November 5, 2021

Until the Vehicle Triage Center opens in January 2022, a temporary lot will serve people currently living in vehicles, some of which have been hit by recent storms and rains

San Francisco, California – Mayor of London N. Breed and the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) today announced a new temporary parking space for vehicles to serve as an interim location pending the opening of the new Vehicle Triage Center (VTC) at Candlestick Point in January 2022 A storm and heavy rainfall in San Francisco affected a number of residents in vehicles on the Hunters Point Expressway, as well as a number of abandoned vehicles. The new location, located at 1236 Carroll Avenue and owned by Prologis, will temporarily serve these people and their vehicles until the VTC opens. At this point you have the option to move into the Candlestick VTC.

The Healthy Streets Operations Center (HSOC) coordinates the services that are offered to the affected residents. Outreach and street medicine teams conduct daily safety and wellness checks on affected residents, and Mother Browns provides them with daily meals.

Environmental doctors also monitor the conditions on site.

“The Vehicle Triage Center at Candlestick Point will provide a level of service and safety needed for the people who live in their vehicles in the area, but the recent damage caused by the storm requires us In the meantime, act while this site is up and running Our focus is on providing a safe place for those affected by the storms until we can get them into a more stable situation at the Vehicle Triage Center, “said Mayor Breed. “I would like to thank Prologis for their willingness to temporarily make this page available while we work to support those affected and the surrounding community.”

On the site made available by Prologis, people and their vehicles as well as other damaged and abandoned vehicles will be accommodated for around two months until the opening of the VTC. The city will be responsible for operations on what is currently the future home of a new training facility for the San Francisco Fire Department.

“As you know, we have worked hard to meet the needs of the community and the people who are forced to live in vehicles. We will soon be opening a Vehicle Triage Center (VTC) with infrastructure and support to take care of everyone’s life The recent storms “created a dangerous and unsafe situation for all and prompted us to find quick temporary help for neighbors and people living in vehicles. This temporary location will cater to everyone’s needs as we prepare to open the VTC, “said Chairman of the Board of Directors, Shamann Walton, who represents District 10 and the affected area.

“As a member of the San Francisco Community, we are excited to help city guides address the needs of the homeless,” said Steven Hussain, Prologis vice president of Workforce Programs and Community Relations.

Once opened, the Candlestick VTC will include up to 150 parking spaces for up to 177 people, 24/7 staff and security, bathrooms, mobile showers and drinking water. It will provide people who live in their vehicles in the immediate vicinity with a safe place to park and live, as well as access to services designed to stabilize their lives through health care, housing, employment, or other measures that suit their particular needs .

About Prologis

Where should those whose only home are on wheels be accommodated? There are growing concerns among some residents of the Bayview-Candlestick Point neighborhood.

Local residents said their community has been overrun with recreational vehicles and people who live in cars – and now the city wants to make them permanent.

A number of RVs and cars used as homes can be seen throughout the Hunters Point Expressway.

“These unhappy brothers and sisters currently facing economic disaster is a problem for the city and county of San Francisco,” said Anthony Alan Simon, a San Francisco resident. “It’s not a Bayview problem.”

During the pandemic, people lost their jobs and the number of uninhabited populations skyrocketed. But neighbors said the problems increase as more RVs move in.

A local resident reports a pile of medical waste and needles that he has to walk through in the neighborhood.

Local residents said there were real concerns about conditions with generators running all night, propane tanks, landfills and trash. Now, neighbors are concerned about a proposal for a vehicle triage center or secure parking lot with 150 spaces at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area in a challenging community.

“Until we have rebuilt Candlestick and the issues listed above are not resolved, we will not be able to organize or organize a vehicle triage center in the Bayview ward,” said Cynthia Bell of San Francisco.

San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Shamman Walton, who represents District 10, said the proposal addresses the reality of the situation with so many people living in vehicles.

“We’re not going to move people in the middle of a pandemic and send them back onto the streets. What we’re suggesting is a vehicle triage site, ”said Walton.

Walton added that the site would have restrooms and plumbing, 24/7 security, and janitorial services. The proposed triage site would also work with organizations that connect people to homes, according to Walton.

The goal? “Do what we can to get people back on track where they don’t have to live in vehicles,” said Walton.
