When San Francisco–based AD100 designer Charles de Lisle first met his would-be client, tech CEO Yishai Lerner, he thought he was signing on to decorate a Silicon Valley bachelor pad. Yishai had just landed his dream home, a quaint two-story fixer-upper on the crest of a hill in central San Francisco with impressive 180-degree views across the bay. And as the son of three architects—his mother, father, and stepmother are all in the profession—it had always been the dream to create his very own space from scratch.

Things, however, quickly changed. Shortly after commissioning de Lisle, Yishai met his now wife, Sabrina, and it wasn’t long before the two were married. Naturally, the scope of the project shifted. In fact, from the time they began planning the interiors in 2016 to when the paint was dry in 2022, his clients had multiplied from one to four when the couple’s two young sons arrived in fast succession.

Before de Lisle was brought on board, the home was largely a monochromatic shell. Yishai had worked closely with Ross Levy of Levy Art + Architecture to bring the house to life and, in doing so, had rendered a decidedly minimal aesthetic. They built out an extension in the back, adding extra square footage while simultaneously allowing the architect and client to engineer the home’s smallest details—for instance, installing invisible air conditioning vents in the seam of the living room’s gabled ceiling, or custom-designing the winding iron staircase so it appears to be floating independently of the walls. “I’ve built software my whole life,” Yishai explains. “So I’m always thinking about the user experience.”

De Lisle welcomed the family-friendly pivot. “I wanted to take his very masculine, slick sensibility,” he explains, “and add layers to it that felt very Northern California—a bit hippie and handmade but in a way that fit the space.” But de Lisle credits Sabrina with adding a real sense of vibrancy. “She took one look at the house and was like, ‘I don’t want to live in a bachelor pad,’” he jokes. “She has the most amazing wardrobe and loves color. She wanted the space to be really happy and bright.”

Together the Lerners and de Lisle pulled together references that ranged from midcentury Italian interiors to cozy Scandinavian homes: ideas easily legible in details like a custom console in the entranceway, creamy Nordic-inspired Douglas Fir wall paneling in the TV room, and Ceppo de Gre Stone in the guest suite (the very same that clads the gray facades of Milanese apartment buildings).

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area was created by Congress in 1972, placing Alcatraz Island under the control of the National Park Service. Today, it is a popular tourist spot, with more than 1 million people visiting the island every year, according to the ​​Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

Alon Nechushtan’s latest project, Moving Voices, is coming to the U.S. through the month of November! The New York based jazz pianist will be joined by his international quartet, comprised of François and Louis Moutin, two brothers from France, and Lisbon-born vocalist Sara Serpa.

Moving Voices, which consists of original compositions from Nechushtan, is aimed to amplify immigrant voices and other inspirational stories centered around ordinary people who make extraordinary voyages, moving to and from new homes. Juxtapositions between perspectives present the promise of hope and idealization of journeys to the US with the terror-inspiring survival stories of the French migrant camp known as “the Jungle” to serve as the impetus in this movingly ambitious project.

The compositions utilize excerpts from Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz, African poet Lenrie Peters, Italian Jewish Primo Levi’s emotional poem ‘Voices’, and Ethiopian-born writer Alemayehu Gebrehiwot, to tell stories about emigrating, migrating, immigrating, seeking asylum, shelter, political refuge and a bit of love and compassion. About the Artists

François Moutin was born in Paris. At age 5, François began studying guitar, then piano by age 11. The acoustic bass became his most lasting passion as a teenager. Also studying mathematics and physics, François received a college degree in engineering and earned a doctorate in physics at the age of 24. Then he elected to become a professional musician.

Three years later, as a member of the legendary Martial Solal’s Trio, François was recognized as one of the finest young bass players in Europe. At 29, he began co-leading the Quintet Moutin with his twin brother Louis, a top echelon Jazz drummer. This project has evolved into the Moutin Reunion Quartet.

With this band, the brothers have toured extensively around Europe and the United States, working with the greatest musicians of this age: Martial Solal, Michel Portal, Antoine Herve, Daniel Humair, André Ceccarelli, Eric Lelann, Jean-Michel Pilc, Christian Escoude.

Born in Paris on Christmas Eve 1961, Louis Moutin developed an early passion for music, particularly jazz, in which he became immersed thanks to the family’s record collection. When he was seven years old, Louis began teaching himself to play piano. At age 20, he chose to become a jazz drummer.

At 24, after completing training as an engineer at the prestigious Ecole Centrale de Lyon and receiving a Masters Degree in Mathematics, Louis decided to abandon a career in technology and to pursue his musical interests. Within three years, he was a member of the very successful Machado Trio, and was already regarded as one of the best European Jazz drummers, performing frequently in the international Jazz Festival network.

At 29, Louis teamed with his twin brother François, a highly regarded upright bass player, to form their first group. This collaboration by the Moutin brothers drew praise from Jazz audiences and music professionals alike. In 1998, the Moutin brothers have created the Moutin Reunion Quartet. This quartet has released 5 albums and performed more than 450 concerts. Described by the New York Times as “a singer of silvery poise and cosmopolitan outlook,” and by the JazzTimes magazine as “a master of wordless landscapes,” Serpa started her recording and performing career with jazz luminaries such as Grammy-nominated pianist, Danilo Perez, Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow pianist, Ran Blake, and Greg Osby.

Serpa was voted 2020 NPR Jazz Vocalist, Rising Star-Female Vocalist 2019 by the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll, and teaches at The New School and New Jersey City University. Currently Serpa is Artist-In-Residence at Park Avenue Armory, in New York and a recipient of New York City Women’s Fund 2020, Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant 2019, New Music USA 2019 Grant, 2021 USArtists Grant from Mid-Atlantic Foundation for the Arts, and 2021 Herb Alpert/Ragdale Prize in Composition.

LAS VEGAS — Tom Kim now has something in common with Byron Nelson as the only players to have won the same PGA Tour event twice in the same season.

Kim successfully defended his title Sunday in the Shriners Children’s Open when he closed with a 5-under 66 to emerge from a pack of a dozen players who had a chance in the final hour. Kim wound up winning by one shot over Adam Hadwin, who birded the final hole for a 67.

Kim now has three PGA Tour titles in the last 15 months, at 21 the youngest player since Tiger Woods in 1997 to have three tour wins.

“I really felt confident in myself,” Kim said. “I knew that if I did me I was going to be able to do it. I’m stoked to get this one.”

He won in Las Vegas a year ago, beating Patrick Cantlay in a playoff at the TPC Summerlin, when the Shiners Children’s Open was early in the season. Now, the Las Vegas event is still part of the same season because the PGA Tour goes to a calendar season starting in 2024.

Nelson won the San Francisco Open in January 1944, and the same tournament in December of 1994, both times at Harding Park.

This one was up for grabs until Kim seized control on the par-5 16th.

With an hour left in the tournament, there was a six-way tie for the lead and 12 players were separated by a single shot. The key stretch at the TPC Summerlin was holes No. 13 through No. 16, which ranked as four of the five easiest holes in the final round.

Taylor Pendrith was tied for the lead with a birdie on the 13th, but had to settle for pars the rest of that stretch. K.H. Lee made all pars.

Then, it became a two-man race between Kim and Hadwin, playing in the final group with Kim holding a one-shot advantage.

Both birdied the 13th, Hadwin with a 35-foot birdie putt that rimmed all the way around the cup before dropping. Both birdied the reachable par-4 15th, Kim with a tough up-and-down and birdie putt from 12 feet, Hadwin narrowly missing a 25-foot eagle attempt.

It turned on the par-5 16th. Kim hit to the fat of the green in two, 50 feet away for eagle. Hadwin knew he missed his shot right after contact and it came up well short and into the water. Hadwin missed a 6-foot par putt after his penalty drop, and Kim three-putted — he had to make a 5-footer on his third one — for par.

“I completely whiffed it, up and out of it, and unfortunately one of my worst swings of the day at the least opportune time,” Hadwin said.

“I feel like you dump it in the water there on 16, and I certainly by no means gave the tournament, but I would have liked to have hit a more quality golf shot and put a little bit more pressure on Tom coming down the stretch.”

That gave Kim a two-shot lead with two to play, and he closed with solid pars. Kim finished at 20-under 264.

Eric Cole boosted his bid to be PGA Tour rookie of the year by closing with a 62 to finish two behind, along with Alex Noren (65), J.T. Poston (66) and Pendrith (67). Pendrith came into Las Vegas at No. 123 in the FedEx Cup and was projected to move to No. 90, all but assuring a full card for 2024.

Ludvig Aberg, who made his Ryder Cup debut two weeks ago, also shot 62 and tied for 13th.

Kim, born in South Korea and raised primarily in Australia, won for the first time in 2023. He had a hot run last summer that included victories in the Wyndham Championship and in Las Vegas, followed by a dynamic debut in the Presidents Cup.

But he said he felt the pressure to live up to the expectations, and it turned this year into a grind. He was a distant runner-up in the British Open, though he injured his ankle during the week that kept him from defending his title in the Wyndham Championship.

“It’s been a grind trying to figure it out,” Kim said. “My first full season, trying to live up to expectations of a great year. It’s been humbling sometimes.”

The victory moves Kim to No. 11 in the world ranking.

Isaiah Salinda, who got into Las Vegas as a Monday qualifier, had a 63-67 weekend and tied for seventh, which gets him into the next full PGA Tour event Nov. 2-5 in Mexico.

The Four Seasons Napa Valley Drive experience gives discerning clientele entry to some of the most exclusive vineyards and culinary farms, many of which either book up months in advance or simply don’t open their doors to the public. Expect a crash course in sportscars and choose from a fleet of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, and Bentleys courtesy of Italian racing and touring company Canossa. In true California car-culture style, those on the tour get to experience the joys of driving through canyons and the bluffs of the historic Pacific Coast Highway, though experienced guides and designated drivers are also on hand. 

Wine tours of Napa are nothing new, but what sets the Drive experience apart is the sheer caliber of each stop. Ordinarily, some featured wineries and farms maintain a cloistered approach: opening the property to visits from friends and business partners but politely declining the charter-bused, bride-tribe bachelorette crowd looking to get smashed on flights of pinot grigio.

Each destination on the seven-day itinerary will be open only to Drive participants. Highlights include Opus One, an estate winery in Napa Valley founded by renowned Bordeaux wine grower Baron Philippe de Rothschild and vintner Robert Mondavi, who established the winery on the best of Old and New-World winemaking practices. As the brainchild of two of the 20th century’s most renowned winemakers, Opus One takes agriculture and winemaking seriously and offers limited opportunities for small groups to visit the property. Even the building, overseen by local firm Leong Architecture, was designed to shield much of the 200-acre property’s operations from public view.

Napa and its truly excellent wineries shine, but so does the region’s rich culinary tradition. Ever since Alice Waters entered the words “farm to table” into the lexicon of chefs and restaurant-goers with Chez Panisse, Northern California has played a pivotal role in the evolution of hyperlocal cuisine. One of the most prodigious torch-bearers, SingleThread, opened in 2016 with a five-acre culinary garden. Since then, the restaurant has accrued three Michelin stars and 24 acres of farmland in the Dry Creek Valley. Overseen by head farmer Katina Connaughton, who founded the business with her husband Kyle Connaughton, the farm is just four miles away from the restaurant and supplies it with produce, honey, olive oil, and flowers.

Usually, the farm opens by invitation to those who purchase produce from its CSA (community-supported agriculture) program, or ticketholders of its pre-scheduled workshops, but those partaking in the Drive itinerary will be treated to a private field walk and harvest tasting led by Katina and Adam Smith, the Director of Farm Programming. “The first course is a snapshot of what’s happening at the farm at that moment,” Katina said during Surface’s visit, and further explained that seasonality can change the restaurant’s courses in as little as a week. Guests can look forward to stretching their legs on a tour of the farm, and partaking in seasonal refreshments like strawberry-leaf tea and scones, and picking up a souvenir or two at the farm shop. 

The valley’s farmland and vineyards are undoubtedly charming, but a farm experience of another sort takes Drivers west, to the cliffside vistas of the Jenner Headlands’ sea birds and crashing waves. The experience is best enjoyed from a top-down convertible Bentley GTC S, barreling down the Pacific Coast Highway with sport mode activated. This leg of the trip heads west to Hog Island, a legendary Bay Area oyster farm and outdoor cafe on a 185-acre expanse of Tomales Bay. Scoring a parking space—let alone a spot and a meal at the weathered picnic tables overlooking the bay—can be cutthroat. Their specialty oysters may have playful names, like the French Hog and Earthquake Bay, so-named for the San Andreas fault that lies directly below Tomales Bay, but the crew helmed by founding partners John Finger and Terry Sawyer take their work seriously. A private Hog Island farm tour grants exclusive access to a crash course in all things oyster: from farming and shucking to the mollusk’s evolutionary history and ability to singularly restore polluted waterways. Afterward, enjoy an outdoor lunch at the farm’s Boat Oyster Bar, where the BBQ oysters are dished up with chipotle bourbon butter and paired with wines from the local Sonoma, Napa, and Russian River valleys.

The Drive experience is packed with memorable stops, and perhaps most remarkable is the private vineyard, Adamvs. A mountain road particularly well-suited to the nimble maneuvers of a Ferrari Spider winds through a canopy of redwoods to the vineyard’s private grounds on Howell Mountain. The winery rarely offers tastings and tours, and even then approved requests from buyers—sometimes called allocators in direct-ship wine lingo. The property features a wine library painstakingly replicated in concrete from an abandoned wood structure that charmed vintner-owners Denise and Stephen Adams when they purchased the property in 2008. The couple and business partners tapped San Francisco architect Kurt Melander to replicate the structure and create a new tasting room to honor the site’s history as a former hunting lodge and farm. The result is a glass-enclosed tasting room inspired by a barn that once sat in its place. A glass-enclosed “ghost structure” is hidden behind the property’s own felled trees, which appear to be suspended in midair by magic. From there, enjoy the vineyard’s Cabernet Sauvignon and learn about the property’s tastings and lessons in beekeeping and olive farming. 

Every day on the itinerary is filled with stops worth raving about, so spare yourself the charter buses full of whoo-girls and prepare to embark on a tour that goes beyond the tourist traps for an unforgettable experience. SAN FRANCISCO — British duo Jungle took their signature nu-disco electronic funk to new new electrifying heights at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on Saturday.

The tour was in support of Tom McFarland’s and Joshua Lloyd-Watson’s most danceable album yet, Volcano. This album explores themes of transformation and the raw power of nature. These themes came vividly to life through the fiery visuals that accompanied the performance.

The show began with subtle rumbles as if the sound were coming from beneath the earth’s surface. The crowd erupted in cheers when the duo finally appeared. Crimson light bathed the stage as Jungle opened with the anthemic “Us Against the World.” Fog shrouded the performers in a hazy glow and their silhouettes swayed against a red backdrop. They quickly transitioned to the next song, “The Heat,” from their 2014 self-titled album.

Backed by a guitarist and two percussionists, the band segued right into brightly colored bohemian track “Heavy California.” A red sunrise emerged behind the stage as McFarland and Lloyd-Watson harmonized. Jungle’s commitment to creating a truly immersive experience was evident throughout their set. Featured artists from their songs were projected onto the screen and they, too, grooved to the nostalgic-flecked samples.

The set was a fusion of the duo’s hits and newer tracks from Volcano. One of the standout moments came on a simmering rendition of “I’ve Been in Love,” with a pre-recorded clip of Compton rapper Channel Tres’ effortless rapped/sung delivery over reggae beats and synths. There was also the energetic encore of “Busy Earnin’” that had the crowd dancing and singing along.

For the most part, Jungle masterfully transitioned from one hit to another in what felt like a never-ending dance party. Undulating lights, thumping bass and funk-infused beats kept it moving. There was only one abrupt transition, before “Back in 74,” an amalgamation of foot-tapping beats, wooden percussion and acoustic guitar strumming. Its Bossa-infused soul mixed with Crosby, Stills & Nash and< ’90s R&B. The band followed with the significantly more minimalistic funk of “Casio.”

“Bonnie Hill,” one of a handful of songs from 2021’s Loving In Stereo, was next, with a little jazz flute and smoky saxophone that cut through the drum-like synths. There was a distortion effect at the end of the song, as if it was wobbling and winding down. The sparse, sulky jam “Cherry” arrived right after.

“What D’You Know About Me” exuded a sassy, unbridled joy. Jungle played a bombastic rendition of “Happy Man,” which—despite its detached, almost disembodied vocals—felt like it was brought down to earth by extra snappy disco and funk. McFarland and Lloyd-Watson sang “Time” in their lower register, which added a sultry tone that contrasted with their relentless high energy.

Jungle lingered on technicolor ‘90s house beats between songs and barely paused between tracks. Attendees grooved to “GOOD TIMES,” the techno-inflected “Holding On” and the bouncy “You Ain’t No Celebrity.” Sudanese American rapper Bas appeared onscreen for “Pretty Little Thing.” Bas’ metaphorical imagery about physical and spiritual journeys seemed fitting for the show.

Following a break the band returned for a breezy three-song encore, starting with disco banger “Keep Moving.”

“For this next song, get absolutely crazy and shake that booty,” one of the two shouted.

Their encore included jubilant house track “All of the Time” and the popular “Busy Earnin.’”

The show began with Scottish alt-soul singer Joesef. He delivered his dulcet and soulful vocals over guitar-led melodies about messy breakups and vulnerability. He was supported by several instrumentalists. The set drew from his soulful debut album, Permanent Damage.

“This next song is about shagging my ex,” said the artist, whose name is Joseph Traynor.

Joesef joked in his Glaswegian accent before playing songs like “Does It Make You Feel Good” and “It’s Been a Little Heavy Lately,” emotive and relatable tracks. He invited the audience to participate by thinking of someone they know and singing along.

“This next song is a cover. If you don’t know me … you’ll know this song,” he said as introduction to Sister Sledge’s “Thinking of You.”

When a young San Francisco couple—a venture capitalist wife and tech executive husband, who met at a startup more than a decade ago—purchased their first home together in 2015, the small Laurel Heights condo was perfect for just the two of them. Looking to create a special first place together, the couple hired interior designer Lauren Nelson of Lauren Nelson Design to help them remodel the space with contemporary interiors anchored by a palette of blue, gray, and white. In the years following the renovation came an engagement, a marriage, and the couple’s first child—a baby girl.

“Fast-forward to 2020,” the wife says, “[and we are] now married, trapped indoors with a one-year-old in said condo during COVID. We longed for more space and a backyard and began the search during lockdown.”

The couple had always dreamed of owning a home in Presidio Heights—a family-friendly neighborhood that borders the Presidio: a 1,500-acre national park at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. So, when a property with a classic 1930s Colonial Revival–style house became available just two blocks from the park, they jumped on the chance to view it. “When we saw this house come on the market, on the same block our family friends live on, and a few short blocks from my sister and her family, we just had a feeling this was our house,” the wife recalls.

The home’s stately exterior would remain, but the interiors needed a reconfiguration. “It hadn’t been touched in decades,” the client says, “and needed quite a bit of work not only due to general upkeep but also some bizarre design choices—like a tiny primary bathroom with one sink and then a random ‘bonus’ sink in the primary closet.”

“The language of the house was good, but the scale of the rooms wasn’t great,” explains architect Stephen Sutro, who, with Melissa Kim of Sutro Architects, helped Nelson and the clients rethink the layout. “Our goal was to design a home that would serve the functional interests of a growing family—when the children are little, you need more visual control of them, but as they grow up, they can have a separate space in the house to retreat to with their friends,” Sutro explains.

Nelson tapped into the client’s love of French design to create a sophisticated but non-fussy aesthetic. “We appreciated the home’s classic architecture,” Nelson says, “and we didn’t want every room to feel like a white box—we wanted something a bit more traditional balanced by modern details. Each room has its own identity.”

What started as a nip here and a tuck there turned into a full-gut remodel, with the design team opening up the back of the house and adding glass-and-steel bifold doors in the kitchen to establish a connection with the backyard and allowing in more natural light. Plaster, marble (nine different varieties), and patterned wallpaper bring color and texture to every room, creating a rich background for a mix of custom, vintage, and ready-made furniture.

Five years after two former journalists moved their family from Brooklyn to San Francisco to pursue careers in tech, they began the search for a quiet home that would also accommodate their kids’ journey into teenager-hood. In 2019, the couple purchased a 1913 Edwardian-style cottage located within footsteps of the wife’s childhood residence. The family spent a year living on the upper floor of the two-story row house, and the wife’s oldest friends who dropped in would repeatedly remark: “This reminds me so much of your house from growing up,” she recalls.

The duo amassed their own observations of the place during that inaugural year as research for a renovation. They concluded that the scope of work should include a hillside excavation to expand the basement and yield an all-new sub-basement garage. The wife adds, “[My husband] is a very good cook, and we didn’t want him to feel banished from family life as he prepared meals.” The husband noted a desire for the project to reflect personality as much as usage patterns: “This is the first time we felt like we were doing something from scratch, and we wanted to not worry about resale value,” he says.

The couple tapped William Duff Architects for the upgrade, impressed by the San Francisco–based firm’s prowess with complex site conditions like theirs. But finding the right interior designer for the undertaking required an extra beat, as initial referrals led them to studios whose portfolios seemed to embody the resale mindset they had disavowed. Reflecting on the colorful cabinetry and combinations of patterns of friends’ homes back in New York and Connecticut, the husband “wanted some of that East Coast character to come here.”

A mutual friend from the publishing world suggested Landed Interiors & Homes—a Berkeley-based studio that had opened for business at about the same time that the couple arrived in San Francisco. Landed’s founder, Lynn Kloythanomsup, is delighted that the family gravitated toward her business. “They are very adventurous in their taste,” she observes. One client notes that Kloythanomsup was just as receptive to experimentation, saying of their first meeting in 2019, “It felt like Lynn was listening to us in a cool way,” he says. “It’s not like she had a singular vision she needed to implant in our house.”

The husband adds that he and his wife were drawn to Kloythanomsup’s desire to retain the now 110-year-old house’s historical integrity, about which the designer says, “Our work is very responsive to existing architecture. We love to work in homes that have a strong architectural language, whether that’s midcentury or Victorian; the goal is to make any intervention feel like it’s been there all along.”

Landed focused its efforts on the expanded basement, transforming a majority of that space into a primary bedroom suite, and on the public rooms that encompass the floor above. Kloythanomsup and her team looked to the existing top floor for historical reference as they conceived custom carpentry for both levels. Indeed, the millwork is extensive, ranging from mudroom storage topped in quatrefoil-cutout doors and a bookshelf that runs the length of the living room to field paneling that envelops the hallway outside the primary suite. Though these features may be Edwardian at their core, “For this house we looked more to Federal and colonial-style profiles that would feel familiar and homey on the East Coast,” Kloythanomsup says of the detailing. “What I really love about working within classical architecture is that there is a lot more creativity than people see initially.” (Kloythanomsup has been profoundly influenced by this project, although to different geographic ends: She has just opened a brand of Landed in New York, where she plans to pursue deeper immersion in classical architecture as well as additional training in historic restoration.)

As for this project, the designer is most proud of those millwork elements that combined solutions as well as vocabularies. Because the row house nestles into a hill, she says, “We introduced glass doors, transoms, and clerestory windows in different places” to harvest available daylight in the absence of exposures. Although the primary bedroom has only one window in the sleeping area, for example, sunlight penetrates the suite’s dressing area and bathroom, which together comprise an enfilade. Underneath that single window, Landed also designed a generous storage-integrated seat for reading, which the wife calls a “do-again” of her childhood home: “I remembered how it was very calming on a weekend to wake up and just sit in the window seat and read the paper.” (She says that the house includes several “do-overs” too.)

Now fully established in San Francisco on their own terms, the family’s roots are only deepening. The husband works mostly remotely, and he finds an unexpected amount of pleasure in watching clouds and fog meander across the city from his hillside perch. Meanwhile, the pair imagine someday converting a backyard cottage to an accessory dwelling where their children could return after college.

The kitchen is how we like them in such magnificent homes: spacious enough, but simple and functional with clean stainless steel appliances, a comfortable center island, and a sunny breakfast nook. A clever closet hides a convenient washer and dryer.

Upstairs, all four bedrooms have lovely views, including the master suite where a daybed built into the bay window is a sweet spot for lounging among the treetops. Paneled walls conceal a built-in wardrobe where one panel opens to reveal a vanity with storage. The primary bathroom, clad in sleek black stone, has a dual sink vanity and walk-in rainfall shower.

On the third level up, a sprawling space multitasks as a family room and office. The bottom level houses another family room (or an in-law with a kitchen), a powder room, wine cellar, and two-car garage.
