Field Level Media

The Washington Commanders made the most noise at the NFL trade deadline, parting with starting defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young, the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Chicago Bears gave up a 2024 second-round draft pick for Sweat, and the San Francisco 49ers followed by trading a compensatory third-rounder for Young.

The two former first-round picks both will be free agents at the end of the league year.

Under the new ownership of Josh Harris — famed for green-lighting “the process” with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers — the 3-5 Commanders bid farewell to both Sweat and Young rather than trying to retain one or both on long-term deals. Tuesday’s trades will give Washington five picks in the first three rounds of the 2024 draft.

Young, 24, missed much of his second and third NFL seasons due to multiple injuries after winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020. He had five sacks in seven appearances (six starts) in 2023 and has tallied 14 sacks and 26 quarterback hits in 34 career games.

People are also reading…

The 49ers (5-3), currently on a three-game losing streak, added Young to an imposing front seven that already features defensive end Nick Bosa, Young’s former Ohio State teammate and the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Bosa was the No. 2 pick in the 2019 draft, one year before Washington drafted Young second overall.

Sweat, 27, has recorded 6.5 sacks in eight games this season and is one of seven players with at least 5.0 sacks in each of the past five seasons.

Part of the motive for the Commanders to make the trades was the cap crunch surrounding their haul of first-round picks at the position. Washington had previously signed defensive tackle Jonathan Allen to a four-year, $72 million extension and his interior linemate Daron Payne to a four-year, $90 million contract.

Other trades reported or officially announced Tuesday before the 4 p.m. ET deadline:

–The Minnesota Vikings acquired quarterback Josh Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round pick from the Arizona Cardinals for a 2024 sixth-round draft choice.

The Vikings lost quarterback Kirk Cousins when he sustained a season-ending torn right Achilles injury on Sunday.

The Cleveland Browns had traded Dobbs to Arizona at the close of training camp as the Cardinals were forced to start the season without Kyler Murray, still recovering from ACL surgery.

Dobbs, 28, completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 1,569 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games for Arizona. He has thrown for 2,025 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight picks in 16 games with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans and Cardinals.

–The Vikings also dealt left guard Ezra Cleveland to the AFC South-leading Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick, per multiple reports.

Cleveland, 25, missed the past two weeks with a foot injury, and former Denver Broncos starter Dalton Risner has held down the position in Minnesota.

Cleveland was a second-round draft pick by the Vikings in 2020, and he started all 17 games in both 2021 and 2022. He has made 53 appearances (49 starts) in his three-plus years in the NFL.

–The Detroit Lions acquired wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones from the Browns in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2025.

Peoples-Jones, 24, has eight catches for 97 yards in seven games this season for the Browns, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2020 draft. He hails from Detroit and played his college football at Michigan.

“We feel like he fits our style,” Lions coach Dan Campbell told reporters. “He’s smart and he can play multiple positions. … We just felt like he’d be a good fit for the team and the room.”

In four seasons with Cleveland, Peoples-Jones has 117 catches for 1,837 yards and eight touchdowns. His best season was 2022, with 61 catches for 839 yards and three touchdowns.

–The Buffalo Bills acquired veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas and a fifth-round draft pick from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a third-rounder on Tuesday, NFL Network and The Athletic reported.

Douglas, 29, heads to an AFC contender that lacked cornerback depth after Tre’Davious White suffered a torn Achilles and was lost for the season.

Douglas had one interception, one fumble recovery and 32 tackles in seven starts for the Packers (2-5) this season.

Green Bay is in rebuilding mode in Jordan Love’s first year at starting quarterback in place of Aaron Rodgers, while Buffalo (5-3) is in the thick of the AFC East race despite up-and-down performances.

The San Francisco 49ers hit the road this week for a Monday Night Football matchup against Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings. Currently 5-1, the Niners are the team to beat this 2023 NFL season. The 2-4 Vikings have struggled all season, but the Niners are battered and banged up.

The Niners offense has taken some serious hits this season and superstar receiver Christian McCaffrey won’t play this Monday. San Francisco is tough, resilient and talented, but the team is also a little worse for wear. It’s a perfect time for the Vikings to pull out a miracle performance. An underdog at home, the Minnesota Vikings are primed to upset the Niners. It would be a miracle, but it’s possible.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell

                Getty Images

Let’s talk about those Lions: The Detroit Lions come into Week 7 with a 5-1 record, putting them three games ahead of the Green Bay Packers for the top spot in the AFC North. The division dominated by Aaron Rodgers for so long now belongs to Jared Goff and the Lions. Fueled by Dan Campbell and a defense you’d hate to be on the other side of, the Lions rebuild is in full effect. Do the Lions have what it takes to go all the way to the Super Bowl? That remains to be seen, but we’re going to have fun watching them try.

Taylor Swift is the only thing bigger than the NFL: Taylor and Travis officially made it official this past weekend, hard launching their romance with surprise cameos on SNL and a public moment of PDA that sent Swifties and the Chiefs Kingdom swooning. As if fans weren’t already on the Chiefs bandwagon, Swift has made fans of entire universe of 12-year-old girls. If they weren’t already tuning in, they are now. With booming ratings, windbreaker sales galore and Taylor spotting at Arrowhead Stadium, Taylor Swift has proved that the only thing bigger than the NFL is her.

That 49ers defense is dangerous: Brock Purdy silenced naysayers last season when he took over after both QBs Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered season-ending injuries. Coach Shanahan traded Lance and gave Purdy the starting job this season with little trepidation that the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft had what it takes. Shanahan’s decision has paid off two weeks in, the team is undefeated and Purdy shows full command of the team. But the 49ers Nick Bosa-led defense is what could take this team to the Super Bowl. The Niners come into Week 7 with just loss. If this team can stay healthy, they have the makings of a Super Bowl contender and one of the most fun teams to watch this season.

At 2-4, the Vikings enter Week 7 one game behind the Los Angeles Rams for the final playoff spot in the NFC but will have a tall task to keep their dreams alive when they host the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.

This game could be a pivot point for Minnesota’s season as they decide what to do at the trade deadline.

If they win, they could be 3-4 ahead of a game with the Green Bay Packers that will kick off a winnable stretch of games. If they lose, they’ll be 2-5 as the rumors surrounding certain players intensifies.

With the 49ers shorthanded, it makes Monday’s game even more interesting.

But here are five bold predictions that will help determine whether the Vikings will pull off the upset in front of a national audience.

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — For all the mistakes the Minnesota Vikings made to waste a significant amount of their good work in the season opener, the feeling was strong on their sideline — and throughout the stadium, for that matter — that they would ultimately extract a victory from a tight game.

The Vikings turned that into an art form last year, after all, setting an NFL record with 11 wins in 11 decisions by eight points or fewer.

This time, those vital fourth-quarter plays just weren’t made.

“There’s an unwavering belief in this locker room. Even when there’s five minutes left and we were down by a field goal, we thought we had that one for sure,” tight end T.J. Hockenson said.

The offense went three-and-out on its last two possessions. The defense allowed a fourth-down conversion to extend Tampa Bay’s drive for the tiebreaking field goal and later let the Buccaneers drain the final 3:52 off the clock Sunday with a 15-yard facemask penalty and two third-down conversions for a 20-17 victory.

“We have to find a way to do something there whether it’s offense or defense,” safety Harrison Smith said. “We have too special of a group not to do something.”

The Vikings widely outgained the Buccaneers by an average of 5.9 to 3.6 yards per play, but their three first-half turnovers not only cost them a prime crack at two scores but gave Tampa Bay three easy points.

“A lot of credit to that team on the other side, but we beat ourselves,” running back Alexander Mattison said. “It’s hard to win a game that close when the turnover margin is three to zero. It’s one of those things we just have to make sure we clean up.”

That process has to happen quickly, because the Vikings play Thursday at Philadelphia.

“I’ve got nothing but confidence in our football team, and maybe even more so after watching the tape yesterday knowing how close things were to being maybe a different result,” coach Kevin O’Connell said.

WHAT’S WORKING

The connection between Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson — and the play calling by O’Connell that contributed to their potency — picked up where it left off last season. Eight different receivers caught passes, but four of the five completions by Cousins that topped 20 yards went to Jefferson.

WHAT NEEDS HELP

The blocking left much to be desired. The Buccaneers sent some well-timed blitzes at Cousins that weren’t picked up, most glaringly by safety Antoine Winfield Jr. on a strip-sack he recovered at the Minnesota 18. Mattison and Ty Chandler combined for just 34 yards on 14 carries.

“Efficiency is something we’re going to continue to strive for,” O’Connell said. “We did not get it done.”

STOCK UP

Jordan Addison became the seventh rookie in Vikings history to score in his NFL debut when he caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Cousins in the second quarter. He had four receptions for 61 yards.

STOCK DOWN

Right guard Ed Ingram remains the starter on the offensive line of greatest concern. He accidentally caused one of the fumbles by Cousins when he tried to seal the nose tackle with a block to his left and knocked the ball out of the quarterback’s hand with his left arm to thwart a third-and-2 running play at the Tampa Bay 26 in the first quarter.

“I don’t know how that happened. That was some type of freak accident,” Ingram said.

KEY NUMBER

9 — That’s how many times Jefferson has gained at least 150 receiving yards in 51 career games, the second most in NFL history in a player’s first four years. If Jefferson gets there twice more this season he’ll break Lance Alworth’s record.

INJURY REPORT

The shortened week will make it tougher for center Garrett Bradbury to recover in time from the back injury that forced him out in the first quarter. O’Connell said Monday that Bradbury’s status was day to day and that he was “feeling pretty good.” He had a similar injury last season that cost him five games.

Left tackle Christian Darrisaw was able to return from an ankle injury that sidelined him during the first half. Outside linebacker Marcus Davenport also has an ankle injury that landed him on the inactive list. Both players were listed on the estimated Monday injury report as limited participants had the Vikings held a practice. Players had the day off.

NEXT STEPS

The Vikings, who lost in Week 2 at Philadelphia last year after winning their opener, don’t have much margin for further errors, given opening wins by Detroit and Green Bay and a daunting early schedule. Their next three home games are against the Los Angeles Chargers, Kansas City and San Francisco.

Photo: Quinn Harris – USA TODAY Sports

We thought the offseason fireworks would wait until next week but the Minnesota Vikings showed some of their hand on Thursday. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and the new leaders at TCO Performance Center hired and retained multiple coaches for O’Connell’s staff on Thursday.

Most notedly, a new defensive coordinator — 65-year-old Ed Donatell — who’s spent the last three seasons in the same position for the Denver Broncos and has 42 years of NFL coaching experience. The Vikings also want to retain wide receivers coach, Keenan McCardell, who reportedly clicked really well with Justin Jefferson last season.

Source says the #Vikings will name Ed Donatell as their new defensive coordinator next week under new coach Kevin O’Connell. Donatell, 65, was Denver’s defensive coordinator the past three seasons.

— Chris Tomasson (@christomasson) February 10, 2022

Donatell Hire Signals Winds of Change.

The Ed Donatell hire isn’t a complete surprise, for a couple of reasons. First, his age and experience. It has been rumored since 36-year-old Kevin O’Connell was hired that the Vikings liked the idea of pairing the young, first-time head coach with a defensive coordinator who’s been around the block. Donatell and Adofo-Mensah worked together when their careers crossed paths in San Francisco and reportedly got along well.

But there are a few questions about Ed Donatell and it starts with the 3-4 defensive scheme he’s expected to implement. Look, the Minnesota Vikings have been a bad 4-3 defense for a couple of years, under Mike Zimmer. But as currently constructed, they’d be a much, much worse 3-4 defense.

Eric Kendrick’s No Longer Makes Sense?

On Thursday for example, Paul Allen and Ben Leber discussed on KFAN radio whether or not Eric Kendricks can be an effective linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. Kendricks has been an all-pro caliber player during most of his entire 7-year career, including a career-high 143 tackles in 2021.

But there are legitimate questions surrounding his size and capabilities both on the edge or in the middle of a 3-4 scheme, something Allen has clearly been struggling with. The conversation starts at the 21:00 mark below and goes for a few minutes. I only typed out one of the more interesting parts.

—

ALL: “If I say, ‘Eric Kendricks is not a 3-4 linebacker’, am I overstating it? Am I wrong? Because I’ve said it like 3 times. I just think he’s too small for the inside and he’s not…”

LIVER: “… and he’s not an outside guy, yeah. That’s the direction I’m going. I gotta be careful here because I think he’s such a good player, he’s such a good athlete and he has such amazing instincts. To say that he can’t make the transition, I think it’s foolish. I think it’s going to be difficult for him, though. It’s a defense, in my mind, that doesn’t speak to his specific skillset and I think it’s going to enhance the weaknesses that he has.”

“You are [as an inside LB in a 3-4 defense] taking on a fair amount of more blockers. We’re not talking fullbacks and tight ends. We’re talking guards and tackles. That is not his strong point. He does not have long arms. He’s not a thumper when it comes to getting off blocks. It doesn’t come natural for him to play off blocks and you do have to two-gap a lot as an inside linebacker [in a 3-4 scheme].”

92Noon Show – KFAN

If Eric Kendricks doesn’t fit the new scheme, the Vikings could cut him and save $7.5 million. I doubt it would come to that. Finding a trade partner who would deal for an all-pro caliber 4-3 middle linebacker shouldn’t be a problem. But if the Vikings decide to move on from Kendricks, who in the fuck are they going to keep?

Danielle Hunter

Well, the conversation starts with Danielle Hunter, who is due an $18 million roster bonus if he isn’t moved, cut or extended by March 20. If there’s any freak athlete on the Minnesota Vikings who would transition to a 3-4 scheme with relative ease, it’s a healthy Danielle Hunter.

But does the new regime see it that way? Hunter is an Andre Patterson product and posted a picture to social media of the two hugging after it was announced that Patterson was hired by the New York Giants on Thursday. Premier pass rushers are difficult to come by but the Vikings front office could save a lot of money and gain some legitimate draft capital, should they decide to move the oft-injured 4-3 defensive end before 3/20.

Easily expandable

If the Vikings choose a full-on defensive rebuild, which seems more and more likely as the days pass by, they could easily flip most of Mike Zimmer’s defense in just one offseason. From a contract standpoint (according to spotrac.com), the Vikings would save money by trading or cutting almost everyone.

Danielle Hunter: $18.6M Saved

Eric Kendricks: $7.5M Saved

Harrison Smith: $5.7M saved

Michael Pierce: $6.2M saved

—

Anthony Barr: FA

Patrick Peterson: FA

Some of those players may have trade value, like noted above. Expendable contracts would only make negotiations with other teams easier. The only contract on defense that is ‘uncuttable’ is Dalvin Tomlinson’s. If the Minnesota Vikings were to cut or trade Tomlinson, they’d have to pay a $10 million cap penalty. He’s only on the books for $7.5 million this season.

Both Tomlinson and Pierce, unlike others, would probably fit pretty well in a 3-4 scheme. Defensive backs like Cam Dantzler, Kris Boyd, Camryn Bynum and other playing on rookie deals don’t matter in this conversation. Their money is minimal and they have very little contract power.

In other words, the options are limitless. If Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Co want to blow up Mike Zimmer’s defense and start over from the ground up, it’ll be relatively easy for them to do. At least from a money standpoint.

Jim Harbaugh and the Vikings had an “exploratory conversation” on Saturday afternoon about Minnesota’s head-coaching vacancy, according to a report from NFL.com.

The Vikings “plan to conduct in-person second interviews for their head coaching job this week with multiple candidates” while “continuing to explore the possibility of hiring Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh,” Tom Pelissero detailed Sunday morning.

Per the report, Minnesota asked and receiver permission from Michigan to speak with Harbaugh. The conversation was held to “gauge his interest,” and while no additional meetings are currently scheduled, “Harbaugh remains a candidate for the job.”

“It wouldn’t be surprising if the Vikings bring him to the facility this week,” Pelissero wrote.

On Saturday, ProFootballTalk was first to report that Harbaugh was interviewing with the Vikings. That news came a day after Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider confirmed that rumors of mutual interest between the Vikings and Harbaugh “have merit.”

Speculation about Harbaugh’s future has been rampant since the Michigan football team concluded its best season in a decade. The Wolverines went 12-2, beat Ohio State, won the Big Ten Championship and made their first-ever College Football Playoff.

Harbaugh, who is under contract with Michigan through the 2025 season, took a well-publicized pay cut as part of his incentive-store deal last January. While Harbaugh has publicly said he wasn’t bothered by the contract — “I’d do it for free,” he once said of his job— his name has been linked to several NFL vacancies in recent weeks.

The latest, and the one that now appears to have the most steam, is in Minnesota.

The Vikings fired coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman after Minnesota finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the Vikings’ new general manager, was on staff with the San Francisco 49ers during the end of Harbaugh’s tenure there.

Earlier this week, Adofo-Mensah explained how he’s approaching Minnesota’s coaching search.

“We’re going to dive into this head-coaching search and bring a partner to me and this organization that’s going to lead us to where we want to go,” Adofo-Mensah said. “We’ve had some initial conversations, but those have just been initial; obviously, we’re going to dive more into it as the week goes on.”

The Vikings have not commented on the Harbaugh report, but the organization says it has interviewed Nathaniel Hackett, Dan Quinn, Kellan Moore, Jonathan Gannon and Todd Bowles for the role of head coach.

Sunday’s NFL.com report said the Vikings this week will conduct several second interviews with NFL coordinators “while continuing to explore the possibility of hiring Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.”

about IFTTT

Note from Zennie62Media and OaklandNewsNow.com: This video blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media, Inc. network for video blogging systems for mobile media that was launched in June 2018 by Zennie62Media, Inc .s new and innovative approach to news media production. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a YouTube channel. If the video matches the San Francisco 49ers search pattern, it will be automatically uploaded and formatted to the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and custom social media pages. The overall goal here is, in addition to our smartphone-enabled real-time reporting of news, interviews, observations and events anywhere in the world and within seconds, not hours – the use of the existing YouTube social graphic on any topic in the world. Now messages are reported with the smartphone and also by advertising current content on YouTube: There is no need for heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop or a camera team to film what is already on YouTube. The secondary goal is faster and very inexpensive production and distribution of media content. We have found that there is a discrepancy between post length and time to product and revenue generated. This means that the problem is much smaller, but by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system’s network encoding and is looking for interested content and media technology partners.
