Though he didn’t hear his name in the 2021 NFL Draft, former Ohio State linebacker Justin Hilliard signed an uncovered free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers. The news was first reported by Lettermen Row.

Hilliard, a former five-star candidate from Cincinnati St. Xavier, suffered numerous injuries, including torn biceps, meniscus and Achilles, during his career with the Buckeyes. In 47 games, he still managed to record 84 tackles, nine tackles against loss, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions and one forced fumble.

Hilliard was granted a sixth year eligibility due to the injuries and took this opportunity to score the best season of his career with 33 tackles, five losing team-level tackles, and an interception that took place in the end zone during the season’s Big Ten Championship Game wins against Northwestern. He was also named team captain by his colleagues.

Hilliard is the third former Buckeye linebacker to land with an NFL team this week Pete Werner and Baron Browningdesigned by the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos in the second and third rounds of design.

In San Francisco, he’ll join Nick Bosa’s defensive end and run back Trey sermonwho was drafted by the 49ers in the third round on Friday evening.
