Uber is exploring the idea of launching a service similar to TaskRabbit where folks can call on someone to carry out everyday tasks that they themselves don’t want to do, according to a recent Bloomberg report.

Details of the possible service, which could be called “Chore,” were discovered by developer Steve Moser in code in Uber’s iPhone app.

It revealed that a user would be able to hire a “tasker” for a minimum of one hour after specifying a job that needs doing and when the hired person should arrive to start on it.

“Similar to a ride or a food delivery within Uber’s application, the code indicates the user will be asked to specify the address of the request, review their submission, and then press a button to request it,” Bloomberg says in its report, adding that Chore will then calculate the fee based on the time needed to complete the job.

Uber started out as a ridesharing service and the on-demand taxi service still drives most of its income. But it later moved into meal delivery as part of efforts to broaden its revenue stream. Launching a TaskRabbit-like service would mark another effort to improve its bottom line, though it should be stated that at the current time Uber has said nothing official about rolling out such a service. If it does proceed, the likelihood is that Chore would initially operate as a trial service in select locations before deciding whether to make it a permanent part of its platform. As it’s recently been spotted in code, such a test could be coming soon.

TaskRabbit launched in 2008 to offer people an easy way to hire people to do various jobs such as home repairs, cleaning, gardening, electrical help, plumbing and — perhaps no surprise considering it was acquired by IKEA in 2017 — furniture assembly.

Ride-sharing giant Uber’s initially silent attempts to vacate much of its San Francisco office space have grown louder as the company officially lists nearly a third of its new corporate center in the Mission Bay neighborhood.

The move is one of the latest among US firms looking to downsize as executives shift priorities amid an uncertain economy and the rise in hybrid work patterns due to the pandemic.

According to marketing materials provided to CoStar News, Uber is subleasing the entire 300,000 square foot space in one of four buildings it uses for its global headquarters. The company has engaged JLL to find a subtenant willing to take over most of the space, which given the dwindling number of office tenants willing to invest and expand in the city, which has one of the largest land is no small matter highest office vacancy rate in the country, data from CoStar shows.

In Chicago, Uber began marketing more than 50,000 square feet of office space, the latest move the company has made in the city’s old Post Office building. The company became the largest tenant in the Loop business district building when it leased 463,000 square feet for the headquarters of its Uber Freight unit in 2019.

Since then, Uber has lost about 100,000 square meters of its original space. This number is likely to increase as soon as the company finds a sub-tenant who is willing to take over the new space.

In addition to several leased properties across San Francisco, in the months leading up to the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020, Uber made nearly 800,000 square feet of space available for subleases at its former headquarters and subsidiary offices as part of its preparations for moving to its new headquarters location from Mission Bay.

Newcomers to San Francisco who are looking for signs of a futuristic tech metropolis tend to come away disappointed. Yes, there is a robot barista making coffee in the airport, but other evidence is harder to come by. The city’s apathy towards its own tech sector is exemplified by low regard for ride-hailing apps. Not that that’s likely to stop a new service from trying its luck.

Alto is hoping to stand out from rivals Uber and Lyft by making its drivers employees – with all the attendant benefits – and sending them out in a standard model of car, a mid-sized Buick SUV. That may win over riders and drivers. But the company should not expect a warm welcome from the city.

Uber and Lyft were both founded in San Francisco. Neither are made to feel wanted. San Francisco airport may have been one of the first in the US to embrace ride-sharing services but it appears to have regretted the decision. If you arrive on a domestic flight and want to catch an Uber, you are left to hunt for non-existent signs, bump your suitcase along a concrete pass and down a flight of stairs and head out to a distant car park.

This is intentional. San Francisco’s troubled history with its taxi drivers matches New York’s. In 2010, shortly after Uber was launched, the city introduced a new auction for medallions, the licenses that give drivers the right to operate taxis. The price was a straightforward but stratospheric $250,000. In the past, these were available for a nominal fee but there was a long waiting list. Medallion holders would hang on to them for decades – sometimes renting them out to other drivers as a form of passive income.

San Francisco’s decision to create a market for medallions made the city a lot of money – $63mn, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), the city agency with regulatory authority over the taxi industry. Medallion sellers made millions too.

But within a couple of years of sales, rideshare companies had swamped the city, offering cheaper rides via convenient apps. Taxi revenues collapsed. The market for second-hand medallions was non-existent. Taxi drivers who had taken out huge loans were left with unaffordable debt. Many defaulted. Drivers want the city to buy back the medallions at the prices paid – the most recent organized protest was held earlier this month. But this is unlikely to happen. New York cab drivers are fighting the same fight, battling vast loans taken out to buy medallions before ride-hailing companies changed the market.

There is no satisfactory way to apportion blame. In San Francisco, a credit union that backed many of the loans sued the SFMTA for not protecting medallion value. Last year it lost its case. The SFMTA does not have jurisdiction over ride-hailing companies. They are regulated at state level, not city.

San Francisco’s response is to give taxi drivers who paid a vast price for priority medallions over other taxis at the airport. This is intended to help with the huge financial burden, although it is small compensation. They are permitted to drive along Market Street, one of San Francisco’s main streets, which is closed to private vehicles. As of 2020, the city has imposed a 3.25 per cent surcharge on ride-share journeys but not on taxis.

Passengers unaware of the backstory will not stop calling Ubers. Some may think twice after they have been forced to take an inconvenient route, but not many. The strange thing is that both taxi drivers and Uber have lost out financially. Ride-hailing companies are still trying to figure out how to make sustainable profits and keep users booking rides. Uber has only just begun to report positive net income. Its latest battle is working out how to offset rising oil prices. An oil levy for passengers to cover the price rise will help drivers but could put off riders.

The downsides to ride-hailing companies are common knowledge by now. They do not reduce car use—they increase it. Congestion has grown worse, making cities noisier, more polluted places, where journeys take longer. Research by Carnegie Mellon University shows that Ubers and Lyfts produce 20 per cent more greenhouse gas emissions than personal vehicles because they spend so much time driving around to collect passengers. Alto may well carve out a niche in the Bay Area. But the future of city transport is still up for grabs.

Newly released video footage appears to show California police officers severely beating an Uber driver with a law enforcement dog who was behind with payments for the car he rented for his work.

San Ramon police stopped Ali Badr, a 42-year-old Egyptian immigrant, in December 2020 after a car rental company reported his vehicle was stolen. Footage from the San Francisco Chronicle shows how the police in the Bay Area City release the dog without warning within seconds of stopping the unarmed and barefoot driver, although Badr did not fight back.

The dog clung to Badr’s right arm for almost a minute, tearing it so badly that it required several surgeries. In a lawsuit filed last month, Badr, who was never charged, said he was left with “severe physical and psychological injuries” and had not made full use of his arm and hand since the incident.

Ahmad Fawad Yusufi, a refugee from Afghanistan and father of three, was shot dead in a botched robbery attempt in San Francisco last month. His family says Yusufi, a former U.S. Army interpreter who lived in Sacramento, was in San Francisco driving for Uber, a job that was their only source of income.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A woman was arrested Thursday on suspicion of spraying pepper spray on an Uber driver in San Francisco who was coughed and insulted after asking a passenger to wear a mask, reported the police.

Malaysia King, 24, was arrested in Las Vegas on suspicion of a corrosive chemical attack, attack, battery and other charges. She was being held without bail. It wasn’t immediately clear if she had a lawyer speaking on her behalf.

Arna Kimiai, 24, who was also wanted in connection with Saturday’s attack, said through a lawyer that she intends to report soon, a statement from the San Francisco Police Department said.

“The videotaped conduct in this incident demonstrated a persistent disregard for the safety and wellbeing of a key service worker amid a deadly pandemic,” said Lt. Police Department chief of robbery detail, Tracy McCray, in the statement.

Uber driver Subhakar Khadkas was attacked in the Bayview neighborhood after apprehending three women. When he noticed that a woman was not masked, Khadkas stopped the drive and told passengers that, according to police, he could not continue.

A video then shows the women in the back seat berating Khadka and using swear words while the car is stopped on the shoulder of a highway. At some point the woman without a mask coughs at him, takes his cell phone out of the middle dashboard and rips off his face mask.

Khadka told KPIX-TV on Tuesday that another of the women sprayed him through the passenger window after the women got out of the car.

Khadka says he has to get out of his car because it is difficult to breathe.

“I never said anything bad to them, I never swore, I wasn’t brought up that way,” said Khadka.

Khadka said he believed he was attacked for being a South Asian immigrant. He came to the US eight years ago and works hard to support his family in Nepal.

Uber said in a statement Thursday that it banned all three drivers. “Uber does not tolerate racism or hatred in any form against any community,” the statement said.
