LIVEMORE — A woman was stranded on top of her car in a swift-moving Livermore creek for about 15 hours before being rescued Tuesday morning, the Alameda County Fire Department said.

Just after 10 a.m. Tuesday, a camper near the 7000 block of Del Valle Road called the Alameda County Fire Department about a car submerged in the water.

Fire crews at the scene spotted a woman sitting on top of the car and began planning a rescue, while calling the CHP for help. Thanks to appropriate weather, a CHP helicopter was able to lower a rescue technician and get the woman out of the creek.

“It could have had a whole different outcome. She could have been swept downstream, but she was strong enough to get up on top of the vehicle,” said Battalion Chief Kent Carlin, with Alameda Fire. “Maybe out of her tenacity or luck. I don’t know what it was. The entire cab was submerged, so she was able to swim out of the window and climb herself up on the vehicle.”

Video posted on the CHP Golden Gate Division Air Operations account showed the dramatic rescue.

**Water Rescue–Lake Del Valle**

This morning, CHP H-30 responded with Alameda County Fire, Pleasanton-Livermore Fire, East Bay Regional Parks, San Ramon Fire Department Helicopter Rescue Technician (HRT) and Falck Ambulance to a report of an overturned vehicle at Lake Del Valle. It was further reported that the occupant was sitting on top of the vehicle in the middle of a flowing creek.

As firefighters set up for a rescue with rescue swimmers, H-30 arrived overhead and lowered a San Ramon Valley Fire Department Helicopter Rescue Technician (HRT) to the vehicle. The San Ramon Valley Fire HRT placed the victim in a rescue harness for rescue. H-30 was able to hoist the HRT member and victim from the car to waiting firefighters.

The victim was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. It appears the victim attempted to drive across a creek that was moving fairly swiftly due to recent rains causing her vehicle to overturn in the creek.

Posted by CHP – Golden Gate Division Air Operations on Tuesday, January 23, 2024

According to Alameda Fire, the woman tried to drive through the creek around 7:30 p.m. Monday, but she underestimated how deep it was and was running faster than expected causing her car to overturn.

She was stranded for about 15 hours. Rescue crews said she would be OK, but she was still taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

Kelsi Thorud contributed to this report.

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A utility worker died after he was trapped in a collapsed trench and buried under dirt and concrete in San Francisco, the San Francisco Fire Department said. The victim was working on a sewer line when 8-10 feet of debris fell on top of him.

The fatal incident happened at a worksite in the Lower Haight neighborhood on the corner of Divisadero and Oak streets. The victim had been working below ground on a sewer project for the city’s public utilities commission, Rachel Gorden of San Francisco Public Works told KRON4.

“They were below ground in an open trench doing sewer upgrade work,” Gorden said.

Fire crews immediately launched an effort to dig down and rescue him around 10:30 a.m. with 50 rescuers on scene. The worker was trapped in the trench for two hours before his lifeless body was found, the SFFD said.

Video from SFFD showed fire crews near a hole in the ground with ropes nearby and rescuers digging dirt. Fire officials said specialized tools such as tripods, shoring equipment and a vacuum truck were utilized.

Fire Captain Jonathan Baxter said, “After being evaluated by our paramedics and our department physician … unforcedly this individual did not survive the injuries associated to this.”

According to the San Francisco PUC, the victim was a private contractor working on a city sewer line. It’s unclear why the trench suddenly collapsed. There are multiple agencies investigating this death, including Cal OSHA.

Gorden said, “We are inspecting to see what they were doing at the time of this trench collapse.” Gorden said safety is the number one priority for any construction site.

As of Thursday afternoon, the victim’s identity had not yet been released by officials.

Dozens of residents gathered near the scene were sad to hear the news. Resident Rebecca Gallegos said the victim was “just providing for his family, and went to work, and this person is not coming home today.”

(Photo: SFFD)

Authorities are asking people to avoid the area and to take alternate routes.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

A man who climbed down near San Francisco’s legendary Cliff House was trapped on a cliff ledge early Monday morning, necessitating a rescue by fire officials.

At around 7:40 am, the San Francisco Fire Department embarked on a cliff rescue after an adult man scaled down rocks near the restaurant and ended up on the ledge near a wall covered in graffiti.

“The male was curious and climbed rocks placing himself in a need for being rescued,” San Francisco Fire spokesperson Lt. Jonathan Baxter told SFGATE in an emailed statement Monday afternoon.

Videos posted on Twitter within the hour show a member of the fire crew affixing rescue rope onto the man and scaling the wall together. The rescue was completed just after 8 am

UPDATE: 1 ADULT MALE RESCUED BY #YOURSFFD AND PER #SFFDEMS WILL BE OKAY– INCIDENT CLOSED https://t.co/TzrFEDaESC pic.twitter.com/o8QjCZGTAg

The man was “safely rescued and unharmed,” said Baxter.

“This is why we ask that you always stay on designated paths or trails,” Baxter added.

Last year, the National Park Service confirmed the fate of the historic San Francisco fixture: A new restaurant will be installed by the end of 2022; a decision will be made as to who the lessee will be in the coming months.

Baxter did not identify the victim, stating that “he is considered a victim.”

From CBS San Francisco employees: SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A San Francisco burglar suspect died after escaping on the rooftops and somehow trapped between two buildings, police said Thursday. San Francisco police said officers responded to a report of a break-in at a residential building on a 2,600 block on Hyde St. in Russian …
