Some sort of sidewalk collapse occurred Thursday morning over a utility trench near the Lower Haight neighborhood, trapping one person underground.

The San Francisco Fire Department undertook a rescue effort near the intersection of Divisadero and Oak streets Thursday morning. A collapse occurred just before 10:30 a.m., and the SFFD’s public information officer, Captain Jonathan Baxter, tweeted that there was one person trapped under an estimated eight feet of dirt.

The nature of the trench or what kind of construction or other activity had been going on there is not clear. Firefighters were pictured in the area focused on the sidewalk and street just outside a garage, where they were digging to remove dirt. The garage can be seen below, between two Victorian buildings on the 1100 block of Oak Street.

Photo: Google Street View

Motorists are being told to avoid the area, and traffic is backing up on both Oak and Divisadero.

ABC 7 has live helicopter footage of the rescue effort.

Update: According to Captain Baxter, a “sidewalk collapse occurred during utility construction work.”

Update 2: Baxter confirmed as of around 12:15 p.m. that rescuers had reached the trapped individual, and he was deceased. The operation then transitioned into a body-recovery effort.

The nature of the work that was being performed in the trench and by whom has not yet been reported.

Rescuers on scene at Oak and Divisadero have reached the victim and confirmed the rescue has transitioned into recovery. SF Medical Examiner is on scene and the cause of the incident will be under investigation.
SFFD will remain on-scene until recovery operations are complete. pic.twitter.com/HvvFvTi8MF

San Francisco’s historic town-homes are beloved for their charm, but they pose distinct design challenges. “A lot of them are sandwiched between other old homes, so they’re long and narrow, with funky layouts, giant blank walls, and bay windows that are very hard to furnish,” explains Brit Epperson, founder of Studio Plow architecture and interior design firm.

When two of Epperson’s longtime clients—tech entrepreneurs with a newborn baby girl—purchased a classic 1920 townhouse in Pacific Heights, she jumped at the chance to transform it into their vision of a modern dream home. “The most recent remodel was a little more traditional than their aesthetic,” she says, with espresso-stained red oak floors, chrome fixtures, and cool gray walls. “But it was all done in really beautiful materials that were in great shape.” She knew she could transform the three-story, five-bedroom house to match their tastes, but there was one problem: The couple’s move-in date was only five weeks away.

To make the biggest impact fast, Epperson focused on refinishing the home’s old bones. First, she sanded and bleached the floors, then gave everything—from the casework to the crown molding to the walls and ceilings—a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee paint. She replaced the chrome with minimalist black fixtures but kept the white Calacatta marble countertops, Shaker-style kitchen cabinets, and classic bathroom vanities intact. “We didn’t have the luxury of time, plus it felt incredibly wasteful to toss and replace them,” she explains. Leaving those traditional elements ended up being a blessing in disguise: “It gave us really great layers and textures to build on.”

For starters, that backdrop created the perfect canvas for the couple’s ever-growing collection of original art and modern furniture. The mix includes Togo, Tacchini, and Mario Bellini sofas, as well as custom pieces from Studio Plow and wall hangings from the wife’s home country of Mexico. Many items were handpicked for their soft, sculptural silhouettes, and Epperson notes that everything is toddlerproof. “All of the materials and textures were thought through,” she says. “Nothing is hyperprecious.”

The design centers around the intention of being a respite, a retreat from urban life.

With its rich hues, tactile materials, and intricate shapes, the home is elegant but not untouchable. It’s meant to evolve as the family grows. “We tried to build a palette that’s easy to tweak and shift,” Epperson explains. “The energy is very calm and grounded, yet creative.”

The Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop at Disney California Adventure is “moving” from Pacific Wharf to San Fransokyo Square, and in preparation, the iconic animated mural behind the serving area has been changed to focus on the fictional “Big Hero 6” city rather than the famous brand’s true home, San Francisco.

Ghirardelli San Francisco mural

From a distance you might not even see that a change has been made, but if you look closer, things are different.

Effects take place on the 3D mural. The tram runs, lights go on and off, and an “earthquake” shakes the mural. The Ghirardelli Building appears to be falling apart, although the original survived the 1906 earthquake with minimal damage.

Check out the earthquake effect below.

A fish-shaped wind turbine straight out of the Walt Disney Animation Studios film flies high above the landscape (including Ghirardelli Square, now complete with Japanese characters on the signage), with the Ghiradelli logo printed on its side. Rita’s turbine mixers are topped with a giant, dimensional prop that also resembles these.

Compare these photos to the old version, pictured below, from the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop’s opening in 2012 (when the world-famous Hot Fudge Sundae was only $8.25 instead of $15.75).

Cherry blossoms adorn the upper center portion of the background. In Japanese culture, cherry blossoms are particularly symbolic, representing human life, beauty, and more.

The Ghiradelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop is open daily and is located in what is now Pacific Wharf at Disney California Adventure. It will be part of San Fransokyo Square when it officially opens to guests on August 31, 2023, but has also promised to introduce some new menu items inspired by the new theme. Details on the new items have yet to be released.

Pacific Wharf’s main entrance bridge is currently closed for the installation of the torii gate towers as it is being converted to the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge.

. The port of San Fransokyo Cervecería is also officially opened. Additional dining and shopping options will be available in the weeks that follow until mid-August, when the remodeling is expected to be complete.

Venues from the Cappuccino Cart to the Bakery Tour will also be decked out with street art and colorful banners in celebration of the Big Hero 6 team.

Guests can interact with Hiro and Baymax (who talk!) in front of the Hamada Bot Shop.

Near the Hamada Bot Shop is the San Fransokyo Maker’s Market, a store featuring unique clothing, home goods and more from Baymax and friends. As can be seen in the concept art above, the shelves of the market stand on top of robot storage boxes displaying decommissioned combat robots. Hiro’s Megabot will be up in the rafters.

Opposite the Maker’s Market, vending machines will feature gold medallions with Baymax motifs and other San Fransokyo images.

Dining options include current Pacific Wharf venues and new options inspired by Asian cuisine and Big Hero 6.

The second bakery café run by Hiro’s loving aunt, Aunt Cass Café serves soups in freshly baked Boudin sourdough bread bowls and more inspired by Japanese cuisine. On the outside of this fast food restaurant you’ll find a mural of Aunt Cass’ happy house cat, Mochi.

San Francisco regulators have pushed back a vote to lift San Francisco’s ban on city officials doing business with companies headquartered in states that have enacted anti-LGBTQ laws, abortion bans or restricted voting access in recent years. They did so despite objections from local minorities and LGBTQ entrepreneurs who fear it will have a negative impact on them.

Meanwhile, District 8 gay warden Rafael Mandelman on Tuesday introduced an ordinance to completely abandon the city’s policy of banning travel to and doing business in conservative states. He was joined as co-sponsors by Supervisors Catherine Stefani of District 2 and Hilary Ronen of District 9, and Board Chairperson Aaron Peskin, representing District 3.

“Removing 12X will increase bidding competition and reduce contract costs, saving San Francisco tens of millions or more each year. And it will better advance our social policy goals by allowing us to engage with the actual communities impacted by restrictive LGBTQ, abortion, voting and human rights policies,” Mandelman said in announcing the regulation. “I got it As I said before, the best pressure we can put on red states is to show that progressive San Francisco can be governed effectively.”

District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safaí had requested that the vote on his ordinance be postponed to the March 14 Board of Supervisors meeting to continue meeting with business leaders in the city. Last November, he introduced the ordinance to abolish the contracting ban.

But when the Regulators’ Rules Committee, of which Safaí is a part, finally raised the city policy overhaul known as 12X at its February 13 meeting, local business leaders complained that they had not been consulted on the matter. Safaí promised to meet with them to hear their concerns and asked for the continuation at Tuesday’s full board meeting to continue those discussions.

“We’ve had some of those talks, but I want to give space to continue those talks,” said Safaí, who voted to introduce the 12X policy when it was first proposed.

The 11 supervisors voted unanimously to allow progress, although District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar suggested that more time was needed to gather community input on the 12X policy change. It also includes a ban on most taxpayer-funded city breaks in the 30 states now covered by the directive, although the travel ban would not be affected by Safaí’s regulation.

“If we’re going to reform it, we have to do it wisely,” Melgar said, adding that she feared two weeks wasn’t “enough time to get the community involved.”

District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton reiterated his opposition to the proposal, which he originally made during the hearing before the Rules Committee, of which he is vice chair. A major objection made by Walton is that changing the 12X policy would result in rewards for large multinational corporations headquartered in states that have legislated against the values that support San Francisco and its residents.

“In my opinion, this will only support the people who support these discriminatory laws,” Walton said.

The 12X Directive was first enacted in 2016 and initially included only those states that had previously passed laws that discriminated against their LGBTQ residents. In 2019, the policy was extended to states that restricted abortion and again in 2021 to states with election-busting laws. California also has a law that bans most taxpayer-funded travel to states that have passed anti-LGBTQ laws in the past eight years, but does not prohibit contracts with companies in those states.

With more than half the country now on San Francisco’s blacklist, critics argue it’s hampering city governments’ ability to find qualified contractors. They also insist it increases the cost of projects because companies that could make the work less expensive won’t bid for them at all if they’re in a banned state.

Critics of 12X, like District 6 gay supervisor Matt Dorsey, also claim that it has failed in its goal of convincing lawmakers in affected states to repeal the laws that put them on San Francisco’s ban list . According to a 16-page memo the city government’s office sent to regulators earlier this month, the implications of the 12X policy in other states are “not clear.”

It concluded that the 12X policy created “additional administrative burdens for city staff and vendors and unintended consequences for San Francisco citizens, such as: B. the restriction of enrichment and development opportunities”.

The memo came at the request of five supervisors who asked the city bureau to review the 12X policy last October. Among them was Mandelman, who supports updating the ban but had been working on his own ordinance for it.

“I don’t think the right way to make a change is to flip the bird and walk away,” he told the Bay Area Reporter, writing last week that supervisors are slowing down their decision-making process on the 12X should policy.

In a letter sent to the Rules Committee and shared with all supervisors, the San Francisco Latino Black Builders Association questioned whether there was any data showing that a change to the 12X policy was warranted. It asked supervisors to require city authorities to prove that work efficiency was reduced or costs increased as a result of the contract ban.

“We support the intent of the original regulation and the support it offers to LGBTQ communities across the country. We also approve of the idea of supporting local and Californian businesses,” wrote Anne Cervantes, a founder and co-chair of the association.

But former District 8 gay supervisor Scott Wiener, now a senator, is urging current supervisors to repeal the entire 12X policy he originally wrote. It is no longer a sound public policy, he claims.

“When I penned 12X, we believed that a coalition of cities and states would form to create real consequences for states that enact these despicable, hateful laws,” Wiener said. “However, as it turns out, that coalition never formed and the full potential impact of those policies never materialized. Instead, San Francisco is now penalizing businesses in other states — including LGBTQ owners, women owners, and people of color. owned corporations — for the sins of their far-right governments. Additionally, the City of San Francisco employees are unable to fly to a large number of states for critical needs, whether collaborating on HIV prevention and treatment strategies or helping working together on critical transportation strategies, it is time to acknowledge that this policy has not worked and we must back down.”

UPDATED 2/28/23 to include the new regulation put in place to repeal the entire 12X policy.

The San Francisco 49ers selected USC edge-rusher Drake Jackson with the No. 61 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft on Friday.

The B/R NFL Scouting Department ranks Jackson seventh overall among edge-rushers in this class and No. 46 jumpsuit. His per comparison is the Denver Broncos’ Randy Gregory.

Jackson amassed 37 tackles and five sacks in 10 games for the Trojans last year. He’s a 6’3″, 254-pound edge-rusher who should make an immediate impact in San Francisco.

Here’s a look at how the 49ers’ defensive depth chart shakes out with Jackson aboard.

49ers Defensive Depth Chart

LDE: Drake Jackson, Samson Ebukam, Charles Omenihu, Alex Barrett

LDT: Javon Kinlaw, Kevin Givens, Maurice Hurst

RDT: Arik Armstead, Hassan Ridgeway, Chris Slayton

RDE: Nick Bosa, Kerry Hyder, Jordan Willis

MLB: Fred Warner, Azeez Al Shaair, Oren Burks

OLB: Dre Greenlaw, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Curtis Robinson

CB: Ambry Thomas, Deommodore Lenoir, Ka’dar Hollman

CB: Charvarius Ward, Dontae Johnson

SCB: Emmanuel Moseley, Darqueze Dennard

SS: Jimmie Ward, Talanoa Hufanga

FS: George Odum, Tarvarius Moore

Note

Jackson appears to be a replacement for Dee Ford, as Sam Monson of PFF noted:

Sam Monson @PFF_Sam

Nobody in this draft class has the picture-perfect dip and bend as an edge rusher that Drake Jackson has.

Goes to the 49ers to become their new Dee Ford.

That’s an outstanding pick here.

Ford is still on the roster, but per 49ers general manager John Lynch, his time with San Francisco appears that it will be over soon.

“I don’t see a lot of hope with him being a factor for us on the field moving forward,” Lynch said at the NFL Annual Meeting (h/t Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area).

“I think we tried to be as patient as possible, and no fault of Dee, he just ran into a bad situation with his back, where he couldn’t get healthy.”

Unfortunately, Ford has played in just seven games over the past two years due to injuries. He was placed on injured reserve in Week 7 of last year.

Per 49ers’ senior reporter Keiana Martin after the move was announced, “the veteran pass rusher has been dealing with an intricate back and neck injury that kept him sidelined for all but one game in 2020.”

Ford signed a five-year, $85.5 million contract with the 49ers during the 2019 offseason after an excellent run in Kansas City that ended with a 13-sack campaign in 2018.

Now it appears Jackson will get his chance to start opposite All-Pro end Nick Bosa on the 49ers’ defensive front. San Francisco had one of the better defenses in football last year, allowing the ninth-fewest points per game.

The 49ers were also excellent in the playoffs, holding the high-powered Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams to just 47 total points.

Adding Jackson should only make the 49ers better on that side of the ball as he joins a unit that also includes Bosa, Fred Warner and Arik Armstead among other standouts.
