A beloved California aunt who helped send several of her nieces and nephews to college died Monday after a crazed homeless man pushed her onto a moving train, police reports said.

The 74-year-old woman was on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) platform at San Francisco's Powell Street Station when suspect Trevor Belmont allegedly pushed her into an oncoming train shortly after 11 p.m., BART police said.

The victim, identified by the coroner as Corazon Dandan, hit his head on the train and fell to the platform.

Corazon Dandan, 74, was killed Monday night when a homeless man allegedly pushed her onto a moving BART train. Family photo

She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where she later died, traffic police said.

Dandan, of San Mateo County, was on her way home from her job as a telephone operator at the Parc 55 hotel when she was killed, her nephew told the San Francisco Standard.

Alvin Dandan, a St. Louis doctor, said his aunt took the BART to work and back home every day and revealed his cousins recently warned her against using the BART late at night.

Corazon, who was divorced and never had children, continued to work well past the usual retirement age even though she did not need the income, he said.

“She just loved working and being around younger people,” Alvin told the local news publication.

She also loved her many nieces and nephews, he added, and helped finance his medical studies and the education of several of his cousins.

Shortly after the fatal shove, BART police arrested 49-year-old Trevor Belmont, also known as Hoak Taing, at the Powell Street Station. Hearst Newspapers via Getty Images

“Great doesn't even describe how I feel about this woman,” Alvin DanDan told The Standard on Tuesday. “I wouldn't be here and a lot of my cousins wouldn't be here. … She put a lot of people through school.”

Dandan landed in San Francisco from the Philippines in the 1980s “as a single, independent woman,” he added.

Alvin said he spoke to his aunt via text message the day she was murdered.

“She sounded cheerful,” he said.

Dandan's nephew, a doctor in St. Louis, said his aunt helped him finance his medical studies. AP

BART officers arrested the 49-year-old Belmont man shortly after the fatal shoving at the station. Police said the suspect, also known as Hoak Taing, was a “transient.”

Belmont was booked into the San Francisco County Jail on Tuesday morning. He remains behind bars on charges of murder and assault on an elderly person likely to cause serious injury.

Investigators have not yet determined a motive for this shocking crime and are continuing to interview witnesses and review surveillance videos.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Pittsburgh Steelers completed what many see as the ideal offseason from a personnel standpoint at the end of the preseason, signing DB Desmond King II after he was released by the Houston Texans. King was the proven veteran presence Pittsburgh needed to add at nickel corner to solidify its secondary, adding an experienced defender with inside/outside versatility to its secondary.

Still, King was officially signed on Aug. 30, giving him just over a week to prepare and get the playbook down in-time for Pittsburgh’s Week One contest against the San Francisco 49ers. DC Teryl Austin was asked if King has been able to “hop on the moving train”, as Mike Tomlin would say, getting up to speed fast enough to play in Pittsburgh’s home opener against San Francisco. Austin wouldn’t commit to King playing a lot this week but mentioned that he’s doing everything he can to contribute this weekend.

“He’s getting himself ready” Austin told the media Thursday, per official team transcript. “If he’s going to be ready this week, I can’t say for sure. But he has jumped on a moving train. You can see he’s a good pro. He understands NFL ball. He’s played a lot of football. He’s getting himself up to speed as fast as he can.”

Josh Carney of Steelers Depot detailed what Pittsburgh was getting in King shortly after he signed in a film room breakdown of the defensive back, commending his motor and ability to play all facets of the game against the run as well as in coverage. Still, picking up all the coverage looks, schemes, and checks can be difficult for even a veteran like King, who has been in the league for awhile, let alone get it all down in less than ten days’ time.

It may be a tad optimistic to expect King to play all the snaps at nickel corner right away as he tries to get a firm grasp of everything the Steelers are asking him to do in their system. It would make more sense to ease King in, allowing him to play in packages where he is comfortable and continue to use DBs Chandon Sullivan and Elijah Riley, who battled for Pittsburgh’s starting nickel job during training camp.

The Steelers are carrying seven cornerbacks on their active roster, suggesting that a cut may be coming once King is fully up to speed. Riley can play both as a safety and nickel corner, which may deflate that case for having to part with a cornerback, but once King is fully up to speed and ready to rock as the team’s starting nickel, it will be interesting to see if Pittsburgh looks to make a move in its secondary.

A Turkish-born artist who moved to New York six years ago was immediately paralyzed from the neck down after a man allegedly pushed her into a moving subway in what a prosecutor on Wednesday described as a “completely unprovoked” attack.

Kamal Semrade, 39, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and other felonies in the alleged attack on a subway station on Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Sunday, according to a criminal complaint filed with the New York Criminal Court and obtained by NBC New York .

The 35-year-old victim suffered a fractured cervical spine, a head laceration and other injuries after Semrade “grabbed her head with both hands and shoved her into the moving subway car with all her might,” Assistant District Attorney Carolyn said McGuigan on Wednesday during Semrade’s indictment.

In a verified online fundraiser organized in part by her husband, the victim was identified as Emine Yilmaz Ozsoy.

Emine Yilmaz Ozsoy. (via GoFundMe)

She was immediately paralyzed and remains in critical condition with a high risk of death or stroke, McGuigan said.

The attack at Lexington Avenue and the East 63rd Street station occurred at 6:05 a.m. and was caught on security camera and seen by witnesses, McGuigan said.

Ozsoy, the former Istanbul newspaper headpage designer, moved to New York City in 2017 and wants to focus on her art, her husband said in a written statement released at the fundraiser. She was on her way to work at the time, he said.

She and Semrade were on the same train and got off in Manhattan, McGuigan said.

Semrade followed her – and then pushed her onto the train as it left the station “quickly,” McGuigan said.

“All I see is him walking beside her, on her left side, and with his palms open, he just bangs her head on the moving train,” witness Nancy Marrero told NBC New York.

Her body “wobbled in circles and she just fell on the platform,” Marrero told the broadcaster.

Semrade fled the station, McGuigan said. As Ozsoy lay on the subway platform, she said she couldn’t feel her arm and asked if she was dying, Marrero said, according to NBC New York.

The story goes on

“I thought, ‘You’re not going to die, don’t worry, I’m here,'” Marrero told the broadcaster. “I stay with you.”

Court records show that New York City police took Semrade into custody on Tuesday.

In the statement, Ozsoy’s husband Ferdi Ozsoy thanked the authorities and those who comforted his wife following the alleged assault. He said she underwent difficult surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center and he expects a “long road to recovery” that will likely hamper her career as an award-winning artist, painter and illustrator.

Describing himself as his wife’s only family in the United States, Ferdi Ozsoy said he was applying for emergency visas for relatives who could help with their care.

“Your life after will require constant care,” he said.

A lawyer for Semrade, who was remanded in custody during Wednesday’s hearing, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday night. His next court date is scheduled for Friday.

The last time an overnight train connected Los Angeles and San Francisco was 55 years ago.

A Newport Beach startup wants to turn back the clock with its version of a “hotel train.”

The luxury overnight train could soon offer a new way to travel between San Francisco and LA if Dreamstar Lines Inc. gets its plans approved by California railroads.

The idea for the privately operated overnight train would work almost like a red-eye for the railroad, but with comfortable accommodations so people could get a full night’s sleep before waking up at their destination, said Jake Vollebregt, Dreamstar’s CEO. If the small company’s plan goes ahead, the new trains could be running by the summer of 2024, he said.

“I think it would be a renewal of the track,” said Vollebregt. “For those travelers who are fed up with security checks and waiting and delays [on airlines]we will address them.”

Dreamstar hopes to capture just a small portion of the huge market for travel between two of California’s largest cities.

Travel between LA and San Francisco has become one of the busiest air routes in the country, according to the latest statistics from OAG Aviation. More than 250,000 aircraft seats fly between the two cities monthly, OAG data shows; Dreamstar plans to provide private rooms for about 65 people per trip – far fewer than a commercial flight.

Vollebregt said Dreamstar’s service was “more like a private jet company than a major airline” and focused on the specialized niche of “upscale overnight hotel train service.” The night trains would run in both directions, departing around 10 p.m. and arriving around 8 a.m. the next day, Vollebregt said.

The five or six sleeper cars would offer three types of private rooms: singles, executive class doubles or first class cabins — the latter two with ensuite bathrooms — and a car for drinks, desserts and continental breakfast, he said. The trains would have multiple stops in both LA and San Francisco, startup officials said, and a stop and crew change point in San Luis Obispo.

One-way tickets cost about $300, $600, and $1,000 depending on room type, which Vollebregt says is higher than the typical airfare but below other North American sleeper trains.

A night passenger train — Southern Pacific’s LARK — ran between the two influential California cities for about two decades beginning in the 1940s, but service ended in 1968. Amtrak began operating a night train from Sacramento to LA in the 1980s, the held in Oakland. but it only lasted two years.

Amtrak currently offers a variety of cross-California long-distance daytime travel, but no direct service from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The Coast Starlight connects LA to Oakland and Emeryville, while the San Joaquin route runs from the same Bay Area stops to Bakersfield, but requires a separate bus trip to get to LA

“For day trips, travelers have limited options to arrive in both directions in the morning or fly the evening before,” said Vollebregt. “Why not a night train so travelers can sleep and wake up at their destination?”

He said the “gold standard” for the concept was based on Japan’s well-run rail system, which he described as “very fast and comfortable and very affordable.” He hopes his team can bring this concept to California and eventually expand to other metro areas.

But the next step, Vollebregt said, is to get the approval and support of necessary stakeholders and rail operators, including Union Pacific, which owns most of the shoreline the train plans to use, as well as Metrolink in Southern California and Caltrain closer to San Francisco.

Officials from both Union Pacific and Metrolink confirmed they are in talks with Dreamstar representatives, but neither have reached any type of agreement yet. It was not immediately clear if talks with Caltrain were initiated.

“The biggest challenge is getting support from the agencies and private companies that own the lines and terminals,” said Vollebregt. He hopes to begin services in the summer of 2024, but said, “It depends on how quickly our partners are ready to move.”

Scott Johnson, a Metrolink spokesman, said Dreamstar officials recently “put forward plans at a very high level for the proposed service.”

“More detail and analysis would be required to move the service forward,” Johnson said in a statement.

Vollebregt admits there are still many questions about the company, including scalability and sustainability as a company, as well as determining the physical infrastructure and logistics. But he said Dreamstar has spent years studying feasibility and is confident in its current plans.

“This is one of the largest travel markets in the country with more than 10 million air passengers annually and around 40 million travelers in total,” said Vollebregt. “A night train would be sustainable with a market share of less than a quarter of a percentage point, which would support ridership well beyond that.”

NEW YORK (WPIX) – Police officers and a good Samaritan in New York City rescued a man who suffered a possible medical issue and fell onto the city’s subway tracks on Thanksgiving, police said.

NYPD Officers Brunel Victor and Taufique Bokth were conducting a transit sweep at the station, located at East 116 Street and Lexington Avenue, when officers were told by other riders that a man had fallen onto the tracks. Police immediately left the station to re-enter through the northbound side in order to reach the man, officials said.

Bodycam video released by the NYPD shows the officers rushing down to the subway platform and finding the victim on the track, where another rider was already trying to assist. Together with the good Samaritan, police were able to lift the 40-year-old man back to the platform and out of harm’s way.

One of the officers, however, was still on the track after helping to lift the man — even as the uptown 6 train approached, the footage shows.

He is soon helped back up the platform, with just seconds to spare before the train comes into the station.

Suspect hijacks city bus in San Francisco, smashes into cars, video shows

While waiting for medical help, another responding officer was able to help the victim using his prior medical training. The man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

NYPD Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell tweeted a video of the rescue on Friday, describing the responding officers’ actions as heroic.

“For the officers who rescued a man from an oncoming train after he accidentally fell on the subway tracks yesterday in Manhattan — courage is second nature. Join me in saluting these great cops,” the commissioner wrote.

MTA Chairman Janno Lieber also issued a statement praising the officers and the good Samaritan as well as state and city officials.

“The joint commitment by [Gov. Kathy Hochul] other [Mayor Eric Adams] to have additional NYPD officers patrol in subway stations and on trains not only helps riders feel safer, but in this case, enabled brave officers and a good Samaritan — in the finest tradition of New Yorkers helping each other — to save a life,” Lieber said.

Tesla may be ramping up how it uses simulation to train its Autopilot system. A report by Electrek asserts that it has sources claiming that the company is concentrating on a reproduction of San Francisco. The article includes an image of the recreation and states that Tesla is working with Real Engine on its simulation.

According to Electrek, the image below is part of Tesla’s simulation of San Francisco.

Tesla gave the world a look at how it uses simulation to advance the Autopilot program during the first AI Day in August of 2021 (recap).

AI Day

At the first AI Day Tesla talked about the use of using simulations to help train Autopilot. The video below is cued up to where they discuss a simulation.

Ashok Elluswamy, the Director of the Autopilot Program, showed a video that, at first glance, looked real other than an appearance by a Cybertruck. “I may say so myself. It looks very pretty,” said Elluswamy. He explained that the company is investing heavily in using simulation. “It helps when data is difficult to source. As large as our fleet is (FSD Beta users), it can still be hard to get some crazy scenes,” the director explained while showing a rendering of two people and a dog running in the middle of a busy highway. “This is a rare scene, but it can happen, and Autopilot still needs to handle it when it happens,” said Elluswamy.

It appears that Tesla has jumped on Fortnite’s Battle Bus by teaming up with Epic Games and its development platform — Unreal Engine. Fortnite is one of the most popular games of all time, with 80 million subscribers and 4 million daily users, and it was created with Unreal Engine. Epic flexed its creative muscles when it gathered experts to create The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience. The goal was to “blur the boundaries between cinematic and game, inviting us to ask — what is real?” The project spotlight on Unreal Engine shows just how incredibly realistic a simulation can be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU0gvPcc3

After Elluswamy explained that the company is investing in simulation, it makes sense that Tesla would be hiring several positions with simulation in the job description. Electrek pointed out one posting for Autopilot Rendering Engineer. The posting states the successful candidate “will contribute to the development of Autopilot simulation by enabling and supporting the creation of photo-realistic 3D scenes that can accurately model the driving experience in a wide range of locales and conditions.” Tesla prefers the candidates to have experience working with Unreal Engine.

While not new, this does show that Tesla is doubling down on efforts to improve Autopilot. It has recently rolled out Full Self Driving to 60,000 more users, bringing the FSD Beta program to 160,000 in North America.

We can only guess how many thousands of simulations the Autopilot team is conducting to add to the data the Beta testers are collecting. It seems unlikely that Tesla has only created the City by the Bay in its simulations. Perhaps Elluswamy will show more renderings at the second AI Day on September 30th.

Shiny new Model 3s started appearing last month, missing the small, round polka dots on their bumpers. The circles were gone after the company announced it was removing the ultrasonic sensors (USS) to move to strictly Vision. However, after a few weeks in the wild, evidence suggests the company will mimic what USS used to perform and display.

Twitter user @EZebroni tweeted a helpful video demonstrating the difference between a Tesla with and without USS. It’s noticeably different then what Tesla drivers are used to seeing. The distance lines are gone, and even the images of what is beside the non-USS Tesla are not there, just a lot of white screen.

As seen in the video, a vehicle without USS will not display any information to the driver regarding nearby objects. The distance to nearby objects is not displayed on the screen nor are the colored arcs that usually display when an object is nearby.

However, update 2022.40.4 appears to reintroduce some functionality to owners of these vehicles, at least in shadow mode.

Twitter user @greentheonly, a well-known Tesla hacker, tweeted: 2022.40.4 merges no-ultrasonics code into “mainline,” now receives parking distances from Autopilot (where not equipped with proper ultrasonics).

From Green’s findings, it looks like Tesla is preparing to mimic ultrasonic sensors with Tesla Vision, which essentially means that the vehicle is likely to display not only the arcs when an object is nearby, but also the distance to the given object.

Greentheonly was asked several questions after tweeting this information. Someone wanted to know if the Tesla no-ultrasonics code was working in shadow mode, a blend or pure AutoPilot. Green said that it is not a blend, but he needed to figure out what is displayed on USS-less cars, encourage someone with a new Model 3 or Model Y to try 2022.40.4.

Although the code is available in 2022.40.4, it’s not clear yet whether Tesla is running this code in shadow mode, meaning that the code is run in the background without notifying the user, or if distances are now being shown on vehicles without USS. Video

Will Tesla stop utilizing ultrasonic sensors like they did radar?

Another Twitter user asked if this would make the USS on the existing vehicles “ornaments?” This has been a widespread concern since the non-USS cars started showing up. Tesla addressed this matter when it announced it was removing USS. It states on the company website: At this time, we do not plan to remove the functionality of ultrasonic sensors in our existing fleet.

At this time USS have only been removed from the Model 3 and Model Y, but they will also be removed from the Model S and Model X in 2023. Green also believes the existing USS will remain operational, tweeting: not any time soon, I imagine. Also, the front ones still cover an area where the cameras don’t see.

Another user questioned, does it only take information from the moving/static object networks, or is it able to use the occupancy, and road edge networks as well? To which Green responded that he had not looked into that kind of detail yet.

The new world of non-USS is upon us, and there will be many questions. This revelation is likely the first of a long line of updates to assist vision in making up what was lost with ultrasonic sensors.

Since the Cybertruck unveiling in 2019, Tesla has pushed production dates back numerous times: from late 2021 to late 2022, to early 2023, and most recently to the mid-2023 target for initial low-volume production.

Tesla is reportedly planning to begin Cybertruck high-volume production at the end of next year. The company is preparing to set production dates according to a report from Reuters, indicating mass manufacturing of the Cybertruck to begin at the end of 2023.

It still seems that Tesla is on track to start low-volume production in mid-2023, with mass production beginning at the end of the year.

During the Q3 2022 earnings call, Tesla stated that it was working on preparing the Austin, Texas plan to build the Cybertruck, with “early production” set to begin mid-2023. During the call, Elon Musk said that Tesla is “in the final lap for Cybertruck.” The Q3 2022 Shareholder Deck also listed Cybertruck’s production status as in the “tooling” phase which means it’s preparing for production.

This aligns with timelines from IDRA Group, the die-casting company making the 9,000-ton Giga Press that will be used for the Cybertruck. The Giga Press has reportedly arrived in Houston, Texas and can be expected to reach the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas soon.

Reuters points out that gradually ramping up Cybertruck production starting mid-2023, reaching high volume production by late 2023 would mean that some of the roughly 1 million reservation holders may have to wait more than a year before their truck is delivered.

Elon stated that the company had more orders “than we could possibly fulfill for three years after the start of production.” For these reasons, Tesla stopped taking orders for the Cybertruck outside North America in May 2022.
