Ever since Garry Tan came on as Y Combinator CEO last year, there have been changes.

Last March, Tan cut its late-stage investing and laid off 17 investors, and he shrank the size of YC’s batches. Less known is that the startup accelerator also moved its headquarters. After spending 17 years operating out of Mountain View, Y Combinator moved its operations up north to the Dogpatch neighborhood in San Francisco and into Pier 70, according to city records reviewed by Fortune and confirmed by Y Combinator.

In an interview, Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan said it was important to him that YC be as close to the cutting edge of artificial intelligence innovation as possible (OpenAI and Anthropic and “a lot of the top talent” in artificial intelligence are in San Francisco versus Silicon Valley, he says). Not to mention—the majority of Y Combinator partners, including himself, live in San Francisco, he adds.

These days, “you sort of have to be in San Francisco,” Tan says, noting the importance of the accidental run-ins that happen when people are out and about. “Chances are the people around you are thinking about and talking about technology, and especially A.I. That’s really special,” Tan says. He also pointed out that YC data shows that startups that were built in San Francisco were more likely to succeed than their peers.

The move from Mountain View, which happened in the spring, right before YC welcomed its summer batch of startups, is also part of Y Combinator’s broader effort to bring its program back to being fully in-person post-COVID. Y Combinator started doing so in Summer 2022, though its demo days have still been remote. (YC says its next Demo Day will be partially in-person at Pier 70, though presentations will still be online)

Tan doesn’t just want founders back in the Bay Area: He wants them very close by. The Y Combinator CEO says the accelerator is highly encouraging founders to get places in the Dogpatch or Potrero Hill, or at least nearby. “I think it’s actually going to be really good that people know to be in walking distance of each other, and I think the connections between the founders are just going to be that much stronger,” he said, noting that he hopes Y Combinator upping its check size to $500,000 in 2022, up from $125,000, will help founders be able to afford the high rent.

Story continues

The changes come as Tan continues to get more involved in San Francisco politics: Donating to local elections, hosting gatherings, and, of course his ongoing slew of social media posts about what he describes as “San Francisco’s corrupt political machine.”

Tan is not one to pull punches: “I’m ready for him to leave public office,” he says of Dean Preston, a San Francisco Supervisor, who is running for re-election. “He certainly hasn’t been serving the needs of tech. On the other hand, I don’t even think that’s the reason to get rid of him. His hatred of tech covers up all the things that cause San Francisco to be so derelict in its responsibility to the citizens of all classes.” (In a statement, Supervisor Preston said that he was proud of his record “fighting for tenants, affordable housing, unions, food security, and an equitable San Francisco” and said that some of his strongest supporters were people who work in tech.)

While Tan may be very critical of San Francisco’s current political leadership, in typical Silicon Valley fashion, he says he is optimistic about the years ahead, particularly with upcoming elections this March and November. And he says that he has personally witnessed the tech community rallying together right now: “We’re coming together. We’re organizing. We’re actually creating our own media,” he said. “When you go to dinners, that’s one of the things we talk about now, and like two, three years ago in tech, I don’t think that that was something we were doing.”

I asked whether Tan would ever consider running for some kind of office himself.

“Maybe in 20 years,” he told me, adding later: “On the other hand, my wife said that she’ll divorce me if I run for Mayor, so I don’t think anytime soon.”

More unicorn news…Discord has laid off 17% of its staff—170 people, according to a memo CEO Jason Citron sent to staff that was seen by The Verge. The announcement was made yesterday. “We have to face some hard truths,” Citron wrote in the memo, according to The Verge. “We grew quickly and expanded our workforce even faster, increasing by 5x since 2020. As a result, we took on more projects and became less efficient in how we operated.”

An important programming note…With an ever-changing array of emotions, I wanted to let readers know that I will no longer be writing Term Sheet as of the end of this month. Don’t worry: I’m not leaving Fortune—just pivoting into a new role where I’ll be writing more venture capital and startup features, scoops, and investigations for our tech desk, outside this newsletter (though I imagine some of my work will still be featured in here every so often!). I’m fortunate to be able to leave you in the more-than-capable hands of Allie Garfinkle, who you’ve already gotten to know over this week. She is knowledgeable, curious, relentless, and an absolute joy. We’re lucky to have her here, and so are you. Don’t worry: I won’t get all sentimental just yet. You’re still stuck with me for another two weeks.

Please note that Term Sheet is taking Monday off in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We’ll be back in your inboxes on Tuesday.

Until then,

“Hi, my name is Lora, I’m a first-year medical student, and I live in San Francisco.” This simple sentence, my brief introduction at the start of a meeting, reverberated in my mind. Hearing myself speak these words for the first time was jarring, the identities of “medical student” and “San Francisco resident” still feeling totally foreign to me.

My first several months of school have elicited a wide range of emotions. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to study medicine. I sometimes feel overwhelmed with the amount of information I am expected to learn. I also feel the enormity of the responsibility I am shouldering as a future physician.

I also feel an acute sense of displacement having moved across the country for the first time. I was born in Duluth, raised in the Northland, and attended college in rural Minnesota. This community instilled within me the values that guide my work and provided me with the spaces I needed to learn and grow.

And yet, like many young people, I have found an incredible sense of fulfillment and adventure in my cross-country move. San Francisco offers diverse cultural opportunities, the ability to study at an incredible institution, and, admittedly, much better weather than Duluth. For now, San Francisco is where I am living. But, when medical school ends, I will be faced with the question: Where should I call home?

It was my upbringing in the Northland that cemented my desire to pursue a medical career, particularly seeing how my family was impacted by provider shortages in our rural community. Just in October,

      Essentia announced

it was ending urgent care at its Hermantown clinic, citing staffing challenges.

A 2022 Minnesota Department of Health survey found that there is a growing shortage of primary-care physicians in rural parts of the state. While metropolitan areas have an average of 20.3 pediatricians per 100,000 people, isolated rural communities have just 0.5. Physicians who practice in rural Minnesota are also on average 10 years older than their urban counterparts, and one in three rural physicians plans to retire within five years. This already urgent problem of rural-physician shortages will only compound in the coming years.

It is imperative we find new ways to recruit and retain doctors in rural Minnesota. We can call upon our elected officials to support legislation such as the bipartisan Rural America Health Corps Act, which aims to incentivize more health professionals to work long term in rural communities.

Returning to the question of where I should call home, on the one hand, the idea of coming back to the Northland to practice as a physician seems to be the culmination of all I have worked toward. It would be as much an expression of gratitude to the place that raised me as it would be a gift to reimmerse myself in this grounded, kind, and hard-working community. And yet, moving away from an urban environment means forgoing many of the compelling cultural, academic, and social opportunities that come with living in a city like San Francisco.

I’m not sure where my career will take me. I do know that no matter where I choose to live and work, I will continue to be an advocate for the health and well-being of our community, and I am certain that my fellow Northlanders will choose to do the same.

Lora Randa is a Duluth native studying to be a doctor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

With 6:33 remaining in the third quarter Thursday night, it was time to put Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles on television. That’s what Amazon Prime Video’s telecast did following the commercial break after running back D’Onta Foreman’s touchdown run for the Bears.

Next to Poles was a graphic breaking down the trade he made with the Carolina Panthers involving the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, which the Panthers used on quarterback Bryce Young.

“A lot to talk about in terms of the trade,” play-by-play broadcaster Al Michaels said. “Ryan Poles with Chicago, they have a treasure trove. Look at this. I mean not since, I think Willie Sutton was robbing banks, did you see something like that.”

Michaels then went through some of the details of the trade.

“And there are pieces on this defense already that you like about where they are and where they’re heading,” analyst Kirk Herbstreit said. “You add on what they’re going to be able to do in next year’s draft — not just in the first round but really the first four or five rounds. They’ve got a lot of picks.”

GO DEEPER

Greenberg: Bears continue their dominance of ‘Thursday Night Football.’ (Don’t ask about Sundays)

After trading for defensive end Montez Sweat, the treasure trove isn’t as much as Herbstreit hinted at during the broadcast. The Bears have six picks in the first five rounds. It includes two in the first and two in the fourth. But his point still was made. The Bears and Poles are in a great position to build out their roster.

What Michaels and Herbstreit hit on at that moment in the third quarter seemed to be an important theme of Prime Video’s broadcast of the Bears’ 16-13 win against the Panthers on “Thursday Night Football.”

It’s always interesting to hear what national broadcasts say about teams because what’s said typically comes after ample time spent talking to players, coaches and front-office members during production meetings and more.

When Herbstreit and Michaels weren’t hanging out with Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce for a full quarter, they were generally speaking positively about rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent and what the Bears could be building. During the pregame show, Michael Smith, the former ESPN host, explained what Poles inherited from former GM Ryan Pace.

“The Bears lacked picks, cap space, youth and talent,” Smith said. “Poles had to reset the roster, and that process takes more than two offseasons. There were hardly any first-rounders around here when Poles arrived.”

Smith then hit on Poles’ acquisition of Sweat.

“That was a move to get more blue-chip talent in the building,” he said.

And then came this.

“So Justin Fields is under contract for next year and the Bears have the option for the fifth year — and they still believe in him,” Smith said. “A lot can change between now and the draft. But the Bears know this roster still needs to undergo a lot of upgrades around whomever is under center.”

That was Bagent on Thursday night. By the end of the night, Bagent was the one sitting with Charissa Thompson, Tony Gonzalez, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Andrew Whitworth and Richard Sherman as Bears fans chanted “(Expletive) Green Bay” and “Fire Getsy.”

Bagent won. The Bears’ Division II starter was better than the Panthers’ Heisman Trophy winner.

“Overall, they’re going in the right direction,” Gonzalez said after the game. “And this kid, I couldn’t be happier for him, especially coming out of the Division II level to be in this spotlight, prime time, it was good for him.”

Fitzpatrick’s favorite throw from Bagent was the rookie’s final one of the game. Bagent hit receiver Darnell Mooney for an 8-yard gain between two defenders on third-and-7 from Carolina’s 38 in the final 90 seconds.

“Luke Getsy, that last third-and-7 of the game, he trusted Bagent with the ball in his hands,” Fitzpatrick said. “It wasn’t just a handoff and let’s punt this thing away. He allowed him to drop back. It wasn’t a rollout. It wasn’t a, ‘Let’s give him an option to run, let’s give him an option to throw.’ He dropped back, found Mooney, got the first down and iced the game. That tells you a lot about Luke Getsy and what he thinks about this kid.”

Fields, though, is the Bears’ starter when he’s healthy. Coach Matt Eberflus said as much after the game. Maybe that’s what he had up his sleeve.

GO DEEPER

Bears predictions at NFL midseason: Matt Eberflus stays; no Justin Fields decision until May

After the game, Gonzalez suggested the Bears should take USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the first pick if they have it and then trade their second first-rounder for more selections. Everyone disagreed with him. It might be best to stick with Fields or Bagent. Poles simply has more work to do.

“You got a chance this year to use up all that draft leverage to stack this football team with talent,” Whitworth said.

“Because you end up in a situation that Bryce Young is in with not a lot of talent,” Sherman said. “The cupboard is pretty empty. He’s trying his best. You can’t even tell if he’s talented or not because the team is so bad. You get a good quarterback in there and he starts to think he’s bad, he loses his confidence, and you can’t build a good team around him, and then people start to rush to judgment.”

Sounds familiar, right?

It was the Bears last season — Year 1 of Poles’ rebuild. Fields didn’t have much to work with in his second season.

True, the Bears beat only a one-win Panthers team, but Sweat, nickelback Kyler Gordon, right tackle Darnell Wright and others drafted, signed or acquired by Poles played well in the victory. That includes Bagent, who is 2-2 as the Bears’ starter. He wasn’t great but good enough against Carolina. He completed 20 of 33 passes for only 162 yards, but he didn’t turn the ball over or take a sack.

Whitworth said before the game that Fields or Bagent should be the starter next season for the Bears.

As everyone seemed to suggest at times throughout Prime’s broadcast, Poles is in an ideal position to add talent around his quarterback — whomever that is — and on defense.

“Because I believe the way you build a football team in the NFL is to continue to stockpile talent, and that’s really the winning model,” Whitworth said. “When you look in San Francisco, when you look at Philly, where Jason (Kelce) plays, it’s about the guys that play around him just as much as it is their quarterback when you want to win year in and year out. So you look at their draft pick capital, maybe trading one of those picks to move back in the first a little further and stockpiling more picks to keep more talent because this team is a lot further away than just one dynamic quarterback.”

SAN JOSE — James Salata, head of Garden City Construction, decided that enough was enough when it came to an abandoned historic church in downtown San Jose covered with a tattered tarp.

“This is really gnawing at me,” Salata said Tuesday as he watched his construction crew finish up a wide-ranging job this week to transform the blighted church property into a little less of an eyesore in downtown San Jose.

The historic structure on Salata’s mind is the First Church of Christ, Scientist at 43 East St. James Street. A growing number of observers, activists and neighbors have begun to complain about the church’s disrepair under its years-long ownership by a China-based real estate firm and the nebulous oversight by city staffers and code enforcement officers.

The church’s exterior has been exposed for years to fierce winter storms and blazing summer sunshine. Winds have steadily shredded the makeshift tarp.

This week, alarmed by the looming prospect of the fall and winter months, Salata took matters into his own hands and dispatched construction workers from subcontractor BrandSafway to undertake considerable work at the church.

First Church of Christ, Scientist is on a site owned by Z&L Properties, a China-based real estate company whose principal executive is Zhang Li, a key figure in a bribery scandal involving a top former San Francisco official.

Salata was able to gain access to the site because he had prior permission from Z&L to undertake some work on the inside of the church. BrandSafway owned the scaffolds and was reclaiming its equipment because Z&L didn’t come through with payments for that work. In the process, the tarp was removed.

Salata realizes the cost of some or much of this week’s work will come out of his pocket.

“I just decided to take the risk,” Salata said. “I couldn’t take it any longer, seeing that eyesore out there every day.”

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan hopes the building can be saved.

“It’s great to see some progress just a week after we announced stricter accountability measures for blighted properties,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said.

But Bob Staedler, principal executive with land-use consultancy Silicon Valley Synergy, and a long-time critic of the city staff’s inaction on the property, praised Salata’s efforts.

“Jim Salata is a true steward of San Jose,” Staedler said. “He really stepped up. All credit to him. The city of San Jose should have started this work years ago. Jim Salata is doing the city a favor.”

Z&L Properties had agreed to renovate and restore the church and make it a key component of a project of two housing towers next to St. James Park. Z&L never built the housing high-rises and did not renovate the church.

The church site is one of several failed or faltering projects that Z&L had proposed or launched in downtown San Jose.

Federal prosecutors reached a settlement in a criminal case against Zhang. The deal allowed Zhang to return home to China after paying a fine.

For months, city officials have pondered — but have yet to approve — a stopgap $200,000 plan to remove the tarp and protect the church from the elements. The city is paying for it out of its own coffers because it has yet to coax an agreement from Zhang to finance the work.

Salata said he also attempted to convince Z&L to pay him to do badly needed work on the property that would fully protect the church.

“I tried to negotiate with Z&L, but ‘we have no money’ was their answer,” Salata said. “I made them a sweetheart deal to get this fixed up. They said they had no money for the work.”

Now, the contractors have patched up the distinctive dome on the roof, removed the tarp, cleaned up small bits of plastic that could become a pollution risk during the rainy season, and done some shoring up work as well as improved the drainage on the site.

“Hallelujah! this is what we were hoping for,” said Ben Leech, executive director of the Preservation Action Council of San Jose. “The church is still standing and in remarkably good condition because it’s been left to rot for several years. Everyone can see this is an important piece of architecture we are trying to save.”

On Tuesday, several workers were busy removing scaffolds that had clung to the side of the church for years.

More work needs to be done, however, Salata warned.

“The handoff for this now goes to Z&L and the city staff,” Salata said.

Among the immediate tasks that are needed to fully protect the church: the completion of some weatherproofing on a long upright section that is closest to the intersection of East St. James Street and North Second Street, Salata said.

“Z&L needs to follow through on their responsibility for protecting this historical landmark in the heart of our city,” Mahan said.

While more work needs to be done, for now, the old church is no longer obscured by a steadily crumbling tarp.

“People can see how beautiful this building is,” Salata said.
