It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Brodie announce his passing in May of 2021.

Tom was a third-generation San Franciscan. His great-grandfather Thomas Brodie started a San Francisco plumbing and heating company “Brodie’s” in approximately 1890.

Tom married in 1989 and the couple moved to Fremont in 1992 to purchase a home. However, in keeping with the Brodie tradition, Tom’s son was born at UCSF, making grandpa proud that his grandson was a fourth-generation San Franciscan.

Tom graduated Cum Laude from San Francisco State University where he also obtained a technical writing certificate. He worked as a technical writer for Sun Microsystems, Tesla Motors, and Citrix Systems.

Tom’s passion for cars was well-known, and each year he looked forward to the San Francisco Auto Show. He was an early driver when at the age of five he climbed into the parked car of a houseguest who had neglected to engage the emergency brake.

Tom’s passion for cars was rivaled by his love for dogs. His family’s first dog was a St. Bernard (Bobo), a gentle giant. Tom developed character personalities for the family dogs and “spoke” on their behalf, his family often needing to remind themselves that the dogs didn’t truly speak. When their beloved breeder dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind developed a medical issue and the family was mourning her loss, Tom and his wife fostered a puppy from Furry Friends Rescue. When their son met the puppy during a college break, the two quickly bonded and Sonic became a permanent part of the pack.

Tom will be remembered for his humor, compassion, generosity, and love for his family.

Tom is survived by his wife, Terrie Brodie; his son Jonathan Brodie; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Tricia Brodie and Doug and Elizabeth Brodie; his brothers-in-law, Steve Bialostok and Joe Lozoya, as well as nephews, a niece, and cousins.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, if anyone is so inclined, donations be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind or Furry Friends Rescue. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date.

LAS VEGAS — Tom Kim now has something in common with Byron Nelson as the only players to have won the same PGA Tour event twice in the same season.

Kim successfully defended his title Sunday in the Shriners Children’s Open when he closed with a 5-under 66 to emerge from a pack of a dozen players who had a chance in the final hour. Kim wound up winning by one shot over Adam Hadwin, who birded the final hole for a 67.

Kim now has three PGA Tour titles in the last 15 months, at 21 the youngest player since Tiger Woods in 1997 to have three tour wins.

“I really felt confident in myself,” Kim said. “I knew that if I did me I was going to be able to do it. I’m stoked to get this one.”

He won in Las Vegas a year ago, beating Patrick Cantlay in a playoff at the TPC Summerlin, when the Shiners Children’s Open was early in the season. Now, the Las Vegas event is still part of the same season because the PGA Tour goes to a calendar season starting in 2024.

People are also reading…

Nelson won the San Francisco Open in January 1944, and the same tournament in December of 1994, both times at Harding Park.

This one was up for grabs until Kim seized control on the par-5 16th.

With an hour left in the tournament, there was a six-way tie for the lead and 12 players were separated by a single shot. The key stretch at the TPC Summerlin was holes No. 13 through No. 16, which ranked as four of the five easiest holes in the final round.

Taylor Pendrith was tied for the lead with a birdie on the 13th, but had to settle for pars the rest of that stretch. K.H. Lee made all pars.

Then, it became a two-man race between Kim and Hadwin, playing in the final group with Kim holding a one-shot advantage.

Both birdied the 13th, Hadwin with a 35-foot birdie putt that rimmed all the way around the cup before dropping. Both birdied the reachable par-4 15th, Kim with a tough up-and-down and birdie putt from 12 feet, Hadwin narrowly missing a 25-foot eagle attempt.

It turned on the par-5 16th. Kim hit to the fat of the green in two, 50 feet away for eagle. Hadwin knew he missed his shot right after contact and it came up well short and into the water. Hadwin missed a 6-foot par putt after his penalty drop, and Kim three-putted — he had to make a 5-footer on his third one — for par.

“I completely whiffed it, up and out of it, and unfortunately one of my worst swings of the day at the least opportune time,” Hadwin said.

“I feel like you dump it in the water there on 16, and I certainly by no means gave the tournament, but I would have liked to have hit a more quality golf shot and put a little bit more pressure on Tom coming down the stretch.”

That gave Kim a two-shot lead with two to play, and he closed with solid pars. Kim finished at 20-under 264.

Eric Cole boosted his bid to be PGA Tour rookie of the year by closing with a 62 to finish two behind, along with Alex Noren (65), J.T. Poston (66) and Pendrith (67). Pendrith came into Las Vegas at No. 123 in the FedEx Cup and was projected to move to No. 90, all but assuring a full card for 2024.

Ludvig Aberg, who made his Ryder Cup debut two weeks ago, also shot 62 and tied for 13th.

Kim, born in South Korea and raised primarily in Australia, won for the first time in 2023. He had a hot run last summer that included victories in the Wyndham Championship and in Las Vegas, followed by a dynamic debut in the Presidents Cup.

But he said he felt the pressure to live up to the expectations, and it turned this year into a grind. He was a distant runner-up in the British Open, though he injured his ankle during the week that kept him from defending his title in the Wyndham Championship.

“It’s been a grind trying to figure it out,” Kim said. “My first full season, trying to live up to expectations of a great year. It’s been humbling sometimes.”

The victory moves Kim to No. 11 in the world ranking.

Isaiah Salinda, who got into Las Vegas as a Monday qualifier, had a 63-67 weekend and tied for seventh, which gets him into the next full PGA Tour event Nov. 2-5 in Mexico.

Patient zero for a Hot Knit Spring

Nota bene: If you buy through the links in this article, we may earn a small share of the profits.

There’s just something about Tom Holland. Perhaps it’s his dashing good looks. Maybe it’s his surprisingly legit acting chops as the newest occupant of the wall-crawling web-head (that’s canonical, look it up) mantle. It could be his guileless, waifish charm — aggravated, no doubt, by the orphaned chimney sweep accent — but we’re inclined to think it has something to do with his sartorial sensibilities, too.

Xavi Torrent/Getty Images

Fresh off Sony’s billion-dollar Spider Man: No Way Home success, the brit is making waves with his proclivity for wearing just the right thing: an Oscar-worthy suit here, a Prada campaign there. His most recent look is as clear an indication as any that Peter … er, Tom is in the running for a spot in the holy triumvirate of twenty-something heartthrobs (Timmy, Tommy and Hazza has a nice ring to it, no?).

Photographed at the Barcelona premiere of Uncharted, the leading man’s newest action blockbuster costarring a perfectly-platonic Mark Wahlberg, Holland’s get-up is as concrete an indication as any that young Tom is a cinematic force. And much more importantly, it’s a really easy spring style move to replicate.

Left to right: The Elder Statesman Ribbed Stripped Cashmere Sweater ($,1395), COS Open Collar L/S Polo Sweater ($125)

Mr. Porter/COS

Just what makes the red carpet look, designed entirely by countryman Paul Smith, ‘fit so good? As we’ve discussed, It doesn’t hurt that the outspoken short king is a certified cutie (Zendaya is never wrong). But the look itself hits all the criteria for perfected spring causals. Most importantly, the sweater — nay, jumper — is relaxed, roomy and loud, with on-trend ink-spilled intrigue that remains firmly on the luxury designer side of the runway-to-Phish merch continuum. You heard it here first; spring 2022 is all about voicey knits. They don’t have to be especially avant-garde, although those are pretty cool, but there’s one for practically every budget, big or small.

Likewise, the modern cut and complementary tonal trousers ensure the get-up reads cohesive and interesting, while remaining business-appropriate. The leather brogues provide the prerequisite (pardon the pun) laced-up touch for a movie premiere, and an excellent watch is really just a cherry on top.

The red-carpet ‘do is just what we want to see for spring; relaxed and causal silhouettes in anything-but-boring colors, textures and fits. And all of it could be yours, sans tousled hair and boyish magnetism. Because as Tom is demonstrating to great effect, a good sweater makes for a great outfit, especially when paired up nicely with some office-ready slacks and shoes.

Zendaya and Tom Holland, who first met while filming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” in 2016, were spotted getting cozy at a Golden State Warriors versus Los Angeles Lakers game on Thursday night. The couple reportedly seemed relaxed and casual, both donning comfortable outfits as they watched the Game 2 of the NBA playoffs game at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

Zendaya, who is originally from Oakland, California, sported a loose white tee and gold-rimmed reading glasses for the occasion. She accessorized with layered gold necklaces, a matching wristwatch, and a black Warriors hat that she removed midway through the game. Holland, on the other hand, opted for a grey crewneck sweatshirt, silver wristwatch, and black sunglasses.

Despite their casual attire, the couple appeared to be big sports fans and were previously spotted wearing personalized hockey jerseys at a New York Rangers game in February 2022. Their relationship was first confirmed back in July 2021, when rumors of the two co-stars being more than friends were sparked by photos of them locking lips in a car.

Since then, the couple has been going strong with Zendaya recently visiting Holland’s native hometown in London. In the same month, she was also seen wearing a ring with Tom’s initial engraved into it. However, in November 2022, rumors of their engagement were quashed by Zendaya’s mom, who posted the definition of the word “clickbait” after a Twitter account claimed the couple was “reportedly engaged.”

Zendaya and Holland have yet to confirm or deny any engagement rumors. Regardless, the couple seems to be enjoying their time together and supporting their favorite sports teams.

Have you ever wondered why rental costs in the region have become so high? Well, the apartment rental website Rent Cafe provides some insight in answering this question.

According to a recent study by the website, “rising home prices and a preference for flexibility have led to a wave of high earners” nationwide competing in the rental market over the past half decade.

According to the latest analysis, more than 2.6 million Americans with incomes of $150,000 and above are choosing to rent homes over buying.

Here in California, that group has exploded by 136% in the last five years.

But what is the fallout for San Diego? Renters making $150,000 or more annually now make up 12.4% of San Diego renters. That’s a significant number.

According to the study, the number of well-heeled renters in San Diego has doubled to 33,500 since 2018.

And it’s pretty obvious that this demand for luxury living is one of the reasons so many luxury homes are coming onto the market.

During the same period, home prices rose 36% — less than state sister cities like San Jose, which saw increases of over 50% — but still well above the national average of 29%.

Some other results: San Diego ranked #7 on a list of the top 20 high-income renter places.

San Francisco ranked #1 with more than 80,000 residential units occupied by well-paid tenants. Last on the list was San Antonio, Texas, with less than 3% of units occupied by people making $150,000 or more.

 * * *

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Intense storms that battered the San Francisco Bay Area for more than a week caused flooding, downed trees and power outages. After another weekend of rain and strong winds, some dry days are ahead this week, but another storm is expected Wednesday. Even with a break in the rain for now, the region is still facing residual effects as a result of the strong storm.

Jan. 16, 2023

11 p.m.
People head outside to enjoy the sunshine for 1st time in weeks as storm cleanup continues

After a seemingly never-ending stretch of storms, the sunshine is finally back in the Bay Area.

In San Francisco, a still soaked Crissy Field was alive with people.

“We didn’t have to bring our umbrella. We just kind of walked out of the house and didn’t have to worry about getting drenched,” said Kate Costello.

But it wasn’t bright skies for everyone. Earlier in the day, The Golden Gate National Recreation Area tweeted a photo of an old military structure on the beach of Fort Funston after it slid down a nearby bluff.

“I believe that what rolled out of the hill this morning was a piece of the rifle range, apparently dated to the 1930s,” said retired National Park Service Curator, John Martini.

The structure tumbled off the cliff around 10 a.m. Monday, likely due to the saturated land according to park officials.

“We actually did a study to see could we stabilize in place some of these structures, especially some of the gun positions, and it was just so prohibitively expensive,” said Martini.

Fort Funston is home to several such military structures, some of which played roles during the second world war.

Due to time and erosion, several have fallen over the years.

No one was injured in the slide, but park staff reminded visitors to be cautious of their surroundings in the area.

4 p.m.
Hwy 13 expected to reopen Monday evening after closure for mudslides

Caltrans crews are still working Monday afternoon to remove mud from a stretch of of southbound Highway 13 in Oakland, where a fallen tree and mudslides closed the road late Sunday night.

The road is expected to reopen between 5 and 6 p.m. Monday, according California Highway Patrol Officer Adib Zeid.

3:40 p.m.
Southbound lanes of Hwy 1 reopen after rockslide near Tom Lantos Tunnels

The southbound lanes of Highway 1 near the Tom Lantos Tunnels have reopened after a massive boulder and rockslide blocked part of the roadway.

3:30 p.m.
South Bay reservoirs spilling following storms

This series of atmospheric storms filled many Santa Clara County reservoirs to the point of spilling.

“Uvas Reservoir in South County has been spilling for a good week, Almaden Reservoir on and off, Coyote Reservoir been spilling,” said Bassam Kassab, Water Supply Operation Manager for Valley Water.

The most recent to spill has been Lexington Reservoir near Los Gatos.

Crews have been working to clear debris and blockage throughout the county but one of the most important jobs for those who manage the local waterways will be to draw down the reservoirs to stop the spilling.

They expect spilling at Lexington to stop in the next three days and the other reservoirs within a week or two.

This time of year, Valley Water says the reservoirs can’t stay completely full in case more storms come, so they will be releasing some of the water until the spring when we typically don’t expect as much rain.

2:15 p.m.
WWII bunker slides off bluff onto beach at Fort Funston

Golden Gate National Recreation Area officials are urging visitors to be attentive to their surroundings and follow trailhead signs after a WWII bunker slid off a bluff and onto the beach below.

1:10 p.m.
Both directions of Hwy 37 reopen after flooding

The California Highway Patrol tweeted Monday afternoon that both directions of Highway 37 are open and only the right westbound lane remains closed for safety reasons. It will reopen once CHP deems it to be safe.

1 p.m.
Massive boulder, rockslide blocking part of Hwy 1 near Devil’s Slide

A massive boulder and rockslide are blocking part of Highway 1 near the Tom Lantos Tunnels. Video taken from ABC7 reporter Gloria Rodriguez shows cars are still able to make it around the boulder but traffic is slowed in the area.

12:30 p.m.
19 homes evacuated along Kirker Creek in Pittsburg

Pittsburg PD confirms they asked families in at least 19 homes along the Kirker Creek to evacuate overnight, along with four units in the Fox Creek Apartment complex. Twelve people were rescued via boat by a swift-water rescue team.

12 p.m.
Rushing water at the Lexington Reservoir

Video shows the Lexington Reservoir spillway outflow at the base of the dam. The water goes into Los Gatos Creek.

8:20 a.m.
NB 101 in Redwood City closed

Lanes are blocked on Northboound 101 in Redwood City due to emergency pothole repairs at Woodside Road. Dozens of cars have been damaged by the large pothole.

CHP says to expect delays and advises using alternate routes. There is no estimated time of opening.

8:15 a.m.
Berkeley mudslides shutdown roads, cause evacuation warnings

Several areas in Berkeley have seen mudslides Monday morning.

The spiral between Wildcat Canyon and Middlefield, Middlefield North of the crossways, and Wildcat Canyon between Sunset and Park Hills Road are closed due to a mudslide.

Berkeley police are advising residents in the area to be prepared to evacuate, and say some already have.

UC Berkeley police also say to avoid the area of Sports Lane at the Clark Kerr campus because of a mudslide.

9:40 p.m.
Santa Clara County extends evacuation warning to include more areas

The County of Santa Clara announced an extension to existing evacuation warnings to include community members residing in the watershed areas along the Bloomfield Avenue Area – between Highways 25 and 152, and south of Bloomfield Avenue to the county line – due to the weather conditions and potential risks of flooding to the general public and property.

SCC said the prior evacuation warning zone is being expanded due to two levy breaches in San Benito County, which is adjacent to the expanded zone area.

The county’s office of emergency services recommends that community members living in the marked areas should gather their household members, pets, personal items, important documents, prescription medications, change of clothes, non-perishable foods, water, extra batteries, flashlights, and phone chargers in preparation for potential evacuations.

The county also announced a Local Assistance Center at San Martin Lion’s Club, located at 12415 Murphy Ave. in San Martin. This shelter is accessible and all service animals are welcome.

4:35 p.m.
Caltrans announces several storm-related highway closures

The latest winter storm system to move through the Bay Area region has resulted in various highway closures in the following locations due to road hazards on the highway, says Caltrans:
