kind of having that funk about you I think is definitely an advantage and will help him for a long time and kind of give him.” That leash for finding out the big leagues, which apparently he did for at least one night, right. So we’ll see how it goes, but obviously it’s the best start anyone could ask for.”

Walker Buehler on Just Baseball Show

As a Dodger fan, I’m very excited to see how Sheehan progresses, and I look forward to seeing if he can match that feat in his next start, later scheduled for either the Freeway series in Anaheim or at home in Houston is week.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) — South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said Thursday he wants “every liberal jumping off bridges in San Francisco because Herschel Walker won” while campaigning for him in Georgia.

Graham said politics is tough, and unlike football, there’s “no helmet in politics.”

“All this crap they’re throwing at you coming from Los Angeles. 13 days before an election. All you got going for you is the people of Georgia,” Graham said.

Graham’s comments come after another woman said she was pressured to get an abortion by Walker.

“Why are they so focused on Herschel? They are afraid of Herschel Walker,” Graham said. “Because if Herschel Walker wins that means we’re not racist. And if you’re a republican, aren’t you tired of being called a racist all the time by everybody?”

Graham also mentioned South Carolina Senator Tim Scott and said “what liberals fear the most” is “a strong confident Black man being a Republican in Washington.”

“We’re going to have a bunch of Spanish women become Republican congressmen because the border is broken,” Graham said.

Graham compared the situation to accusations against now—Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“Right at the end, all this stuff comes out,” Graham said. “There’s another one. And another one. And another one. Well, you know what? You know how that movie ended? Kavanaugh stood there. Stood his ground. Trump had his back, and he’s on the Supreme Court.”

Graham said the people of Georgia will have Walker’s back and will send him to the US Senate.

(CBS local) – Forest fires have been and remain one of the greatest problems plaguing the United States of America and the world. As recently as this month, thousands of people were forced to evacuate their homes after a rapidly spreading fire hit Sacramento and Northern California. The story of the forest fires and the problems they cause our world is the subject of a new CBSN Films documentary by twice Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lucy Walker, titled Bring Your Own Brigade.

The film is a two-hour documentary that will premiere in limited numbers on Friday, August 6th, and will be screened on August 20th on Paramount +. CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith spoke to Walker about being in California to share about the forest fires, what she has learned from the experience and future of American forests.

“It’s been an amazing journey to make this film. I’ve made a lot of documentaries, but this one was about where I moved to. I moved to California and the hills were on fire. I come from England and thought about the last great fire in 1666, ”said Walker. “I thought we solved the fire and I come to California and thought why is the hill burning and what are we doing wrong. I have accompanied individual firefighters and local residents through these fatal incidents and it has been quite a long journey. In some places it was terrifying, moving and incredibly impressive. The film has many different chapters and the characters in the film are incredibly stunning. “

“Bring Your Own Brigade” celebrated its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2021 and shows you what a wild fire season in California looks like. It also shows what the personal toll of these natural disasters looks like.

“I really wanted to understand what it means to lose your home,” said Walker. “I couldn’t believe the decision that people would stay and defend their own home. I am a chicken. If there’s a fire, you can hear me having a panic attack in the film. I was scared, even if the fire was a bit far away. I was really impressed with the firefighters and first responders and the residents who chose and stayed to fight. “

Walker said the film’s biggest challenge is addressing all of the different levels of the fire problem in this country and around the world. The filmmaker hopes that viewers can learn more about the history of the forest fires, why they continue to be such a problem, and the physical and emotional toll they are taking on people around the world.

“I didn’t just want to give people a horror movie experience because it’s really worse than a horror movie, because it’s just the worst thing to be in those hellish experiences,” said Walker. I wanted people to understand exactly what was going on in these incidents. The audience can put together what is true and what is really happening. I think we can and will live better with the reality of fire in our landscape in the future. “
